Eric

Great episode! Can’t believe I’ve never heard of John vanderslice before but it’s some great music!

Jeremy Traver

2-2-22 same day the Washington football team became the commanders wow

Josh

I’ve never heard of John, or his studio, but the Mountain Goats and TuneYards mean a lot to me. I look forward to listening to his own discography.

Jake Scalia

Listening tomorrow, anything about techno on there ?

Some Guy

Yung Chomsky on the mic is instant top tier episode

Kevin Diez

I wish brace Belden was real

vermouth

Ok i’ll listen to it only if we get a real rock n roll one sometime alrite big binger?????

stuckforever

Man i wish i knew literally anything about this subject. Sounds like this is a big deal from the way people are talking about it

Graham Hoese

As a Mormon, can confirm the free labor thing. I was born to pinch cow teat for my parents

Evan

BILL GATES MUST DIE!!!

r b

I am excited for any direction you guys take the podcast in. Makes sense since Brace and YC are music dudes

SH

This is a great departure for this podcast. Congrats on taking a risk and telling a meaningful story.

SH

Also get YC on the mic sometimes. Thoughtful decent dude from how this turned out.

cwen

Fuuuuuuuuuuck

Fellow Worker

Hell yes, love San Francisco centric material. Nostalgic for that time out there and all the great music and haunts

Amy F

Lovely. Tiny Telephone felt like a house, a place people live. Comfy. Looking forward to the series.

gekko

Kevin Telephone

NigelBOpinion

Let's get the Girls tell-all episode, come on.

Kerri

Please do a podcast about General Vang Pao and the Secret War

TrueAnonPod

Never lol though I did go to mission records when I was real young

Karen-Ethel

I’m really looking forward to hearing the interviews. I moved to SF in the mid-90s and I don’t think it can be over stated about what was displaced and lost - art and music wise - when tech moved in. There was music everywhere . And don’t get me started about SRL

Sebastian Nair

Probably be hard as he doesn’t seem to have done any yet, but given his release have you considered trying to interview David Gilbert?

MaPo

Sounds g*y as fuck

Arden Igleheart

I only listen to this podcast because I’m in love with Yung Chomsky

MaPo

You read the description right laugh react

Brian Long

YC: this is young Chomsky Me; *cums*

phil

can confirm unfortunately retail mafia no longer exists. people getting fired over asking to swap discounts

Michael S. Judge

I want John to know that I said "Universal Audio 1176" and "Tape-Op magazine" exactly at the same time he did. Sup JV. Major respect to anyone who's done the real recording grind that seriously for that long (and made stuff like CELLAR DOOR there)

Rhod

Like this if you didn’t sign up for a music podcast.

Don Workman

I dident sign up for ur dumbass remarks

Rhod

Don’t look then bitch.

Porphyrogénnētos

bitch you will listen to yung chomskey’s passion project and you will LIKE IT

spanky bulldog

Trying to find out more about that guy actually. He was arrested in California in 2007 for running a massive gun running operation, then all charges were dropped against him. Cao Ky, who was a south vietnamese president, air force leader, and massive heroin trafficker ended up living a city over from where I grew up. I just wonder how much the vietnamese and Laotian expat communities here parallel the Cubans in Florida in terms of being used for clandestine operations and shit.

Alek

THE BOSSTONES BROKE UP

Jacob Shulkin

Also, the great return of Chairman Yung Chomsky!! 🤘🏼

Brian Long

So happy to hear YC’s voice 🥰

Brian Long

Liz’s band name is incredible lmaooooo

carl

I really, really love how genuine vanderpump is. truly. he truly ruled.

orc

Yung Chomsky's voice is so genteel, he sounds like he dresses

Andrew Gelwick

this is the most op thing they've done yet

Professor Jokes

I don't like this, and jung chumsky sounds like a boring person.

John Koeppel

if you'd cop his fit, you must acquit.

GG Allin Dulles

Specifically on the hickey/voodoo glow skulls split 7" and the pudding trumpet

Evan Scott

This was so wholesome and nice, i had a smile on my face the whole episode

no

Release a cut that is for gearheads tho

maddy

liz- im happy to report retail mafia culture is still going strong amongst 20 somethings in SF 🙏

Leo

Thanks for this episode. As a musician currently living in what feels like the last art warehouse in SF this episode totally hit close to home. I’ve spent the morning in a nostalgic fog.

Austin Z

I remember you putting exodus damage on the third or fourth 9 11 episode. Awesome seeing this project come to light

phil

conflicting reports…

Bobby Volcano

Like this if you always skip those two people talking and only listen to trueanon for the music

Kevin Price

YC needs to drop that workout routine

Kerri

Hard to say about current use for clandestine shit but the younger Hmong folks I know seem relatively unconcerned about Communism. I think Vang Pao's willingness to engage with the US was due to deep seeded ethnic conflicts with the Chinese and less about political economics, but I'm not certain. Christianization plays a big part too since most of the Hmong that participated were Green or White compared to the Black or Flower Hmong who generally retained traditional beliefs. The entire thing is fascinating, but I certainly do have Hmong comrades so I don't think the circumstances are very similar to Cuba. The Cuban expats are dispossessed plantation owners. The Hmong refugees were peasant opium farmers who were sick of being fucked with by the Chinese and Vietnamese.

Hank

Shut up pussy

Elvar Fossdal

why the fuck is everyone so. negative about this series. let them do something less soul-destroying than investigating pedophiles

yellowkid

Imagine doing a whole podcast series about San Francisco indie and not talking about one of the last great indie bands to come out of that city.

yellowkid

On the real though my dream in high school was to move to San Francisco and join a band because of Girls but then the complete takeover of tech ruined that so this series should be interesting.

Graham Hoese

This is the strongest ratio I've seen in the Patreon comments yet.

Night Zoo

This project sounds fucking incredible!!! I was hanging on every word of this episode. Pumped.

Night Zoo

I said LA2A 🤷🏻‍♀️

yellowkid

Also a big missed opportunity for my favorite genre of trueanon ep -"brace commiserating with a fellow ex-junkie" (see the episode with Nico Walker, author of Cherry).

Matt

Loved it, hope you guys make more content like this.

Mr. Seymour

Really enjoyed this. I already wanted to get involved with my local underground music scene, and stuff like this just brings me closer to finally showing up at some basement show. Lovely preview episode, looking forward to the smol sewies. (In a similar vein, Brace's appearance on Turned Out a Punk was great)

Panic

god this makes me fucking miss playing indie rock and punk shows so fucking hard - I was not around for this scene at all but I always take up the opportunity to listen to ppl talk about their local scenes and the people and music and spaces involved, so stoked for this

Oliver Terrett

This sounds interesting! By the way I would do another pass for YCs real name, I swear in the first 40/50 mins a fifth name was said, but as I don't know what his real name is, I don't know if it was a slip or if I misheard John as another name…

gen~

over the past 2 years ive been relentlessly researching the 90s–00s post-hardcore and emo music scene. i became obsessed with trying to understand it and situate it culturally. right now im reading nothing feels good by andy greenwald. so its super cool to hear vanderslice's perspective on running a studio during that time, even tho its a different scene (though adjacent i'd argue). appreciate this!

Tim

Oof.

Spencer McKee

this is sweet. thanks for doing this series, excited to hear more

Tom

I’m with Liz tearing up at JV’s closing monologue. Cannot fucking WAIT for this.

Internet jones

So the brace wiki says he plays a musicmaster bass, which is a really hilarious instrument, hoping for more gear related content, and hearing brace explain why he chose the weirdest fender ever made

Jared Sarnie

I'm so excited for this. I graduated high school in 2017, but for whatever reason, the music that was most meaningful me at the time was that folksy indie rock stuff from a decade earlier. I had no idea so many of my favorite bands had all coalesced around one studio. I'm so excited for this, the love and care going into this project is so exciting. I'm really thrilled to see Liz Brace and YC expand into more projects like this, they all seem to have such storied lives and diverse talents that go far beyond the epstein-verse and I'd love to see them branch out into more, truly independent passion projects. Awesome episode

otis

Where/how did Brace and Lizz meet?

GT

For transparency’s sake could we get an estimate on the total cost of the signal chain?

Chloe Interferometry

Hey Mr Judge I'd like to revoke your podcasting license as you dropped a bomb ep about nostalgia and are at the moment partaking in what will in the future be an equivalent of 'I saw those guys at Woodstock, mannnnnnn'

Michael S. Judge

Au contraire. I am partaking in what will, in the future, be the equivalent of Randall Smith and Alexander Dumble saying "cascade at least two preamp stages together," and a) I have no *nostalgia* for this because it is the synchronous genesis of a still-durable alchemy (consult next week's show), and b) nostalgia is a mass-culture project (cf. likewise), and I'm guessing less than 1% of the population knows who Smith & Dumble are AND what cascaded preamp stages do, or why they matter. All things will be made clear on the next episode, or perhaps just more complicated

Michael S. Judge

(or, put it another way: there's nothing nostalgic about the UA 1176 and TAPE OP; people use them every day to make the present and the future of thine ears)

uleg0

Brace is about 4 ft 9, so the short scale music master bass is probably a perfect fit

Internet jones

I heard he’s exactly normal size but his hands are exactly 3 inches long

Chloe Interferometry

I was just joking but go off king! Can't fucking wait for the next episode, I'm consulting my own gods to see if I can negotiate down your pain

E M

only SF band I care about is TFUL282!

BS

so underrated

Zack Burke

Jerry Garcia said it best. Playing music live is like sailing a ship through a storm in the open ocean. Recording music is like building a ship in a bottle.

Mark Owen

Flipper and SRL references, now I can dig it.

Kot Begemot

I feel perversely in tune with this sentiment - not because I doubt the actual existence of Brace, but rather because he seems so much like the type of fictional character I would expect myself to confabulate in order to make myself happy through the belief that he exists. As gay as it may sound, it legit makes me really, really happy that Brace exists.
