I don’t understand why, but I still get defensive about this stuff even though I haven’t been on any social media for over a decade at this point. Even this account, that I’ve been using for the last three months to comment on a disgusting amount of TrueAnon episodes, is under a random name that I could never get any clout with. I think that even my consumption of content like this podcast may be why I’m still defensive. I loved the Ghislaine Maxwell trial series, and I could sit and focus on it much more easily than I can focus on some of the spider network episodes. Where is the line? I sure as hell would rather listen to this than watch Real Housewives. Compared to watching a lecture on OpenCourseWare, the early Epstein episodes like the one about the Dubins is more like a tabloid. Is it all bad, unless I’m reading Lenin?

I agree with the personal morality that Liz evokes near the end. That morality takes conscious effort, though, and this society is increasingly designed to subvert any conscious thought because encouraging that does not make money. Knowledge worker or not, most people are fucking drained at the end of the day. It's to the point where I'm skeptical of myself when I feel like reading a book because reading takes effort for me, especially if I want to understand the material. When you're at that point, you're looking for the easiest way through the rest of your day and if you've been in a job long enough, you become chronically deprived of imaginative thought. You slide down the path of least resistance and the littlest obstacle ends up hitting the emergency release on the steam valve releasing steam you didn't know had built up. Long way of saying, most people don't have the will or the energy to fight their way uphill

I deleted Facebook and Instagram accounts over a year ago because of exactly this reason. I started to feel overwhelmed with how much of myself I was so freely sharing and was so confused about how it got to that point. Now when I hear what people are posting I’m grateful to be removed from that situation. It’s too much to give and also see.

wanted 2 add that I first encountered cancelation as a term when I first got into the punk scene, where ppl who had been outed as rapists were cancelled, which meant being exiled from the scene (bands not playing shows in certain spaces, with other bands, etc) and while that could get out of control it generally was about making spaces and victims safer, can’t say current usage is about that at all
