was playing this at work and my coworker asked if it was joe rogan when he heard bens voice

Michael S. Judge

Ben is a guy who's read an enormous amount of stuff & knows what he's talking about. I can't source-check him on everything, but for the ones I do know, he's working from plenty of legit documentation. The only way to know much about this subject matter is to stay outside of academia

Hardcore Virgin

There’s literally a paper trail of the black and veach estimate of the lab. It was a bio lab. It said so on their site. And they ran it! Sorry you’re a fucking retard!

Is the comment section about to be flooded with angry sickos again?

Sam Zeng

I just want to remind everyone here that NATO is strictly a defensive Organization that seeks to protect its member states. Anyone who brings up NATO's involvement in Yugoslavia, Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and Yemen are Russian trolls.

tMinozaJ

nope just cute lil gumshoes

Prescott Bush

Throwing some kabobs on the grill for this one

tMinozaJ

NATO’s ravenous, unbridled expansion really reminds me of another international entity, the Gourmand. He is considered international based on girth alone.

Sam Zeng

NATO is about SOLIDARITY okay.

SF

Looking forward to this, and looking forward even more to a lot of weird little perverts in the comment section.

How do you talk about the early years of NATO without discussing Korea or the Berlin Blockade?

swervegriffin

My understanding is that the US/Germany/other empires try to have an eagle symbol because that was Rome’s symbol and they’re all trying to be the new Rome

Javier Garcia

Chris Rivera, if your reading this you a bish!

Sean Muth

Belden plan? Belden Road c;mon it was right there!

Jessica S

Yes!! Perfection.

Munir hakim

Listening to this reminded me of a lot of the shit varoufakis has talked about. Are there any good books about the tenuous alliance between the ussr and the west and how it functioned and worked

Jessica S

Wtf are “tactical” nuclear weapons? Is it one of those made up ideas like “surgical” strikes? And wouldn’t the first “tactical” use have to be taking out all launch capabilities of your opponent, thereby spreading out the land space being nuked anyhow? It is beyond obscene that people can profit from making these types of weapons. Never mind making them at all.

Sean

ben is my favorite independent researcher

justdave

A homeless lady would come into the pizza shop I used to work at, and we would talk. She said, it was a reference to the phenix, constantly re-imagining itself into existence, and that's basically my understanding of fascism

NYCM&AHole

To quote Pepe Escobar, the Nazi American Terrorist Organization.

AKorgar

Well, the Black Eagle used by Germany dates all the way back to the Middle Ages, to the Holy Roman Empire, and is derived from a symbol used by Charlemagne. And Charlemagne's use was definitely derived from the Roman eagle.

AKorgar

Tactical nuclear weapons are nukes designed to be used on battlefields against conventional military forces, and have smaller blast yields. Compared to strategic nuclear weapons which are intended to be used to wipe out entire industrial centers, rail hubs, power plants, ie, cities.

AKorgar

We're all goblins here Graham

I get the economic logic behind NATO that you’re focusing on here but I’m kinda confused why there’s no mention of the Soviet-German pact and ensuing invasion/carving up of Poland that showed the security threat to Europe. Is this just too “obvious” to even mention? Or doesn’t work with the economic argument so that’s why you don’t bring it up? Millions of Jews and Poles died because of this pretty major fuck up on the part of England and France, and the US didn’t even want to get involved for long enough to let all those people perish. Hate to bring it up as I know this is supposed to just be more of a NATO hate episode and I fully agree with its role as a gateway for economic liberalism but there’s a real life historical event that made keeping Germany and USSR apart a necessity.

CC

As promised. 😅 It only took a war. But we got it in the end. Big love to the mighty Triumvirate of True-Anon. 💋💋💋

Allan Castellon

This is an absurd idea given that the US literally banned the USSR from NATO lol. If that was really the purpose then they would've accepted the Soviets admission into NATO when they applied. Not to mention the Molotov Ribbentrop pact only happened AFTER Britain and France Rejected the Alliance against Germany the Soviets offered to them.

NYCM&AHole

PS I’m wearing the trueanon hat down here at some resort in Cancun. I thought it’d be bad form to get on the plane with the “bush did 9/11” hat

Malika Nash

Didn’t know US banned the USSR from NATO, I thought USSR asked to join as a provocation — obviously the very existence of NATO was a defense against the USSR, esp considering its occupation of Poland among other countries in the eastern bloc. Soviets playing both sides and getting the rejection was grounds for the Warsaw Pact. It was a good move, similar to the alliance it made with France before the war, as you mentioned. But no way was France gonna join the soviets to help them invade Poland. They knew that tho. It gave them the grounds to ally with hitler.

AKorgar

Alliance with the French to invade Poland, wha? Malika you seem to have a fairly patchy understanding of the history here, no offense

Malika Nash

Considering it took the Soviets a mere 10 years to break the Litvinov “peace” pact and invade Poland, I’m guessing that they weren’t serious about alliances with France or Britain for actual peace, but buying time to recover from WW I, and as soon as they got the opportunity — even aligning with Hitler — they went for what they actually wanted. France didn’t want the same thing. That’s all I’m saying. But what I’m really asking in all this is how come the Soviet alignment with Hitler and the invasion of Poland isn’t raised in the discussion on the pod or in the comments. Just a basic question. Is it because it’s not easy to spin it to make it work with the economic arguments or is there a more legit reason why the invasion isn’t relevant to the discussion of NATO?

Malika Nash

And happy to be corrected. A dumb human like me can’t live on bread and condescension alone.

Ben Hansen

I was hoping to find a comprehensive history of NATO like this! Glad it's you guys doing it

2026-09-09 19:00 Brace, you said that the Soviets didn't demobilse the Red Army after the war. Do you believe this? Two facts suggest that you are wrong: a) birth rates; b) economic growth. Neither of these are compatible with maintaining an army at war-time strength.

I have filled my idiot mind with useless information so this episode paired with TA and Ben’s previous work on operation gladio / the spider network, leading me to The Devil’s Chessboard etc have really helped me make sense of this stupid world. Thanks!

For the complete history of NATO, listen to all other 211 episodes of trueanon

Devil's chessboard?

It all comes back to solidarity

Ty very much

Malika Nash

Robert, no they actually planned the carving up meticulously before both invaded it.

This episode is a perfect example of how well balanced between humor and serious inquiry this podcast can be. Can't wait for part two.

John McElroy

Ben is another outstanding guest - cheers 🍻!

Brace, gotta say Liz is right. Walking around barefoot outside is how you get hookworm. Also, thanks for this episode. Love Ben, and of course you guys!

Brace I'm disappointed in you. I always saw you as the sexy, cool, jacked smart member of the podcast...until this episode. An acronym (NATO) is always sounded out like a normal word. An initialism is when you say each letter individually (like FBI). Unfortunately I now see you as just the sexy, cool, jacked member of the podcast, and I'm afraid I'll never be able to unsee you this way

Hannah Pudner

I’d love an episode about the EU, covering this like you have NATO here

So uhhh what’s Benny Boy here doing stanning Aleksandr Dugin and backing Ukrainian bio-weapon conspiracy nonsense?

I stan the Belden Plan

Stoked to hear people actually acknowledge the greek civil war, a really slept on part of the beginning of the cold war, great stuff

Fun fact: Scotland's national animal is the Unicorn!

Obviously many people were demobilized but they maintained a much larger standing army than the European states

Ben is extremely mentally ill, which is very obvious if you read any of his stuff. Anyway, fun episode, lotta laughs.

It might be just me but i don’t have access to the other parts of this series on RSS feed or on Patreon app. Anyone else missing these?

Donna Oakes-Munro

As a boomer, I'm having so much cognitive dissonance! Great episode.

Sam Burbank

I also can’t seem to find Part 2 and Part 3 of the NATO episodes on the RSS feed!

Marina

Who is this guest, Ben? Unless I missed it, I’ve only heard Brace and Liz say he’s an “independent researcher” but I don’t know what that means… I wish he would mention his sources or even vaguely reference where he gets his information. When he’s a guest on the pod, it’s always to discuss very layered and murky subjects like NATO, 9/11, JFK, etc. I always assumed he was some kind of expert, so I should take his analysis at face value, but I don’t know what kind of research he does.

PrinceVocalFry

I want to second Ben's recommendation of van der Pijls's Making of the Atlantic Ruling Class. I read it while listening to these and, while it's pretty dry, it gives a great outline of the factions of the western ruling classes. I've found myself using it a lot recently while thinking through the deeper politics of the western alliance. Arrighi's Long Twentieth Century pairs very well with it.
