I assume that Musk is buying Twitter for reasons that are similar to Bezos buying the Washington Post (who also took the company private). e.g. media companies are one way that rich people exert more power and influence. If he takes it private too, there is less disclosure and oversight. The user data may end up being valuable as well. What would prevent Musk from using the platform as well to promote his own brand and products, while amplifying negative information about his competitors?

Good episode, but I've noticed from both this and past podcast appearances that Noah Kulwin seems to actually buy into the idea that Musk is some sort of talented visionary (even if he's a bad/erratic person) and generally buys into some tech hype stuff (which isn't that surprising given his past career as a tech journo). A good example is the old Chapo episode where he talks about self-driving (which, while absolutely a real technology, isn't actually anywhere vaguely close to being used by regular people and might not ever be; everyone, including the people working on self-driving, just have an incentive to act like it's perpetually "just around the corner"). Noah Kulwin is cool and Blowback is possibly the best podcast ever, so I don't want this to sound like any sort of condemnation; people buying into tech industry hype - which includes the idea of Musk being a talented engineer/visionary - is just a pet peeve of mine. With Musk specifically it feels like I'm going insane, because it could not possibly be more obvious that Musk has virtually no actual technical skill. He is very-much a Trump-like figure who only has a sort of "low business cunning."
