Every time I see a mormon parallel story I cringe, especially when it's related to Utah. I want to clarify that Utah mormons are a different breed than the rest of us. They have been born into and raised in a completely different culture. I get when people are put off by Utah mormons or those who have transplanted out of Utah. Half of them have never met someone who drinks coffee, of course they're weird. I'm a member who grew up an hour from our closest church and in Catholic country, I grew up surrounded by a culture of alcoholism and fish fry's lol. The point is, the Utah culture is not the church or the doctrine that it teaches, as much as my fellow members living in a cultural bubble might think so.

Children put covers on our shoes as we entered. We were shown “instruction rooms” and “sealing rooms” that all looked bland and corporate. I concur with Graham. I was raised in the faith outside Utah, still actively practising, and I have always felt out of place in Utah. But Devin's also got a point. It is sort of cope to blame the weirdness on Utah culture alone, which often discounts the problematic parts of the Church and culture that I agree do exist. But religion is also a personal thing for everyone and I know where Graham is coming from as I've also had to spend half my life convincing people I'm not some sort of lizard person. David, different thing, but yes. Devin, religion is weird so what. Most of us are just trying to live good lives and do good things. Some find the answers from Marx, others from Christ, and still others from both. Incidentally, BYU is where I was actually exposed to positive takes on Marxism and eventually got into left-wing politics.

You're definitely right, as a leftist member I've always felt alienated by the conservative culture surrounding the church and I guess I associate Utah Mormons with more of that conservatism, whereas where I am from, There is a healthier amount of leftist or at least liberal members. For me there isn't a contradiction between leftist ideals and the doctrine of the church, and I guess I get obsessive about wanting people to understand that not every member is a CIA asset :/ Edit: yeah I am coping, we are pretty weird here too but I'm still blaming all the members west of the Rockies on the bad rep 😅

2026-09-09 19:00 Born and raised Utah-n here, my mother was a second-wife to a man 20 years her senior when she was 16 and my uncle is a big-wig-plyg with three wives and a best-seller book and has been on several tv shows like Oprah, Dr. Phil, and is a big business man/political guy who literally got polygamy decriminalized a couple years ago. Lol Utah sucks and it's creepy and weird. Joseph Smith was the highest level of Free Mason one could get to, and they absolutely culture-vulture every single sacred thing. They do call non-mormons gentiles, and we even have there's a lot of creepy shit here, and it goes into all sorts of weird places. Also, the adoption of Native American rituals is nothing foreign to polygamy, my extended family goes to Columbia all the time to do Ayuahuasca and all sorts of other shit.
