Walter Benjamin considered the origin of fascism to be in the original Paris Arcades. The large outdoor shopping malls made of steel where everyone would walk about the marketplace. Observing each other buying things that were meant to give special impressions and shopping for the first mass produced works of art in photography. In an earlier social media episode Liz described the frenzy that social media incites is because the self is being commodified in real time. It was the same for these arcades and for modern cities too. If walking around these arcades, from which modern cities are derived, gave us fascism I fear what walking around in the meta verse will bring.

I mean, the first sounds in the city’s name are literally “mini” and “apple”. So I don’t know that the moniker necessarily indicates self-importance… it seems like a dorky little riff.

Wait a minute hold on one damn second in 1998 I was exactly 14 years old. 🤔 what’s going on here? What is this so-called “podcast “ up too. What kind of Amazon Jeff Beezos CIA psyop is this? I got my eye on you kids. I won’t be gaslight.

That comment about the special kind of alienation you feel when a place that used to be home now feels totally different sums up everything I feel visiting the city I grew up in...my personal search for authenticity is totally about trying to recapture the (possibly imaginary) 1990s version of Seattle I grew up in

Up and coming city vibes!

SF

This makes me so happy…I am from Hudson valley and lived in Ulster County for the time referenced in this episode, and currently still work in Ulster. Folks who moved here during covid from NYC were/are not born and raised in NYC; people from the city, actually FROM there, do not leave. The people who moved here are 100% the folks who moved to NYC in the last 20 years from elsewhere, looking for an *experience* and then following the *experience* trend to Ulster County and surrounding areas. You ask anyone who recently moved here “from NYC” and they’ll tell you that they’re ACTUALLY from Ohio, or Virginia, or Wisconsin, etc. The woodworker/gentleman farmer/multi-media artist/etc aesthetic is so real, and those folks all claim to be “corporate drop-outs.” It’s all very eerie and is literally killing our housing market.

SF

:(

NYCM&AHole

hey Liz, can you hit the recording button? I’m afraid I can’t do that, Brace. Why not? ‘Cause I don’t have any armmmmms!

Nick

I was concerned this would be a bad ep, but it was funny. Though TBH most of the specific stuff you are making fun of might not be that deep. The $500,000 a mid-sized city spends on a stupid marketing campaign for their version of the detachable shirt collar and giving a grant to a guy with a handlebar mustache to open a combination cat barbershop/bowling shoe store isn’t really breaking the bank. It is very annoying, however

Rory Blank

I’ve lived in Austin my entire adult life, longer than anywhere else I’ve ever lived. Being here the last decade feels like watching a place get invaded, conquered and settled by pod people. Everything interesting gets sucked out, the natural landscape gets pushed away and replaced with monuments to when it was around and also axe throwing places. The most interesting thing happening is to look at the new midrise apartment complexes. They are designed to be something the residents never have to leave. They are, in essence, recreating the structure of suburbs as a faux urban environment. The only really notable thing about Austin is that it has become a magnet city for specifically right wing influencer types. Like there’s a growing number of right wing youtubers I’ve seen move here, along, also, with one of heads of Palantir moving here to start a thinktank. I think there’s a concerted effort underway to take the place over, since it’s smaller and more malleable than the other cities in Texas. I would leave but I don’t know how to drive, I physically can’t get out without abandoning my stuff

Corey Reynolds

Nashville(and prob other cities) have the angel wings painted on the side of the buildings everywhere here. Every midwestern white girl will wait around the block for hours for that 5 second pic to post on Instagram. Pathetic.

Gratch

Another name for what you're describing is what I like to call the Schitts Creek Effect

Jessie Cherbak

Damn has Liz also fronted a punk band?

Marina

I was thinking about Schitts Creek the ENTIRE ep! I live in the general area where all the outdoor/Main Street scenes for the show were filmed, and you won’t be surprised to know that each setting in the “town” are just individual buildings 30 minutes apart from each other. And all the indoor scenes were done in production studios downtown. Because, yeah, it’s all a curation. No town actually looks as cute and picturesque as “dumpy, authentic!” Schitts Creek.

Marina

I haaaaate those angel wing pictures. 😩 idk if that makes me a “pick me” girl but I just find them so tacky

Marina

#liveauthentic

Marina

Such a great episode! I’d love if this one could be “unlocked” on YouTube. To me, this is such a good introduction to TrueAnon to send to people.

Authentically Liz - the slice of life Liz Franczak anime

Evan Scott

yeah i went to bok once and i wanted to jump off the fucking roof lol

Evan Scott

i feel like what's happening in the gentrifying areas of philly is something that comes after this city authentic thing though. all of the formerly abandoned warehouses that have the axe throwing bars in them are being torn down and replaced with grey panel mid-rise apartment buildings that are supposed to have retail on the first floor but never get it because the rent is way too expensive

Evan Scott

next after city authentic is city bedroom where everyone is just a former 'office' wfh person where they get everything delivered via amazon or doordash or whatever and there's no commercial or entertainment anything and all the bug people leave their cardboard apartment like once a week

Jake Reynolds

God I hate Minneapolis so much. Wouldn't have it any other way

Dinosaur

Authentically Liz is a show where Liz goes to live in a mansion with 6 other Liz's, and they are all competing to prove who is the most authentic Liz.

punkademic

I’m a big fan of Banks and happy to hear him on the episode

Philipdelphia

Yeah, I feel like the majority of the episode could be titled “stuff that annoys us”. I get that the hipster trope (which isn’t even that accurate anymore as things like craft beer are popular) and cities fighting for a plastic “authentic” experience is pretty lame, but the alternative of becoming a strip mall 8 lane access road is objectively worse.

Margaret Nersten

I’m gonna ponder this out loud before listening to the episode but I wonder how this book compares to Sharon Zukin’s Naked City. She has some chapters on authenticity that I found rly interesting

Kompromatic

This episode was great. I’m a sicko who got a graduate degree in urban planning. Most urban planning scholarship is all fake liberal bullshit that attempts to address problems of capitalism without ever admitting as much and I’m glad this guest gets it. The cruel irony is that the many urban planning graduates go on to work for development/consulting firms that are directly responsible for the sprawl and gentrification we were supposedly fighting against. That or you go work for public institutions that facilitate this kind of development through infernal “public-private partnerships.” Fuck I could go on about this all day!

A S

I know being anti-car is annoying and useless, but it really can't be overstated how awful they are.

Colin Helpio

Talking about burgers got Liz wylin' 😂

Kevin Price

Bok bar is so depressing. It’s such a beautiful and massive school and it’s just wasted on cheesy restaurants. At least it wasn’t torn down

greg

not liz literally described my "life as liz"

Natalie J

People think Hunchback of Notre Dame is about a hunchback, an old church, a gypsy, and a terrible priest. The plot of the book is actually a front for Victor Hugo’s extensive tirades against the redesign of Paris, which are at least half the book.

birdo

Brace with the ratemypoop reference got me

Natalie J

The Austin-as-model thing is true but I also think there wasn’t enough credit given to Portland and Kool early 2000’s Williamsburg.

Natalie J

To whit: I lived in Baton Rouge for the 2000’s while going to school (a frankly abysmal small city) and around that time there was lots & lots & lots of local ink spilled about modeling it after Austin and creating infrastructure to attract not just university people & state workers but something called “the creative class” as an antidote to that.

katherine rodgers

The funny thing about the specific word ‘infrastructure’ is that Austin’s is abysmal - massively missed the civic window to plan appropriately for all the growth they courted. A lot of green-washing while being clueless about smart planning. San Antonio has done a much much better job connecting greenways, building high quality park space, and integrating new mixed use models in a way that is specific to the city. That being said, the Austin developer signature is definitely showing up down there as well.

Natalie J

“Liberal” is too kind. Urban Planning majors are almost always programs about preparing people specifically to work in urban development and push “new urban” policies.

Natalie J

The Time Haters, when the Haters go back in time to hate on & shoot plantation owners.

katherine rodgers

Inevitable that they would start there for sure! Would definitely love to understand Portland and early Williamsburg trajectory better. For Austin specifically… it’s interesting that the overly branded, overly marketed city experience Austin is associated with is the result of a loooot of California money overstaying their SXSW welcome and saying ‘hey, we can sell this!’ And then the city letting said developers take the reigns of the city’s futures.

Philipdelphia

Yeah, I mean I think you need to (and this episode) needs to realize as annoying as some of these places are, the alternative of decaying urban decay is pretty awful too.

Bud Light

KEEP LIVERMORE NAME OUT YOUR MOUTH

justdave

People who 'love' such n' such city all have a superiority complex

Jeremy hatrington

But growing up in the 90s, 30 minutes south of Amherst / Northampton - you better believe they were authentic as fuck to a punk teenager from the soulless burbs. Subway or no subway.

Jeremy hatrington

(But don’t live there so it is not authentic hate)

Babyspringtime

My kink is yung chomksy describing who boba fett is

sgl

Ooh ty

Kompromatic

You are 100% correct. I meant liberal as in taking as a given things like the free market, private property, and individual rights (maybe liberalism is the better word?). Then they try to dress it up with things like “cultural competence” and “equity.” So it’s liberal in both senses I guess. It’s some sick shit.

Mule K.

Placing Atlanta and Albany on the same level is offensive tbh

Daniel Rohe

I will NOT be reading the comments, not sure if it was mentioned, but RE: Brace's San Francisco story, must watch the "New San Francisco" sketch from Mr. Show.

Polly Walnuts

Happening big time in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Upside: bands actually come here now. Downside: pretty much everything else, not the least of which is the ballooning rent in exchange for a couple of microbreweries and an even shittier, more overburdened and underfunded public education system. When you've grown up here and moved in and out of it for your adult life, you can actually see the contrast (namely, the fact that there isn't actually really any improvement to quality of life, and maybe even the opposite), and witness the fact that there's still no money going to where it counts (I'm repeating myself, but I can't stress enough the degradation of the public school system since I was school-aged, and how much worse the roads are as well), it is impossible to justify spending 2k for a 1 bedroom apartment, even if it is cheaper than some other places. My first apartment cost $325 a month, and that was kind of lavish for a one bedroom. And I'm only almost 40, so it's not like we're talking about *that* long ago. But people just keep coming, because it's a new Austin or something? And hey, there's beer! Lots and lots and lots of fancy beer! 700 special breweries of special, special beer!

Polly Walnuts

Anyway, this guy's awesome. Definitely gonna read that.

Louie

I'd take the Liz Pill

Shoshana

this ep is SO good…born and raised in philly (and still here) and this all fits it like a glove 😪

This ep reminded me of the incredible early Portlandia sketch where all these women were gushing over this guy who was a “woodworker” and it cuts to him making the most fucked up 3-legged chair out of tree branches
