Great episode, guys. Really enjoyed this one. It's crazy how guys like this call themselves "redpilled" in a kind of gnostic sense. Like, they think escaping illusion and being connected to objective reality simply means becoming a conduit for the ugliest, most savage face of humanity. I actually wrote a novel last year with some characters who go through this. I called the book "Chromatic Pharmacy", envisioning a kind of marketplace where young people buy personalities the way old people buy pills. The whole color pill stuff has a lot of gnostic implications in general.

I don't really think that's an applicable comparison to "feminism writ large". For all the critiques one might have of various waves/forms of it, feminism is still a mass political movement with collective empowerment as its primary goal. The online MRA/PUS/etc. shit is almost completely individualized in its messaging, like a prosperity gospel for alienated, atomized, self-loathing men and boys.

I think the Girlboss/"elite feminism" culture is probably the closest equivalent, but the big differences are that all the celebrated figures are genuinely powerful (politicians, corporate executive, legitimately elite athletes/entertainers) unlike the manosphere guys who are barely more materially successful than their followers, and that there's consequently no direct transaction/communication as there is with guys like Tate.

MLM is a super interesting comparison, especially since so many of the biggest ones were founded when way more women were homemakers (Mary Kay, Tupperware) or exploded in religious or immigrant communities (Thirty-One Gifts, Herbalife) where it's more common. They promise these women a supportive community outside of the family and and independent passive income stream. Notable also that almost all the product lines (cosmetics/clothing, housewares, "healing herbs"/supplements) hearken to traditional feminine virtues.

This was a great episode. One of my husband’s best friends has a miserable life mostly due to poverty and also his own choices. He keeps falling in love with women who aren’t available and then getting completely crushed and all he’s getting out of these experiences is that women are cruel. On the “courtly love” concept- reminds me of a different angle on the same concept by CS Lewis in “Surprised By Joy.” I find it truly beautiful. Lewis substitutes the word “joy” for “desire”. His premise is that human beings have a deep and unquenchable longing that we’ll never be able to fulfill on earth. The fullness of that desire is experienced when we die and reunite with God, and this is “joy”. We may catch little glimmers of joy on earth when we love each other, or experience pleasure, or laugh, and this only wets our appetites for a fuller experience of “joy”. His belief is that whenever we pursue and obsess over trifles, we are really craving fulfillment for our truer, deeper desire to be known, loved, and one with God. Obviously, you don’t have to see God as “the answer” to that longing. It could be a craving for community, spirituality, belonging, whatever you believe is the ultimate Truth. But the principle helps me understand people like MGTOW and incels. They are craving an answer to the base human cry for love and acceptance in an unhealthy way, and lashing out like little children when they feel rejected by the world.
