It's a hot topic in the news, nobody 'did it first'

original gay pussy eatah

When are y’all gonna *brace noise* those reptilian Catholic skanks from Red Scare

Maura Willey

went to Bob Marley's house in Kingston a few years ago and they showed us 1) bullet holes in the side of the house from an FBI assassination attempt and 2) his full denim bedroom set (bedspread and pillowcases, didn't see the sheets with my own eyes). apparently he was a big denim guy

Francis Mahlie

Only 25min in and just want to acknowledge the unacknowledged Liz joke, "bare-bottoms." It got a good chuckle out of me.

CT

The FBI was in Jamaica?

ClownBabee24

Liz thinks the Jags are getting too big for their britches? Nah we got further than we were supposed to

Kamran Husain

a gov agency acting outside its boundaries of authority whaaat

waterbird

Yes! Defend the forest!

CT

I’m not saying it isn’t possible, but it would be much more likely that it was the CIA

Kamran Husain

please bring the judge bros on the show

Andrew Irwin

I know brace will change his mind on raw denim once he tries it, brace if you’re seeing this I will send a pair to a PO Box for you if you want

MurseInDaPurse

Can’t wait for the Toronto show y’all. Our mayor just plopped 2 officers on every subway train to harass the homeless population and we got cops patrolling on horseback in -30 degree winter. You’re gonna love it here.

meyer

yess!

One thing that wasn't mentioned was the fact that, as your J6 episode would predict, the Georgia domestic terrorism law passed in 2017 in response to the Pulse nightclub and Emmanuel AME shootings, and was sold to the public as a measure against "white supremacist" and "far-right" violence.

Char Kelly

In Somerville Mass. the city is trying to also build a $100 million police headquarters and in order to do so they will need to remove loads and loads of trees from a neighborhood that has virtually no trees. Smaller scale than a urban forest but similar struggle. Come visit it while y’all are freezing your bottoms off in Boston

Char Kelly

Also shout out to the public comment heads

loafman

"A Brief History of Seven Killings" by Marlon James for an excellent fictionalization of this

Sebastian Puga

further confirmation that Brace is in fact a menswear icon

NYCM&AHole

Napalm cop city for bacon party

Natalie

i don't know if i can stomach this one from the description.....i miss jen shah :(

Jonica Stewart

Thanks so much for covering this! I'm a Dekalb resident, I canvassed the neighborhoods talking to the community, called in on the city council and I was at the "riot"/march. It's so sad this is happening in my neighborhood

Danny

when Liz said stop cop city… I felt that

jordan

The NYT had a similarly awful article a couple years ago when federal police deputized as US marshals essentially executed Michael Reinoehl. For those who don’t remember he was an anti fascist who shot a patriot prayer psycho when confronted by them in the streets of Portland, after which he was tracked down in Washington, and murdered by federal agents acting as US marshals who sprayed fire across a suburban neighborhood block unprovoked. The NYT subsequently printed essentially a press release written by the federal cops saying they returned fire in a gunfight. They may have since changed their article to include mitigating info but it was completely unhinged bootlicking when it came out

TrueAnonPod

Yeah they pretty much assassinated him. LOTS of left wing people also called him a fed and agent too, which was pretty awful.

Claire Simon

Yeah I’m up north and I remember that very vividly. It’s been memoryholed into oblivion too which freaks me out

jordan

Thanks for doing this btw, stop cop city is so important as a roadmap for future environmental resistance. So much of the environmental action in this country I think people support in abstract but feel helpless to intervene in because of how physically remote the conflicts tend to be (ie cutting of the last stands of old growth in remote areas) .Weelaunee forest is a part of the terrain so many people call home that I think lends itself to a much greater number of people being involved, not only in forest defense action explicitly, but growing to identify in real ways as land that is a real part of their life - going to raves, shows, plant walks, or just a beautiful place to be in what increasingly feels like an alien urban hell scape of property development, gentrification, etc.

CactiFlowFlow

Used to live in Atlanta and was rly confused by Brace’s comment at the end. Apparently, there is an “Emeryville” in California? “Emoryville” is not Emory University’s secession from the city of Atlanta (yet!).

Josh Woods

Cop City sounds like Riotsville on steroids, sheesh.

demisays

as someone who was in portland during that summer almost all of the national reporting on the protests including the situation with michael reinoehl was complete bullshit. the only good reporting was like local reporters on twitter LOL which was not reassuring at all. definitely broke my brain to read reports about protests i had been at in the nyt that included absolute mistruths

Josh Woods

oh my god I left this comment before I even got to the Riotsville part let's goooo

Major bit me

Ironically, Keisha Lance Bottoms is vice chair of civic engagement and voter protection at the DNC.

turbinity

any shot on an ep about the developing Louisville/Breonna Taylor news that cops are seemingly randomly targeting projects at the behest of developers to flip their apartments once evicted?

Michael S. Judge

the rhythm & melody of "since Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge," with the words "I'm breaking in raw denim at the co-ed San Francisco jail"

Sean

Brace don’t do it the raw denim cartel is trying to distract you from the true people’s pant: the Levi’s 501

Brendan Garcia

If it’s a Japanese block print, it’s not indigo, it’s Prussian Blue.

BTULTRA

Great work as always. Really glad you guys covered this. I live here and the mood of the city is fucking terrible right now.

Eponymous1

Thanks for the excellent ep. Not to nitpick but I think it’s spelled Tortuguita.

Jessie Cherbak

Keisha Lancebottoms is a procedurally generated Dwarf Fortress name

Daniel Bear

damn that ep of atlanta “the woods” feeling prescient rn

AbeLinkin

Where are they putting it? Just curious as I used to live in Somerville (2015-2021).

sammi sweetheart

be nice to the skanks. they don’t need to be held accountable, they’re mostly harmless. and more importantly, it is gay to care

Junior Carmichael

Has anyone added "Brace Bottom" to the Wikipedia nickname list yet?

Zzz

Yo get Trish Wood on the pod

90 Washington right outside of Union Square directly next to a brand new green line station. It’s not set in stone yet but that is the goal 🫠

LankyShooter

Here’s some outfit I’d like to know more about. https://www.ttpoa.org. They’ve been getting way to much cred from the competitive shooting/IG tacticool scene. Wondering if uvalde cops went through their instructor network ughh

The City of Atlanta and DeKalb County officials are going to announce today some bogus agreement to make Cop City more "environmentally friendly" and throw some money at the local community. Cop City is an example of how city leaders working in conjunction with wealthy business leaders try to keep law enforcement and emergency responders happy by throwing shiny objects at them instead of providing better pay and benefits. Both the ATL police and fire departments have been hit hard by staffing shortages because pay in the city is significantly lower than the burbs. The business interests do not want to see tax hikes to support higher pay (although it does look like there will be new contracts with a much overdue pay bump). So, instead, the city is building Cop City, which it hopes will placate the unions and keep them from pushing too hard for big concessions as they negotiate their contracts in 2023. This is why police and fireman have such elaborate funerals. Back in the early 20th century, firefighters died all the time because there were no building codes or fire suppression systems. Cities could not afford to raise pay and instead would offer a death benefit which covered funeral costs. Each time the union would negotiate for a new contract, the only concessions they would get would be for the funeral. First, it would be getting a nice coffin. Then, a special mass at the big cathedral. And then they would add a public parade with all the different firefighting units coming to march. Cop City is pretty much along those lines.

My funky ass is in classic Levi’s as I type this San Francisco pants for the true Gold Bug

Cop city will never be built

2026-09-09 19:00 can u guys consider taking about that streamer who got caught looking at deepfakes of other streamers (including the woman who baked his wedding cake) live on stream? Idk if there’s enough there to do an episode but it’s sooooo bizarre and pathetic and idk… ai deepfakes seem dystopian enough to make it on the pod assuming there’s enough to talk about. i admit im a bit biased bc the guy who did it was at one point the best speedrunner in the world for my favorite game lol

damn, I can't believe the right wingers are using left wing vocabulary to advance a right wing agenda! I better put my Twitter Brain to good use and decide that this means the leftists are actually rightists.

Doug Cartel

I think the differences between american police depts are defined by regions and history rather than states, so police in Chicago have a different culture from Georgian ones, and those ones have more in common with Kentucky cops than california cops etc. Midwest cops have their roots in the south just because of all the ex-confederates who infested that region after the civil war. oh yeah, just saw that NY threw out a case due to 'prosecutor misconduct', because they failed to turn over evidence for 3 cases, so this cop who had like, 350 fucking convictions thrown out now gets his own case thrown out, and I have to think the police union was doing shifty things there. But yeah, there is a long and proud history going back at least to the spanish american war/Moro insurgency of soldiers fighting guerrillas and then coming back to the States to practice what they learned on political activists. Probably goes back longer.

a clash of purple

From what I've heard from interviews with former cops, the culture in all American big city police departments is identical, or close enough. I think the differences really just come down to how much class or race oppression your local police force is obliged to enforce.

Hank

Deepfakes already have and will be a new deep and dark age for slander, false incrimination ,and ,most of all pornography. You can now create convincing voice profiles for famous politicians. I genuinely believe that you will have Tucker Carlson making commentary over some Obama deepfake claiming that he is a true communist and they are taking over and we need to act now. I read some of James Mason's Siege and there are scary similarities that are already happening. I fear that they will openly call for a new age of pinkertons to murder genuine workers movements enmass. I genuinely wish those who are serious about bringing about even the most milktoast forms of socialism are armed and ready to fight back. I wish you all good luck; you are the unsung heroes of the movement away from late stage capitalism.

Scott H Williams

I work for one of the subcontractors. I would really like to get some kind of letter going around to appeal to the company to bail on the contract but don’t know how to find anyone who shares that view in the opaque national corporate network. Any tips?

Scott

The Atlanta Way stems from the peace that was kept during the civil rights era by white political/corporate leadership working with black movement leaders and continues to this day in concessions made to corporate leaders as much of the wealthier populations live outside city limits in the large metro area but have corporate headquarters in the city

Patrick

get some kind of letter going and start asking people!

George P

TrueAnon brought a cold front to Boston with them. -30 wind chill here tomorrow morning. try not to die please.

xasquim

We love John Tory, don't we folks?

waterbird

ya if you see ppl in person get a conversation going. Maybe if you have a bunch of email addresses, send out a mass email from an anonymous account?

J

you should do a podcast on the ATL Missing and Murdered children. I think youll find relevant info to this contemporary moment and the "Atlanta Way" phenomenon

Gabi

Leave the Jags alone Liz…

loved to hear hometown heroes, SF BOS mtg public comment heads, get a shout out bc they’re a wild bunch

Shiv

would love follow up on this, recall reading whispers on twitter a couple of years ago

Mayoral Name check, first name edition: Keisha is, by most Black women with the name, pronounced “Keesha.” That said, hearing Brace call Lance Bottoms “Ke$ha” gave me a giggle

Barbara Coady

Respectfully, there are a few aspects of Cop City you missed. It's being built next to a lower income Black community long subjected to police harassment. The 90 sq-acre compound will have five shooting ranges, a landing zone for a Huey helicopter, a burn area for firefighter training , an mock city for practicing urban warfare, and more. Cop City is expected to attract police forces nationwide to take advantage of their facilities. It will operate round the clock, 365 days/yr. The noise from the shooting ranges will replace the tranquility of the public park where the compound is going. The citizens have voiced their opposition at multiple city council meetings, yet the project goes forward. Check out the corporate sponsors to get an idea of who all's in favor.

Daniel Goffe

Vital episode. Excellent stuff.
