30 years war reminds me of Brace's postwar vision for Germany: Returning to all the individual principalities before German unification

Taylor Leibel

Thank you for furthering Christmanite thought, I'll be listening intently while grilling my morning roast

Middleton

Hell yeah! Hell on Earth was one damn good series!

Demented Avenger

Brace is totally right about a Polish peasant not wanting to see a Swede. Right after the Thirty Years War, Sweden invaded the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (partly at the urging of the Lithuanians), and in the ensuing Deluge, Poland lost a greater percentage of its population than it would lose to the Nazis. So, making a joke, Brace is historically accurate.

K H

Darker later? Agree 100%.

K H

Inshallah

K H

Anything from mention of a "tape worm story" to 4 minutes in I missed.

Chris

There are surfs at the beach right now

K H

Brace is right. When I heard that episode I was like...3 floors? Not that high. I've looked over 3rd floor balconies and thought "I bet I could survive that." Especially if you're landing on soft ass wet European soil. I bet the one guy that got injured was probably only hurt because the 2 other dudes fell on top of him before they ran away. If you want to kill someone make sure you go 5 stories or higher. Ideally 12+, but at 5 they should be busted up enough to give plausible deniability in that short ass town(assuming they land on cement). Actually, make sure the impact surface is hard and relatively even, because that is a big factor you might forget in the heat of the moment. A partial impalement could slow them down and be survivable. Think about stuff is all I'm saying.

Chib

I do know the Worm, and he is NOT to be trusted

Doug Cartel

Really though, it should be darker, later.

I enjoyed hearing Liz ask about agnostics after Brace joked about inventing atheism, after which Matt started talking about Gnosticism. I can't tell if Liz didn't realize that's what Matt was talking about or just didn't want to correct him.

Ian H

And then Brace fumbling his way into Pascal's Wager

Ian H

According to the Hussites they landed in a big pile of manure, which is in keeping with Brace's "world of shit" view.

TrueAnonPod

Worm once drove me and one of the legendary Zaidi brothers to a party at an art school in LA but then just drank beer in his van the whole time

Jessica S

The series is amazing. I’ve listened to each episode twice to soak everything in. Also my adhd brain jumps around too much, lol.

J98

Lotta cross talk from the peanut gallery in this one. Keep it to yourself yung..

pixelsnbits

"Not to sound like a Trotskyist" - Liz .. but what if you just embraced it instead? Nothing to be afraid of.

Clint Pelvis

big wil wil wheaton vibes coming off chris in the ep

Valentino

They made movie about emojis

Jared Bauer

Tfw you’re ancestry is German and Dutch

Kira

it's very similar to a monoid

Alexander Johnson

Personally, I loved how they rode on that misunderstanding. That's what friends do when there's a misunderstanding: listen to each other and maybe learn from it. But that's just what the Archon of Friendship whispered into my ear while I slumbered after consuming hashish and bright red & rose gold acrylic paints.

cam

its in the category of endofunctors

Faye

love the comparison of the shoe movie to dutch paintings of commodities... Im eagerly awaiting Liz's e-flux era!!

Michael S. Judge

I've never seen Christ's foreskin, but St. Elizabeth's in Kansas City, MO (named for both Elizabeth of Hungary and Elizabeth Ann Seton) has Christ's entire cock. I think it's on loan to the Smithsonian so they could show it side-by-side with John Dillinger's

sandragl

Another great ep. I study 17thc so went in a bit skeptical. The history was spot on tho. The John Dee stuff was particularly impressive.

Ian H

Honestly, the presentation style was super entertaining, but the way it would turn on a dime between riffing/banter and and superdense Christman info dumps caught me off guard frequently. I didn't repeat every ep, but I skipped back *a lot*.

Gulb

How did Martin Luther's ideas spread if it made the printing presses all explode?! Makes no sense!

Michelle

“Mutant, fucked up, lumpy person” - fantastic.

Swimaroo

I REALLY gotta know how the DeWitt's were seasoned. Was there chimichurri, is that why there are so much Argentinian BBQ in Amsterdam? Were they served with mayonnaise???????

Taylor Leibel

It's now been stolen by the bible museum

Sam

Future Chairman of the Belden Program, Matt Christman?

justdave

The Archon of friendship once drove me and one of the legendary Zaidi brothers to a party at an art school in LA but then just drank beer in his van the whole time

Back Bench Pizza LLC

I once wrongfully beat worm up over stolen gear and when I tried to apologize to him six months later, he had no recollection of me or the event

Arielle Curtin

What a thrill! Four of my faves together! Special shout-out to Liz for “concommittantly”!

Dan

Americans learn about the XYZ Affair in Elementary School (Considering what isn't covered)? Is that just to rationalize your national hatred of the French?

Zzz

Lame episode. The dudes sound like they’re into dungeons and dragons

Natalie

ik tradition is one free one paid but why have an episode that's basically advertising a paywalled podcast be behind a paywall 😂

Natalie

learning unpopular history that led us to where we are today is cool actually

Zzz

Lmaoo

Timothy

Love the period musical interludes—they really set the mood

Brandon Lucero

That’s just knowing the market. Advertise to the ones who already pay on Patreon. No one has to create a new account. Haha

mexicanhalloween .

pretty sure she'd rather not start cranking out useless newspapers and wrecking for the benefit finance capital and ego

Blank

So…Ezra Klein (who I listen to for masochistic reasons) just quoted part of the same passage from High Weirdness that Liz quoted from in one of the synanon eps 👀👀

Robert Sayre

My favorite painting is Anselm Kiefer "Bohemia Lies by the Sea". It's in the Met, but Bohemia does not lie by the sea. :)

Wojciech

Will there be an episode on that Dallas Humber Terrorgram chick?

Joseph Gavin Syverson

I think the Chapo boys are a little out of their depth on this one

Mike Penix

I read a book on the reformation and it included a wood cut of the devil shitting into Martin Luther's mouth

chronye

they talk about that in episode 4

Christopher Price

It's 11:30 pm, my workweek is over and I'm dying to "and I'm playing that thing like a harmonica"
