Wow this is a real important ep — chronic pain listeners everywhere will feel very seen!! thanks for this one y’all

Moonwatcher13

that point around minute 24 where y'all talk about how the act of getting it (dope, gambling, whatever) dos more for you then the substance itself, man I fucking felt that in my bones. thanks for putting it into words.

NYCM&AHole

Didn’t know you were a member of the kiss aemy

I’ve totally experienced the physical symptoms of mental illness. When my anxiety was at its worst I would have extremely painful stomach aches and headaches and it was absolutely a physical manifestation of severe mental illness. Thank you for speaking about some of these symptoms

otis

Yeah, yeah. Yeah.

porridgeluvr69

the part about having to smoke crack to do anything— YES. i’m experiencing this right now, im not able to control myself on “feed” style apps and have had to cut them out, but this leaves me out of group chats and a lot of social shit bc everything is centred around instagram and tiktok. I have no ability to moderate my use on apps like that and 100% do feel like an addict around my phone, but it’s so normalized to spend 8 hours a day on social media that my friends don’t always have empathy for me needing to quit. Super bizarre and a bit horrifying.

Char Kelly

Please YC put this out with 1 other BB original ditty as a record

absoluteboi

i went through a similar manifestation of really weird physical symptoms, like a sudden onset of joint, nerve, and muscle pain. and i couldnt explain it, but i was having extreme anxiety over multiple things, but compounded by the thought that i was dying. eventually after a couple of months of doctors visits and tests and shit, eventually my doctor prescribed lexapro and that helped. at least until the bills started coming in in the following months. most expensive panic attack ever. thing is though, im been following the works of Gabor Mate and Robert Sapolsky for over a decade now, and I was aware of how stress can completely destabilize your body, even if nothing else is 'wrong' with you. But even still, once you get in that hole, it's so hard to get back out.

hhannahh

would you consider releasing this one as a free episode? wanting to share it with so many people to help them understand my own CPTSD/chronic health issues, and I bet others feel the same

Kirk

Yo please unlock this one for the normie gf’s and bf’s we all have

Shiv

i didn’t know i needed Brace “Autotune” Belden

absoluteboi

id rather have a watch that i can have an authenticator app on, thats really the only reason why i cant ditch my smartphone entirely. so, i disagree on wearables. like IOT, yeah the majority of gadgets are garbage, but you're disparaging the technology, but the grievances listed are specific to implementations.

The brain is an organ in the body and it can contain defects unique to itself. Even in a comparatively simple organ like the heart, some arrhythmias can be missed even where they could be measured. Many people have traumatic past events, just as they might have herniated discs, but it doesn't necessitate mental illness. The disease already existed because it's a product of the defect, not the event. Because the brain isn't perceived as its own organ with its own defects people sometimes magnify events in their past so it seems logical to be mentally ill. Yet it isn't logical because of a fundamental defect in the organ responsibile for logic and perception. Therefore you have illogical perception. The factor is internal not extrinsic Like many things external events may intersect with physical and genetic factors or cause some physical conditions. Some people however are simply walking around with the mental equivalent of no skin, but we can't see that because how the brain processes information is not accurately understood. There is no pace maker for the brain. I look forward to more Danzig Eric Cartman crossovers.

Brace is a real one. After a show I went up to him gave him a big hug, and thanked him with my 11 month sobriety chip. He gave me his number when I asked about AA meetings in LA cause I was heading out there for school. Wicked cool, love from Boston his favorite place

TrueAnonPod

listen there was nothing “auto” about it

Great. It was obvious that Liz has great pitch sense but now we know Brace does as well.

I recommend the 2003 novel Feed. Really solid sci-fi about this topic. Focuses on youth addiction to tech. Enjoyed the ep.

Beautiful, insightful conversation. I listen to podcasts (like TrueAnon) & documentaries to block out my own thoughts, much like how Brace describes reading & listening to audiobooks. I can't help but be reminded of the "emotional regulation" style of listening B&L were talking about in the previous episode in relation to spotify playlists. Fantastic back to back episodes. <3

Ian H

Sort of tangential, but some of this ep reminded me of a half-formed thought that's been kicking around in my head for a few days. I read a profile of Paris Hilton in the Guardian, in which she both describes her time at CEDU and Provo Canyon in horrific detail and describes herself in another passage as the original influencer. It reminded me of something Michael Judge said on an early Death/Corner about Victorian British boarding school, to the effect of the seeming mystery of wealthy & powerful families sending their precious boys off to be abused being explained as a system for producing the perfect imperial managers. Like, the physical suffering and sexual humiliation created upper-class men with a deep-seated psychotic need to dominate, ready to inflict that trauma on the Bengalis or whoever else. I wonder, in that light, about whether something like The Game, which seems to me to involve constantly creating and sharing your personal identity and then having it brutally, publicly torn away, repeated over and over, might be part of what allowed Paris Hilton to pioneer the creation of the self as both stylized fictional character and totalizing brand identity. I dunno, like I said, not yet fully cogent but I think there's something there.

Joseph Walford

“Doing exercise makes me feel good because I’m not thinking” made me have to sit down and pause. Cracking ep, love from Blighty

omg no way! I'm a big fan of Brad, very excited to listen

I think one of the tiers should have an AA meeting available chaired by brace.

Two thoughts. Blue curtains tumblr post and the dead dove do not eat tag on ao3 does have benefits to ur brain

Only 25 min in but this is already really psychoanalytic without them even realizing.

Alexa

The way this episode is a direct response to my most recent therapy session 🚨‼️ Seriously though, not finished and this is already one of my favorite eps. Loving the Vulnerable Brace series

Chris Hildreth

The idea that doctors are still associating pain to random findings in spinal imaging should be considered malpractice in 2023. With everything we know about pain science it just shows how far behind and frankly negligent A LOT of healthcare providers are in terms of continued education. A tall conviction from me- an athlete with a GED but I mean damn..

Lebron James

I agree, these past two episodes have been really insightful

Major bit me

I think a lot of professors who complain about disinterested, clay pigeon students - they have not truly internalized that the vast majority of people taking their required general education courses are not there for any reason other than ticking the box and getting out ASAP. It’s literally just a mountain of expensive paperwork, these superfluous courses, that the job market is demanding teenagers and young adults drag themselves through because they can’t get a degree job otherwise. It feels so damn absurd memorizing a bunch of fun facts about the solar system for a science class when you are getting a business degree, or an electrical engineer having to take a communications course where the instructor just reads off a PowerPoint for 2 hours straight. As if they don’t know that 90% of what we learn is forgotten in less than a year!

Josh

Please make this free so I can share it

Noel Haren

This was phenomenal. Brace’s shithead literature recommendations don’t disappoint, I remember loving Nico Walker on TrueAnon a while back. Real recovery in action right here

Robert Sayre

I don't think you mention this term in this episode, but social media uses what's called "variable rewards", and this definitely does resemble gambling and other forms of addiction. The parts about the downsides being the interesting part are in that area.

Vita Eve

u can download the file with the ... button so u can put it on an mp3 player and show ur friends

Every professor is aware of this. Most, I would guess, still believe in the value of general ed. while being aware that it is a failure for a number of reasons. What is really striking is how many students are basically incapable of reading seriously, constructing an argument using evidence, or generally writing coherently at all. I don't think many people outside of secondary and higher education are aware of the kind of students even name-brand schools are graduating. We are on our way to constructing a post-literate society and have no idea what the consequences are going be.

Matthew

Very much reminded me of Todd Haynes’ fantastic film “Safe” — recommend to anyone looking for a (very exaggerated) cinematic portrayal of this sort of stuff. Really interesting ep, though, always felt there was a link between stomach problems, depression, migraines.

Oliver Crane

My body scores this episode a 9.6/10

Ok, I honest to goodness believe that I have honest to goodness gained honest to goodness Buddhist Enlightenment™️. But basically, check out Daniel M. Ingram. Otherwise, yes! I can see when my pain is “real” (ok, it’s always real but is the cause from blunt force trauma real?). Getting rid of pain then for me becomes more about how much will power I have (“the will power instinct”, “the upside of stress”, “the joy of movement” all by Kelly McGonical) and of course Žižek’s “the only emotion that doesn’t deceive is anxiety. All other emotions are fake”.

AJ

I’m not one to comment on episodes but this was really fantastic. For what it’s worth I’ve also found that devoting yourself to improving the lives of those around you however you can is one of the best ways to cope with feelings of existential dread and despair

The phone is making me and everyone around me fucking crazy and I feel like an asshole boomer for pointing it out!!!!! What’s so meta (sorry) is that this fucking podcast contributes to my crazy. I have a parasocial relationship with Brace and Liz. And I listen to them talk so I don’t have to hear my own thoughts. I accept there ideas and feel superior because it’s alternative to main stream media but it’s not really, it’s all the same, this show included. Being on my phone makes me feel like a cow at slaughterhouse who is being forced to eat constantly.

ploob

I don't know dude, I just drink blood

Brace will even suck your dick if you pirate the mp3

ploob

9.6/10 cogent!

The conversation on somatoform disorder is really interesting. Reminds me of someone I know who's undergone some really serious trauma and always has difficult to diagnose medical issues that at times just go away.

ploob

We need to get you a spinal/neural surgery STAT!

ploob

I kinda inferred(intuited) Liz was thinking about body hack type tech.. maybe

ploob

I swear I'm not trolling you, I just got a lot out of this episode and like the same comments as you. I heard once that the brain is incapable of feeling pain, like locally to the organ. Which trips me out, seeing that it is all neurons/nerves(right)..? Is that b.s. ? Untestable hypothesis but you seem brain smart THANKS BYE

One of my favorite episodes you guys have done. Glad to know I’m not alone in feeling like this but at the same time a little upset people suffer as I do.

so much going on in this ep, and i’m only half way thru but hat tip to Liz for her commitment to personal privacy 👏🏽

LOL i hit post seconds before Brad told the story about the email from the assisted suicide guy so uh yeah. creating content doesn’t mean you have to be exposed to the entire world

Juliette DeMaso

Oh doctor’s ask you what’s going on in your life, when they want to deny you treatment, especially for pain, or when insurance wants to deny treatment; be very careful. Everyone has a Patient Monitoring Program and a NarxScare score, private companies running a massive data racket, across all 50 states, using assorted criteria to algorithmically predict “risk”, you have no control over this scoring or tabulating, you have no ability to remediate, most of us don’t even know this exists. “Psychology” is used to deny agency, to tell you what you say has to be doubted and verified by an authority; body language analysis shit.. but via surveillance tech. It plays on drug war hysteria, predation on the marginalized, crafting narratives about addiction and social status, character, phrenology 21st century style.

Martin Kasey

For CPTSD symptom management skills, I strongly recommend the book Growing Beyond Survival: A Self-Help Toolkit For Managing Traumatic Stress

shampooflasks

what a killer episode, you should make this shit public, too good for patreon only 🔥🚬

Shfifty_five

It's a backlash to the opioid crisis. Yes chronic pain can be caused by psychology but not always. The DEA monitors docs heavily and even well meaning ones will deny patients adequate chronic pain meds or even cut them off. Patients with insane injuries and chronic spinal injuries often from fucked up surgeries have been denied leading to horrible consequences including suicide. This denial after a bad surgery sent me into a series of addiction to illegally purchased drugs. and alcohol. I even went to a chronic pain rehab that told us all we needed meditation couldn't even use suboxone (what regular addicts take) to help. Luckily I moved and got my life back after taking suboxone and sublicade by using the recovery system in a better state for addicts instead of patients. But there are those less lucky who are no longer here. Fuck the DEA

Shfifty_five

To note, yes chronic pain can be often caused by psychology but not always. It wasn't for me... Post O Crisis the DEA conrolled docs heavily where even well meaning ones will deny patients adequate pain meds or cut them off. These patirnts include people with insane injuries like chronic spinal injuries from accidents and they're denied meds leading to horrible consequences for their lives. This denial after a bad surgery sent me into a series of addictions to illegally purchased drugs. and alcohol. I even went to a chronic pain rehab that told us all we needed was AA and meditation but couldn't even use suboxone (what regular addicts take) to help. It was orthodox AA based.(that's not all AA, I know it helps people, and Recovery Dharma is really great) Luckily I moved to a better state and got my life back after taking suboxone and sublicade by using the recovery system for addicts instead of pain patients. I have a good life now. But there are those less lucky who are no longer here. Fuck the DEA

I still have a clear memory of watching that dumb hype video where two cartoons being like "Ve Arr proud to introdoos GoogleGoggles" Anybody remember that commercial where the investor guy has that dongle on his glasses and he's verbally commanding it to scroll through a windows 95 drop down menu they did a good job making screaming alone in a park look normal just another way rich people emulate the people that suffer the most from their existence

mac

Really fuckin interesting episode, thanks yall

LET ME DELETE MY ACCOUNT YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES

Reviewing art and being negative is MOST of the time just pure assholery. Its fine to all feel good feelings and share them equally or whatever. Good feelings Negative feelings? Particularly music, has very overt and personal emotions, and if they are dark, or personal, even though it is live or online or at a gig, whatever, you cant really speak on that. outside of its pure musical aspects. You can, but thats pretty rich.

for brace- if u wake up in abject terror every day and have sleep issues - it could be a magnesium deficiency. other symptoms are restlessness, itchiness, stronger withdrawal symptoms compared w other people, sense of doom/dread, nightmares, heart palpitations, derealization, muscle cramps like TMJ. i know this is at odds w the message of the episode but sometimes it isn't in your head lol

leafnotcher

i started taking a mag supplement for constant heart palpitations after the covid vaccine- realized two months later that i felt normal for the first time in my life despite being under way more stress than usual. turns out i was malnourished bc of my poor person diet

absoluteboi

@ploob that is indeed what Liz and Brace were describing. and I agree that google goggle type shit is useless and a waste of resources just for tech bros to entertain themselves for a few minutes. but that *is* implementation. wearable tech doesnt have to be that. unfortunately, we live in a world where useful projects typically dont have a profit model and dont have a monopolistic ambition, so there's no funding to make them happen. but in theory, there could be useful wearable tech.

Natalie

what a mad ep. absolutely loved it

Laura Sullivan

Wow, great job. This episode hit home. One thing that makes the CPSD diagnosis challenging is when you are an addict(and poor). Doctors assume I have everything in the psychotic realm, and that progress is mostly made with antidepressants. I would prefer some time off work and some time alone, but what can ya do. Having therapists appear hopeless for my recovery feels, um, pretty not good.

Zach

great movie, maybe Haynes' only good movie apart from Superstar / perfect satire

What was the book on Rothko Brad mentioned? I’ve been in a Rothko obsession for a few weeks, that sounds like some good food to me

Super interesting ep, but as someone who works a a really physically demanding job I can say with certainty that pain is not always a figment of your psychological stress. And good posture definitely helps with back pain lol.

Great ep, I definitely hear the burden of carrying multiple diagnoses. I was diagnosed with Tourettes as a teenager so the current TikTok phenomenon is really strange to me; you often grow out of the disorder or it seriously lessens in severity with age. Even still, involuntarily ticcing and trying to suppress those tics in public is extremely frustrating, so I’m unsure why anyone would voluntarily want to feel like an achy marionette? I’ve had major depression/anxiety for years and had my first manic episode a few months into the pandemic after being laid off. It does feel so insurmountable to try and combat this nasty soup of poor mental health. Especially when looking for work, as you can’t be honest about gaps in your resume due to serious illness because prospective employers will then worry about whether or not you’ll be reliable. Unsure why I feel compelled to air this here, looking for anyone with similar experiences I suppose.

George Mitri

This is one of the best episodes I’ve ever heard, guys. That discussion of mental health that encompasses PTSD as a root of OCD, BPD, etc etc. and the matter of fact way you ground the maladies currently pathologized to the shit we hear and see every day is just sublime. Thank you.

Alison

Liz drop the mandelic peel rec

Thank u for this episode!!! People don’t know how to talk about mental health productively anymore. I work in inpatient mental health and often come across young people whose MH may not have diagnoses listed in the DSM but I’m sure that’ll change in coming years (not that diagnoses are everything but it’s definitely helpful to identify common patterns in human behavior). We live in a strange time

Hello I have a question about some content in this episode: what is meant by kubla khan?

Rory Blank

You talked a bit about declining critical reading skills, and that makes me want to bring up a particular supposition i have with regards to that subject, that doesn’t involve social media, which I think gets the brunt of attention. It’s No Child Left Behind. There hasn’t been a huge amount of focus on it, but what I have found seems to support this notion and I think it’s worth examining. The focus on teaching to tests, and those tests focusing on general comprehension, prioritizes being able to retain trivia about a story for a quiz over thinking about what meaning might be in the text beyond simple fact finding, and if you look at this wave of it in recent generations, including me, it has been rising the further we get into people from my cohort and younger, people who’ve had this specific kind of teaching, entering adulthood.

Matthew Floratos

Would you consider unlocking this episode? Have some folks I'd like to share it with (to state the obvious) for health reasons

Axel H.

This was a fascinating discussion, though I'd also be interested to hear some discussion of the intense societal rejection of the notion of psychosomatic/somatoform illness. To even suggest that physical symptoms might have a psychological cause, to many people, is akin to accusing the person experiencing the symptoms of faking for attention (i.e. Munchausen's) and denying the reality of their symptoms and dehumanizing them. Even very intelligent, critical thinking people I know, when they hear "psychosomatic" have an intense gut reaction against that label and regard it as nothing more than an insult. Why are we all so resistant to the notion, given all the rhetoric about taking mental health as seriously as physical health? I also think there should be a renewed interest in psychosomatic illness given the rise of long COVID, which, though there's still more research to be done, has all the hallmarks of an illness with psychological origins (e.g. vaguely defined symptoms like fatigue and brain fog--some studies indicate other mental health issues make one more likely to develop long COVID). Also, how does this relate to "Havana syndrome"? Havana syndrome almost sounds more like what's happening on TikTok, i.e. a kind of mass psychosis, another thing that's absolutely real but many people reject as nonsense.

Galen

A1 top malingerer here reporting for duty!

Great ep and I’m not even done listening. So many of my friends have developed TMJ after taking on stressful jobs and their doctors are doing everything but telling them to address stressors in their lives. Makes me crazy.

uya

I didn’t finish the episode so maybe this is addressed, but the one thing Ive never understood about this topic is how could you actually scientifically prove such a thing exists? My gut reaction personally is that you get diagnosed with things like this when medical science just can’t explain where your symptoms are coming from. Maybe it’s better understood than that but I can’t really see how it could be

i get this feeling to generalize medical knowledge to whatever weird problem u have. My life changed for instance when I started getting vitamin therapy, and I was basically convinced afterwards that basically everything was anybody I knew was dealing with medically or psychologically could be fixed by vitamin therapy / nutrition. And while I do think it’s extremely important and extremely for lack of a better word “underrated”, it’s insane to actually think that. in the same way it’s insane to think that cancer is manifested psychologically lol. You’re basically centering all of medicine around your own personal experience. I do appreciate them having on a medical “truther” though lmao. I think most doctors are pretty clueless and confidently so and imo our understanding of medicine at the moment, while obviously much better than it used to be, is still fairly “primitive”. The issue is that we like to think it isnt. and thats where the confident ignorance usually comes from.

uya

51:00 that’s probably what its like to have an eating disorder

Brendan Palangio

Yeah sorry, this episode is shit and I couldn't finish it. This guy's talking points on chronic pain being psychosomatic are exactly those of psychiatrists closely linked with the insurance industry (and bizarrely, living marxism) who starting in the 1980s worked to change the definitions of ME/CFS and then subsequently deny benefits and disability pensions to sick people despite a preponderance of biological evidence (those same psychiatrists are doing the same thing now with Long Covid). They're the same talking points used against women who had MS until the MRI was invented and whoops, yeah your nerves have no myelin sheath. It's the same argument made regarding peptic ulcers, which again, oops, are caused by bacteria. This entire psychosomatic angle really only started having a field day after psychiatry's crisis of faith in the 1970s and the field was looking for a new angle and hey it turns out that a lot of countries offer less disability support to psychiatric issues than to physical ones so in a happy accident all this just happens to align with the goals of austerity. So you bet your ass they're going to push it. https://web.archive.org/web/20060220170910im_/http://www.meactionuk.org.uk/UNUMProvident_Sharpe_and_CBT.htm https://web.archive.org/web/20050901004752im_/http://www.meactionuk.org.uk/Notes_on_the_Insurance_issue_in_ME.htm https://www.scottishlegal.com/articles/orthodoxy-on-trial-iv-so-long-psychogenia-but-not-quite-yet http://art-bin.com/art/dalen_en.html https://politicsandinsights.org/2016/11/29/rogue-company-unum-had-a-profiteering-hand-in-the-governments-work-health-and-disability-green-paper/ https://web.archive.org/web/20161206221809/https://www.cfsfacts.org/2012/11/unums-chronic-fatigue-syndrome.html

thanks for this, great ep. trauma responses, addictive thinking, running away from yourself, coping etc. are often really embarrassing for me to talk about, or even think about really. really helpful to hear some other people give voice to it.

Axel H.

For me the take away isn't that psychosomatic illnesses don't need to be treated, though.

Brendan Palangio

Imagine this: you are a child and one day you get sick, the doctors tell you it's all in your head and you're sent for psych evaluations, you take the pills (which years later are given a black box warning saying not to prescribe to children) and do the therapy willingly for years while every year your physical health degrades further. You are now in your early 30s and unable to work, it's finally realized that you have a neuroimmune disorder but there is no real treatment because for many years your condition was considered psychosomatic and no research was done, the waiting list to get into a treatment clinic for your disorder is three years. By noon on most days after you've showered and had a small meal you are so run down and exhausted you retire back to bed, you spend the majority of your hours in dark rooms unable to really move and in pain, you sometimes pass out standing up, you have not left the apartment in four years, you are denied disability because of the history of psychiatric care on your record, despite this you're pretty well adjusted "things could be worse". Some little dink on a website tells you "oh but we need to treat psychosomatic illnesses" do you tell him to chug diarrhea? In short: chug my diarrhea.

Axel H.

Lol. You can shove your hypothetical sob story up your asshole. And keep treating your chronic Lyme disease or your Havana syndrome or whatever made-up bullshit-of-the-day you think you have.

Gabriel Quintero

People have chronic conditions that are real, and conflating their illnesses or disabilities with Havana syndrome is tossing evidence-backed science down the drain with conspiracy. I don't think it's appropriate or in good faith, especially in light of just how many people are being impacted by long covid. There's a shitton of newly ill and disabled people having to navigate a world that's explicitly cruel and unforgiving to people that don't have access to any health resources. I've pretty much had to nurse back to health my partner over the course of 4 months from bedbound critical condition, to "normal" with exaggerated POTS and ME/CFS symptoms after a COVID infection, so I'm taking offense to blatant ableism. Like, what, do you just not have empathy for people's suffering, or are you some edgelord that dug their heels into a contrarian stance on medical science? Do you not get that universal healthcare and the expansion to access of knowledge, resources, and care is a goal of communism?

Axel H.

Maybe see a shrink about that diarrhea.

I've grown up with people (mostly internet folks starting with 2010s Tumblr) asking me my symptoms and telling me they think they have the same tumors as me despite the condition being extremely rare. It's extremely annoying and maybe I should have empathy for these folks if they are dealing with psychological issues, but I get sick of mostly strangers using me to diagnosis shop.

i think the difference is that while you're talking about 'PEOPLE' and as such making a broader 'point' (hence the now-very-familiar somewhat 'outrage' tone). Whereas the guest is just sort of offering the possibility that you could think like him, and it may work. It's pretty clear that he's not making a broad diagnosis...and just generally, people should be genuine, especially if that shows them to be 'bad' or 'wrong'. Then direct social opposition to them can actually occur. In the current Western social obfuscation, where people are afraid to make self-perspective, myopic statements, no issues can even be directly discussed without endless qualifying statements. It's clear that for all of us there are people that we do not like, and are in conflict with. If we all could be unafraid to sound 'rude', or stupid, just say it, then also receive the social feedback and think about it and react, that's probably as healthy as it gets.

Hey, it’s October 28th, Israel is genociding Gaza, almost seven months after this episode went up. I just listened to the Brett Ratner episode, the first of probably more. All of the sudden, this episode comes up on my headphones, like you put up another episode right after the Ratner episode, a bonus episode. I hear this and realize that I hadn’t heard this episode the first time because I would’ve remembered the Kiss bit (I saw them twice in the 1990s). It’s pretty mind opening, and not just because I’m stoned right now. I’m enturbulating whole episode, taking in the impact on reality this has, and why it took me seven months to hear this one. It makes me question reality.
