wife and i (not boomers) just had a 2 1/2 hour layover in miami, and by the time we got to the gate for our connecting flight, it was already mid boarding. and then we had to wait in the runway for 5 other planes to take off. I thought everything was supposed to be on a schedule, so idk how you get that kind of backup.. but needless to say i felt like a boomer the whole way from departure to destination talking about how shitty airports and airlines (i think the workers are fine, they seem to be trying but are severely understaffed and/or constrained) are specifically in the U.S.

Also do the airline episode. I have a personal interest in that I'm obsessed with trains so planes are my natural arch enemy. I barely fly (once every 2 to 3 years). This past year I had to fly twice to Phoenix from Seattle because my sister had a baby (Sept 22 when the baby was born and then the following Christmas of 22). Both times were absolute train wrecks. The first one is scheduled to connecting flights to close together so we went from Seattle to salt Lake and they gave themselves a 30 minute connecting time, The salt Lake to Phoenix flight took off without half its passengers from Seattle (So I'm just picturing them flying a basically empty plane from salt Lake for God knows what reason) And then there is a 12-hour layover for the next flight. It was a scene out of a movie because we weren't the only flight this had happened to so they didn't supply hotel vouchers. It was crazy, there were probably 60 people sleeping in the terminal, It was some weird adult summer camp. The Christmas situation was pretty well documented on the news as far as nationally the airlines were just fucked this past holiday season. Regardless flying sucks and we should have invested in train technology like Asia and Europe

Around 10 years ago I saw Mono live and they had a huge gong on stage (like 7ft diameter) that they only hit one time in the final encore, ever since I've been thinking about the logistics and expense of bringing that gong from Japan to Australia and how extremely worth it it was.

Re: flying. I used to do a podcast about billionaires and while researching our Warren Buffet episode we found that Berkshire Hathaway is heavily invested in multiple airlines (basically the 9/11 airlines plus a few), leading to an informal monopoly within the oligopoly.

Please do investigate why flying has gotten so terrible! And why the airline employees lie their asses off about what's going on and what they can do when there are problems. (They don't want to lose their jobs, of course - I'm not saying they're necessarily to blame - but why is lying policy?) I assume part of it increasing weather disruption due to global warming - but why aren't they accounting for that by planning/building in scheduling, staffing, and airport capacity buffers? Is it a categorical refusal to back away from just-in-time scheduling and rentier-capitalism-as-a-service more broadly, even as literal physics demands it?

My own recent flying woes had two cancellations - one for good reasons and the other for very stupid reasons. Flying from SFO to MKE with a layover in ATL, a storm in Georgia fucked my flight - but that's understandable and predictable (I predicted it by checking the weather forecast), and because I was anticipating the problem, I was able to change bookings to fly through MSP instead before even leaving for the airport in San Fran, as soon as the first delay showed up in the system, indicating problems (the flight was eventually cancelled outright). Oddly, the alternative flight through the Twin Cities was a better option all around - more direct, well-timed layover, and more convenient flight times - and I have no idea why it didn't show up as an option when booking in the first place, or in the online scheding system when I was looking up alternatives myself, but the actual human I talked to on the phone to re-book was very helpful. So I get to MSP, and everything seems to be going fine, but then five minutes before boarding is supposed to start, there's a mysterious announcement message telling everyone to sit tight while they verify the information. I have no idea what they're talking about, as there's no context - the only previous announcement was a 15 minute boarding heads-up. When we hit our scheduled boarding time, they announce that the flight is cancelled - because of weather, but not weather in Minneapolis nor Milwaukee, not bad weather along our flight path, but because a storm (which as I'll note again, is a PREDICTABLE problem) had shut down incoming flights to Detroit, and they needed to direct planes already in the air to surrounding airports to land. And apparently that completely overwhelmed MKE's capacity, despite at least half the gates never being in use any time I've flown, and these were all the last flights of the night, arriving after midnight, so a relatively low-volume period of the day and no need for IMMEDIATE turnaround to get planes out again on schedule. Why they couldn't park at the unused gates or even sit on the tarmac in line, since the flights were already not going WHERE they were scheduled, let alone when, in order to allow the scheduled flights to continue is beyond me - even without additional staffing, they could have opted for a backlog and delays deplaning as they handled the additional planes/passengers instead of just cancelling a bunch of flights. Anyway, they say they can't re-book anyone at the desk, which is an obvious lie, so I jump in line immediately because the plane at the next gate is boarding at the same time, going to Madison, which is easily in the range of calling in a favor from a friend for a ride home, or an expensive taxi ride if nobody responded. Thankfully, they could switch our flight from the desk despite claiming otherwise, there was a bunch of room left, and my friends are great. And I was mostly left wondering why my ass, who is not a logistics engineer nor airline professional, and who hasn't flown anywhere in fifteen years until this last year (so it's not like I have extensive passenger experience that gave me special insight), was seemingly able to do a better job identifying likely problems and solutions to them than the people whose literal job it is. Unlike you all, they did offer us vouchers in Minneapolis, which I was able to collect despite re-booking (because they just sent the link to the automated claim form to everyone on the flight) - so I treated my friend who drove us back from Madison to an overpriced dinner on the airline's dime the next evening.

I love the idea of a gong for Brace to compliment his 80 year old gay man aesthetic, love that arc for him. It's also obviously E-Pock. Like we are in a time of a new epoch. They pronounce it wrong(all words aren't names). While a show on air travel might be interesting I really don't think it would be more than "deregulation and profit motive bad." Fuel is expensive, and its capital intensive for a service that lasts a few hours, obviously they don't want to add cost by paying for your hotel. I think the train industry would probably be more interesting, or K Pop. In the vein of K Pop, also college sports.

100% on the airline episode. Had the same thing happen two years ago when trying to fly out of NYC. Took us 4 days, 3 cancelled flights, and a delay/missed layover to finally get home. No vouchers too because it was coded as weather, even though there was no bad weather at either airport. We try to avoid flying now :/

My guess is what's driving the current extremes of crapification and price gouging in air travel is a combination of: 1) The general trend in regulatory capture to the point that the now Sec. Transport openly has no interest in enforcement, efficiency or even the adequacy of transportation infrastructure to keep the rest of the economy functioning. 2) Covid taught the airlines to cancel flights that weren't full enough on short notice and rebook passengers. And we learned to accept this because it seemed better than not being able to fly at all. do the flying podcast, but also I think the thing is that every single thing, everywhere, across the board (at least in the US? and Canada? and the UK?) is getting the same squeeze treatment where both the workers and customers hate everything about what's going on, their personal experience, etc etc, but it doesn't matter because there's layers of fancy automation and Process and bullshit between the real profit-takers and everyone else. think of uber, for example, or food delivery, or food making, etc. anything that's truly corporate. and there's no Artisanal Airline for them to have to compete with so we just get pure shit.

Zero covid is the ideal policy for the pre-vaccine phase. After vaccines are available there must be a phased transition to re-opening. China (including HK) failed to shift gears, where Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand handled that transition well. Keeping to covid zero despite vaccines being available was harmful to overall population health

I’m from Ohio so I’m somewhat by default a cavs fan so of course I’m biased lol. They’re a great team. Their peak era of bandwagon fame you’re referring to was unbearable. But Draymond is just objectively an incredibly dirty player. That being said I’m pretty much pro fighting in sports so I’m not pearl clutching I just thinking acting like he’s not dirty is ridiculous. Draymond lost the benefit of the doubt a long time ago. And yeah that Kawhi injury was a crime against humanity.

China handled zero COVID just about perfectly, used the omicron virus to test out reopening in select areas, waited for appropriate vaccine coverage and then absolutely embarrassed the world with the hattrick reopening phase.
