We settle a score with our greatest enemy yet: the airline industry. We aim the furious gun of knowledge at the airplane and demand that it reroutes to a place no airline has ever flown: The Truth.

Speaking of airplanes they should bring back the JRA

Dr. No No No

Putting objects on my person to get a cavity search on purpose

Go'Thrak

Brace and Liz actually did the Tommy Boy fake flight attendant thing to research the episode. Young Chomsky did enough 3-way shoulder raises to achieve liftoff.

Bill Evans

Yes!!! Been looking forward to this one for months!

meow

this episode pairs great with the Behind the Bastards series on Frank Lorenzo

Why would throuple be pronounced "throople"? lol

John Swan

The movie Liz is thinking about: “Non-Stop” (2014) starring Liam Neeson.

lock

Wow i am sitting in heathrow having gotten fucked by the airline for the past twelve hours and I’m so, SO delighted to see this drop into my lap. Bless you all.

absoluteboi

last time i checked, like a month ago, 2023 cancellations had surpassed the 100,000 mark by june putting it on pace for over 200k cancellations for the year. and the other two years that reached that mark were 2001 and 2020.

D

Hell yeah I am calling in sick to work today for this.

Dick Waglin

I can tell you as a 6'3" individual flying is pretty uncomfortable

Doug Cartel

I would 1000% hit a gong right when the plot twist happens in a movie or a scene change in Oppenheimer

JUDGE MOVIES

i have been waiting for this episode because i hate nothing more than flying. it’s like paying to go to prison for a day

absoluteboi

in europe if a flight is delayed by more than 3 hours by EU law they have to offer you a refund

Nicholas Kos

Why all the hate against Richard Wolff???

buttface

Hell yeah been waiting for this one

Nico

Having just come off a 26-hour, 3-flight intercontinental marathon, this episode is what I needed.

absoluteboi

and in addition to better regulators, european airlines also have to compete with commuter rail services. which are actually a viable mode of reliable long distance travel because their versions of Amtrak actually own and operate their own tracks and not merely rent them out from freight railroad cartels that simply park their trains in the way and refuse to move.

Demented Avenger

I got stuck in the Buffalo airport for 8 hours back in 2000. The single most boring place ever conceived.

Vegas airport is actually pretty good (at least by airport standards). That being said, the quality dramatically falls to nearly to that of LAX during big conventions 😒

Welcome back Racial Jake

Jack

this episode was absolutely ELECTRIC guys! One of your best ones ever.

Jack

most magical flying I've ever had was a $48 flight from Philly to cincy on FRONTIER airlines. lucked out with 5th row seat, got a bloody Mary and landed early.

Claire Simon

Last time I flew I was in boarding group X

Cody S

I was waiting for this one!

sir peepus

the same reason you pronounce ozempic with a B

sir peepus

Lol Brace said “wegular”. ABDL ep when??

Doug Cartel

really the only people getting even a remotely pleasurable flying experience are the psychos bouncing cocaine and sex slaves across the planet through CIA cutouts OH ALSO it's called a Throuple because the person in the middle is the medium for back-and-forth emotional exchange the "Through-pal", so to speak jk

Kryn Benski

The ground sitter is king

Jonica Stewart

I love this. I am an union organizer and I've been organizing airports for almost a year now. It's really bad, especially what Delta is doing and has been doing.

Nico

It's because Racial Jake can't compete with Sensual Richard Wolff and he knows it.

Demented Avenger

Why not Nader? Love the guy but he never shuts up about the damn airlines.

Kenny Allums

I never considered operating my bull dozer on an airplane until now

SF

When you guys do scripted cold opens they’re always so good— this one reminded me of the one at the beginning of the dog-fucker two-parter

Danny

Used to work across the street from the Oregon Theater, Portlands former premier porno theater. Had amazing people watching. Some of my coworkers took a tour and apparently they were having a party with a full Safeway snack tray spread. Then it was shut down and I think someone briefly cooked drugs in it. Just reopened as a trendy bar. The cycle of life.

I am become reply guy

Brace you’re 33 it’s time to start thinking about your crucifixion

Connor

One thing missed about the pilot shortage is, on top of the shitty pay when you have no seniority, is just how fucking expensive it is to get your pilot ratings in order to become employable by an airline. Tens of thousands (if not more depending on where you go to school) just to face years and years of shit pay and shit schedules.

AfroCommie

You actually did this episode ... I got an AA flight booked back home to Curaçao from London for Christmas. This ep is not gonna make me look forward to it ...

Natalie

i'm good on a plane bc i can shove all my belongings into one backpack and just sit in any seat (it's the same as any other seat, just a place for your butt!) and disassociate till i get out like i'm ron desantis. brace, you should definitely get some sort of new credit card. rewards ooOoOoHhhHh but you travel a lot so it's probably worth it to upgrade. i look forward to dragging mayor pete across the coals for his time as the SoT next time he tries to weasel his little rat self into the oval office

Isaac Kalish

Deleted earlier (more spectrum) comments, but i'm still gonna be pretty effusive here. This ep delivered on the promise, well done. I truly enjoyed Liz's breakdown of the miles racket. I wasted enormous amounts of time while marginally employed figuring out how to churn and manufacture spend on cards get these premium experiences and even if you get actually good, like a card counter, it is still a 'house always wins' situation. You are constantly outrunning devaluation, account shutdowns, and diminished availability. Most are paying fees for no reason because the industry makes the points deliberately hard and confusing to use call it "breakage". Absolute racket.

Kyle Petty

Full disclosure. I'm a trains guy. Fucking love trains and want to go to Asia and Europe specifically so I can ride the trains they have. Was in this asinine conversation with a relative about how planes suck for many reasons, But one specifically; It creates a somewhat essential service that only certain groups of people can access on a regular basis. This relatives response, "Well yeah they have to make planes expensive because if everybody could afford it, Then that would be putting too much strain on the environment." This is the goddamn logic by neoliberals. By then making certain services or luxuries extremely expensive and out of reach for the rest of us, They are actually doing the morally good and right thing for all of us. I've even heard this applied to houses. Something like, "Well yeah there's too many of us now, If every millennial had a house then it would use too many resources and things would be too spread out." It's never about actually addressing the problem at the root. In the case of planes, The solution is to just get rid of them and build an extensive train network. It's cheaper for the consumer, easier on the environment, and arguably a more comfortable experience.

Felix

I think everyone would be happier if we brought back smoking on planes

Dino Zaccagna

They could do an episode about literally anything and it will be entertaining.

Jake the Human

this was a great first episode for people who subscribed to the patreon despite knowing nothing about the pod

lopez

that gay porn theater in downtown portland was still in operation when i lived there in 2004. I walked past it all the time on my way to my dorm at portland state. i almost bought a ticket to go in so many times but always chickened out. it closed down like 6 months after i moved there. shoulda had the guts and gone in.

Julie D

This is the second time recently that they've done unintentional companion eps

Robert Sayre

well, this is all true. but don't fly to JFK!

Micheline

I’m sorry but Liz is dead ass wrong about the pronunciation of throuple

Ty Baron

Why y'all hating on Richard Wolf?

ZeeBee

I've got JetBlue mosaic status. Can I get in that blowjob bodega?

dominic

It’s a portmanteau of couple and three!!!!!! Thrupple!!!!!!

Jimothy Realname

i heard somebody had bloody diarrhea - or actually, that doesn't do it justice. someone had a butt hemorrhage with poop mixed in on an air france flight, and it went like 2-3 flights without being cleaned up. a guy noticed the floor was wet and smelled terrible when he was down there checking on his kitties. And that's the way it is

John H

It shouldn't be pronounced at all, because the words "triad" and "trio" existed already, so we didn't need a portmanteau of a word for twosome AND a word for three to mean "threesome" (a word that also already existed).

syd

I went from Portland, ME to NYC via Amtrak once and it was so wonderful, it was the least stressful trip I've ever been on. Not having to drive or deal with airports is amazing and I hate how often it isn't applicable/affordable in this stupid, stupid car-centric country.

Sara S

Liz and Brace - thank you for doing this episode. I’ve traveled by plane since the 1970s and the last decade I’ve had this creeping feeling that it is all wrong. I loved how you put it together. But what can we do other than become billionaires and fly our own planes destroying the environment?

Sara S

Yes!!!

Madison Perry

I liked it when Racial Jake said “econometrics”

Charlotte Ring

Great ep!! Wanted to bring up that new Clear service it’s so weird! Totally private company who’s only job at the moment is to personally escort each user to the front of the regular line and let them cut everyone else! Serves no other purpose at present (I think the biometric aspect is planned but not fully functional). But pro tip they don’t actually have a right to cut! So if they ever try to make someone cut you in line stand your ground! Fuck that dumbass business

Ian P

What is the picture in the episode art?

Go'Thrak

The twilight zone where shatner sees the man on the wing.

Ian P

Thank you!

Char Kelly

if the gumshoes can make the airplane episode happen, then we MUST petition to get Liz real bongos

Sean Carton

A good TSA protest would be for everyone to start packing humongous, lubed-up dildos in their carry-ons, dildos big enough that they’d have to be wrapped in at least 2 gallon-sized freezer bags.

Kyle Petty

Oh damn I got excited when I saw the notification because I'm in Seattle. Thought a fellow PNW native felt my dismay at the train game up here. Yeah I suppose I should have clarified that the East Coast has a pretty great train network if I'm not mistaken. Only went to DC once when I was in 5th grade, So I admittedly don't know but I've just heard that it's a lot easier to get around or at least they Didn't tear up their train infrastructure like Seattle did in the first half of the 20th century.

Brian Rad

When are we getting more info on the artifact?

Kamran Husain

brace i may have to challenge you for biggest enemy of the tsa but they fucking started it

Jed Levin

They charge more for aisle seats now? What is this, Fortnite? F that!

Kerri

Oh hell yeah

Jonah Lindblad

complain about plugs dont work on plane = free business class

Kennsy

I was surprised that I didn’t hear about the premiumization of all premiumizations: the ultra rich and the boom of chartering private jets… but great job! Next time my Lab Rat brain gets excited at the prospect of a rewards program and gaming the system I’ll second guess it

kctoo

There's a lot of research on the relationship between inequality and symbolic/status consumption. The higher the inequality index of a population, the higher the status consumption of lower income individuals, with a positive correlation towards willingness to go into debt to do it. It's tragically funny to think that as execs pocket dozen million dollar bonuses, their email wranglers go into debt to fly business class because they'll never be able to afford a down payment anyways 🙃

Louie Van Patten

Support the flight attendants, the rest I can take or leave - -but a specific fuck you to those ignorant TSA shitheads at Indianapolis Airport.

DrawingPen

I don’t know why related - but can you guys do a ep about Hermes?

Phil Rhym

Whelp… thank you for this. I’m done paying for the minor benefits you get on flights. I’ll be paying the least amount for the “on the wing seats” when we get there

Charlie Gonzo

Cinéma L'Amour in Montréal is still going strong – google it.

Florp Dickums

I can't let brace slander garbage plates, there's so much more than some burger and beans

Alejandro Pepsi

You should do a bus episode next. Are they really pregnant tractor-trailers?

dam

Next episode is 311...looking forward to a very rap/rock/reggae episode! The bongos came just in time!

jsobrie

Hartford, CT still has a porno theater

Couch

I'm going to track Brace down and force him to eat a garbage plate

Randy Hendrickson

I think we all know where this stems from. Debooonked.

Scout Burns

How is this somehow possibly the most unhinged episode yet

Doc Adna

Queue Eric Andre's weird shirtless guest guy: "investigate 311"

Doc Adna

Interesting, could you share some of the names of the research articles? Want to sniff through that

kctoo

Yeah check out these and papers that cite them on Scholar: - "Conspicuous consumption and income inequality in an emerging economy: evidence from India" by Jaikumar et al. - "Keeping up with the Joneses: Analyzing the effect of income inequality on consumer borrowing" by Christen et al. - "Income inequality and status anxiety" by Paskov et al. - "Positional goods and the social rank hypothesis: Income inequality affects online chatter about high‐and low‐status brands on Twitter" by Walasek et al.

Jed Levin

My in-laws live in Tucson - ha-ha! First airline loyalty plan that’s ever worked for me. Great episode; I don’t think it was a stretch for TrueAnon.

Tan Tan

guys “Throuple” is a combination of the words “Three” and “Couple” and unless i’ve been pronouncing couple wrong my whole life it makes no sense that the word would be pronounced “throoople”

Emma

Brace you should get a real credit card. If nobody is earning miles on touring travel you're fucking up

Emma

I knew a guy once who made over 50% of his income by scamming airline miles points and converting them into other loyalty programmes...in the UK you can buy groceries, anything on eBay, all kinds of shit with airline miles.

Jess

TikTokers beware, the very luxe first class seats are being phased out because at that level, it's easier to just buy time on a private jet. The future is large business cabins and barebones economy that I shit you not is being tested in the Philippines because "they're small."

brodie

I flew for the first time in the past few weeks and the whole time I was like wow this really sucks, and the whole time my dad was telling me about how this is actually going great and was probably the smoothest he has ever gotten through everything. So like the best way it can go is still sucks

weedworf

I’m excited for y’all to continue purchasing auxiliary percussion for the podcast; I can wait for you to have a music departments worth of percussion devices in the pod studio. Do u think you will get a marimba next or a triangle?

weedworf

Eventually there is gonna be a professional timpanist as third mic and I am here for it

shampooflasks

damn, liz got the mikey miles limited addition bongos

Ryan

shouts out to DogTown best plate in rochester

stephen hartnett

Ok you got the garbage plate all wrong, first of all, Nick Tahou’s is the trademark owner and they are CRAZY. It’s a concealed carry encouraged type establishment, but I digress. A true Rochester “plate” ,as most places refer to them, is two cheeseburgers, patty and cheese only, a big ass scoop of cold macaroni salad, a healthy dollop of fried potatoes, raw onions and mustard, then another dollop of meat hot. This combination must be consumed with plastic cutlery from within a styrofoam clamshell takeout box. It is our only culture so put some respect on it!

mexicanhalloween .

I used your promo code and now I'm a member of the exclusive no-fly list

K H

Greater than sum of the parts.

K H

Yes. Lock eyes with the burliest flight attendant in the gate area and they'll take you. It's best after the flight to make sure your ears pop. Works better than gum.

Rob Soltis

You randomly mentioned Indy cars.. have Yinz considered doing something on formula one? It’s always been used as a way to launder money for sketchy countries and people.

K H

This has absolutely ZERO to do with adult baby diaper lovers.

K H

This was a long episode to basically only learn Liz needs a xylophone. The airline industry is a good example of all the flaws of capitalism. For instance, no one is around because each airline runs with minimum possible staffing and equipment. That means if a lot of flights are delayed out of JFK there will be almost no one to call in for an emergency and no other aircraft. Everyone available is working, every plane available is flying. Everyone/thing not hurtling through the air to the next point of pain and disappointment is on break/maintenance. Even people that want to help you can't, because the inertia of the system is such that no individual decision can be determinant of outcome. You landed early? Great, you can wait in the plane on the ground because every gate is full and if they aren't all the people that park the aircraft are busy working another plane. Oh you parked at the gate early? Good job- psyche fuck you there is no gate agent to attach the jetway and let you leave idiot. Each airline races the others to the bottom, and this might slow somewhat because of credit card revenue which is the kind of money printing crypto probably aspired to be without knowing it. Ultimately every strategem is duplicated and reflected for the purpose, not of making money, but serving shareholders. To include hitting arbitrary metrics correlated to growth and customer satisfaction, as opposed to actually pursuing those things. Which is why you might be left at the gate while the plane is sitting there, so it can leave to within the minute of on time and achieve the metric of satisfaction rather than delivering the thing itself. Because most of all the system deranges the people that use it even as it debases and denigrates them. To do good is to take willful action. To take willful action is to resist the overwhelming inertia of the system towards entropy and to impose human design over the emergent structures produced by the environment defined by the system. More often than not, doing good means slowing down. The one thing which capitalism does not, can not do is slow down. True horror has no secret and that is what drives people mad.

K H

Average TSA agent is fine. The TSA overseer only gets that job by being a horrible person.

K H

I think if we just fucked up the dudes that own railroads we could get some pretty worthwhile changes. Like get them drunk and have a goofy good time with them so they change their ways I mean.

K H

Hoes? Stewardess? Area codes?Liz needs to respect women. Re👏spect 👏women. Also pilots are all paid well now, as of like last year. The training is way more expensive though. It is true you can't drink anymore. Also Qatar is a great airline. Probably won't get bombed because of relationships, I think they are cool with Saudi mostly again. Really first class business class too.

K H

If you lean your seat back you are a terrorist.

JV

This being some bizarre unusual normie episode is funny in the context of e.g. the Sarah Squirm one a few weeks ago

Anon Ibid

Crowley is pronounced like holy

Maya Sarder

Best way to get hours as a pilot is to work for a local skydiving dropzone fyi

Brian Long

Delta has it out for all of us

Brian Long

Clear is absolutely insane to me

Brian Long

9/11 changed everything

HL

Bro I was coming back from a study abroad semester and they lost my bag with all my family’s Christmas presents in it. They paid me for the lost stuff and it randomly showed up like 6 months later

Andrew

Brace’s “a club!? With me, as a member? I would be thrilled!!” Might as well be a mr peanut butter clip from bojack

Barnabas

Allegedly if you freeze your credit card before a flight, use it to pay for internet, and then unfreeze it afterwards, you won't get charged for the internet

Allison

it’s not one of my most logical viewpoints so i am thrilled to hear brace agree that no one should recline on airplanes!!

kat

listening as i prepare to go to the airport again today after a missed flight yesterday that has thrown my life into turmoil. hoping this brings me good luck 😭

Jaime Christley

*Seinfeld voice* whyyy don’t they build the whole terminal out of the lounge?

Court Hansen

Listening to this while in the middle of a 40 hour travel day(s) from Cambodia back to the US and now I’m worried that all my luggage will be gone when I get home. Thanks Brace and Liz!

Jaime Christley

Talk about putting the nut in The Nutmeg State, am I right?

Ash

I just got a seemingly staged tiktok on my for you page of a pilot addressing the passengers. First he complained, “this has been my life for the past month” and then asked if any of them want to become an air traffic controller lmao.

Jaime Christley

Liam Neeson in AIR FORCE ONE Kurt Russell in CON AIR I'm firmly convinced that Liz and Brace inhabit the Last Action Hero universe where like Mel Gibson starred in Die Hard

Amy Schully

Still in the intro and I feel like I’m tripping

DarylBarenziah

I love how the most “normie” episode is actually an explanation to the gulag sentencing that these airline billionaire corpo shit bags get before they go 3d print kitty litter for the nationalized brand pet co labor camp.

Margaret Nersten

I don’t fly much so not sure if this is already common but something I noticed recently in Philly was that they now let you just take alcoholic beverages “to go” instead of only being served within restaurants. Seems like a good way to increase the likelihood that neighbors waiting in the terminals hate each other more / feel more motivated to pay for separate seating

seth

buffalonian here -- flight 3407 was basically my 9/11

Gray Taylor

I am a pilot and that flight also drastically changed my life by radically changing the requirements necessary to become a pilot, from less than 500 to 1500

K H

That would honestly be a pretty good episode I bet. Did they already do one on fūtbol?

K H

Abhorrent and disgusting as all true culture should be.

K H

Idk how lux we are talking because renting a private jet transoceanic is expensive af. Like you could probably buy a condo instead.

K H

Yes...for protest...

K H

Weird. Yea I always wondered what their deal was. A few times they have pulled some bullshit about cutting through their little ropes, and I'm like, are you guys security? What is your authority exactly? Leave me alone. I know they are just doing their job to avoid being fired but my god. Just more worthless bullshit when they could pay those people to stay home and it would be more productive. Sorry to any Clear workers I offended by my actions, but also back off, but I am sorry, but don't.

K H

Not much because of TSA and all the tracking of industrial fertilizer.

syd

God that sucks so much. WE DESERVE A COMPREHENSIVE, AFFORDABLE RAIL NETWORK INTENDED FOR PUBLIC TRANSIT. I hate every single argument against it. Also we deserve HSR

original gay pussy eatah

I went on a vacation recently and had to pass through security five times. I have an X for my gender marker on my drivers license. For warm weather I was able to wear gym shorts/bike shorts, and a crop top, tank top, and sandals. I was stopped for an enhanced screening every single time, despite no other travel red flags. These usually focused around patting me down or inspecting my person, which was mostly already visible for inspection because of the light summer wardrobe. I’m every instance my partner and my child were encouraged repeatedly to go on through without me. Thankfully they never did. Fucking nightmare!

Frenchterry

Rochester mentioned 😭

Junior Carmichael

You are guys are way too good at "NPR voice." My own experience with flying the last couple of years is planes always having unspecified mechanical or electrical issues making the flight delayed or canceled. I have spent more time in O'Hare than anyone should in their life.

wolfgang

“Just drive there”… Automotive is doing the same upmarket shell game. during the pandemic chip shortage car makers focused production on higher end modeled bc the profit margins are larger. they found that people bought what was available no matter the cost. now automakers are cutting ‘entry level’ modeled and trims, the average car is +40k and the sub 20k market is essentially done. I think these trends perfectly reflect incomes inequality 👍 the free market is efficient.

wolfgang

duuude, I was just thinking how brace sometimes sounds like george costanza.

Lux Manifestus

I am wondering what the Hawaiian music was, playing at the beginning of this episode. I love that era and genre of music. I am always delighted to find good examples of it. Unfortunately, Shazam was unable to help me determine it (can you believe it?)! What, pray tell, was that beautiful music??

Jaime Christley

Makanani Kaupo by All-Star Hawaiian Band

Emioly

Saved this listen for my flight today so just know im lurking around the Denver airport looking very cool and mysterious listening to this ep

saaffie

Great episode! Reid was in Paris- I actually remember seeing them control his stuff - he was really tall.and I remember thinking it was racial profiling. He was supposed to be going to Florida I think bit they stopped in Boston which was my destination. In the middle of our flight this huge "flight attendant" started to closely e sure we were all ok. Upon arriving in Boston we were controlled getting OFF the plane for our passports. I thought, I guess this is the post 9-11 world. Before going through passport control I went to the WC and some Spanish speaking girls told me they were still stuck there and had been there for hours. I didn't really understand what the or their problem was. It wasn't until I left baggage claim to find my sister that my dad called to tell us what was going on at the airport. Really incredible.

Shiv

Brace being ready to yes/and yams 🍠 in the sky was a stellar example of cohosting

Vita Eve

the name of this is eerily similar to the name of a certain church magazine. brace is definitely an armstrongite.

Houthi & the Blowfish

Reminds me of when I was in a relationship with a girl who's mother was a flight attendant for delta. We could fly on reserve AKA for free but you had to wait till the end of the flight to make sure every seat was filled and if not then you were able to get on so you never knew if you were going to be able to get somewhere so we would just Jet Set around to different airports hoping we will get a new seat

Mary Jordan

So glad to hear Liz defend food. Wonder how she feels about litter box cakes

Lawson

I'd actually recommend TSA precheck. It's only like $250 for 4 years and it saves a solid hour of time at any major airport.

fiadh

its a categorical imperative tbh

Liam

Getting on a plane and listening to this today. Like I do every single time I get on a plane

Ian :3

Re-listening before my flight in my official TrueAnon shirt

Paul Brewer

When Brace went back in time I thought he was going to shout ‘No! Not Barabbas!’
