About the morality of film, we have to remember that so many people are entirely ignorant about events themselves, so worrying about the perfect moral framing is missing the point that we actually just need films so people can learn that we nuked a couple cities. How many people knew that before going in, vs when they walked out? I'd imagine around 50% of the audience didn't even know the realities of those bombings. That's the real role of cinema now. If we want more depth, we gotta sub to TA and buy books.

from what I've been told, the Wagner freaks called off their 'protest march' the instant Putin went on TV and accused them of betrayal. I don't think it helped that no other high ranking officials backed up Prigozhin and that anybody with a modicum of power lined up behind Putin. The self-driving car point I couldn't agree more with. I don't know why the self-driving car is being pushed so hard when we already have that same experience in trains. I guess someone could argue that a self-driving car is like your own personal train, that will take you directly to where you want to go, but if we just build out train systems then it would be the same experience. It's not like self-driving cars can negate traffic, pedestrians, construction, crappy roads, car repairs, gas, etc. Yet, a train system does circumvent all of those occurrences.

Self driving cars could potentially prevent a lot of accidents. Like everything else in our world though, it’s being done in a very stupid way and rushed to market before it’s ready. Obviously public transit would be a better solution but that’s never happening so in the meantime, it would be nice if I didn’t have to pay attention in traffic. Unfortunately, our entire economy is focused on short-term growth over building an actual product and I don’t know if we’ll ever actually get a real self driving car that doesn’t suck

One metric that the "economy is actually good" crowd usually ignores is life expectancy. Along with the experience of inflation, knowing of a lot more people who died is going to have a big effect on how you view quality of life and the economy, even if more people have jobs.

Interesting point Yum Chomsky made about Michael Haneke, however I though he would point out that if you watch any Haneke film you will never hear a score(non-diegetic music) because he has the same criticism as Brace; the hollywood score is manipulative and corners the viewer into feeling a certain way about what’s on screen instead of letting the film itself do that work.

But the whole point of a movie is to take a viewer on a journey, and tell a story, why would the score be a tool best left in the tool box of the director and artists trying to tell an emotionally compelling story? If a director said " I'm not going to have visuals, just dialog, just a swirling kaleidoscope on screen, and a score" then we'd think they were crazy. The whole point of a movie is to communicate a certain "feeling" and tell a story, and if you don't like that... maybe don't watch movies

it's a good movie, they're dead wrong about it. They don't think a movie that features a bunch of hollering Americans cheering on the detonation of a nuke, while the protagonist envisions himself stepping through a charred corpse, in an auditorium that hey come to think of it is kinda like a movie theater, isn't critical of 1) that protagonist and 2) the audience watching the film. Nolan isn't contemptuous of his audience though, unlike like Haneke, so maybe he should have been more didactic and unbearable to get the point across good ep otherwise :]

self driving car take: I'm a pedestrian in SF (no car - I walk, bike, scooter, or lyft everywhere). when I'm biking to Caltrain there's an intersection at 7th and Townsend that I almost get merked every morning. self driving cars are the only cars who ALWAYS see & wait for bikers and pedestrians. they're the only cars I trust to not kill pedestrians. I've never ridden in one so I have no take on that aspect. I also don't work in tech so I have no tech-y bias. trust me I distrusted them too (Waymo and Cruise anyway**)

People think the economy is bad bc housing and transportation costs are so high, the solution is to build denser housing and more public transportation. Will lower the cost of housing for everyone, provide an alternative to car ownership for low income people who spend a ridiculous amount of their paychecks on transportation

Well this was trying to explain the phenomenon Liz discussed in the episode - if all the conventional data (unemployment, wages, GDP, etc) is signaling that the economy is strong and getting stronger… why do we have an ever growing population of homeless people; and why does everyone seem to share the belief that their paychecks are being eaten away and money isn’t going as far as it used to. We can point to inflation as an explanation… but again conventional data is telling us that inflation isn’t actually that bad, and hasn’t been for several months now. Therefore it is my belief that the reason why the economy FEELS so bad is bc of housing and transportation costs, which if you have been paying attention you would have noticed have risen faster than any other essential cost like food/groceries. And it should always be noted that the government has more control over housing and transportation costs than any other!! We can build housing and public transportation, and should, where there is a shortage of those things.
