We begin our multi-part series on the legends and myths swirling around the POW/MIAs allegedly left behind in Indochina with an explanation of how we got there in the first place: The Vietnam war, the Golden Triangle, secret bombings, aerial campaigns, army wives, and Ross Perot.

This podcast references a lot of books, it would be cool if you put a list together of the books you recommend throughout the episodes. I don’t want to put any pressure on you guys but I pay for this subscription instead of paying my child support. It’s the least you can do.

Alex

Omg please have Alfred Mccoy on the show! 🙏

NYCM&AHole

What about the soldiers who never came home because they became trophies for the predator?

Clarp Blarpkiss

I used to go on road trips all the time to visit family when I was young, and I always assumed Pow Mia was so e sort of Che Guavara-type figure that only people who ran truck stops knew about.

Corey Reynolds

I got COVID recently. Sucked. Probably be wearin your masks and getting your vaxxx update. Throat kept swelling up and I was briefly worried I'd get owned and have to go to the hospital, despite easily defeating it on at least one other occassion. Be careful unless you smoke really hella strong weed in which case you are protected based on a tiktok I saw of Joe Biden.

Mitch

Not to give advice to these people, but they could go with God(s), guns and Grites. It's a little more inclusive and flows better.

Michael S. Judge

My 8th grade teacher was an army reservist, and he had all these military and historical tchotchkes all over his desk that we could "win" if we got the best score on a test or something. One time I won and took the POW/MIA flag, not knowing anything about it as a phenomenon, and he was confused and asked why I wanted that, so I said, "Well if there are all these POWs and MIAs, this flag should probably be somewhere people can see it." I didn't understand why he got mad

Broadway Joe

Stars and bars. The War of Northern Agression… I didn’t realize this was a neo-Confederate podcast.

Gordon Schmidt

In the Invisible Bridge, Rick Perlstein recounts a story where POW wives approached the North Vietnamese delegation at the Paris Peace Talks, demanding the release of their husbands. These were hardcore Vietnamese cadres, they'd survived decades of war and party intrigue. Not the sort of people to be trifled with, in other words. Seething, they told the wives that their husbands were being punished for crimes against the Vietnamese people. Apparently, the wives were absolutely shaken. Can you imagine walking in that self-righteously, only to be met by people who have experienced things you cannot imagine? Also interesting that WWII had so many more unrecoverable bodies than Korea or Vietnam. That's probably because of the Pacific War- when a ship sinks, it can be very hard to recover the bodies, even if they know where the wreck is. They're still finding wrecks from the 1940s today.

Pte. Parts

The POW/MIA flag does legit look just like the ISIS flag

Broadway Joe

When I was about 7 I asked my dad—who was about as apolitical as they come—who his favorite president was. He answered, “Richard Nixon because he brought the troops home from Vietnam.”

Brian Ward

I sense an impending long COVID arc

nadia

I remember being a child at a basketball game and noticing that flag for the first time… always something deeply unsettling about it. The stark black and white combined with that big ass silhouetted head… bonechilling

nadia

Knew you would come through with the George Stephen Morrison Gulf of Tonkin connection 🤝🏻

Petrorenminbi

Am i crazy or is stars and bars the confederate flag

Evan Scott

They didn't get the flags mixed up this is actually broadcast from an alternate reality where the confederacy won the war

Shiv

Brace does your funky ass really hauve coivid?! avoid vigorous activity long after you start to feel better. maximum resting correlated w better outcomes. if you drop dead we’ll have to accuse the CIA and no one wants that

Petrorenminbi

It’s so crazy you could not support the war, get drafted in the war, go “missing” in the war, then finally have your wife used as a political pawn to slow roll peace talks to end the war. Hell of a life

Shiv

Me Talk Pretty Someday is too NPR-core for BB

Phillip Harris

My brother and I argued about Nixon vs Humphrey. My brother said Nixon had a “secret plan’. I liked Humphrey because his name was fun to say. I was 3. My brother was 5.

Seth Aronovich

So, I'm mostly onboard with this. But, to suggest that Nixon was somehow any worse than LBJ, who worked with the zionist entity to orchestrate the murder of Kennedy for trying to stop their nuclear program, and who got dozens of good draft-dodgers on the USS Liberty killed as part of a plot to nuke Egypt and Syria, is problematic to me. I also think it's quite possible that the heroic Communist government of the Vietnamese people passed some American POW's over to the USSR to extract their information and some of them may have been tortured to death in the process. Fine by me, entirely justified. Every American babykiller sent to Vietnam had the opportunity to frag their officers, those that didn't deserve no sympathy. EDIT: Also, while 'POW/MIA' has technically been used to 'justify' continuing American aggression against Vietnam, well into the 1990s and beyond, the same aggression has continued to happen to Cuba and China and Venezuela and Iran and other human countries that stood up against alien aggression under succesive evil American regimes like the Biden and Trump crime families, despite the fact that they hold no Ammurrican prisoners. Vietnam would have been attacked regardless of the POW/MIA narrative. The American empire is incapable of truth or humanity or reason or morality.

Claire Simon

Do you think the POW MIA shadow guy and the Neighborhood Watch shadow guy ever explored each others bodies

Connor Green

I came to Bo Gritz via Gary Webb’s Dark Alliance, wanted more, happy to hear this

The French ate shit so badly in Indochina their north African conscripts realized their commanders were trash and were inspired to go home and start their own revolutions.

Brian Long

I went most of my life not knowing what that flag was until like, 6 years ago when I looked it up and was like, k.

Great episode! Everytime I see that flag I grind my teeth. Appreciate the nod to us oldies, though I'm not Bob Dole old yet. Braceman, get better soon and stop catching that shit.
