We love our PoWs, don't we, folks?

Buried Ledes

That Stallone yell sounds like Bobcat Goldthwait.

Rambo: Last Blood is what my gyno calls perimenopause

Graham Hoese

weedworf

Braces weird collage of impressions here sounds like Charlie from it’s always sunny impersonating Pacino

Oliver Crane

BOB DYLAN: "Talk about the greats, Sylvester Stallone is from here. If you haven't seen his latest movie, you got to go see it. It's called the Last something. Last Blood, that's right! I'm telling you, it should've won an Academy Award, but of course it didn't. Maybe next time"

Dinosaur

The term for that guy is "Simp"

Alex C

I don't have his number, unfortunately

Michael S. Judge

I've got Stallone on lock if this need should ever emerge again

Demented Avenger

The National League had a good run in the 1980s, avoiding the DH rule, winning 6 of 10 All-Star Games, and half the World Series. It would have won the 1985 World Series had Don Denkinger not blown that call. Wha?

NYCM&AHole

Rambo IV was totally brutal like an Austrian death machine album.

Hugo

Good episode but brace blaming the Soviets for the sino Soviet split…get outa here

Doug Cartel

"when you visit cambodia...you will never stop wanting to beat Henry Kissinger to death with your bare hands" - Anthony Bourdain

Karl Childers

i can't tell if brace pronouncing it "ma-jew-hideen" is intentional or not

Mark Owen

DRI Crossover - the album where they got bipartisan support for POW/MIA flags at post offices

Peter G

George HW Bush absolutely messed with Perot's daughter's wedding

chance

John milius did not direct Apocalypse Now... come on guys

DaFunkBackToDaPunk

Brace’s Stallone sounds like Marlon Brando with Down Syndrome

Also Called Jean Sans Coeur

Seagal sounds like a guy doing a Stallone impression, which is probably more or less what he was going for.

Michael S. Judge

William Casey straight countered "God, Guns, and Gritz" with "Smack, Crack, and Blowing Out Bo Gritz's Back"

Seth Aronovich

As deputy assistant director of the Electoral Committee of the San Francisco chapter of the DSA, I must dispute Brace's allegation that the DSA supported Bo Gritz in '92. We actually endorsed the visionary National Economic Recovery candidate.

Gordon Schmidt

Yeah this POW/MIA Liz Warren stuff is so goddamn embarrassing

B R

i have such a clear memory of noticing the POW-MIA flag on the grocery store flagpole when i was a kid and asking my mom about it…seems so quaint now! i was like “oh i hope they all come home someday!!”

Dan

Most of the time, Brace's Stallone impression is definitely Steven Seagal; the rest of the time it's Bobcat Goldthwaite.

Demented Avenger

David Morrell wrote First Blood as an anti-war book. He took a news item of a sheriff forcibly shaving a hippie and thought, "How would a returning vet react to that?"

ploob!

The Rambo animated series FUCKS

Char Kelly

The names in this episode are OFF THE CHARTS

Char Kelly

Also we need true anon to do an unethical non monogamy episode please

Colin

Bobcat Goldthwait type beat

Evan Scott

Was half expecting to hear a Born in the USA drop after Brace said Khe Sanh like that

Vincent

Hello! I was listening to your podcast and was quite interested when you put our a call for Bo Grites number. I have many numbers in my phone and, after doing a quick check, I regret to inform you I do not have Bo Grites number. Keep up the great work!!!

Alec

Brace is gonna snatch every motherfucker birthday

Corey Reynolds

I had a friend in high school who thought POW/MIA was a name and not an abbreviation. So he pronounced POW like a sound and Mia like a girls name. 🤣

ZeeBee

"Dude Where's My Dad" starring Brace Belden as Tom Waits as Steven Seagal as Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo

Colemanonymous

i audibly said "oh no.." in public when brace said ping pong

The Children of Jack Acid

Oh, Amanda Milius... we go way back. I met her when she was a teenager who, for some reason, was working at CineFile Video even though her parents were millionaires and she lived in Bel Air. Haven't seen her in years, but I can say for sure that her whole crazy conservative thing is both an act and also totally NOT an act. She used to be a "female misogynist" (her words) on the L.A. rock scene back in the early aughts and thought it was her duty to be the supportive girlfriend of a cool musician. Her major boyfriend at the time was in a bubblegum glam rock band that played a bunch of smaller clubs and did covers of Milk & Cookies and Hello songs (he's now the singer of Hammered Satin). So she was at a lot of parties doing a lot of coke with guys covered in glitter (including me!) Later on, she became good friends with Jennifer Herrema of Royal Trux. One time I missed my friend's show because Jen and Amanda tricked me into bringing them to go score heroin! (Which Jennifer hid in a special place.) And then she joined Trump's State Department! Anyway, Pamela Des Barres did a whole interview with Amanda Milius about her life as a "groupie" in a book a decade ago, and it is good reading: https://archive.org/stream/letsspendthenighttogetherbackstagepameladesbarres/Let%27s%20Spend%20the%20Night%20Together_%20Backstage%20-%20Pamela%20Des%20Barres_djvu.txt

Out of curiosity, and as someone who is not from, nor has ever been to, the US - why are Ken Burns' documentaries seen as problematic?

Mitch

I hope I'm not the first to hear Bob Dylan in braces new character then look up "how does Bob Dylan talk?" just to find out nah, I was wrong.

ocelotte

I was listening to this while taking an HR harassment class and it's wild that veterans became a protected class for work purposes. They're describing horrific cases of sexual abuse at jobs. Then they describe the discrimination that veterans get is that people think they're dedicated and loyal workers. With the bad things being that they're often thought of as not creative and not given creative work and denied opportunities for certain work due to bosses thinking they had PTSD. It actually sounds kinda cool to be discriminated at work for being a veteran.

Marcus

Is Elizabeth Warren capable of doing anything that isn't painfully embarrassing?

Max Joyner

Elizabeth Warren got confused and thought she was supporting a bill for Pow-Wow/MIA troops

Brian

Brace’s Arnold impression is actually a perfect Barney Gumble

marley

beatnik brace

EaZy E

I don't remember anything about Rambo 4 except for the village scene. At one point a soldier overhead whips a toddler into a river, full force overhand toss by both ankles. Incredible stuff.

Lizard

deciding a movie was bad on the criteria "forests were too wet" is insane

Josh Woods

The term y'all were looking for at min 28 was "soft boy". You're welcome and I'm sorry.

B JAMBOR

I fucking work at the post office and never noticed the POW flag until I listened to this series, haha. Also I read Matt farwell’s American cipher pretty recently after he was a guest, it was a great read

Breakaway

You guys talked about Bo Gritz at length and made an A Team reference with Murdoch, but you never mentioned that Hannibal is loosely based on Gritz.

Mike Bilbe-Taylor

Not even half way through this and the Depp voice is killing me.

Zane

Dreamed that there was an episode on Limonov w/ Mark Ames and Yasha Levine. This will do though.

Go'Thrak

Liz CONFIRMED New Jersey resident

People in my middle school loved Chuck Norris jokes and I had to pretend I knew who that was and also pretend they were funny it sucked so much

Nicholas Abrams

As someone who does research and writes up findings for dissemination, I just want to say I am impressed with the amount of information y’all are able to sift through, organize, and present to your listeners. Kudos on all the good work!

Methew

I don’t have his phone number, I just checked, sorry guys

K H

Brace is impersonating the special troops sent over by Mcnamara. Which was one of the sure fire ways to get the Vietnamese to actually release you.

Julian Drummond

As someone who was a big Mingus guy at 15 I feel seen

Crosley Querin

I'm in a parallel universe in which Rambo is played by Garfield Lazagna played by Nick Mullen

Joshua J Marx

Vincent Bevins is a good shit. Have him on all the time. Jakarta Method is a gem.

SF

Loved that Bob Dylan could make it

Mike Malloy

Seagal is a throat voice, Stallone is a chest voice

Keith Calleja

You neglected to mention that Rambo had a Saturday morning cartoon that red pilled a generation of young American boys and girls.

Andrew Argraves

Really liked this series keep up the great work

Houthi & the Blowfish

This is why Reagan was eating all those jelly beans. Clog up the bowels so he isn't so poopy all the time.

Methew

Liz your complex computers line floored me on 1.5 speed lol

Clarp Blarpkiss

Brace's sudden Barney Gumble: War Veteran voice made me wheeze laughing right at the beginning

Agent Grange

At the risk of outing myself as a fed, I gotta mention the POW MIA shrine. So in any DOD headquarters building you go in, right by the front door, there's a POWMIA shrine where they have to do what I can only describe as a yearly ritual. There's a single unoccupied chair so there's always a place for a POW to sit, an empty glass "because they cannot toast", and a plate with salt ("the salty tears of their loved ones") and a single slice of lemon. ("To remind us of their bitter fate.") This shrine needs to be renewed every year in a special ceremony, and *any* officer banquets MUST toast to the POW MIA shrine before anyone eats.

Kevin

Sir Chomsky, I will post this comment on each video and Patreon post in my abilities until you stop audibly blue-balling this planet and Bless us with at least an LP!

Anon Ibid

Every voice brace did this episode sounded like noel fielding's black face characters

Christopher Price

Brace's elderly beatnik sounds exactly like Bob Dylan's patter on his theme time radio show

James H

Absolute Terror

Those thousands of surviving American POWs in Indochina were in fact playing Gameboy in their bamboo cages by '92, and they were really good at it since they'd had them for nearly 3 years at that point. Brace's instincts as usual were correct.

Yangervis Solarte
