We talk through the Ivy League congressional hearing scandal before diving into the weird little world of the e/acc meme movement, Marc Andreeseen’s techno-optimist manifesto, and its misreading of the dark philosophy of Nick Land.

sick of being baited on the adult baby episode… it’s cruel

J98

I love calling anything "dark" to make it really bad ass and twisted. I'm dark commenting right now. *joker howl*

glenn mohre

Liz, the Marvel Comics character you're grasping (not grokking) for is Groo the Wanderer, Sergio Argones' Conan parody.

NYCM&AHole

I WANNA GROK! GROK! ::twisted sister riffs::

Graham Hoese

Just started cleaning my house, perfect timing. Love you guys ❤️

J98

Wait could you seriously consider an episode on friends of the idf. You briefly talked about them and they seem like a good topic.

drewb

my first exposure to Grok was to an image editor tutorial called Grokking the Gimp which is so much worse than Grok alone. Grok

Finally a dirtbag left Nick Land ‘splainer. Now have stav on to talk about basketball

Tyler

That’d be sick if it was grindcore

I am once again humbly pleading for a cybernetics episode if you haven’t already done one (if so someone plz point me to it) 🙏 it would historicize the cybernetics research unit + there’s lots of CIA stuff + whole earth catalog/neoliberal utopian fantasies galore + more historical context 4 Bay Area tech ideologies .. let’s get some mf norbert wiener in this bitch ‼️ I love the podcast btw

Valentino

What Brace is talking about at around 49:30 is going into the cyberpunk campaign i'm running

MoldyTolge

Would love a cybernetics episode and you know what? I think Liz and Brace would love to learn about it.

adult baby diaper combo IDF episode when?

Karl Childers

brace asks what this means in the real world: a lot of the peter theil type tech oligarchs are operating out of basically the same assumptions as nick land whether consciously or not, and imo its good to know what kind of psychos are actually in charge. perhaps another ep like this with just liz and a guest would be a good follow up, tbh i found this pretty eye opening cuz ive never actually looked into nick land. glad to learn a little more about his influence.

Speaking of tech assholes having garbage takes on sci-fi literature, add Charles Stross’ “Accelerando” and anything Peter Watts has done to the pile.

where was Liz when i needed her to explain all this shit to me in college 😭🥺

It is really fucking crazy how much Marc andreesen looks like an egg. Like wear a hat or something man no one wants to see that

Corey Reynolds

Dude! Tech guy talk is sooo condescending and self righteous without saying anything. I follow people on IG like that.

Doug Cartel

John Robert Marlow wrote Nano and that was this goofy fiction thriller using characters to expound on the pros and cons of nanotechnology, and then Charles Stross wrote Accelerando, and those were the two books that were my intro to that whole accelerationism thing. Then I grew up etc etc and it's like yeah, I would love (pause not) to have nanomachines running through my veins in a world where misplacing a comma can wreck a UI You think Ray Kurzweil's been to Little St James? Sorry to be a simp but I could listen to Liz talk about Deleuze all day

“Grokking the coding interview” is a very well known course in tech for prepping for interviews. Never knew the word’s origin, interesting

Eric

I didn’t know this was a “thing”, as they say in the popular vernacular, but it makes perfect sense that it is indeed a “thing”. Sufficiently disturbing. As always I would share water and become “water brothers” with the TA crew any day.

oj3e08ewr

“Grok’s woke” is the new “Oatly”.

Why are these freaks into AI destroying humanity, just invest in oil companies lol

Eric

Im concerned that Young Chomsky didn’t do at least one Elder Scrolls IV OST drop. You okay guy?

Nick Land is Foucault to the power square without any rational grounding. Highly random, volatile and amoral. As if ass cancer farts were Omicron squared by the power of measles.

Harrison Sanchez

The Matterhorn Yeti really did a number on a lot of people - First Trixie Mattel now Brace!

Podcasts like this are my only real escape from all the constant BS surrounding Israel/Gaza. Conservative friends/family have really seized on this college campus thing and I’ve unfortunately taken the bait a few times. The latest was “so if students were chanting ‘kill all gays!’ you’d defend their free speech?!” I just can’t with the baby-brained stuff right now. Glad there are some people who see through all this crap.

Natalie

You just need to say. They aren't. So now what

Natalie

my subscription is about to expire and I canceled to put a down payment on a car but I feel like I'm being ripped away from my friends like ......I don't wanna leave !!

Nick Land has as much of a legal right for ‘self defense’ against acts of resistance with extreme prejudice from humanity writ large as the state of Israel does from illegally occupied Palestinians.

AbeLinkin

MIT isn’t an Ivy

Toddy Todd

Speaking as someone who spends time on a college campus idk what’s going on either

Minnesota_Cold

Ugh I have a girl friend who loves talking about Nick Land and over the past 3 years she's gone from trans-friendly, Matt Christman appreciator, and labor rights advocate to a braindead Red Scare neo-right "cunt" (I believe that's the correct word). It's been extremely painful to see happen, like a CCTV recording of someone walking into a sinkhole. I don't know if it was primarily other cultural forces that drove her into this current state or if it was her obsession with Land. I honestly believe it was the latter.

Neil Evans

Surprised by the ultravox shout out at the end. Hymn is the best religious pop song

Dark enlightenment. All exit no voice

Liz beautiful mind splainer. I need a splainer for the splainer. I am pro human annihilation though. I will say, capitalism is the biggest hindrance to the best kind of ai. Because really, the ultimate intelligence probably wouldn't bother to answer a human and if it did the response would be nothing we could understand. Capitalism has no use for such a machine. It only has use for people when that part of them is stripped away.

Monica

occasionally i don’t know what you guys are talking about but it’s still nice to hear your voices

malpertuis

Oh my god, I blushed! Ultravox was the soundtrack to my high school 1st love. Luckily he got me into Moorcock and not Heinlein.

Deleuze & Guattari are largely responsible for why I quit grad school. I was in an English Literature program and you had to be able to bullshit about certain philosophers and they were vital to that bullshit within English graduate departments. I tried reading Anti-Oedipus 3 separate times and could never make it more than 40 pages through it without quitting and audibly rolling my eyes at how fucking dumb & try-hard it is. I love the Schreber case & Freud's analysis of it, but when Deleuze goes off about rays of sunlight coming out of his asshole I can't handle it. Read Freud instead.

HK

this is incomprehensible and I'm not willing to do the meth needed to understand it

Tommy York

Lmao I also read Stranger in a Strange land in like 6th or 7th grade then had an authority figure (shoutout to my science teacher) kind of gently tell me that most of what Heinlein wrote was trash and was to be avoided. Only after rewatching Starship Troopers as an adult (the movie is based a Heinlein novel of the same name) and after one of the Chapo lectures on it, did I realize how deeply fascist Heinlein is. Starship Troopers depicts a like, utopian society in Heinlein’s mind.

Hikikamore

somewhere there is a guy on fentanyl who has it all figured out

Hikikamore

Brace, what you are looking for is the Butlerian Jihad. Retvrn!

Eric

I love this from quote from Philip K Dick (a far superior writer of sf) “God bless him—one of the few true gentlemen in this world. I don't agree with any ideas he puts forth in his writing, but that is neither here nor there. One time when I owed the IRS a lot of money and couldn't raise it, Heinlein loaned the money to me. I think a great deal of him and his wife; I dedicated a book to them in appreciation. Robert Heinlein is a fine-looking man, very impressive and very military in stance; you can tell he has a military background, even to the haircut. He knows I'm a flipped-out freak and still he helped me and my wife when we were in trouble. That is the best in humanity, there; that is who and what I love."

Eric

You seem cool. Have you ever read Rendezvous with Rama?

Kathleen Stevenson

that was the best explanation of d&g + ccru i’ve ever heard! now i wish i could hear liz talk about lefty accelerationism, too

K H

Yes. Morgan Freeman wanted to make it into a movie. One of the best scifi books out there complete with polyamory.

the only way we can fight E ACK and AI is through synthesizers. goddamn Liz knocks it out of the park on this one

A decade ago I watched a TV white supremacistoccultist use very Nick Land ideas (in a chaos magick context), drugs, and music crack several vulnerable idiots open and turn them into far right psychos. When I pushed back I ended up with a psychotic break. Ended up with me figuring some stuff out and rebuilding myself as a person but.... Didn't come out so great for those other people

Wow, Land is even more of a *** weirdo than I ever thought. This reminds me of the weird dumb shit that British nerd David Myatt and the other weird nerds behind groups like Atomwaffen came up with, just trying to come up with the most 'satanic' and 'nazi' shit in the hopes that it would get them laid with edgy goth chicks.

As someone with a useless BA in Comparative Literature and an absolutely destroyed mind, I can confirm this.

Good on you, Liz, for being like the only person to pronounce ‘respite’ right

Tommy York

Aw, that's sweet. Love PKD and slowly working through his novels, so I guess I'll forgive Heinlein for his fashy ideas. Sometimes nice people have horrific ideas.

Michael S. Judge

I bumped into a fair number of Nick Land people in academia, and the dude has been absolutely cranked on various species of amphetamines since the early 1990s, and used to "give lectures" by setting up light shows, taking ecstasy, and "dancing out" his theses. His entire "intellectual contribution," which isn't one, is to rewrite (lazily) Deleuze & Guattari in the context of "What if we were all basically Father Coughlin?" He's not just dumb, he's corny as a motherfucker. You know how you went to school with a couple kids who got made fun of a lot, and they started wearing huge black pants and trying to scare you with the idea that they might do a school shooting? Nick Land is that for the philosophy department.

Axel H.

Yeah the path from 'dirtbag left' to 'neo-right Red Scare cunt' is not uncommon. Sucks seeing it happen in real time.

Michael S. Judge

the Land thing these dipshits don't get is that "utopia," for Land, is explicitly what he calls "Exit" – a complete end to the world as it is. He doesn't give a shit HOW, or why, or whom it benefits and whom it destroys, he just wants to live on another planet

NYCM&AHole

I say we just send him to one right now.

Michael S. Judge

And you see this same shit in a different variant on the nominally "leftist" wing of modern philosophy (which is still nowhere near as stupid as "analytic philosophy"): what Land would call Exit or the Noumenal, your standard Cambridge leftist would call "the Absolute," and he'd be fixated upon Hegel and the Hegelian aspects of 1950s-’70s French philosophy rather than Kant and the Kantian aspects of 1950s-’70s French philosophy ... and usually, in my personal experience, rather than locating "Exit" in techno-genomic destruction of "humanity qua humanity" or some shit, this theoretical person would either locate "the Absolute" in completely torturous readings of avant-garde poetry that somehow construe it as Maoist, or (s)he would never locate it at all and eventually become a disappointed liberal. Many Such Cases.

Michael S. Judge

for all Land's malignant influence on Silicon Valley jerkoffs, I'm pretty sure they would've found their way to the same place without him, and Land is mostly just sad to me – a guy so enraged with the limitations of his own brain that he ripped it in half to get the secret prize inside, and there wasn't one.

Michael S. Judge

There's some of that, but it's important to understand that Land was doing the midwit, literal-minded version of this shit. Deleuze & Guattari were trying to find another method of thinking, because they thought all the major currents of the 19th and 20th centuries had dead-ended by 1975. If Nick Land read them and thought "Smoke crystal until you Merge with the Noumenal Borg," as he evidently did, then Nick Land is not too bright

Michael S. Judge

The key thing – and I'm sure Liz knows this, just for the benefit of other listeners – is that Deleuze & Guattari were just trying to explain the way MEANING works, much as Derrida did, and they were particularly focused on why psychoanalysis and the political analyses of the left had failed in a hegemonically capitalist period. They wanted to know, "What is it about meaning that we don't understand, from the most subjective selfhood to the meanest, hardest material facts of economy, and why do we keep fucking it up?" And then you get a whole lot of assholes who, in my experience, largely don't even read the books, they just latch onto a few spicy paragraphs, and they pursue all this shit in a staggeringly literal-minded and doctrinaire way that makes D&G, or Derrida, or whoever, seem like nonsense, because their acolytes largely ARE talking nonsense. Makes me sad.

Shiv

FINE i support Liz and MJ Basketball-Philosophy spinoff

Shiv

what about how Brace pronounced vista (veesta) i found it very charming

Shiv

I am new to this chap but my read was articulated effectively by BB. Ok so you open your kinder-brain and there’s a prize (or not, as the case may be). Now what??? Especially if you cranked yourself there

Shiv

what are you doing/what have you learned/who are you becoming/who are you helping/how do we link&build (lol) etc?? oh it’s just Kill ‘Em All? seems like you could have gotten there with regular nihilism?

Karl Childers

please do an ep on this stuff with liz! some of us are keenly interested but don't have either of your background experience or frankly just instinct for what is and isn't bullshit.

malpertuis

Excellent annotations - Thank you.

Matt Jolo

On the one hand we have Land, who has absolutely no problem with the annihilation of the human race through capitalistic accelerationism fantasy and on the other we have "Andreeseen" who is a techno-windbag who completely missed Land's conclusions. Wow. Match made in heaven.W

A Sentient Katamari of Bad Life Decisions

Can't say I'm an AI doomer, since this stuff is not "Artificial Intelligence" in any meaningful sense. Computer scientists figured out how to do a decent pattern finding/matching algorithm and now they think they've cracked sentience. They're like the ancient Greek inventors who discovered steam power, sure there's a clear technological line from that to the jet engine but it will require an entirely different economic and scientific paradigm to take it even one step further than a mildly entertaining toy. And that's the unlikely scenario that any of this is even going in the right direction towards creating actual, sentient AI. It's all just another silicon valley cult.

I learned the word "noumenon" because it was how my grandfather referred to anything his cat threw up.

JV

i both went to the same uni land taught at, though a few years after he left, and also grew up in the nearby town. so towards the end of my undergrad as fisher and the CCRU were coming back in vogue in the wake of '08 with stuff like capitalist realism, I ended up writing a lot on land in my dissertation and through that learning more about this stuff that had preceded me in this place by barely a generation. turned out that after getting kicked out the uni the CCRU's office was above this particular cosmetics shop on the main street that I always used to walk by on my way to school, probably passed by them all the time. really felt like i'd just missed this amazing contemporary avant garde scene that was grappling with all of my same most obsessive interests.

JV

i did actually briefly meet mark fisher a few years after graduating as he came back to give some talks and was also supervising a friend's phd. really nice in person, but can't emphasise enough how short he was. like he was the height i imagine brace to be

I would pay good money to have Liz calmly explain Deleuze to me

Parochial Nimrod

This is the good shit! Love hearing about the 90s mark fisher adjacent techno culture philosophy freaks. Dying, yearning even, for an ep with Chelsea Manning and or Simon Reynolds discussing the cultural dialectics of jungle music

Came to the comments to say this, I respect the TA commitment to disrespecting British people and their accents but...not War-wick...it's like saying War-chester for Worcester...

I stand with Warwick on this. WARWICK HAS A RIGHT TO DEFEND ITSELF!

Parochial Nimrod

Also unsurprising that the E/Accs have been usurped by the G/Accs. Truly gonna be a slow and cringe apocalypse

I’m just a little baby zoomer, but fisher, plant, haraway etc rocked my shit and i stayed kind of a slut for this British cyborg/raver/tweaker/jungle/britpop/French philosophy stuff since. I loved this ep. “sad cover band” and “perfect circle” gets at the exact feeling I get watching these hollow Patagonia vest types. Scary times. Reminds me of nietzsche’s Nazi sister but Now Nick’s Nazis. Brace might be tired but he’s right about the peasants. “I love human beings” who can hate on that???

Rj

Grok's woke

Catherine Morrison

Please don’t repeat that Americans didn’t fuck with continental philosophy until the mid-late 90’s. It’s wildly untrue and easily disproven!

Billy Gray

One of the more difficult eps because listening to any run on sentence of these bullshit manifestos is way too painful and the idea that they got AI to write it for them is almost certainly true

Billy Gray

The more meth you do, the more Nazi you become: 100%

2026-09-09 19:00 Liz can you start a spinoff podcast where you just explain philosophy please
2023-12-16 07:08

Michael S. Judge

I've read FANGED NOUMENA, admittedly quite a while ago, and I did not see anything that built on Deleuze & Guattari in any direction but the one he ended up taking. He had a prose style, that's true, but whatever's interesting in that book (apart from a pathology study) struck me as reformulated D&G in glitchy cyberspeak, not really new

helvetica.hottie

In my experience and thoughts on the matter of going through the door, if you go through the door, you can't come back out. In the physical world, if you walk through the door you end up one of the spaced out, straight jacket, balled up in the corner type shell of a human. It's super sad, I've seen it happen to my ex husband. I knew I never wanted to go through the door.

excellent episode with some deep liz thoughts

Liz please do a bonus episode for explaining pomo stuff in plain language

On grok: "Grok means to understand so thoroughly that the observer becomes a part of the observed – to merge, blend, intermarry, lose identity in group experience. It means almost everything that we mean by religion, philosophy, and science – and it means as little to us (because we are from Earth) as color means to a blind man.” The usage that I’m most interested in is the idea that people understand something so intimately that they are not even conscious why they understand it. To grok something by this definition means that you understand it in a way that is more intuitive than intellectual. You get the essence of what it means, but mostly because it just feels right – not because you’ve been formally taught anything about it.

South_Coast_Sheep_Head

i was just thinking about how i wanted to return to Land’s ideas - another great episode!

Kyle Petty

So I had never heard of "Jungle," and listened to a handful songs. I don't think the music is bad on it's own but I can already see the type of people that would be attracted to this 🤣 It immediately made me think of these two couples I was friends with that went through a cocaine phase. During this phase whenever I would hang out with the four of them, they would not stop playing House Music. They were acting like the experience was the greatest, mind-altering, transcendent, etc. Like Brace is saying, In essence this whole persona is just Tweaker Mentality but dressed up with a sheen of tech money.

Degrassi Knoll

For whatever reason drum n bass is the only electronic music I ever got into A lot of djs were/are metal fans as well. Still dig it but just listening to tracks vs live sets would lead most to just see the repetitive nature. Also jungle refers to the early period where things were more basic - though terms are interchangeable for many...

Spencer McKee

great episode, thanks for taking this topic so seriously and going deep on it!

Kyle Petty

Yeah as I said I've never heard of this band before so I'm just going off of Wikipedia, But I'm getting the impression there more focused on live shows and that is the real experience. I also understand with live shows that bands can really be actual musicians compared to a recording. I want to reiterate I can see the appeal of the music on it's own, I was more just commenting on the type of person that they were painting, which encompasses more than their taste of music. This is because I've personally experienced these types of people. For example, I love the Grateful Dead, Sublime, Phish but there is that type of person who adopta those bands as their whole persona and they are, "that guy," if you get what I mean

This episode displays why nobody should ever go to college.

Half the time it felt like random adjectives strung together, I don't understand this. Maybe I'm just dumb, cool episode though

Doc Adna

MIT = nerd school, i cracked up too hard

Knosnothing

Agreed. I think there are some creative concepts in there. I personally like 1000 Plateaus more than AO but if you want psychoanalysis, I agree that Freud is where to start.

Knosnothing

If you are into the philosophy part of this ep check out the podcast Why Theory. They go into way more detail and have a much better grasp and are much more skilled in explaining these ideas. Good summary stuff in this ep but def some things that aren't explained the clearest.

Knosnothing

Also do a deeper dive into cybernetics super sus vibes.

Do you know the name of the episode?

Fiddypea

Might just put Burial's seminal self-titled debut album on.

I am too stupid for this one. Appreciate the content tho

Knosnothing

They have some about D&G from a fee years ago. They are more on the Lacanian psychoanalytic/Hegelian side vs the Deluzian/Nietzschian/historicist movement.

dan

Agreed on Derrida, but one of the arguments that Deleuze & Guattari make over and over again is that leftist theory got captured by techno-capitalism precisely by reducing philosophy/theory to the description of ‘how meaning works’. This is their critique of linguistic-turn structuralists like Lacan, Barthes, Levi-Strauss, etc. In A Thousand Plateaus, (following the weirdo materialist semiology of Hjelmslev) assemblages are organized on a plane of expression (discourse) AND a plane of content (matter), and D&G insist again and again that each of these planes have their own form and their own substances. Translated out of annoying D&G terms, this means that the way that meaning is organized does not resemble or represent the way that matter is organized. This matters because if we (wrongly) take matter to be organized like meaning (by asserting things like “the unconscious is structured like language”), then we repeat the error of the linguistic structuralists by naturalizing the ready-made organization of meaning through our study of it. The line of Spinoza that every annoying new materialist parrots, “We don’t yet know what a body can do,” is actually a pretty good here: if we reduce the project of knowing what our bodies are capable of to a project of simply describing what they mean in the discourses that currently structure them, we naturalize those structures and trap ourselves within them.

People's Housing Project

I love this episode. I want more of Liz going off on philosophy - I could listen to hours of that kind of conversation

Michael S. Judge

Sure, but that IS part of how meaning works, namely that it DOESN'T work like matter, that "the unconscious is a factory, not a theater" and so on. When I say "how meaning works," that also includes all the processes and objects that have to be dissociated from a linguistic or (awful word) "symbolic" analysis.

Degrassi Knoll

There are only 2 or 3 "bands" that do this style of music .... Pendulum in Britain is the only commercially viable one I can even think of CHECK OUT "kj sawka" on YouTube- honestly one of the best drummers I've seen in ANY genre

Degrassi Knoll

the crazy guy

I haven't read him, but, from Liz's explanation of his work, I don't really see what Land's epistemological and metaphysical thinking is supposed to account for, tbh. Kinda feels like the kind of thing that only really makes sense if you're him, exactly (obsessed with Lovecraft, Transcendental Idealism and really, profoundly misanthropic).

16:00 glad I'm not the only one who noticed that while Israel is quite happy to be brutally honest with their goals and actions, the western media will still spin it as "well, what they *actually* mean is..." apologia.

This episode rules. I actually took out student loans for a high falutin art school to learn about it in the first year of my graduate program and remembered none of it / I could have skipped all that and listened to this four years later because that degree has done nothing for me
