Spacey on Tucker (in character?). Glenn Greenwald debating with the Krassenstein Internet shit heads, a video game streamer (I think), all while backing up Alex Jones and creepy AF Trump speech writer Darren Beattie. Weird stuff.

Ryan Fox

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Matt Jolo

Let's go! I've been waiting for this all week!

Justin Hubbard

Is Liz the only person Brace knows with a normal name

Ded1000

Frank Card?! Lol, not character's name

Jack Rockwood

What is the point of a curtain if we’re always getting peaks behind it?

yerrak

Wait did I miss the part where we decided to call him frank card?!?

Hal Warren

The conviction with which and the number of times that they say it is making me question reality.

Ded1000

100% Spacey is a cold plunge psycho. I have no idea what he was getting at with the hottubb thing.

Mark Owen

They say I'm crazy, I really don't care That's my prerogative They say I'm nasty But I don't give a damn Getting girls is how I live

K H

Colleges and universities have money for research. The Economist podcast had an episode last year I think. It was about how universities were using their money to operate as a venture capital funds. They didn't state it explicitly, but I suspect that is behind all these researchers starting their own companies all the time. There was some kind of debate about allowing that kind of investment in the UK. I want to say that same episode discussed expanding that activity into pension funds as well. This is all to say, the drive for money is not coming from researching breakthroughs. Though I'd imagine a person could do quite well for themself wearing a labcoat while talking to a guy trying to preserve his brain and his dick. I'm surr there are a few Dr. Nicks out there driving very nice cars.

LPO Crane Jefferson

The news coverage of the game has been fun and a perfect showcasing of high level extremely researched journalisming by journalists.

Methew

Like this if u got trueanon edition of storm the capitol

Robert Sayre

Y'all made it into Newsweek, though. I think it came up in the iPhone sidebar in Apple News: "'Storm The Capitol' Board Game Lets People Fight Police, Steal Artifacts"

alex

speak on it mark 🗣️

MediocreDude

Why are you calling him Frank Card? At first I thought it was a joke but now I'm seriously wondering if they don't know the character's name is Frank Underwood.

Tim O'

🎵 We didn't start the fire 🎵

Tryg

I have a list of podcasts that I give money to, and guess what, there is just one name on it. You know it. You love it. X x

game Q: what's the difference between TrueAnon edition and standard edition?

Kelson

I didn't know what his name was, haha. I know of the show so Frank Card worked for me.

Swimaroo

I would only eat smokey BBQ flavor bugs

böll

in the burning churches I pray on my kneeeeees

SodiumPackets

Only differences are the TrueAnon edition has their logo on it and says it’s that edition. Pretty sure that’s it.

Ivan Lopez

They should release a simple video game version of the board game on Steam. They would make a gajillion dollars and the grey lady would probably publish the story.

Patrick Cleary

the frank card thing is like how one time felix from chapo said “occluded mahdi” instead of “occulted” and now they’ve all convinced each other that’s what it’s called

will michel

i am often in a position to be first comment but i always pass it on to someone less fortunate, just a silent hero looking for a little recognition

While I appreciate most of Liz's take on the bullshit content-generating nature of academia, as someone who has spent some time in academia, I have to critique the line "good academics, interesting academics... don't become administrators; those are bureaucrats." I'll call it rather misleading instead of flat out false. The nature of tenure-track positions is that they must do administrative work in order to advance or even maintain their positions. Admittedly, I'm a lifelong non-tenure-track teacher, so I don't know the nuances, but to say that interesting & important scholars don't partake in administration is just false; they have no choice but to participate. It's also just as bad to say that administrators are inherently bad or empty careerists; many administrators have done a lot of good at the public universities I've worked at (though this is probably less true with Ivyesque private unis). Look at Ol' Chomsky who, despite his own strange Epstein meeting, is definitely an "interesting academic" who has had administrative roles throughout his career. He even currently acts as the Agnese Nelms Haury Chair at the U of A while being 'retired' technically. While it's probably a perfunctory title, that doesn't mean he isn't doing at least a little administrative work. tl;dr: academia is complicated, but good scholars do administrative work, and administrators in universities aren't inherently evil bureaucrats.

uya

have they mentioned on the pod how Robert Maxwell laid a lot of the foundations for the modern scientific journals industry? its how he made his fortune. the newspaper business is what he did with that fortune not how he earned it. i feel like that’s so important when talking about the scientist angle

Kinetics Video

It's actually a game about Egyptian struggle for independence

Kinetics Video

Doctorb? The B is for your brain and balls, which is what I will preserve

I'm hoping someone will recreate it in Tabletop Simulator soon. All my similarly brain-rotted friends are long distance and we want to play together so bad.

Let the record show that always have my underpants on when I listen to true anon

Li Hongzhi

I get why the show is called house of card now

Marco von Ballmoos

Is there a point at which Kevin Spacey will no longer be called a child rapist? I think it's accurate that you both eventually landed on "ex-alleged child rapist", because it's technically true. But with those rules, someone could accuse someone else of being a child rapist, stop doing it, and technically still be able to call that person an "ex-alleged child rapist" for the rest of their lives. You get to continue to cram the words "child rapist" into every sentence mentioning their name without running the risk of slander. A neat trick. From Spacey's Wikipedia entry: "In his first British court appearance, on June 16, Spacey denied the allegations against him.[184] On July 14, he pleaded not guilty to the charges in London.[185][186] On November 16, the CPS authorized an additional seven charges against Spacey, all related to a single complainant arising from incidents alleged to have occurred between 2001 and 2004.[187][188] Three charges were dismissed before or during the trial, which began on June 28, 2023, and, on July 26, 2023, a jury found Spacey not guilty of the remaining nine charges.[4][5]"

Frank Card has dispatched his shooters to the trueanon patreon armed with a wikipedia entry called Justice and a briefcase that hitherto had contained $5.

J zub

Spacey’s character in House of Cards is named Frank Underwood

Grace

Liz is so spot on with the research funding bit, but more pressingly what were our thoughts on the RHOSLC finale?

mrs. subb

Lost boner awareness

Domvan

The incentive issue in academia is a real thing. It additionally plays into how modern universities are often elaborate real estate schemes and rely on heavily exploited graduate student labor. More papers-more funding-more labs-more students coming in (on student visas that are forced to work in the campus cafeteria because you don’t pay them enough to qualify)-more buildings-more land eminent domained, etc etc. leads to unreplicable papers that get more grants that the university siphons to start the whole process over again

Liz cookin on this one

Frank card lmao

Bryson Martinez

Fuck Kevin spacey who gives a fuck. He’s a child rapist. Michael Jackson won some cases too. Just because you win a court case doesn’t mean you did not do something. Welcome to fucking America guy. Let your teen son go sleep at his house then. Go on.

kallampero

Something in this episode that bittersweetly overlaps with my area of expertise... The conditions that Liz speaks of in the academic research and publishing world can be placed under a couple of different headers: namely, publish or perish, impact factor, and the shifting of the stated preferences and policies of the National Science Foundation circa 5 or so years ago to fund "transformative research." Publish or perish is more or less what it sounds like; the quota, stated or unstated, that researchers are expected if not required to meet in terms of churning out peer-reviewed papers, which incentivizes quantity over quality in scientific output. Impact factor is intrinsically intertwined in this. This is the point/ranking system devised by Research Gate, which assigns numerical value to research, researchers, and journals on the basis of the number of citations each has received. The system appeared years ago without any kind of prior consultation or consensus, is 100% gameable, and has radically transformed the previous set of (admittedly flawed) incentives to do "good" research, replacing it with incentives to publish research in the most cited/"prestigious" journals, with as many similarly well-cited/"prestigious" coauthors as one can cling to. The impacts (no pun intended) of this have extended, but are not limited, to research institutions requiring or prioritizing impact factor scores of a certain level as part of their hiring criteria. It also has resulted in papers coming out with obscenely long lists of coauthors. Perhaps most importantly, it has resulted in bad science, which all too often clears editorial/peer review out of some combination of apathy, wheel-greasing/backdoor dealing, and increased demands on increasingly resource-strapped (and almost always entirely unpaid) editorial staff/reviewers. Lastly, the openly stated shift toward "transformative research" by the NSF in the US is, essentially, a statement of intent on the part of the largest source of science funding in the wealthiest country on Earth to reward hips for being taller than feet. It's a nonsense position, but a position that agency holds nonetheless, that in order for research to merit the awarding of grant money, it must promise or portend the kinds of results that are fundamentally unpredictable ahead of time, require a bunch of less "sexy" foundational research, or both. In a way, it's quintessentially American. It's an ADHD-ification of the entire scientific funding model. It's "give me the harvest without the soil tilling, seed sowing, fertilizing, irrigation, and sunlight." It's ludicrous, and it's 100% how things work now, with limited exceptions. I have the tiniest, academic-adjacent window of insight into these evils, and then only as they pertain to my field (fungal diversity), but they have absolutely made their presence known there and continue to in increasing intensity on a month-by-month, year-by-year basis. They fold neatly into the larger problem of the general defunding of science in the US, to say nothing of other countries, as mentioned by Liz, the corporatization of "the academy," and the strange bedfellows that "real" (and not so "real") scientists find themselves or their colleagues turning to in order to carry out work that used to be, and ought to be, publicly funded. There's a scene in the Avatar sequel where a scientist ("Dr. Ian Garvin"), stuck aboard that whaling vessel harvesting "amrita," says something about being an alcoholic to cope with the devil's bargain he makes every day aboard that ship. That was the single most memorable scene for me in that entire (long ass) film, not because of the similar bargains I've personally had to make (thankfully), but because of how many academics I know who do, every day, in big or small ways, to a despairing and self-loathing degree, with no apparent reconciliation or solution in sight. On the contrary, things only appear to be getting worse.

Redwing Farm

Wrong. The show’s called House of Cards not House of Underwoods.

Dez Martin

nobody's reading that

Carl Miller

I copied and pasted my thesis. It would not compute.

Eggie

I paused the episode to read it. Would subscribe.

I hate to sound hysterical and/or moralizing, but Brace is consistently homophobic (usually in a plausibly deniable way, which is extra fucking annoying) and it pains and depresses me, as a gay listener. I'm dimly aware of this having been a thing on X in the middle past, and I can only presume that all the people who spoke up then came across as self-serving scolds or whatever. And that this permitted Brace to go right on burnishing his self-image as an impeccable leftist holy fool or whatever. But, ex: the way he indulgently emphasizes "GAY" in the Kevin Spacey description is .... well, typical and predictable. Not his conscious intention, I'm sure, but still, a way of slyly making sure that any fairies who are listening feel like garbage. So, Brace, thanks a lot!

grymm

Is it just normal to have bosses that brag about having had worked for McKinsey & Co. these days? Asking for a friend.

SF

Can confirm you are a hysterical scold lol
