Growing up with a distorted sense of love where for the longest time it felt transactional and came with a fear of abandonment, for the first time in my life as a 16 year old when I reached this point in the story, I got a taste of what real love feels like as I sobbed my heart out. Never before had I cried to a story, I thought I wasn’t capable of feeling so deeply, and one piece came and make me love a ship so deeply it just felt unreal. After that point I was a different person. Words cannot express how thankful I am to Oda for teaching me how to open my heart to the world. 11 years later I am glad to be experiencing this again with you Flexie!

Iceburg fixing the ship is a good encapsulation of why I love the storytelling in One Piece. It is such an act of faith. The man has maybe heard rumors of spirits that live in ships, but in the middle of a storm he heard a voice tell him that it "wanted to set sail" so he repaired a ship. There was nothing in it for him. The action also isn't based on any logic. He risked his life in a storm repairing a ship he knew was too broken to ever reach the next island because he heard a voice. As I experience more of life, seeing a character just put goodness out into the world without any ulterior motive and not truly even knowing the purpose of the goodness makes me more and more emotional. And for him to see Merry show back up with the strawhats onboard was a good payoff to that faith.

I’ve known One Piece since I was a kid. Back then, the whole concept of a rubber man blew my mind.. it was so fresh, something I’d never seen before. But I used to watch it on our local national TV channel, dubbed in Arabic. I remember the show would always get to a certain point, right around the Alabasta arc, and then just loop back to the beginning. I guess the channel only had the rights up to that point or something. ​Fast forward years later my interests had completely changed. One day back in high school, a bunch of us were sitting around debating movies and entertainment. Everyone was listing their ultimate picks for best action, best comedy, best drama, you name it. I’ll never forget how we all burst out laughing when the guy we considered the most 'cinephile' and sophisticated critic in our group dropped his answer: Best drama? One Piece. Best mystery? One Piece. ​I literally laughed in his face and said, 'How can a show about a rubber guy be that dramatic?' ​He looked at me and said, 'If a story can make you cry over a literal piece of wood.. over a ship.. how is that not the peak of drama?' ​That single line convinced me to finally give One Piece a shot. And honestly? He didn't stretch the truth one bit. One Piece is hands-down the GOAT. It has absolutely everything, and it excels at all of it 🐐💯👏🏼

Something that i read a long ago, someone was pointing out, that in this arc we had 3 different way of loosing a relatives via Usopp robin and Merry. Usopp went away on his own because of his lack of self confidence, Robin was taken away from external factor (CP9), and Merry just had see the end of the road and cannot go any further. And for me that part is the reason for why this arc narrative is brillant, everyone can easily relate to at least one of the 3 situation whatever the age of the reader/watcher. And also the fact that merry is an object so people can also relate the "grief" of something we lost that was dear to our heart (toy, dolls...) without taking away to human side to it

It seems that Mayumi Tanaka, the voice actress for Luffy, couldn’t hold back her tears and ended up sobbing during the recording session. I'm a manga geek, so there's one thing I want to share with you: the title of the manga this story is based on. In Japanese it’s 降り注ぐ追想の淡雪 in English it’s Falling Snow of Reminiscence. Personally, I just really like this title.

35:45 when the animation goes to this style, I believe the scene is hand done by the at the time director of animation. He has a very fluid style that emphasizes the “feeling” of form and movement over the accuracy of the form.

The will of this ship and the love for the crew has revealed her love for Iceberg herself. At the end of Enie's lobby, it was not possible for us viewers to understand Merry. But with her last trip, we spectators became part of the crew and we were able to understand her last words. The love for this ship reached us and only in the last moments made us realize how incredible this ship had been. We all grew up that day, even with tears in our eyes.

Quick reminder. Canonically, we've only had the Merry for like 6 weeks and here we are all bawling our eyes out now that we have to say goodbye to it. Merry could have stayed "in tact" and/or stripped for parts had she stayed at the ship graveyard but loved her crew so much that she was willing to sacrifice her all for them. True to Kaku and Franky's words, Merry was unable to take them to their "next island" so, even with the help of Iceburg, their assessment was correct.

This arc encapsulates everything I love about one piece. The action packed and epic moments like gear second or gear third, the goofy side like when Zoro fights with Usop as his sword, but also the trauma and heart braking scenes that are overcome through friendship and faith. I loved one piece since the first episode put it was this moment when it became my most loved story of all time. The lengths the crew goes for their friends, even marry sailing herself till she breaks to safe her friends is just beautiful. Im really glad you are enjoying this show and were since the start, because I think a lot of people say one piece gets good when you get to the 300s. I think this is just when they realize that they are crying over a ship, but most people don't get that it's every single episode and every minute we spent with our crew that makes this scene this impactful. I can safely say that one piece changed my life and my view on life as a whole.

It's all packed into this moment as we always had this ship to return to. It was always waiting for us. Ready to take us to the next journey, the next adventure. But it ends here. And with tears in my eyes, the most meaningful thing I can say is thank you, Merry.

Something else to think about, but the Going Merry was loved from the very first thought. If I remember, Merry personally designed it after Luffy beat the snot out of Kuro and saved the village. And the villagers would have built it with care because of their appreciation for the straw hats saving everyone. And then the straw hats themselves treated her with tender care and respect through every adventure. She's was a grand old gal at the end.

Oda never kills characters outside of flashbacks, so when this episode happened, it felt like such a bittersweet ending to this saga where our crew hit their lowest point in Water 7, bounce back in Enies Lobby to save Robin but only to lose Merry in the end.
