Fuck yeah! I think this is the anime I’ve rewatched the most. I love this fucking show, can’t wait for you to hit season 4. Long days and pleasant nights!

cass

best way to start the day and the week. Thank you Flexie 🩵 edit: thanks for the yap session at the start, honestly I too could talk and listen to people discuss this for hours me toooooo Flex it’s actually horrible to see them cross paths without saying a single word to each other, breaks my heart every single time

Justin

2 weeks no Haikyuu was diabolical, so happy it’s back!!!!! Have a great day flexie!!!

Nishinoya is 100% the best on the team. And I met my best friend when I was 3, and we've been best buddies for over 30 years, we can complete each other's sentences. Kinda bums me out to see Hinita and Kageyama have that dynamic, but never had the time to grow together. It takes years of bickering before you can meld with someone else into a seamless team.

Song

"he went to the best setter he knows" heck yeah Oikawa is one of the best setter

Alex Hencher

"Don't fix it if it ain't broke" vs "There's always a better way" clash in an insane way right here. Reminds me of a final quote "Perfection is the eternal enemy of, good enough."

Season 2 training arc lets gooo!!! 💫💫💫 I'm so excited that you're loving the world of haikyu so much already, Flexie!! Soo excited for the next batch of Tokyo away gamessss 💖

Flexie, I really enjoyed that big discussion at the beginning! It's stuff like that that keeps me supporting you. You clearly enjoy the show, and that always sparks the best talks! I don't want to type out a whole essay for you here, but I've shared many of your thoughts. There's a lot to think about during this season! We *do* need a conversation between the two main boys! But the entire team is changing and evolving. Eagerly waiting for you to see the next training period 😊

Oikawa = Kirsche Vermillion = Jack the Ripper

Flexie if you loved this episode already, you’re going to LOVEEEE this training camp, TRUST. Really great discussion in the beginning, there really is so much to say for the direction of season 2. And Tsukki….well, I’ll be curious about your thoughts later. (For the Shiratorizawa guy, most people call him Ushiwaka or Ushijima) I looovvveeeee this episode. Hinata was validated in his feelings and wishes, by both Old Ukai and Oikawa. Because ultimately, the setter is the control tower, they set the ball to their spikers in the best spot they deem for that play. BUT….theyre not the one with the final say. Once the ball leaves their hands, it’s all up to the spiker. Not trying to downplay setters because a great setter can elevate average spikers, like Hinata, just as a horrible setter can hinder spikers. And vice versa; you can have a great setter giving the easiest tosses, but if the hitter completely sucks nothings gonna happen. Like Hinata in his first tournament. It’s a symbiotic relationship, and like Ukai realized, it can’t be one sided. And let’s also remember, this is Young Ukais first time as a coach, he is also learning himself. (And getting beat up lol) Also, some small clarification, Hinata and Kageyama have done normal quick attacks, where his eyes are open, and that’s been working okay. They used it in the matches with Nekoma and Seijo. But it’s going to be harder for him the higher levels they get to. That’s why this training with Coach Ukai is amazing. Hinata needs to learn how to make his own adjustments and think on his feet more in general. He’s below average with even this compared to the rest of the team, who have had more experience either currently in highschool or middle school. Like Kageyama mentioned, Hinata doesn’t exactly have much technique. He doesn’t even UNDERSTAND the fundamentals of how he’s attacking. So these things like timing, adjusting to other setters, being “one with the ball” aside from just smacking it blindly, are all helpful. I know you’re sad about the boys not talking….it breaks my heart too 😭BUT..think on what they were saying and doing this episode. Hinata said multiple times that Kageyamas amazing, and he has absolute faith he’d be able to adjust anything. And Kageyama…he asked his rival, the very person he looks up to as a setter, for advice. He humbled himself, he listened, and is now putting in this extra time and effort to change his toss technique. FOR Hinata. Not anyone else. Just Hinata. So they may not be speaking to each other right now, but the effort they’re putting in is speaking volumes.

about the Ushiwaka / Wakatoshi naming discussion - his full name is Ushijima Wakatoshi, with Ushiwaka being a widespread nickname that's basically just his first and last name smashed together, and most characters in the series either call him that or Ushijima. so either one works!

Hisoka

W React Haikyuu is a great anime for people who played any sport or anything competitive.

Gunta_Artes

Great analysis at the beginning! I love a reactor that pays so much attention to the story and can get very invested in it. Haikyuu!! is my favorite anime, and. you watching it makes it so entertaining to rewatch. Keep them coming!!

TheRealNemesis

This upload could not come soon enough. I really think you're one of the best people to react and watch this show up to this point. The depths you go in with your insights and analysis is soo cool to see.

DragonSinOfWrath

Id say we should call him Ushiwaka because thats the name they use most in the anime. Sometimes Ushijima or Wakatoshi is used too though P.S. After watching many different reactors for the last 3 years, your channel is the one I love to watch most right now, and the discussion at the beginning is a big reason why. You don't miss details, you clearly love these shows that we love, you dont miss details (or if you do chat points them out and you catch them then), you enjoy the OPs and EDs and dont skip them a lot of the time. And both you and this community are so wholesome.

Name drops should return soon as we make our way back to Tokyo. In the meantime, the debate between who "controls" the play is a very interesting one. Obviously Kageyama thinks it's the setter, but Grandpa Ukai and Oikawa claim that it's the spiker. It goes without saying that both are important and that context matters, but, personally, I actually side with Kageyama and I have a real life example in another sport. One of Japan's most iconic midfielders in soccer, Shinji Ono (selected to Japan's national team for 10 years), said that one of the best players he's ever played with was one of his teammates in high school. This teammate of his was also scouted, was selected to Japan's national youth team and went pro, but retired after 3 years because of his poor performance. Years later he was interviewed after Ono shouted him out as a player he admired. When the interviewer asked why his performance dipped, he "blamed" it on Ono. He said in high school, whenever he thought "this is where I want the ball," Ono was able to place it there perfectly. They were completely on the same wavelength on how to draw out a play. He admitted that he thought he was one of the best at soccer at the time, but realized when he went pro that the only reason he was "good" was because of Ono's superhuman ball control. He said, respectfully, that none of his professional teammates matched the accuracy that Ono had and he admitted that he wasn't good enough to cover that margin of error. Bringing it back to Haikyu, fortunately Hinata is realizing in his first year of high school that he needs to change his ways to improve and evolve so that he doesn't turn out like this no-name soccer player that Shinji Ono called a prodigy.

Mura_sakii_art

You mentioned ran and thinking of hinatas potential, ran started as a libero. He started with defence. Hinata never started with the basics, literally getting him to a basic level on every aspect of volleyball is sorely needed because he is legitimately the worst on the team if kageyama isnt on. Hinata can aim his regular quicks, meaning he can improve them and there are other techniques in spiking that he could also work on if he really doesnt wanna do any defensive work but he's trying to improve upon their already super human move out of pure resolve 😭

SilverFang95

They don't need to talk or look at each other. They are boys😂 as a man myself I understand. I guess you don't.

Ananth Varma

USHIjima WAKAtoshi = USHIWAKA so any of those names are alright. His Juniors use his last name as a sign of respect so Ushijima san, his friends would say wakatoshi and misc outsiders and media etc say Ushiwaka. I personally gravitate towards Wakatoshi xD

Jeffrey Eady

To me this whole episode is an example of why Kageyama was wrong in the last episode.

Sindri

Call him Ushijima. Ushijima Wakatoshi. UshiWaka is a nickname gets on his nerves when Oikawa calls him that for example 😂

fia

wait we can put pictures now

Hari Viswanathan akZNIpCfAg

I am sure someone explained it in the comments. I just call him "Japan" or "ushiwaka japan" as Hinata calls him

fia

long discussions are the bestt

Andranice Carrington-Davis

I wanted to thank you Flexie for always sharing ALL your thoughts. Being able to share your raw thoughts and then discuss how they evolve after taking time to process them, is something I wish more reactors did. It shows you are enjoying the show and paying attention to the themes. I'm so confident that this is going to be one of your favorite animes!

Nick

Kageyama is without a doubt Karasunos best player throughout the anime. Just a different level of skill.

ClusterDSA .

I wrote a whole paragraph about how Ushiwaka's comment about his team not getting weaker just because you watch them applies very specifically to Shiratorizawa in a way that isn't as true for other teams like Karasuno, and then realized the anime hasn't actually gone into what kind of team Shiratorizawa is and what their team does, so I'll save it for later when the anime gets around to telling you about them. But yeah, his comment is much more fitting for his team and how they play then other teams.

Joe Mac

I don't know if anyone mentioned down comment, but I believe that the although there have been several smaller volleyball players, I believe Hinata Shoyo mirrored Yuji Nishida from the JNT. I believe that he's relatively short to the sport (he's 187 cm), but a lot of people identify him as the real-lfie Hinata Shoyo.

That Guy

Yay great discussion! Super worth being on patreon!

Kiribukai

Flexie, your discussions and character analysis are always so spot on and I appreciate that you do that so much! You also always notice small details within the show as well. For example, I ALWAYS have to point out the pictures that Oikawa has of his nephew on his phone because I think that is such a cute and sweet character detail but I think you are the only reactor who noticed it right away! 🥰 Anyway, thanks again for reacting to this show! It would be so easy for you to get downcast because of everything that’s been going on (even with this stream!) but you constantly deliver top tier reactions to our favorite animes! 🧡

Irisviel

Kageyama is undoubtedly the best player in terms of skill in karasuno at the moment. Though he is lacking in aspects where Oikawa excels in, which this episode kinda show. Ushiwaka is coincidentally a "legend/urban legend/historic character" and the character ushijima wakatoshi blends into "ushiwaka" and that's why people call him that.

James B

Is that fairly common? I thought in Steins;Gate it was just something quirky about Mayushi.

MSJ

Its also a cool reference to Minamoto no Yoshitsune, 1 of the most well known samurai in Japan's history. His childhood name was Ushiwakamaru
