Episode 28: Father

Matthew

Uploading this 30min before I need to leave for work... it's like you're directly challenging me flexie

Patrick Jocel Sarabia

because YES!! Van Hoenheim and "Father" are TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE!! *wheeew* I've been wanting to SAY THAT since ep. 1!!! 🥴

Giulia Beonio

Now my main gripe with the last episode is that it’s clear even in the manga, that till now you are suppose to think that Hohenheim and the father are the exact same person (classic red herring), so what happens in this episode should be a plot twist (and I’m really happy that it still worked for you), but then why did they do the anime-only episode (27) like that?! Especially just before this episode? Like even if you don’t know what’s going on you have to think that something’s not right… in his mind there are two him-lookalike with different personalities! It always bothered me…

Silvanus2004

Great reaction, but there was a small scene after the ending song you missed Flexie.

ReyMed

Hey Flexie, there's an after-credits scene you missed in this one

Karatsuki

Yes Hohenheim and Father are 2 different "people" We see Hohenheim just outside of Central when Father disables alchemy and Hohenheim notices this This is also why I have an issue with the recap where they imo give irrefutable proof of them being different JUST before the actual reveal in the show BUT we are about to get into my favorite part of the show and I can't wait to see more The brainstorming is about to pop off

AttackRunRepeat

Fun fact! Theophrastus Bombast von Hohenheim, known as Paracelsus, was a Swiss physician and alchemist in the 1500's.

Russ Tan

I love this era of Ling/Greed. Greed 2 is by far my favorite homunculus.

Rannos Twentytwo

It's so nice to see everyone starting to get along 😊

Gustav

They showed Hohenheim in the mountains sensing when father turned off alchemy. So the episode was definitely showing us that they're at least 2 separate beings

m li

omg yes lmao, I was eagerly waiting for you to get to the father =/= hohenheim reveal!!

2026-10-09 03:00 Your stamina of him turning off the electricity was really appt. Its more like he turned off only 1 of the currents though. Think of their alchemy like DC power and Alkahestery as AC power. Different flows of similar energies and he just cut off the one he knew

I mean on a first watch through it can just be seen as two sides of the same person trying to fight it out internally.

Gpinko

Ah there's an end credits scene for this episode! These will be more frequent going forward, so just watch out for those. It's not a spoiler at this point to conclude that Father and Hohenheim are two different people, this episode confirmed it. Given Father's dialogue, and the scene at 9:36 where we see Hohenheim traveling on the mountainside, that was a present time reaction. As for WHAT is going on with that....you'll have to see 😎 Heyyyyy remember how you were sad that Greed was gone so soon....hee's baaacckkkk 😅 Of course that VA woudn't have had just 2-3 episodes of screentime. Great. But LING 😭

Giulia Beonio

Yeah… I don’t know… i’ve seen a lot of people watching that episode already in doubt about the father’s identity, Take that as confirmation, also compared to how the rest of the episode explores really well Hohenheim’s psychology through other characters from his life speaking to him I think the idea of a sort of darkness in him speaking through an evil version of himself looks a bit cheap compared to everything else. Just my opinion, though, I know a lot of people like that episode.

Giulia Beonio

Oh my… yes! Their decision to put the recap up episode done like they did, immediately before this one is diabolical, I hate it

JojoJack

You missed the post credit scene!

Kyle Storts

The dub had a awesome line for scar when he found out about the truth behind ishvall. "Your only salvation from my wrath will be damnation" both are great tho

Marvin Varnhorn

I think in the recap episode one can also argue that it was an alter ego without knowing hohenheim too much

Adrian Sørlie

Nice Scar!. Thats what i call getting a Headstart! xD

Maxter of puppets

22:20 Flexie please PLEASE Watch the dub bloopers when your done with the series lol those who know know

man, this episode is so good. welcome back greed! greeling (the fan name for greed in ling's body) is one of my favorite characters, so i'm excited you're finally being introduced to him. this episode has so much going on; these moments in the series, where a group of characters comes together and crucial information finally gets shared, are some of my favorites. they're always so satisfying

DGThunderer

You think maybe we could get Bradley back, but what would that accomplish? He's a soldier who's known nothing but his training his entire life. Ling has emotions, relationships, and passions, Bradley has nothing.

Scoola

Its not irrefutable proof its just a giant hint. You can pretty easily see it as an alter ego situation

KUR0KIJI

We finally got to my favorite character Greeling

KUR0KIJI

His friends call him Greeling

Shank.wu

Post credit scene episodes for your convenience: 6, 8, 28, 29, 30, 32, 33, 36, 40, 42, 43, 44, 46, 48, 49

snowie

Fun lil parallel now that we have Ling as our new Greed: Wrath as a human, was the 12th candidate before becoming a homunculus, whereas Ling Yao is the 12th prince in line to become emperor. Not to mention of course their discussion prior about the nature of kings. I really enjoy the dynamic between them. Anyhow, SO EXCITING TO BE AT THIS STAGE OF THE STORY.

Wyld89

I think this is the wrong episode to post this fact under. That name does not appear in this episode

Karatsuki

Yeah Bradley has been Wrath since he was born

Karatsuki

Why I said imo And the fact that you understand that even at best it is a giant hint should make you understand that it is basically spoiling the big suprise of this episode when nothing before that has suggested that they are 2 different people in the source material Genuinely the recap episode would habe been a perfect addition after the reveal though

FlexiejayAnime

It wouldn’t accomplish anything I was just pondering possibilities and certain limitations. My mind likes to run wild like that.

Nate

Bump

Illiterate Mochi

I’ve been waiting for this!! Here comes my second favorite character, Greeling!

Golladan

Maybe they thought they went too far in an earlier episode when they focused on Hohenheim while the homunculi were talking about Father.

Christopher Sanders

Dun dun dun Two fathers! well in a sense. oh a thought to amuse oneself with since it's never mentioned or looked into in the manga or anime when Father shuts down Alchemy you gotta wonder how many random experiments and or fixing/making projects using alchemy suddenly failed in the city? if at all did he shut it down in just the underground or the city? again never explored just a curiosity

Golladan

Her stamina?

Alex Hencher

This is an almost daily struggle for me. Its the horrible thing about opposite time zones. Keep it coming though, day or night, they're still the best reactions around.

Kanly

FMABH is a collection of beautiful moments swimming in the horror and dread of a world that wants to consume all hope and happiness... (just like our own world, but the monsters are different). The story has a tightness that makes you wonder if there's something or someone pulling the strings from above, out of sight, and the emotional rhythm is fantastic, it will make you cry and let you smile because you know the story has a internal and cohesive beauty that you know it won't let you down

Nick Lomakin

Tbh i miss hearing "Let it all out" before Flexi post-episode emotions xD

Buzzard

I love how Scar is blasting Father's face with decomposition energy waves, and Father is just like, " Hmm, how can you still be using alchemy. Very interesting."

Ryudo

You missed the after-credits scenes... :( These will be happening frequently, I mentioned it before on another episode, please be sure to check for them!

FlexiejayAnime

I have a list already it’s fine but thank you! I simply got too excited and forgot lol I already said I’ll be watching the credit scene in the next reaction for this ep ☺️

Ori Kira

This is a great episode. a lot of info revealed in this episode but welcome to FMAB where answering one question you have opens the doors to 10 more. I Love how Scar just outright believes the Elrics 😊 and his speech is so damn good, finding out the truth is a major moment for him as a character.

Malachi Hough

Woot! 2 episodes this week you rock Flexie! more FMAB. got allot of stuff happening over the next few episodes, you'll enjoy it.

Karatsuki

This IS actually exlpored later in the show

Karatsuki

Problem is even with that it would be hinting that they are not the same Aka spoiling something that the source material keeps HIDDEN up until this episode/chapter Either way it is clearly diminishing the suprise of this episode Now imagine if the recap was played AFTER this episode It would be perfect to explore the differences between the 2

Nate

Dead on, but I'd say the monsters aren't different in the sense that the Sins are an aggregate of the torment of human souls so vast, that they are essentially personified in FMAB but are in the exact same business in our world; wrath is the head of the military, envy creates strife and division by shapeshifting to create conflict so we dont see masterminds up top, gluttony consumes people, lust destroys good men, etc. The show is really profound in how it dissects the nature of good and evil through interaction with humanity, statecraft, and history. How both see and interact with the world and eachother.

Nate

Agreed but I think it works better when you've watched the English VA's/translation all the way through since it plays on familiar lines that are written differently (better imo) in the Eng translation.

catpuccino

Ling becoming Greed is definitely one of the most interesting character development and is really nice to see how it plays out

Tyler

Great reaction as always! I love your analysis at the end when you were talking about "well, you can't have it all", when that's exactly what Ling believes. He wants it all. He is greedy. And so him being literally consumed by Greed is absolutely fitting in so many ways. It also reflects some of the bigger themes of the series, of what we will reach out for and seize for the sake of what's important to us, consequences be damned. Ed and Al did the same with their mother, grabbing onto forces they didn't understand to try to remake a world that made sense to them. Envy is horrible, but is one of the best written characters in the series with the most penetrating lines. "As soon as you gain a great power, you get carried away with it, not even knowing what it is." It's what we always do. Most of the heroes we praise and love do it all the time (Asta, swinging around swords he doesn't understand, is an interesting example of this). Believing we can save/change the world is, fundamentally, greedy. But also aspirational and inspirational. FMA always pushes you into the grey, because that's where we usually exist, and I love it. The mysteries continue! I do not wish for your mind right now with all the Father/Father stuff. Not even half way there yet! So much more of this to come.

Maxter of puppets

I think she mention she re watches it dub on her own not sure tho

Christopher Sanders

was it? lol seems I've forgotten some things oh well thanks for correcting me!

Karatsuki

The fact is that most of Hohenheims character in that episode is pulled from future knowledge You CANNOT in good faith say that it 'does not spoil' things that are yet to be shown This is exactly the same argument as used for openings spoiling things Just because a first time watcher doesn't realize the things in the openings are spoilers due to missing context doesn't mean they aren't still spoilers Some are fine with it others are not I for one certainly think that Hohenheims character is best left to be explained when it actually is in the original source material

Karatsuki

Yeah both manga and anime talk about it in the near future

Sakamoto Plays

What’s wild to me about FMA’s pacing is that the action and plot move so fluidly together - one never waits for the other because they are always interwoven. Like the animation here is so good, but the story moves so quickly that sometimes I don’t even realize how good it really is.

Paweł Kapusta

I love the fact you enjoy the show Flexie, anime hardly ever gets better than that. I can think of only one show that can compete to top FMAB, and its AoT...

Sakamoto Plays

26:35 - This really is, “…but you can’t have everything.” The Anime 😂😂😂😂😂😂

andrew haynberg

Is it me or are these subtitles different. The line where scar is talking to father is totally changed. It used to be, "NO. You don't deserve to stand by God, alongside my fallen brothers! Your only solace from my wrath will be DAMNATION!". What gives.

andrew haynberg

I really thought the sub version had the same exact line, but maybe there's different sub versions.
