Always in the same boat waiting for it in excitement to see what happened next

Gaoshun in the corner had me SCREAMING! 🤣

I saw this in a comment. The bird perched there in the scene where Mao Mao sings a lullaby at the end is called a cuckoo. They say this bird cries out of longing for its mate, and apparently, it doesn’t raise its own young—could that be a reference to Mao Mao’s mom? 😭 By the way, there’s also a flower called a cuckoo, and its symbolic meanings are “yours forever,” “hidden intentions,” and “shy.” Ah, I always overthink things, lol. But I wanted to share this with you! 😋

Oh Jinshi, you have to be specific with Maomao 😂😂😂Chou-u wearing all those padded jackets reminds me of a particular scene from Friends lol

TaterGator

If I caught it right, there's an extra sweet thing for the multiple layers it adds. But the song Maomao sings seems like the same one her mom was always singing. Sweet showing how even if it's partly from the trauma of what happened in her infancy, but also how the song is still meaningful to her. As well as her decision that of any song she might know, that is the one she chose to sing to Jinshi.

Just a nice and subtle detail that could be forgotten unless you binged through the whole show at once, the lullaby Maomao sings is the song her mom sang in her parents’ backstory episode and S1 and a song she still sang as she was very sick.

Benjamin Sones

Fun fact: the earliest human use of asbestos dates back to the Stone Age.

AttackRunRepeat

It may be the only one she ever heard. The courtesans just left her to cry while they did their jobs. Maybe all she knows is the lullaby her mother sang. Maomao probably heard it through the cracks of doors left ajar.

TaterGator

I thought that might be a reason too, but I wasnt sure since I would think working in the brothel she might've heard other songs she could've used. Even if not because she heard courtesans singing to their customers through the doors, at least because of the musical practicing they do trying to become better/more desirable courtesans. But you could absolutely be correct that it is actually just the only one she knows.

Sukramus

I think at this point Maomao has to have some feelings for Jinshi, but she ignores it because she don't want to be involved in the politics.

Murabito_A

I remember in season two when Sazen was running away with his books, there was a scene where he saw something glowing in the grass. I guess that was the hairpin Mao Mao gave Loulan. Then Sazen saved Loulan from a serious fall. I guess that's why he's so poor now.

Alejandro Calzetta

I think Pairin is telling her to accept that she is in love. She is going out of her way to make Jinshi confortable, she worries, single to him (!) after all. That's how I see it. Lovely reaction as always!

Alex Hencher

I think she suppresses it because its what she's always done. Her indifference is her armor, and it takes a lot of willpower to open yourself up and take the armor off. No matter how much good might come from it, it feels easier and safer to just keep things the way they are.

Alex Hencher

Love Maomaos little science tips. To add to it for the modern people, you can boil water in a paper cup, like a Dixie cup, or anything similar. It will burn down to the level of the water and then stop. You might get ash in the water, but it would be safe to drink. I can remember one of my survival instructors getting $5 from each of us in the class because we flatly refused to believe he could boil water in a paper cup.

Alex Hencher

The hooded figure is in the north, where the famine from the locusts is. I also have a feeling that the hooded girl is gonna be the heavenly maiden from the story. Just guessing, but she's either trying to sieze control over the countryside by feeding the hungry, or the food summons the locusts...?

Paweł Wiśniewski

Must be a coincidence that the snake bitting the poppy in the opening and the girl spreading unknown substance have the same colors... thinking that she's giving people opium just based on that would be pure conjecture.

Alderanex

I thought it was more in the sense of Maomao becoming a courtesan. Those care for their customers as if they were lovers too. And as we know, sometimes they even fall in love and get bought out (= profit for gram, and with the Jinshi probably a healthy one). Pairin and the other big sisters care for Maomao, but also for the Verdigris house. Maybe it was part of both.

Alejandro Calzetta

Could be, but I think they know her too well to know she doesn't want to become a courtesan. What she is doing fot Jinshi is vvery atypical for her. But maybe you are right, dunno

Gaoshun is the real MVP of this show 💀

I think the reason this episode felt different in terms of Jinshi and Maomao is that this is one of the only times (maybe THE only) we have seen them interact and there is virtually NO teasing or flirting from either one. They were talking to each other as caring equals. They didn't really argue, they didn't purposefully try to make the other uncomfortable. It was one of the only 'adult' conversations that have had on screen. I'm so glad that you noticed how Maomao put her hand on Jinshi;s shoulder as she was singing to him. I saw that and to me it really shows that she wants the connection with him and wants to comfort him. This show is just so good... Thank you Flexie. See you on some other vid soon!

Sindri

Nothing in life will ever be easy after openly admitting affection towards someone of royal lineage. Especially somebody who clearly is of much higher importance to the Imperial royal line than anybody would imagine. Maomao is likely aware of how short her lifespan is likely to be if she allows herself to get swept up in that romance.

2026-10-12 01:00 They are staying in the same place Loumen and Maomao always lived in, they are renting the place, the farmland and their store within the verdigris house from Grams (well she is just the manager, the actual owner is the guy that we saw last episode).

i totally got the same feeling as you , i thought it was just me, but yeah i did get a weird feeling with those two in this EP especially Jinshi, but it could be just because Jinshi looked too tired to tease MaoMao like usual or attempt anything at that moment, and MaoMAo was too concerned about his health that she didn't react as she usually does around him, plus i like to assume that she is warming up to him considering the way she greeted them at first.

Han_Ichi_Ruki@

I really really like that stare down they had at the end, before Jinshi talked MaoMao into singing a lullaby for him, i think the look he gave her was like saying "i know you know that i have feelings for you, so why don't you just accept it", and the look she responded with was like saying "i know that you know that i know that you have feelings for me, but i can't respond or knowledge it, so give it up", that's what i got from that stare down anyway, but i don't know. i just really love their dynamic, but i still think that she is still showing him at least some affection by worrying for him like that and taking care of him, so there is that at least.

Karatsuki

Kind of shocked actually how many people who react to this didn't know about asbestos being used for fireproof clothing But yes this series is great because you can learn something new every time you watch it
