Flexie Girl Good to see you in great health I prayed to GOD for you to get better. YAY Apothecary Diaries LET'S GO!!!

Even though at times Maomao seems to be very... unempathetic to the point where it even makes me a bit uncomfortable (threatening to selling off a child to be an escort) I grew to appreciate how much this period drama does not romanticize anything. Maomao especially. She just explains how it is in reality and makes people face the music before they end up somewhere in the ditch sweet-talked into false promises instead of fighting for themselves. When she sees the determination of the girl, she knows she has what it takes to make it and just needs to keep that motivation so then she points her into the direction that might seem bad to today's standard, but that gives the best chance of a somewhat comfortable life to a beggar in these times. Really cool to see from a lense of the period context. Also she has 0 patience and empathy for the absentee father most likely due to how she sees her own biological father. Although Lakan rules, he is just a weirdo, but still.

The older sister also suspected that with their mother gone the time would eventually come where what they earn by begging isn't enough for their father and he forces them to become streetwalkers. so they would become sexworkers either way. But as Streetwalkers instead of a high-class establishment, with good conditions, security and vetted customers, they would have to get their own customers on the street with no one protecting them, while their father continues to gamble away their earnings. So just her becoming a courtesan at the Verdigris house and both of them being taken care off for that is an improvement with no caveats in her mind.

I feel like Jinshi just became more like an adult passing that awkward phase of being a teenager struggling with his feelings and awkwardness, along with all the added responsibilities he had to deal with now, just made him step up and assume his "rightful role" so he had to drop the act of a sweet talking eunuch and that's why he seems more serious with a deeper tone to his voice, and you will understand further down the line in later EP's of this season why he is the way he is now. Also i agree with you MaoMao just doesn't want to entangle herself in further political problems that's why she is denying Jinshi so much, on top of the fact that she knows if she wanted to give in to Jinshi's pursuing of her, she will have to be of higher class and to do that she will have to take on her real family's name the LA clan, and we all know she doesn't want to associate herself with her real father, so that's one more reason to add to the pill of reasons she had to convince herself of not pursuing anything with Jinshi, BUT that still doesn't mean that she doesn't care about him, IN FACT in my opinion i think she cares about him more than let's on, she actually acts so familiar with him more than anyone else, i feel like she constantly builds walls between her and people around her, and she only let's those walls down when she is with people she deems worthy of being comfortable with just like she does with Jinshi but that is just my opinion. Also, regarding the father of those two girls i think he can actually work and find work, or at least if not, then he shouldn't make life harder on his children by gambling their hard earned money away, at least make an effort if nothing else, but he didn't which makes him the worst father, that's the way i see it anyway.

That Pairin scene is too much 🤣🤣🤣 Basen certainly thought so 😉😏

What jarred me the most was when the dad broke down in tears and the rest of the townspeople just ignored him and went back to their daily business after the spectacle was over. I suppose it's proof that things like that are common occurrences in that part of town.

Maomao in this episode very much is a result of her times. And for two beggar girls to become courtesans in a respected house is a very decent option. Yes, they are escorts. But the show is heavily inspired by Ancient China, and courtesans in those times also meant playing music, reciting poetry, being entertaining and playing games. That meant education, a safer environment in a respectable house and also at least a bit of choice. Of course it wasnt free choice, but two girls on the streets would end up in much worse positions. In time courtesans could make enough money to become independent, leave the field and buy and own their own property and so on. Doesnt mean its easy or nice, but it is a decent reflection of the vague time period that influences the show and reflects the reality women had to face.

I'm glad you're starting to feel better! Make sure to get plenty of sleep and rest. When Mao Mao said she was going to sell her younger sister, it felt like she was either testing her older sister or she was serious. I couldn’t tell… but since she was born to a father like that back in those days, I guess she had no other choice. It’s so sad. It was a time when it was really hard for women and girls to find work. That father should be the one doing it, honestly! 😤 And to be honest, I couldn’t help but think that Mao Mao was actually a bit more fortunate than most. But she’s someone who knows how tough the world can be, isn’t she? She’s probably seen a lot… 😢

Plus Granny isn't as terrible as they make her out to be. Profit might be what she lives her life by, but she's also been shown to be pretty gracious when the need arises. She's running a business, and can't afford to be seen as charitable, plus if the business fails she can't look after her brood. But when she sees the right opportunity she looks after the weak, or when she can be assured that no one will know, like with Maomao's mom, and the way she looks after Maomao. She threatens to sell her off, or press her into service, but I don’t know how much is an act. You have to provide her with some worth, but past that she viciously defends her brood.

I like the way Jinshi has changed now that the secret is out. He's more serious and straightforward. I think it suits him better. Poor Basen had to beat a hasty retreat with Pairin on the prowl.🤭
