Little extra background on this story. "Monsters" was a one shot manga that Oda wrote for Shonen Jump in 1994. So this story is actually older than One Piece. Ryuma was probably at least partially the basis for Zoro's character. So the passing of the sword has that extra layer of significance.

As a fun fact this story was made even before One Piece. Is part of a one shot call Monsters that Oda did. About the "King" thing. Yes, he was that king. He basically was the strongest swordsman of his time. What Zoro fought was a not even close in power to what real Ryuma was capable of when alive.

I love that Ryuma said he would love to fight "The King," because he heard he has the heart of a warrior. Which is probably something he said to the first few people he saved, and so people started calling him "The King, the Swordsman with the heart of a warrior." But the guy at the end says, "though I doubt he's aware of it," meaning he doesn't know De King is referring to him. So he wants to fight this King guy because he's just like him....because he is him

I know someone has brought up Monsters, the one shot manga Oda wrote before One Piece, but there is a neat piece of trivia about the prototype(s) for Monster. Ryuma was originally created for a one-shot manga called Great Swordsmen: Samurai vs. Knight. While we don't know much about it compared to the finally version of Monsters, we do have some notes that Oda created Ryuma with a character called Kaede Rukawa in mind. He is a secondary character from a sport shonen called Slam Dunk, but he originated from its prototype work, Kaeda Purple, as its main protagonist. So, Oda wrote Ryuma to be the protagonist of the one-shot so that he could make him a secondary character is a future, more fleshed-out work. It is more likely than not that Ryuma was a prototype Zoro, which is really neat.

Yes you can see that Ryuma was a prototype for both Zoro and Luffy's designs and feel

The subtitle says, “A true swordsman in mind and body.” Zoro meant that a swordsman can only unleash his full potential when both mind and body are united. Without both, he cannot fight at his full strength. Ryuma was not someone whose mind could be controlled by Moria.

I love how Ryuma was such an amazing blueprint for anime character but Oda went.. "nop, not good enough, let's split him into Luffy and Zoro and let's make both of them even better Sometimes I feel like there is even a bit of Sanji in there.

Technically speaking, it is an ONA, not an OVA. "Monsters" was released worldwide on streaming platforms on January 2024. Furthermore, it was not produced by TOEI.

Also, if Ryuuma was actually alive there's no way Zoro would have won that fight as he is now. Ryuuma's zombie was inhabited by Brook's shadow and is therefor limited to Brook's techniques. They're quite amazing in their own right but they lack the destructive force Ryuma showcased in this OVA. Brook uses precision and speed to overwhelm his opponents before they know what even happened. It's very different from Zoro and Ryuuma who used similar styles.

Knowing about Zoro's family tree is not a spoiler. Eiichiro Oda revealed the entire lineage in the SBS Q&A section of Volume 105, completely outside the main story of the manga or anime.

fun fact Ryuma is the known as the God of the Blade and the strongest swordsman to ever live, we´re lucky the zombie is limited to Brooks power otherwise Zoro wouldn´t stand a chance at this point in the story
