Jason’s body was a pincushion for blood vines, strung up so thoroughly that he couldn’t move. Gerling walked closer, looking at him in confusion.

“You didn’t dodge. You could have avoided that.”

“Yeah,” Jason said, “but what would be the point? We fight, you lose, and while you’re growing a new body, all the vines I messed up explode and new ones grow. That’s what McKean wanted. To show that I can throw everything I’ve got at you and his creepy gardening project, and it won’t be enough.”

“So, you gave up?”

“No, Jack. I’m going to kill you today.”

“You can’t kill me, Asano.”

“Did Simon tell you that? He probably believed it, to be fair. But he’s wrong about a lot of things, and that’s one of them. I am going to kill you, and not just for revenge. I’m not going to say that you killing my brother, my girlfriend and my mate doesn’t mean anything. Of course it does. I want you dead, Jack, and I want to be the one that killed you. But, at the end of the day, you’re a monster, and I’m the guy who fights monsters.”

“You talk big for a man strung up like a butcher’s carcass.”

“Yeah, well, my friend Clive told me I had to, and he’s generally right about these things. Like I said, there’s no point fighting McKean’s big vine the regular way. Your boss keeps pumping cosmic power into it, and I can’t fight that like a normal essence user. It’s why he thinks he can win. Thing is, Jack, I’m not a normal essence user. The same way McKean uses the vine, and you for that matter, I’m using this body. It isn’t me; it’s just a tool. Simon thinks that he’s found some infinite power source, but he doesn’t even realise what he’s tapped into.”

“You have no idea what power I’m calling upon,” McKean’s voice boomed through the room.

“Actually, Simon, you’re the one who doesn’t get it. That power you’re using? That’s my power. The conduit it’s coming through? I built it, with my friend Clive. And this monologue? It bought me the time to tap into that power, through these vines Gerling generously hooked me up to. Now I have a direct line to use that power for myself.”

“WHAT?” McKean bellowed.

***

General Mills was watching the live feed that McKean was still broadcasting from under the castle. He turned as his own shadow rose from the floor to turn into Jason Asano’s familiar.

“My apologies, General Mills, but the cloud ship may experience some turbulence over the next few minutes. Mr Asano is going to be exerting the influence of his true self, and he needs the cloud ship as a vessel. If he used his avatar, it would be destroyed immediately. All functionality as a control centre should go uninterrupted, but your people may be subjected to an echo of Mr Asano’s aura.”

“We’ve felt his aura before.”

“No, General Mills. You’ve experienced a facsimile of his aura, but not the real thing. Mr Asano’s prime avatar does not contain his soul, and therefore cannot use his true aura. This cloud vessel is one of Mr Asano’s spiritual domains, and he is going to project his true aura through it.”

“Why?”

“Because his prime avatar’s false aura is insufficient to drag a castle out of the ground.”

***

At Gerling’s direction, power flooded through the vines and into Jason’s body. Gerling was connected to the blood vine through roots growing out of his arms and legs, digging through the rubble. He directed more and more power into Jason, whose body was blasted apart by explosions. Limbs flew off and his head detonated, only to regrow in an instant.

“I WILL DESTROY YOU!” McKean screamed, only to be met with Jason’s laughter. “Even your body can’t keep this up, Asano!”

“I think you’ll find it can, Simon. If you want to see what it takes to truly overwhelm this avatar, let me show you what vast cosmic power truly looks like.”

An aura descended on the chamber like the waking of a nightmare god. The mere presence of it shook the walls and stirred the rubble. Its ineffable vastness left Gerling’s eyes wide and gaze blank, his mind shutting down from the domineering force pressing upon it.  The roots connecting him to the blood vine snapped and he fell to his knees, trembling and sobbing. Across the entire planet, every person with essence powers saw the same thing.

The pounding noise of hard rock was not the only thing to blast out of the cloud ship and into the valley below. A tyrannical aura reached out like an invisible hand to wrench at the earth. The castle rumbled and shook as earthquake forces tore rents in the ground. Rooves fractured and centuries-old brick crumbled. The entire castle and the land it stood on were dragged into the air, as if plucked up by some unseen deity.

An entire column of earth was ripped up as the castle rose into the air. Bedrock, riddled with the steel and concrete of McKean’s underground complex, was pulled into the air. Thick roots of the blood vine were ripped away, their torn ends dripping red.

Finally, the castle and the column of rock, steel and vines attached to it were dragged clear of the ground. A plume of dust and dirt rushed out of the resulting chasm to spread across the countryside. After floating in the air for a moment, the hovering mass went flying as the invisible power tossed it casually aside. The resulting crash shook the ground, the thunderous sound of it drowning out the music still blasting from the cloud ship.

***

The newly created shaft dug deep into the ground, ending in what had once been the dome chamber where Jason and Gerling had fought. The dust had cleared, drawn up and out of the shaft. From above came daylight, with the sun directly overhead in a clear blue sky. As the rumble of the crashing castle faded, sounds of music echoed down as well.

The chamber had already been strewn with rubble, and now there was even more. Jason was still suspended on taut vines sticking out of the walls, now bathed in sunlight from on high. Gerling was still on his knees, making babbling sounds. He’d been struck by falling concrete and steel but showed no indication of noticing.

Within his hood, Jason’s eyes glowed brighter, shifting from blue and orange to ghostly white. Ethereal flames of the same colour started burning their way out of his body, burning up flesh that, this time, did not grow back. Holes appeared across his torso and limbs, ghost fire crawling out to cover his body. The vines jabbing into him tried to yank themselves free, as if scared of the flames. Shadow arms emerged from the rubble to hold them in place.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” McKean’s voice screamed. “HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS? WHAT IS THAT MUSIC?”

Jason didn’t respond. His avatar had been almost entirely consumed, more person-shaped flame left than body. The last remnants burned away and the flames expanded out as a dark shape grew within them, taking on the form of a bird. The bird grew larger, black as the void of space. Motes of silver starlight appeared inside it as the outside continued to be wreathed in ghost fire. It grew larger and larger, until its wingspan was almost too great for the shaft.

The vines still plunged into it flailed madly, as if desperate for escape. They remained trapped as white flames crawled along them, following to where they emerged from the walls and floor of the chamber, seeking out the blood root vine still buried behind them.

Clive and his team didn’t portal directly into the command centre, but a dedicated room close by.

“Are we just going to leave all those researchers down there?” Estella asked.

“I don’t think they’re going to move,” Sophie said. “Not with the battle taking place over their heads. And if something happens to them, I won’t be crying myself to sleep.”

“We can round them up when this is all over,” Belinda said.

Belinda, Estella and Sophie made their way to a monitor room where various military and civilian brass were watching events, while Clive and Farrah headed for the command room. Inside they found an array of soldiers looking less than well, ranging from pale to hunched over in their seats. Several Shade bodies were moving around, distributing potion vials.

“What are those?” Farrah asked.

“Mind breeze potions,” Shade said. “They clear the head and enhance mental fortitude.”

“Jory came up with them,” Clive said. “To help people who don’t handle portal travel well, originally, but it would help handle Jason’s aura. Fortunately, it’s not too strong inside the cloud ship.”

“This counts as not too strong?” Michael Mills asked, turning from the monitor where he was observing.

“Trust me that you’re better off in here,” Farrah told him. “You do not want to catch the full force of his aura when he’s using it as a weapon. It’s unnerving enough when he’s using it as a shield.”

“Sir!” one of the operations staff called out. “We’re getting reports of anomalies with the reviving vampires. There’s something wrong with their regeneration.”

“That’s what I wanted to hear,” Michael said. “Where’s that coming in from?”

“The theatres closest to us, sir. Spain and Italy.”

“It’s taking effect quickly,” Clive said. “That’s good, but what exactly is happening to the vampires?”

“Reports are still coming in,” the operator said, “but it looks like they’re just exploding. If the vines try to heal them, it does even more damage instead.”

She continued reading information as it scrolled quickly down her screen.

“Sir, I would recommend issuing a warning. Those pods that form to regrow a full body are basically bombs. Our people are seeing casualties.”

“Comms,” Michael said. “Get that report from the lieutenant and signal all units with the details.”

“Yes, sir.”

Michael glanced at Farrah and Clive.

“Put the McKean feed up on the main screen please.”

A moment later, a massive bird appeared on the screen, made of darkness and filled with motes of starlight. Its entire body was limned with ghostly fire.

“We were a little distracted with the falling over and vomiting,” Michael told Farrah and Clive. “Can either of you tell me what is going on down there?”

***

The ghost fire phoenix flared with blinding light and then was gone. In its place was Jason’s prime avatar, restored to its normal state. His cloak was absent and his body was coated in a thick layer of blood that congealed and dried into his usual combat robes. His eyes, still blazing with ghostly flames, set on the cowering Jack Gerling.

The power of Jason’s true aura had been withdrawn, once more contained to his astral kingdom. Sanity returned to Gerling’s eyes, but fear that would never leave was carved into them. Jason slowly walked toward him and he scrambled to get away. Shadow arms reached out from the rubble to pin him down and soon he found himself kneeling before Jason.

Jason looked down at Gerling who, of all McKean’s minions, was the one most closely bound to the blood root vine. Jason could sense the volatile power of raw magic coursing through him, threatening to tear him apart. Gerling looked up at Jason, no defiance left.

“I told you, Jack,” Jason said softly.

He reached out, gently touching a fingertip to Gerling’s forehead. Gerling explosively liquified, erupting away from Jason to paint a red cone on the rubble. The white fire in Jason’s eyes dimmed and they returned to their normal blue and orange.

Jason looked up. The sun had been blocked out by the cloud ship floating over the hole, and the music was echoing loudly down the shaft.

“It’s not a bad trick, Simon. You had cosmic power on tap, so using it to create a proto-astral space as a safe room was a clever idea. But proto-spaces are unstable at the best of times, and yours just got a dose of unmitigated chaos. You need to come out, or you’ll die when it collapses on you.”

McKean’s response was broadcast through the room, but it was breaking up like a bad radio signal.

“How did you do this?”

“I did tell you the power was mine. I just wasn’t using it because I’ve got that kind of power shooting out of me like last night’s curry. That doesn’t mean you get to wave it around like you’re a toddler with a chainsaw. Now your toys are broken, but people are still out there dying because you couldn’t tolerate that I exist. Now I find that my tolerance for your existence is running short. That being said, and putting aside everything you’ve done, you’re a brilliant man. The Earth is going to need people like you, and sooner than I’d like. For that reason, and despite my immense distaste for the prospect of you living past the next few minutes, if you get out here and come along quietly, we can discuss getting you the Nazi scientist deal. But if I have to go in there and get you, I’m going to have a satisfying day, and you’re going to have your last one.”

“I’m not surprised that you noticed my astral space. I know that you have a power that will let you walk right in, regardless of what traps and seals I’ve placed on the aperture, so I’m coming out.”

A few moments later, a portal appeared in the air. It was a round, shimmering plane of energy, twitchy and unstable. Simon McKean walked out, in jeans and a button-down shirt with a satchel slung across his shoulder. He looked Jason square in the eye.

“Here we are, face to face,” Jason said. “Is it everything you hoped for?”

“Can you at least shut off that idiot music?”

“You wanted power, McKean. Instead of getting a bunch of people killed, you could have just cranked out some Acca Dacca. There’s not much on Earth more powerful than that.”

“You really are an idiot, aren’t you? Which works out for me, as it happens. You see, there is something about proto-spaces that you seem to have forgotten, Asano. Which is a little embarrassing for you, given how many you dealt with, back in the day.”

“Oh? And what’s that?”

“That they accumulate monsters. And when that proto-space collapses, those monsters become a monster wave.”

A magical sphere sprang into place around McKean as the portal behind him shuddered before imploding into nothingness.

“Normally,” McKean said, “it would take time for the space to collapse and the monsters to manifest. I managed to accelerate the process, using that power you’re so insistent is yours. Goodbye, Asano. Enjoy the monsters.”

Jason’s aura flooded down the shaft from the cloud ship hovering over it. McKean winced as it struck him.

“Why didn’t…” he muttered, and pulled a stone slate the size of a computer tablet from his satchel. He traced the magical diagram engraved on it and he flickered in and out of existence for a moment, before solidifying again.

“See that cloud ship up there? That’s one of my domains, and I can extend its influence a little, enough to reach down here. And in my domain, you don’t teleport unless I allow it.”

Jason moved his head to gesture behind McKean. Simon turned to see an expanding vortex of rainbow light where the portal had been. He scrambled away, stumbling on the rubble.

“Nazi scientist deal, Simon. Last chance.”

“Fuck you, Asano.”

Jason looked up. The cloud ship was an inverted pyramid, with a giant eye on each side. All four eyes were closed, until Jason tilted his head and one of them opened. Blue and orange light filled the shaft like floodwater. McKean fell to the ground and rolled into a sitting position. He watched as the light started disintegrating the rubble, dissolving magically reinforced steel and concrete like aspirin in a glass of water. He felt the shield around him tremble. He looked at Asano, now standing over him, unaffected by the beam.

Behind Asano, light from the still-expanding rainbow vortex clashed with the light from the cloud ship. Monsters were spilling out of the vortex, only to be swiftly annihilated by the energy filling the shaft.

“That’s quite a shield, Simon. Did you make that? You truly are a waste of potential. Unfortunately for you, this weapon is designed to breach shields the size of a city. When yours breaks, it’ll be all over. Do you have any last words?”

“Asano, you can kill me, but you’ve still lost.”

“Is that so?”

“Your grip on this planet relies on one thing: people believing that you’re invincible. I may have lost this fight, but I showed the world that a fight is possible, and that’s all they needed. Humanity won’t lie down for a tyrant. Not if there’s even a chance of rising up. I showed them that a chance does exist, and they will seize it. It might take generations, but humanity will rebel against you Asano, until they finally find a way to destroy you.”

Jason sighed.

“It would be nice if we had that kind of time. Goodbye, Simon.”

The beam surged and the shield broke. Simon’s body was disintegrated before he could feel the pain.

The music stopped.

Thank u for the story

MentalLogic

Ugghh for a smart guy he really was a stupid blinkered moron

Ben Maes

Jesus, what a chapter.

Unwillingmainer

I see he did go for a godly demonstration of his power. Simon may be right that Earth may try and rebel against him, but after watching a almost god smite a castle, it may take a good long time. Long enough to get through the next trial I would think.

NicN

Tftc

Redbevrd

Thanks shirt!

Nick

Thanks for the chapter! Simon still didn't understand that the only thing he was close to destroying was everything he was trying to protect, it's a little tragic in the end. Also just realized that the chapter title is a spoiler for Simon's decision to give Jason a very satisfying day.

Chuck Haeberle

Every time I read the General's name I feel like I need to pour myself a bowl of cereal. And then I giggle a little.

Matthew Wilmsmeyer

So glad he didn't get the Nazi Scientist deal. Not sure how he deluded himself into thinking he proved anything, but hey, he managed to believe he was doing the right thing in the first place, so anything is possible.

Stephen

This chapter was immensely satisfying.

PreZ

Satisfying. With no cliffhanger. A rare treat indeed.

Andrew P

It's funny, as i get the impression Jason intends to step back and go exploring the cosmos the moment things on Earth are stabilized.

David Harshman

It's not a spoiler if you don't get spoiled. It's just foreshadowing, then.

Danyo

oh yeah, damn. Damn Boi. DAMN BOY HE THICC BOI. THAT'S A THICC ASS BOI DAMN, ba Baaaa

Captain the Red Beard

Man. I keep trying to hit the next chapter button but it's not working...............

Andrew

Except, it wasn't really even a fight once Jason actually got serious? Simon is just full of shit about that part. All he really showed was that if you make Jason take you seriously by force, that's your last day alive.

Isaac Scharff

That's just how it is with bigots. They're blinded by their hatred of the other

John Durrett

Tyftc. Now we just need the rest of the blood vines killed off.

Josh A

Excellent chapter. Shows Jason's growth with his willingness to still offer an olive branch

MasterEnvi

I really don't think Simon showed what he intended. He believes that the fight he and Jack put up against Jason represents a capability for humanity as a whole to stand above someone like Jason or the other Astral Kings/Transcendent Beings. Instead, all he really showed was that it wasn't a matter of *if* someone like Jason won, it was just a matter of how much effort they had to put in to pull it off. All of humanity on Earth, from everything we've seen, wouldn't have been able to beat Jack/Simon. Instead, it took someone beyond that level of strength to succeed. Not the message he probably wanted to go for I'd think. Great chapter as always!

Darth Bob

Liquid jelly that was still too good for the bastard Bravo, bravo encore encore standing ovation thank you Shirt

Timothy

O.M.F.G. Shirt. Now this, THIS is a GREAT chapter. Gerling getting the death touch and Simon disintegrated and still the band plays on!. TYFTGC!!!

Jules Deathwish

If American politics has shown us anything over the past 10 years. It's that idiots are going to believe whatever they want to, no matter how much evidence exists of they're being wrong.

Nick

Normally, yes, but if you read the title then Jason's ultimatum is already decided.

Tom Roe

Phenomenal chapter, ty!

Nick

Nah, he's pretty much established that once earth is set he's off into the next big fight. This was his taking things casual, he's been on earth for 10 years just boppin around

Parker Bond

Jason Asano, dragger of castles with aura

Jeff

Woah what a chapter! I totally forgot about the ghost fire.

blucube 14

Thanks for the chapter!

Abdulaziz ALRumaih

Just finished the chapter And I’m unsure how Simon thinks he showed earth they can fight Jason He basically got swatted as a bug And plus the system message would have made all of them shit their pants

the one who reads

I don't speak much on her but I have to say this if you hear someone say this “Because his prime avatar’s false aura is insufficient to drag a castle out of the ground.” That it should throw up big red warning signs that what you understand it's just a focum point of the truth behind it

Samuel Britt

There are few things more dangerous than someone who believes incorrectly that their cause is worth any sacrifice. Unfortunately for McKean, one of those is VAST COSMIC POWER. Good thing Jason got that shirt.

Malcolm

Simon really is an idiot

Thorias

I like the sound of rooves better then roofs. Is that an Australian thing?

Parker Bond

I was worried he was going to take it and then try and betray again later

GREAT4040

Surely the guy that everyone on earth now definitively knows is connected to the system can be beaten after that stunt. Nothing weird about drawing that conclusion

RonGAR

Good chapter, but offering McKean a deal? Was dumb. Especially since you couldn't trust he wouldn't sabotage or betray you later, just like the LAST time he got in power. Even inviting him into Jason's soul could be dangerous. He is smart enough to eventually find a weakness. ------- Music selection is hella out of date.

Ligeia

That was great! But no weekend-before-a-week- off cliffhanger, Shirt? You're spoiling us! 😆

Vodyinoi

I assume that everyone promptly brought up AC/DC Thunderstruck to play in the background while reading this chapter, as is only proper.

mhaj58

The curse of intelligence; you can be the smartest person in the world so many times before you inevitably meet someone smarter. Clive and Lindy and Farrah understood that soon enough to accept the reality that Jason often is as smart as he thinks, but Simon learned his lesson too late to even begin to see the road to redemption. As satisfying as it was to see him and Gerling get what was coming to them I honestly feel more pity for them than anything else. We knew what was coming and they had better choices but couldn’t muster the courage to make them

Feu et Glace

That was epic. Love the music, the aura, blocking the teleport, and his calm delivery. Simon is an idiot. Thank you for the great Friday chapter. Now, I wonder if he burned up a prime avatar and used his backup?

Darth Bob

Hey Shirt have great week off rests and have sandwiches 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

Parker Bond

That's why I'm a reader, not a writer

Marleen

Thanks for the chapter. Have a nice and relaxing week.

Jax

"I showed the world that a fight is possible..." Dude, did we just see the same thing, he played around with Jack like he was a piece of putty in his hand, turned into a LITERAL wrathful god and annihilated hordes of monsters with not even a flick of his wrist. In what universe did you show people he can be fought?

Jax

Also, not enough lightning for me. Thunderstruck needs more lightning.

Adrian

Zealots often confuse 'stood up to' someone with 'fought' someone. While there's something to be said for defiance, it was clear that standing up to Jason cost him no more than some time and attention. I doubt that taught the lesson Simon wanted.

Adrian

He has prison planets. And there's a huge difference between being on Earth and somewhere Jason is both omniscient and omnipotent

Adrian

Sarcasm for the win!

RonGAR

Oh I know... McKean is a good mind to have. And after keeping him alive for a few centuries, maybe that mind could be 'turned' into something useful... but still... right now im in my feelings about it. Not seeing the logic behind the fog of emotions. Give me time.

Brad Gammey

In one word, "sheeesh!" Just... that's...I suppose that would be the hegemon.

Justin Aether

Jason turning his cloud ship into something that looks like an Ultimate One from Perfect Run is hilarious

Justin Hunsberger

Thats way too much resolution for a Friday cliffhanger

RonGAR

Right? ... McKean seems very 'dense' at times. Made me think to myself a few times.. "Hmm, I thought he was supposed to be a genius?" Turned very cartoon level villian at the end.

Agent P.

Illusion pal. Illusion.

Corvid

Yeah, some real "but you HAVE heard of me" vibes from ole' Simon there

RonGAR

Of course... when the author gives a soundtrack, you most def got to pull it up and listen to what al fuss is about. Its a cool track, don't get me wrong, but couldn't fuse it with the scenes I was reading. But it was the right amount of 'goofy' IRONMAN was my first intro to this soundtrack btw. Actually... VARSITY BLUES ,with the late, great James Vander BEEK.

Corvid

"Nazi scientist deal" truly sums up the decision well. After ww2 there were all of those nazi scientists who did the most reprehensible and unspeakable things to people, but they also advanced pretty much every scientific field imaginable, which is why we paperclipped them. What's only thing worse than an evil genius? An evil genius who is working to advance a rival faction's capabilities instead of yours.

Kendal Bozant

I'm reminded of the scene with the Builder's Vessel (Shako) and his royal descendants. Those Royals also refused to accept other truths.

Tim Parry

I am getting a feeling that this just accelerated the timeline for the bridge to complete. Is Knowledge is about to walk out and contest his domains with her priests?

Rad Hazard

Yeah, not sure anyone will be lining up to fight a guy who can pluck a whole castle out of a mountain, making it a rook for a second, and solo a whole monster wave by turning on a spotlight from his floating doom palace.

Kristy Riedel

Some book smart people are idiots when it comes to people

Joanna

I’m pretty sure they are. They’re all connected after all

Joanna

Not necessarily. It could easily have been the title just because Jason said it. Like the last one: “Something Jasony” is just mentioned in passing, not a focus of the chapter

J Holmes

So was that a new avatar because his old one was killed to let the phoenix out, or was it the same one? 'Cause I got a feeling he's gonna need a spare body or two soon.

jeffrey niski

Now that he's dealt with, I'm not ready for Jason to take this Huge L coming in the form of some dickhead God.

Rowdy Robby

Thanks Shirt. Gerling deserved it.

Stephanie Washburn

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” McKean’s voice screamed. “HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS? WHAT IS THAT MUSIC?” Never change, Shirtaloon.

Stephanie Washburn

Why would Knowledge do that? For one thing she can't come to Earth. And for another, she both cannot contest the domains and has no need to.

Stephanie Washburn

On the other hand, Simon would probably have mentally imploded if he'd even tried to admit that his plan didn't work. So it does kind of make sense that he stayed deep in denial. That kind of "sold my soul for nothing" realization takes more time and self-awareness than the man had.

Tim Parry

So the gods can contest each others domains, they talk about it in book 11 I think, they have to surround it with their followers. Also, there aren’t any other linked planets without gods on both planets that we know of. And some kind of force is coming through related to the gods. I believe he made subtle illusory comments that lead to me thinking her (something about Gabriel I don’t remember).

Naotsugu97

“You’ve been, Thunderstruck!!!!”

Soli116

He just sucked in gobs of cosmic force. I think he'll be ok for a bit.

Thalamus Dredge

His individual avatars still have the Nirvanic Transfiguration star phoenix one per tier revive. He found out that he can get additional charges by draining the life force out of beings with reality juice in them. So far the sources of reality juice he has found are messengers and vampires who have had reality core infused blood. He just spent the last decade participating in a vampire war and has had a steady supply of the stuff, he's got at least this revive stocked up, probably more. Which would be helpful but the problem he's gonna encounter isn't someone killing his body, but trapping his prime avatar in a way that stops him from doing stuff with his domains. The evil space king told him that certain methods of trapping his prime avatar have a limiting effect on his ability to act elsewhere through his domains, so if someone traps his prime avatar in one of those ways then they get a Jason free invasion of earth.

JW Saxby

Great stuff Shirt 👍🏼 Tftc 🍻

Thomas Bell

The difference being that Jason is not a god. His Domains are not "domains" on the religious sense they are actual bits of his soul which she has no chance of messing with. That said she can conquer earth and mess with the small d domains rather than the capital D Domains.

Kristy Riedel

I think he knows he has punished us enough. ;op

Kristy Riedel

Yeah, Jason isn't settling in to rule earth, but people to whom ruling earth is the big prize can't grasp that Jason doesn't want to.

joseph peltier

Dang, not gonna lie, I was kinda hoping Simon would end up being one of the good guys. Just seems like all that build up was leading to something more than a “ bad guy gets easily taken down by good guy in exactly the way it should have been done”. I mean there has to be a backlash politically before Zara gets killed and initiates the whole Jason tries to save her campaign right?

Kalanaere

Showed that he can be fought? I think Simon is or was a tad confused. There was no actual fighting Jason. Just Jason fucking around and slapping Jack silly before obliterating Simon. By the time anybody on Earth currently has the power to rival Jason it won't matter because in all likely hood by then Jason will have long since done what Soramir does and just appointed somebody to rule in his stead. Sure he might stop back around every century or so but that's it.

Ant

I'm pretty sure both Gerling and McKean deserve much worse, However to do that Jason would have to act like the builder, flay their souls until they gave in and then mince them. I'm sure it'd upset the reaper, and break Jason's principles.

Ant

Or trap them in his universe, kill them, not let their souls go, rebuild bodied for their souls, kill them again, repeat ad. infinitum.

Mr IHHI

Has Jason yet actually once tried explaining why he is doing what be is doing? He is always making vague melodramatic warnings but maybe he might try for once writing it down properly and letting people have a real choice in the matter before going edgelord autocrat on them

Chiqui Joy

Damn that last sentence hits hard. Nice

Chiqui Joy

It would be funny and appropriate is someone said/thought that McKean must hate improve because he stuck with his original speech after getting spanked

Cordell Patrick

Except he sorta is a God thats the whole Hedgmon thing. His exact title is Astral Nexus. He's the crossroads between GAB, Astral King, and God. His GAB nature is The System Administrator. He has an Astral kingdom and all the regalia of an Astral King. And the Hedgmon is his God state. Its first appearance Collin says "Dad went full God mode." Mr. North also says that Spirt Domains are the things of Gods. So yes his Domains are ones in the religious sense of the word in universe. Heck most people in his Domains pray to Jason.

Cordell Patrick

Tried that last time and everyone turned. Now hes also got to worry about Knowledge finding out he knows shes gonna do something like invade Earth to push her restrictions. So I understand him not really saying anything.

Alicia Bolick

Absolutely fabulous chapter! The only thing that would have made it better is if Collin got to actually do some eating. Poor guy is hungry and feeling left out.

Crystal Donak

Yes . He has had do many meetings with different world leaders. He brought them into his universe to prove what he was. He learned from last time. It's like the first half of this book. I honestly felt it was pretty tedious. But yes he has tried.

Daniel is ŁØNE

True but they are also equal parts his soul made manifest, and while conventionally gods might be able to challenge domains, challenging Jason's domain is challenging him for dominance over his soul and there is not a being in the verse who wins that fight, including the GAB's.

Dalth

Remember that time his aura was described as being “bludgeoned to death with the Ten Commandments”? I can only imagine it’s gotten worse. Also, power like that shooting out of him like last night’s curry.

nameless1

"...I’m the guy who fights monsters.” He said the thing, in the thing

Ben McAdam

Thanks for not leaving a cliffhanger before your time off! Great chapter, as always 🤩 Enjoy your break 🙂

Thomas Bell

The "system" is a side effect of his being a GAB. The primary effect is that he is the occupant of the Cosmic Throne and enforces laws upon gods and other GAB, that's why the GAB were against him seizing the throne, because it returned the rules to law rather than guidelines. Currently he is not in a state where he can occupy the cosmic throne full time, his vessel isn't strong enough, when he does take his place his title is "The Hegemon" in the same way that you have "The Builder" and "The World Phoenix". This is why it says the Hegemon has risen, he's briefly assumed his throne and is no longer fucking about.

Mr IHHI

That was essentially a power flex. All they know right now is ‘I’m strong and have stuff, do what I say or you get no stuff and I remove you’. We have had loads of dialogue with people demonstrating they don’t know what’s going on but think it must be more than the vampires as they don’t justify militarising the world. When he was weak in the past he was even worse, it was just ‘don’t do what you want to do because it will eventually hurt the world for reasons’. If some mad ozzy told me that I think I would wave them on. Good choices are informed choices

Philipp Battenberg

Jason offered McKean a few chapters back to talk, to explain and McKean noped out of it without even a jota of hesitation. He's rather dying than help *Jason* defend Earth.

Mr IHHI

And I thought reason prevailed always when talking to fanatics… 😂

Alexander Dalton

Great chapter! That Simon guy seems like a real moron.

Abdulaziz ALRumaih

While I see you point and I can agree with it We won’t know if that’s what Shirt intended For all we know Simon could have imagined that Jason was having a tough time with his mortal powers

Vodyinoi

Now that I think about it, if I was gonna go for an AC/DC song for Jason, it would be Back in Black. It could be his theme song, really. Solid fit!

Addie

Simon says don't disintegrate. Aww he lost

Addie

Earth's magical membrane is repairing. The bridge is doing that. When it's repaired, not just diamond rankers from Pallustris will be able to visit, but transcendants from anywhere can come in. For the sole reason that Jason is there (and there's no gods to moderate transcendant activities) there's going to be a lot of visitors. And we're still not up to the big bad thing that he's been hiding from himself but I think he still suspects what will change and that's why he broke up with Zara.

Greg Mat

Please tell me theyre now gonna reconnect the grid to the bridge to power the whole planet? Infinite free power generation FTW!

Shylo132

He got to eat almost the entire core vine!

Steve Parks

Question: why doesn’t the earth have time? What is coming?

Steve Parks

That was a good one. 👏

David Yow

A world that has had magic its whole existence is about to have an open stable portal to another universe full of people who largely found out magic existed within the last generation or two. Earth is about to be the DLC for Palli, and there are no gods to regulate the high-ranking entities that come through, Jason struggled with one team of space pirates, and he's about to have an entire planet of opportunity seekers drop onto his home turf. Not to mention the Messengers who might come through looking for a certain Purity Artifact.

Kallisti _

Did daylight savings change when the next chapter should be released? Because it's 2.5hrs late vs last Friday

Ocellus

He said something about taking a break

Kallisti _

*sighs* I was hoping I had misremembered that.

KollegvomMirgan

I'm a bit confused to all of Jason's titles. Astral Nexus is his Astral King title? System Administrator is his GAB title? Hegemon is his god title?

TradeMk

Not to sure myself but I see it as Astral Nexus being all that he is, an overarching title. Hegemon being his title when acting in the mindset of a god, and system administrator referring to his connection and role in regard to the system. I don't think it's 1 title per aspect of power, though I could be wrong.

Nikolai Pesudovs

A couple chapters back he said he’ll explain everything after Simon was dealt with

Mr IHHI

It’s been over a decade in the chronology

J

Is there a new chapter today?

Hunter

Yeah for real. Hope shirt is ok he usually says if he’s taking a week off.

Hunter

But isn’t knowledge the main person wanting to send forces to earth? Like wouldn’t the other gods not like that very much. Seems like dominions purview.

Dale Winchell

Pretty sure this is the week he said that he would be staying with an author friend. Then he is off all next month, I think.

Steve Parks

It’ll be interesting to see if gods pop up on earth once the magic levels rise enough to support them.

J

Must have missed that

Max Lopo

Nexus is his identification as an Original Astral King. The hegemon is his Title/name. God, supergod, whatever. It's the highest, like "The Builder" or "The Reaper". Possibly due to the fact that he is the one who sat on the Throne, so he is "The Hegemon". Admin is what the system calls him. Because he is literally the admin, he made the damn thing.

Hunter

Astral Nexus is the designation the system gave Jason as he is a nexus of gods, astral kings, and great astral beings. System administrator seems to be his role or title with the system but I’ve also always been confused on that as well, since he repaired the sundered throne is he now the great astral being of something? And Hegemon has always been a title or part of his character not sure of the explanation.

John Philemon

As Far as I understand it, Jason made himself part god by being a transcendent and making a temple dedicated to himself, as well as multiple spirit domains His spirit king is because of his astral throne and gate, and his astral kingdom, he's a great astral being in the making because he sat on the cosmic throne and introduced the system to the Cosmos, i believe that when Jason Asano gets to daimon rank, a part of him is going to separate from him, the Hegemon probably, and they will exist as two separate beings with some ephemeral connection to each other, And Jason himself being a collection of all three of these things makes the system identify him as a nexus, I also suspect that Jason's spirit kingdom is going to be used as some form of COsmic Neutral ground for transcendent beings to use

SkippyARC

There was an announcement on March 3rd

joshua kinney

You need to look further down the page where it says the authors schedule he said he would be taking the week off to clear his head!!! And next month he said it would be a longer break

Sofia Rowley

Hegemon is his God name- like knowledge, healer, etc. I think there's a part in book 11 when they're sanctioning the undeath remnant and Boris mentions that the divine marking says hedgemon. He's also essentially one of earth's gods at this point. Astral Nexus is his astral King aspect. Nexus because he is the Nexus point of those three types transcendent entities (god, GAB, astral King)- but astral "something" seems to be the naming convention for originals- there was one called the astral beast and another one i can't remember. Administratior is his great astral being side, he is the GAB of the system.

Michael Romo

Shirt deserves a break, and Jason deserves shirts fill attention and ability. But damn if it isn't killing me. I mean we just got him back. Lol.

Kristy Riedel

He took last week off and should have had a new chapter today.

Kristy Riedel

Thank you for mentioning, I need to check back at 3. He took last week of and should be back today.

Esther Prenosil

I thought Hegemon was his astral 'king(actually nexus but whatever)' name, since it's what his brand would be if he used it. Astral Nexus is his nature after his system stopped using the term race. And he is the system the GAB. They're not sure if there's going to be a god of the system or not, but the system references his avatar as system administrator because his avatar isn't actually him, but he is sort of in that body.

the one who reads

Jason is the astral Nexus he is made up of three transcendent entities Astral King - spirit kingdom or astral Kingdom Hegimon - title of a god The system administrator -GAB On the system recognizes him as this so it gives him the astral Nexus nature cuz he's not a type of person his system is so wide spread that it can't use the word race anymore So you guys going to quite right but I think you were mixing up many things the one that brought up Jason's fight with Undead Avatar was really close because hegemon is his Divine title and the Divine marks he lives behind in mandated magic or God language whatever you want to use is the word hegemon The system of administrator he has access and connection to every entity that can use the system no matter who or what it is he also has full control over it although it's currently limited because his power does not match the power of the system until he gets to peak diamond rank And as an astral King his power relies into the world he created out of his soul his astral Kingdom and that is the only part of reality he can affect is his own universe that he made out of his soul even though it's a tiny solar system it's still a part of him Now I said this before but I rarely talk on here so I figured I would do so don't mind no periods or no? And stuff like that I mean I'm using voice to text to do this

tsrh

Lots of people pointing out that it was hardly a fight and doesn’t really make sense for Simon to say otherwise. Also doesn’t make sense to ask what the music is as he was around when ACDC - Thunderstruck was a very well known song

Alex Frain

Honestly Simon did more harm than good.... How many people died fighting the vampires and how much time was wasted with the distraction before the REAL assault begins...

KyoDaDungeon!!

Horrible Lex luther definitely based on the recent superman movie Allstar animated Lex best Lex and really not even close to an Evil Clive

N Hale

Did mckean miss the system message? Lmao
