Jason watched as the blue-orange light pouring down the shaft disintegrated McKean’s body. Behind him, monsters continued to pour out of the rainbow-coloured manifestation that was McKean’s collapsed astral space. They were variations of plant monsters, often dripping with blood. Almost all were silver-rank and swiftly annihilated by the gold-rank siege weapon still beaming down from above. The scant few golds were immediately inundated by leeches that swarmed out of the rubble, and brought down to be slowly devoured.

Jason watched as a large plant pod grew up from the floor, pushing its way up through the steel and concrete debris. It undulated as something pushed from the inside, trying to get out. A hand tore its way free and then ripped the hole wider. A naked, bloody Simon McKean stumbled out, looking confused. He stared at Jason without recognition, then fell to the ground in a seizure. His body bulged and blistered, as if being inflated with scalding hot air.

Gordon arrived in front of Jason as a cloud of blue and orange sparks that coalesced into his normal body, surrounded by floating orbs. Three of those orbs turned into shields, interposing themselves between McKean and Gordon right before McKean exploded. The first shield shattered and the second was damaged but held. McKean’s liquified remains painted a red circle, broken only where it struck the shields.

The manifestation of rainbow light shrank as the outpouring of monsters slowed to a trickle and finally stopped. The silver-rank monsters were swiftly dispatched by the beam, while the golds were much harder to kill. They remained buried under leech mounds, scattered amongst the piles of rubble and the dead silver-ranks.

The massive beam from above cut off, leaving the chamber in shadow. The cloud ship blocked much of the sunlight coming down the shaft, a few beams cutting past to pierce the chamber like blades in the dark. The ground was covered in dead monsters, semi-dissolved from the beams. In about an hour, when the monsters started to break down, the chamber would be wretched with rainbow smoke.

Another plant pod rose out of the ground to spawn a second ill-fated copy of McKean’s body. It met the same fate as the first, soon reduced to red splatter on the ground. As a third pod grew, a drone floated down from the cloud ship to hover near Jason.

“Dad, General Mills wants to talk with you.”

“Put him through.”

“Mr Asano,” Michael’s voice came through the drone. “The fighting is going well, but we have a fresh problem. The vampire forces are getting warped and exploding, but they still aren’t dying. They aren’t really fighting back anymore, and their own attempts at regeneration are killing them, but once they get killed, they keep regrowing and exploding.”

“I’m seeing it too,” Jason said. “The magic is still being fed into the vine, but it’s hurting more than harming. It seems that McKean tried to make himself immortal as well. Hold on a moment, General.”

As another pod grew out of the floor, Jason gestured Gordon aside as the familiar moved to shield Jason again. Jason conjured a knife to cut a vertical opening in the pod, his hands getting filthy as he yanked the cut open to reveal a fresh McKean clone. He grabbed the clone’s face and its whole body melted instead of exploding. The pod collapsed and no new one grew in its place.

“General,” Jason said to the drone. “I’ve literally ripped McKean control node out of the ground, so that magic will eventually reach the point where it’s too incompatible to resurrect them anymore. I can accelerate that process in person, now that I’ve deepened my connection to the magic fuelling it, but it will take time to propagate through the whole vine system.”

“Is there any way to speed that up? The longer we have to fight, the more casualties we face as our people get tired and our resources run low.”

Jason looked around at the room piled high with monsters. Leeches squirmed their way out of the rubble to feast on them, in numbers greater than Colin had ever built up to before. It only took a short while for the room to be drowning in them.

“I might I have a solution, General, but I’m not sure how long it’s going to take. In the meantime, focus on containing the threat and avoiding casualties.”

“Already happening. Keep me updated, Mills out.”

“What’s the plan?” Nik asked through the drone.

“Colin, I need to speak with you,” Jason said.

A cluster of leeches left the monster they were consuming to meld together into a blood clone with Jason’s face.

“What’s up?” Colin asked, gesturing around the room. “I’m kind of in the middle of cleanup here.”

“You shouldn’t be able to propagate this much until diamond-rank,” Jason said. “Has feeding on the blood root vine given you a boost?”

“You know, if more people used life force and chaos magic as a dressing, I could really come around on salads. Aunty Erika’s a chef, do you think she’d—”

“No,” Jason said. “I don’t think she would. How long do you think you can keep increasing your biomass?”

“It’s not going to last long,” Colin said. “Going over my usual limit burns through the magic I’m feeding on pretty fast. I have to keep feeding on the vine to maintain it.”

“Then keep feeding. Keep spreading and devour the whole vine, until it’s gone completely.”

Colin raised his eyebrows.

“Really?”

“Really. Go forth and multiply, my son.”

“I just want to be clear, because you’re always saying ‘Colin, don’t devour all life on Earth,’ and stuff like that.”

“I’m not, actually, but suddenly it feels like I should. Colin, don’t devour all life on Earth. Just the vine. And maybe the vampires, and McKean’s plant abominations, but don’t get in the way of the Earth forces. You can come off as scary.”

“I’m not scary!”

Jason patted him on the head and Colin failed to suppress a bashful grin.

“Everyone knows that you’re the best boy, Colin, but people are very worked up today. I don’t want anyone to do anything stupid and get eaten.”

Cleaning up the full forces of the vampires took days. A week later, main combat operations had come to an end, but scattered vampires were still being hunted across the planet. These were the ones that hadn’t followed the vampire lords into joining with McKean, and hadn’t been bound to the blood vine. The grid being able to track them meant that there was nowhere for them to hide.

Jason and his team had participated in the hunt. Where they could, they captured them and sent them to the Asano Clan’s vampire city for treatment. For the most part, however, they were hunted down and killed. Earth was ready for the vampire threat to be finally over.

Annabeth Tilden lived a perpetually busy life, managing the political ramifications of Jason running around the Earth like a mad demigod. One day he was insisting he wanted no part of human affairs, and the next he was trying to reshape civilisation. The formation of the Earth Defence Joint Initiative had multiplied her workload, culminating in their first major operation.

Fortunately, Anna was far from alone in her efforts. Danielle Geller had done an astounding job of coming to grips with Earth politics, and Li Li Mei had also proven more than capable. The Chinese woman was one of the few with political experience in both worlds, and had proven herself to be a useful, if ruthless, asset.

Anna approached Jason’s suite of rooms in the clan tower in Saint-Étienne, but there was no door to knock on. One would only appear if Jason was willing to see you. An empty doorway did form at Anna’s approach and she walked in. The room she arrived in had a work desk in the corner, but was clearly an afterthought. Dominating the large room was a gaming table that looked like a pool table, but had no holes for the balls. The walls were mostly covered in shelves stuffed full of board games, along with what looked like racks for yoga mats, but with gaming mats rolled up in them instead. There were also paintings that she recognised, courtesy of her art curator wife, as having been painted by Dawn.

The back wall didn’t exist, the room opening directly onto the balcony. She found Jason out there with his hands on the railing, looking out over the city.

“Was McKean right?” He asked without turning around as she approached. “Has the world been waiting for a sign that fighting me was possible before they rose up and did just that?”

“McKean, like many intelligent people, had an idea in his head about the way the world works that was more in line with how he thought it should work. That’s not to say that there aren’t a lot of powerful people that would like you gone, but you aren’t at the top of their list. You’ve been pushing to advance magitech while enhancing and unifying military power. They don’t like how much you’ve resisted efforts to centralise that power, but they accept that you are the price of the changes you’ve brought about.”

“They aren’t worried that I’m centralising that power in myself?”

“They realise, especially after the last week, that you don’t need to. That your personal power is essentially unfathomable. It really didn’t help when they saw you telling your pet apocalypse beast not to devour all life on Earth.”

He finally turned to look at her.

“I figured that McKean’s broadcast would end when I destroyed his astral space. I didn’t know that Nik was going to take over the feed and keep broadcasting. No one was meant to see that.”

“Regardless, if the traditional Earth power holders could get rid of anyone, it wouldn’t be you. It would be Boris Ketland. Now that he’s openly leading them, the Cabal has become highly aggressive with their economic and social programs. He’s toppled governments and cut some of the world’s most exploitative business practices off at the knees.”

“I’ve toppled governments too.”

“It’s not a competition to see who can most aggravate the world’s richest and most powerful people, Jason.”

“Maybe it should be.”

“The richest and most powerful person in the world is you.”

“You say that like you’ve never seen a hypocrite before.”

She rolled her eyes.

“You’re right to wonder about the reaction to your confrontation with McKean. He wanted to show the world something, it just didn’t end up being what he thought. Like most things, the reality was more nuanced than what he expected. He thought he could rally the world, but nothing really can. Whether it’s McKean’s imagined rebellion against you, or your EDJI program, there are always those who are dead set against it. Some people hate you, others love you. That hasn’t changed.”

“Something has.”

“What makes you say that?”

“The prayers.”

“What prayers?”

“People pray to me, Anna.”

“People pray to a lot of things. Statues. Wishing wells. Astrological signs. What makes you think more people are praying to you?”

“I hear them.”

“You eavesdrop on people praying to you?”

“It’s not eavesdropping, Anna. I hear them. The prayers.”

“You hear prayers?” she asked, scepticism heavy in her tone. “Jason, do you think you’re God?”

“I’m not God, Anna. I’m not even a god. I just occasionally do some things that normally only gods do.”

“Well, I guess there’s a video trending of you turning into a giant space bird, so why not this? What does it even matter if you can hear prayers? You don’t answer them, do you?”

“Of course not.”

“Then don’t go around telling people you do god things. Dealing with the various religions on your behalf is already a pain. I’ve had the New Vatican crawling up my butt all week about the old Vatican. They think you’re going to take it over, the way you did Saint-Étienne. Which the reconstituted French government have been hammering me about, by the way. Again. People are already looking to carve up Europe, before we’ve even finished scraping the vampires off of it.”

“I’m afraid your issues with the world religions are about to get worse, Anna.”

She closed her eyes and let out a long, slow breath.

“Jason, what did you do?”

“I’ve already told you that something big was coming after the vampires. That I’ve been carefully restricting information.”

“Yeah. Even from yourself, you said, which still makes no sense.”

“That time is over now. I need you to get things ready for me to make a presentation. I need to tell the world what’s coming, and I’m going to explain it all. What’s happening, why it’s happening, and how we got here. How I got here.”

“I don’t suppose you’d like to give me some advanced warning?”

“I will. Right now, I’ve only shared it with my team, but I intend to share it with those working for me, clan leadership and my Pallimustus allies first. The short version is that the other world’s goddess of Knowledge has been preparing to invade the Earth for half a millennium, and she used me as a key part of that plan.”

“Can’t you stop her?”

“No. That’s the problem with an entity who has what amounts to infinite power and Knowledge: she makes very good plans. Even in my lifetime, I’ve accidentally thrown a few wrenches in the gears, but she has contingencies and adapts. The only thing that could actually stop her would be to destroy the bridge between the two worlds.”

“The one McKean was using?”

“Yes.”

“It sounds like the thing is more trouble than it’s worth.”

“It isn’t. Without it, the Earth gets destroyed. Knowledge set that into motion as the first step of her plan. The final step is me going back to Pallimustus and completing the bridge, opening the Earth for invasion. Not only can I not fight her, but I have to keep helping her. I’ve been told for a long time now that there’s a fight coming that I can’t win, but the truth is that I can’t fight it at all. I even have to work for the bad guy, and there’s nothing I can do about it. That’s how good her plan is. The truth was kept from me by my own allies so that I wouldn’t do something extreme, and they were right to do so. If I’d learned this when I was younger, I’d have done something breathtakingly stupid and gotten a lot of people killed in the process. Probably would have gotten the whole planet wiped out, and a good chunk of the universe with it.”

“There’s nothing you can do to stop this?”

“There was something I could try. But, like I said, the risk was too great. I would have taken that risk, once upon a time, but I’ve seen too many people suffer the consequences of my ‘bold heroism.’ Some things you just have to live with.”

“So, what? You’re just going to go off and help some goddess invade the Earth?”

“Yes. It’s a fight she’s already won. You knew that something like this was coming, Anna. The world knew. I was turning the Earth into a unified weapon, and it wasn’t hard to figure out why. Now, it’s time to share the details.”

“There was a hope that you were getting the planet ready to act more as a deterrent to invasion.”

“No. War is coming, and it’s time to tell the world everything.”

TFTC, and congrats to those who called it, now that we have such explicit confirmation. Knowledge is the big bad after all. I have so many questions!!

mhaj58

Jason has access to the cosmic throne and the literal best option is to let knowledge have her way? Sorry Shirty, but I don’t buy it

jeffrey niski

The story is awesome but this next arc about knowledge taking over earth. I'm just not here for it. Hopefully it's not long.

Hobbes

Best boy Colin 🖤

DareDaemon

He doesn't, though. He sat on the cosmic throne just long enough to fix it, but unless there's been things hidden from us, he abandoned that power the moment he was done fixing it.

Daniel Wills

Tftc! But also can we please stop having Anna ask Jason if he thinks he’s a God? Hasn’t she done this half a dozen times?

Hunter

I know right? Like I know it hasn’t been stated how it works but why can’t the other gods sanction knowledge? Like she is acting wayyyyy outside her mandate.

Stephanie Washburn

What an incredibly disappointing revelation. Knowledge? Really? Not the magic space bird who was always a little suspicious.... Knowledge.

Thomas Foster

The goosebumps the end of this chapter gave me are unreal

Nick

He *had* the cosmic throne, he lost that immediately after he finalized the changes that made him a great astral being.

Nick

Purity's relic is on earth, calling it now. No one has found it, and earth doesn't have anything for knowledge that wouldn't be delivered on a silver platter by the experts that would inevitably be sent to pallimustus.

Ligeia

I assume Shirt will explain it in the next few chapters.

Remy Gramont

Splendid!! Tyftc! What is Knowledge invading for? To learn more technology to get more knowledge? She wants to become a sole god of a planet? And this is her crusades?

Chuck Haeberle

Stupid daylight savings time. Had to wait a whole extra hour to find out Knowledge is SUCH a BITCH!

Zachary Blevins

What does it say if the only God in this book series that I like is Dominion

Zachary Blevins

But we’ve all known this has been coming The interesting thing is to see how Jason’s going to screw her over

Ligeia

I don't understand why Jason has to work for her -- it makes no sense to me -- but I do trust that Shirt has worked out all the details of Knowledge's plan. He's been crazy careful not to share it with us, although a surprising number of people have sorted out that she's the big baddie. But why would she invade Earth? I can see a coalition of Earth religions to fight her, solving the problems of the Middle East, but beyond that I'm puzzled! Also,I love Colin. 😊

Izraifel

I've thought of knowledge being a right C U Next Tuesday ever since she had Gabrielle ambush him on Emir's dock. We've had the 'feel good hapoy' arc. Now it's time for the 'man behind the mouth' arc.

james foster

But I liked Knowledge... sigh.

WanderingScholar

Maybe the real villain was the knowledge we learned along the way.

Kristy Riedel

I still want to think that Knowledge's motivation for coming to Earth is to fight an actual greater threat. Jason saw that Earth would need the knowledge of both worlds in order to survive as part of the greater cosmic community, maybe that is her goal as well. As far as her potentially having just gone off the rails, I still think the sundering of the throne had more consequences than we know. Maybe Knowledge is preparing to face off with the original Builder.

Bonktrauma

Ive known knowledge was bad for awhile now, it was very clear

Kendal Bozant

What you don't know, is the original Network cells are all technically Knowledge cells, cause you know, they preserved and propagated (if only to their members) hidden knowledge. 😉 Wait! This means it was the Builder and Knowledge who were allies way back when the Network Founder came to earth, and he was likely a follower of Knowledge. Which means i need to re-read Knowledge and Jason's first conversation!

Daniel Hug

I don't understand this plot twist at all lol. Why is a single god so terrible when there's an entire pantheon Jason can ally with against her? Why is knowledge trying to make an enemy of an insane transendent like Jason in such a heavy-handed manner? Also, supreme overlord knowledge is definitely not the worst thing that could have happened; if anything, it sounds like it could be a good thing for the insane and ignorant people of Earth. Looking forward to it, though. Hopefully, it all makes sense in the next chapter and not several months from now.

John Durrett

I can’t conceive of her manifesting herself there but it’s a possibility. She has an army of believers who can cross the same bridge without Jason’s help - call it crusades or holy Jihad, but the devoted to her will wage war on her behalf. But humans can be fought. I have yet to see knowledge take physical action but even then Jason has his own temples. Yeah I don’t see the whole there’s nothing I can do she already won

Tessa King

Knowledge....we have, she wants it. And we are just so damn good at sharing it.

John Durrett

Tyftc. Collin blushing was a sweet moment. Now someone just needs to bust Jason’s balls hard to do the same either Nik

RonGAR

Everyone Pay me $100 dollars! I KNEW IT! I KNEW IT WAS Knowledge, who was going to lead the charge against Earth. KNEW IT!!! ------_ Also, KNOWLEDGE doesn't hate Jason, I 'BET' she is actually crushing on him hard! Lets see if I win that bet too! I accept, Venmo, Cashapp, Paypal, XRP, and BTC. LOLOLOL

Kendal Bozant

I think it's along the line of self preservation, just like Death's bargain was.

Chuck Haeberle

Why would they ally against her? Who but Liberty would object on their domain's grounds? And Knowledge didn't know that Jason would become ... whats the Sundered Throne called now? ... or the Hedgemon for that matter, when she set her plans in motion. I assume Jason's core will continute to keep some knowlege from his avatar (maybe even remake it) before heading back?

Nick

Do you really think earth isn't going to send the best and brightest to check out a different world? She can pull whatever she likes out of the minds of everyone sent to pallimustus.

Michael McMahon

I thought Enery Vamp Thadwick had it after the messenger king had a chat with his mum?

Tessa King

But is she? She is knowledge. How would it be outside her scope to go get it? Problem is, once the door is open can't they all get in? Maybe purity's thing is here and that would allow her to use it to make a 2nd her here?

Tor-Arne Sandstrak

He's still the ruler, and owner of the cosmic throne... It's just that the full extent of it would turn him into a vegetable in the most non-positive way. I haven't asked a vegetable what it's like being a vegetable, but I assume astral nexuses aren't meant to be vegetables.

Champ Bob

Is this a thing where Knowldege goes "war and conflict breeds innivation!" or something? Sounds like a Metal Gear line...

Kendal Bozant

I don't think it is Jason following her orders, so much as him acting to preserve life, which actions push her agenda along

David Cooper

Shit. I can see Travis getting a divorce now.

Julia

Revelations aside, i wanna know how this will affect travis and gabrielles marriage lmao

Kendal Bozant

'Hedgemon' is his father's title, not Jason's ;-) Sorry, just saw such irony in that misspelling

Daniel Hug

Sure, but even if she planned for it, that doesn't mean she has to pull the trigger when she has new information. And for whom would ally against her? IDK, but the pantheon innately has checks and balances and counters, so no god is overwhelmingly powerful.

Unwillingmainer

He's a right dick, but at least he is honest about it. You kneel to the boss or become the boss, he doesn't care which.

Nick

Thadwick has a sword that kills lesser gestalt beings and binds greater gestalt beings. A copy of the sword blew up Jason's avatar because it couldn't handle the influx of mana, which was infinite, but it did bind Jason to the spot. The king of kings (can't remember his name) already told Jason that there are ways to lock down his prime avatar for a long time. Seems reasonable that the real sword can bind a prime avatar by continually pulling mana into the sword itself. Plus the sword was in the dimension ship used for the reaper trials when the priests tried to attack. We know purity hadn't been swapped at that point because the fake purity excommunicated all the priests. It's reasonable to assume that the sword is not the purity relic.

David Harshman

I could have accepted that ambush as an unfortunate accident resulting from a failure to understand mortals. Jason did, after all. But, once she sent the priest after Rufus to manipulate his grief, that was when Knowledge was clearly not a good person.

Aaron S

Why is it that so many people seem to know this was coming? As Jason said knowledge was VERY VERY GOOD at hiding her plans… but everyone seemed to know that whatever this was was coming, even freaking NORETH! I thought it was established that the God on pal that the network founder worshiped was purity… Did we just not know and now we’re finding out that it was knowledge? That’s the only way Noreth could possibly know what this is. Leaving aside all the other people that I have no idea why they would know , why can’t Jason just turn around and go back to earth after he’s done finishing the bridge. Sure he’ll miss the first battle or two, but he can still participate. Finally, and most importantly of all , her and what army? We know she has holy warriors who fight the messengers, but even if she was allowed to just randomly go invading other worlds, the people that make up those armies aren’t gonna go massacring civilians… plus if the opposing faction is armed forces from Pali, then Jason has enough allies with enough political clout on the other side to make that really difficult for them

David Harshman

Death and Healer are pretty good, too. And, I like the direction Hero is going, now, too.

Kendal Bozant

I'm not sure she is alone, but she is definitely leading it. I also think all the gods coming over may be a good thing, considering home-grown gods aren't strong enough to manifest, so an established pantheon could ease the growing pains.

David Harshman

You are allowed to like villains and antagonists. They aren't believable as leaders if they aren't likeable.

Izraifel

Yep. Exxxxactly. And Jason accepting the initial gift or opting to worship outright would have given her a greater 'in' for her invasion. It also makes me wonder about the army she built for the builder/undeath. Was its original purpose 2 fold? Will that be the same army that invades Earth?

Mitha

This is a rather unique situation. Earth is not in the sphere of influence of any other god, so they don't / can't act. Normally the gods of the "target world" would defend against stuff like this and win easily on their fone turf. But earth lacks those gods.

Psykohamster

I HOPE SOMEONE PICKS UP THAT PHONE BECAUSE I F***ING CALLED IT! Edit: For anyone that doubts me I made a comment on chapter 1003 on Feb 9th.

Remy Gramont

Can earth’s magic even support a god yet? Or would enough followers give the support she/they need?

Vodyinoi

I'm really curious what the point of Knowledge invading will be. It seems like it's counter to her purpose to do something that will kill a lot of people but not actually do much to improve the spread of knowledge. Also, yeah, Travis and Gabrielle are gonna have some moments.

Zachary Blevins

That’s not how a Jihad works and yes, she clearly wants to be the only God of earth she has armies all over South America, in the other world, the entrance to the bridge somewhere in the tropics And when Jason steps back through, he’s probably gonna be attacked by the space Pirates and I suspect earth will be invaded too It’ll be multiple enemies across multiple fronts and Jason will have to choose the lesser of two

Daniel Hug

Jason should just go on a library burning spree on Pallamustus. Hes fought a giant space bird, whats so scary about an army of core users

Gary Becker

If i had to guess, its because gods have a limited life span based on the planet they are a god of and by doing this she may beable to grow her power to the point that she wont be tied down by worlds alone and possibly persist pass the ending if the worlds. Thats my guess anyway

Remy Gramont

Also is this when Dawn returns at the head of the cult of the world pheonix’s army to defend earth from knowledge?

Timothy

TYFTC!!!

Zachary Blevins

It went something like oh darn I wanted to be your first not hero He was supposed to be her champion That’s the spider said she’s not gonna like this when he started claiming domains. He wasn’t talking about the world Phoenix.

Daylan Ethridge

Perhaps by being a god of two worlds she can shift into an Astral being as well. Break the limits other gods have.

Aaron S

The space Pirates are in the astral. They can’t go to Pali. It already has enough diamond ranker who know the score to oppose them. This hasn’t been explicitly stated anywhere, but I don’t think the Pirates can attack someone on the bridge if it’s clipboard stabilizing two entire dimensions then I think it would take something on the level of the GABs to destroy it from the outside once it’s finished. Everyone has been saying for all this time that whatever this is, it’ll be impossible to stop, and while I get why Jason had to let it happen, I don’t get why it’s impossible for him to intervene after it already starts. Not to mention that Jason prime has known about it this entire time and it is probably been cooking up some shit inside his astral kingdom to do something presumably impressive. Bottom line : I see why this was impossible to prevent. I don’t see how it’s impossible for him to win. Not to mention, everyone kept saying that it was going to kill him which we’ve known wouldn’t be the case ever since he became literally immortal. I was thinking that it would be something on the level of somehow destroying an astral King permanently but no, it’s just an invasion.

Zachary Blevins

We worked things out with the sky bird when the throne is fixed, she got to stay as she was But yeah knowledge he’s been setting her up as the big villain since the second book at least I mean you tell someone not to read your mind and they continue to do it and then they continue to throw it in your face He was never supposed to be become an astral king Or the system

Doc Hoody

Is there a god of corruption? I’m starting to think there’s a god of corruption…

Chris Furry

You know, I did NOT see Knowledge as the BBEG, but the signs were there.

NicN

Tftc

Steve Parks

Tyftc!!!! Love where this is heading!

Ligeia

I'm wondering if Gabrielle was instructed to marry him so she could spy on Earth, or whether Knowledge has/had other spies, like Jamis Fran Muskar.i'd hate for Travis to get screwed over like that.

Zachary Blevins

I like my kids cat, but it’s still tears up the curtains every now and then and doesn’t care at all about it

Chris Furry

Exactly. War and Dominion, despite his love for Jason, would definitely be on her side. Healer has little to no skin in the game as his mandate is not to prevent war but to heal the sick and injured. The GABs might be Jason’s best allies.

Brian Glazier

She'd gain an entire world's worth of knowledge and the mantle of goddess of two worlds Gotta imagine that's a lotta biscuits

J

Boom I told you it was knowledge that set everything up to invade earth as soon as the founder appeared in palli.

Agent P.

Knowledge is Power and Power Corrupts

Andrew P

If knowledge is the original builder, then earth religions would probably accept her as the one true god.

McCainOffensive

I've worried about this since my second reread. Noreth said, "She's not going to like this." Upon discovering Jason's domain. I thought he was talking about Dawn, but she wound up not caring. I wondered if it was Knowledge from that point on. Now I guess we know for sure. It was also explicitly mentioned in an earlier chapter.

Vodyinoi

Is it possible for her to cross the bridge, though? From what we've seen (and my understanding, which could be flawed), there's not enough magic on Earth to support a god, so she'd just be sending people over to rule is what it seems like. Sure, maybe push for a god of Knowledge to develop on Earth, but would it be her?

Hayden Leech

Dos akashic speech work through recordings? Is everybody hearing their own language when watching this footage? Pretty epic eldritch stuff if so

Malcolm

The idea of Jason not fighting back doesn’t sit right with me

Christian Sullivan

She literally tried to get him on her side the first time they met

Corwynder

Oh I am so ready to see how this plays out!

Stephanie Washburn

Why would Knowledge be the original Builder? I can see her liking apples though, at this rate

NicN

I think when we were told there wasn't enough magic was back when it was in the proto astral spaces, now that there's direct manifestations and we have seen an increase in the overall magic level of earth I'd imagine it's just a matter of time until a god would naturally appear (I feel like the might have been briefly mentioned before? Possibly by shirt in the discord?)

Stephanie Washburn

Yeah. I also see no point whatsoever for her invading

Stephanie Washburn

Also she's not a goddess of war or conquest. Why bother?

Kendal Bozant

I had thought he meant the World Phoenix, but Knowledge losing some of her future real estate makes sense too

Kendal Bozant

Can't be. She has Authority on one world, and the other Great Astral Beings were mocking The Builder for trying to do the same.

Kendal Bozant

I think the Network Founder might have been her's too

DJ Doughty

I've been a bit confused on this. Didn't the earthlings figure out how to get rid of monster core taint without the relic? I think that was briefly mentioned in an earlier chapter. Or did I misunderstand?

Stephanie Washburn

Forget "normally the target world has gods that would resist". Gods are bound to their home planet and cannot leave it. Also, normally War, Conquest, and Dominion would get in Knowledge's way (and still might?)

Stephanie Washburn

Yeah, but the only antagonist to Knowledge was literally just Jason being an ass about other people's religions. Knowledge just straight up is not a villain. Except now we have to believe she is for some reason.

Hayden Leech

Travis doesn’t really like earth much. He has been vocal about not really having any reason to return at all and was hesitant to do so. This could go either way. Travis might even be an agent of knowledge. Not everybody shrugs off literal divinity. A divine visit or two plus an uber hot wife swaying your mind could have Travis be loyal to the church.

Hayden Leech

You don’t like the healer? I think he’s chill

Stephanie Washburn

Unfortunately Power is a sub-god of Dominion or something like that. And Corruption probably hangs out with Undeath...(and Dominion).

Kendal Bozant

I think that was Jason's assumption, not directly stated as a fact

Kendal Bozant

Yes, but i was thinking about the comments of 'another from earth that she met'

Hayden Leech

I bet the various faiths that want a slice of earth have diamond rank essence users. Earth has zero.

Hayden Leech

Pretty Badass that Simon did all this as a silver ranker. Guy had major potential.

Stephanie Washburn

They created a procedure that imitates the ability Tribulation Lightning to slowly remove monster core taint.

Josh Vanderpool

Couldn’t Jason turn the earth into his domain and fight Knowledge that way?

Kendal Bozant

That might be one of the 'rash actions' that others were afraid Jason would perform

Hayden Leech

…and how? He would need to transformation zone the entire earth. Which feels like a bad idea

Nick

Removing monster core taint is just the currently understood function of the relic. Who knows what it is truly capable of.

Henry Stukenborg

I’m still not sure I understand what knowledge wants with Earth, given she can’t actually travel to it for a variety of reasons. I mean…what does she actually gain?

Darth Bob

Oh my word Mate knowledge playing us from the beginning oh my God

Hayden Leech

Well. Noreth knew because he was the familiar of the network founder. An Earth outworlder turned priest of knowledge. So it makes sense he knows, he was in on it before betraying his master to Boris and the American network. That’s probably how Boris found out. Dawn and the trancendents including Jamis knew because they are crazy advanced and probably just scanned the universe. I’m more curious if this will somehow play into the Order of the Reaper/umber/Roland Remore/Victor Volaire story that might happen.

Adrian

There's only one thing peeps with power want: more. As for not being able travel... Why would she need to? She's a global entity, and Earth and Palimustus are twin globes, now ready to be permanently bridged together. I doubt it matters where her worshippers are if they have a line to her

Adrian

What's really to bad is that Gods were once described as rank 6 entities (above rank 5 diamond). It's too bad that, somehow, Jason's deal with TWP does not, apparently, apply to Gods. Then again, maybe it does, and the world is only really screwed once Jason reaches diamond rank. So. Evil....

blucube 14

Thanks for the chapter!

Adrian

Dominion doesn't oversee, corruption. He's just corruption-friendly

Collector of Stories

Ohh man can’t wait to see how this progresses! Normally I’m fine with the pace Shirt has the story going at but I really hope we don’t have to wait 5+ to hear this speech l. The build-up for this has been awhile and I’m dying of curiosity to see what’s coming! Is it all the gods or only some? Why exactly is Knowledge invading? How will the nations and adventurers of Palli respond? So many questions!

Terry Bell

You mean Steve....lol

Catfan

Typo: "ripped McKean control node out" should have the possessive on McKean, or maybe add 'the' if McKean *is* a control node.

Adrian

I'm even more confused. Putting aside the idea that and entity with no body needs to cross anything, I'm not seeing how she gets to rule anything. She has a divine portfolio that doesn't stretch to being able to fill the roles of all other deities. The one real thing I could see is her preventing the rise of Earth-specific gods by bringing enough Palimustus priests over. The other Palimustus gods would not take her trying to coopt an entire planet lying down and shea going to have a hell of a time wresting control of the bridge from Jason since he's intrinsically a part of it

Kaelan Spears

For dimensional intents and purposes, Earth and Pallimustus are likely considered the same area in regards to the laws of intrusion. I'm guessing a completed bridge would make it even more so

Adrian

The Big Fire Chicken is cool for now. But Knowledge quite literally, Knows Too Much to live (or remain unsanctioned if you prefer)

Hunter

Diamond rankers can’t enter earth until Jason becomes diamond rank, it’s part of the deal Jason made with the world Phoenix.

Hayden Leech

Hmm. I get how you forgot shirt since it’s been over a fricken year but Anna already knew about Jason hearing prayers. They pretty much had this talk once already .

Hayden Leech

“There are people dying in Bahrain, Jason. Innocent people are being caught up in the unrest.” “I know.” “Is that something you’re okay with?” “No, but it’s something I have to live with.” “Is it?” “You know that the System isn’t just here on Earth and in Pallimustus, right?” “You did say it was everywhere.” “Everywhere,” he echoed, his voice slightly haunted. “It’s a concept I’m still too limited to truly comprehend. There are worlds where the advent of the System caused uprisings. Revolutions. Holy wars. More innocent lives have been lost in the name of my power than there are people on the Earth. That’s a part of who I am now, and I have to live with that too.” “You know all that for certain? Have you been to those other worlds?” “Not yet. I’ve been learning what happening out there, more and more over time. The more I listen, the more I hear.” “Listen? To what?” He turned to look at her, his face troubled, then turned away again. “To prayers,” he said.

Catfan

She could be an antihero. Her invasion might be intended to try to fight off an even worse threat.

Max Lopo

Whut? Why the hell does knowledge want to invade earth? That is infringing on Dominion turf by the way. And War, Invasion, Conquest, Expansion, and Acquisition. If they exist. Hell there were like 5 gods who could have pretended to be Purity, one of them something as obscure as "disguise". And she couldn't even TELL people because that would infringe on their domains. The hell she wants with earth? If it's about the relic, she KNOWS where it is. A stealthy team to nab it would be smarter. So what gives? Is she dumb?

Trey

speculation time! so if i’m remembering early story stuff with knowledge correctly, she invades people’s minds to take their knowledge and decides what they are allowed to disseminate in pali for the good of the world i think? so she doesn’t mind invading and she also thinks she knows best for everyone. she wants to control the flow of knowledge between both worlds maybe? and maybe this weird circumstance of pali and earth being twinned worlds that are connected will let her cross over and gain more power, making her get god premium. who knows what that would really grant her but i feel like she’s gonna have a white savior mindset here. say it’s all for the best of everyone and the power she gains is just a side benefit and not why she’s doing this.

Big I

Called it, I knew Knowledge was going to invade. I wonder what Travis's wife is going to do

Stephanie Washburn

Knowledge was only evil in Jason's head because Jason was being an immature #$&$ who thought insulting other people's religions, without actual basis in local facts, was cool. Then because she tried to help but her priests were bad at people and she couldn't just tell them. Not *wouldn't* just tell them. Could not. Gods have more flexibility, interacting with their followers. They can't just be a dear and break binding agreements about what they're allowed to share.

SqrlyGrly

Or Travis. Isn't he a priest too?

SqrlyGrly

Soooo.... Does anyone else think that Knowledge coming to earth might be a good thing? Deception and Lies have already been running rampant and causing a ruckus. How much worse can she make it? Is she planning to force conversion with a sword or just set up temples?

BloodStorm

I just want to know what Travis is going to do once he knows his wife was really a spy against earth

Kristy Riedel

The Palli god of Noreth's contractor was specifically never named, which made me doubt that it was Purity anyway.

Pierce

Everyone sees this as a fight. Maybe it’s the next steps in an even larger game and knowledge is, as usual, 10 steps ahead Or she’s just a greedy arrogant god who’s upset with her lot. Maybe told Purity how to off himself

Pierce

Maybe the ooooold messenger planet will be spawned right next Pali, and she’s trying to escape

Darkdragon

I had this thought a while ago but what is purity wasn't the one who came to earth setting up the grid as it was mentioned before that the builder gave the gods knowledge of how to go to other worlds, also the knowledge required to make the grid would have been crazy Farah did say it had to be at least a diamond ranker behind it. It was confirmed this chapter

WathelBroaggie

No idea what her motivation is, but she doesn't "invade people's minds" lol. She's knowledge, so is aware of all knowledge in pali. If someone on pali knows something, knowledge does too. It's not something she's actively doing, just a side effect of her nature, that nature being a bunch of authority with the aspect of the concept of "knowledge".

Trey

thanks for the correction, been a long while since i read those earlier chapters lol

GREAT4040

I don't think so. At least I can't remember that being the case, Gabrielle sure but not Travis.

Tim

Welp, guess that would make me wrong. Huh. Also, Colin is never not best boy.

shigawire

Deities end with their universes. Maybe she doesn't want to.

jeffrey niski

I just find it hard to care if knowledge takes over earth or not. Jason can just take his people into his world and then there is no conflict. He moves on from this shitty useless planet.

Adamanus

Why would Knowledge even want to be a god of Earth? Why would a witch-hunting religious extremist Early Modern Earthling join the church of Knowledge?

Michael Romo

Knew since they asked if Gabrielle knew

Zachary Blevins

He is an astral being he can de attack attacked directly I in the astral No I don’t think you can be destroyed. He’s not immortal he’s eternal. But he can be delayed or distracted the most important thing to an immortal being or an eternal one his time it’s the one thing that really limits their power And Jason has already done something to stop it that’s why the sand sent it avatar to see Jason he did something it involves time manipulation. They avatar talk to him out of doing it so now he’s at 10 years to think of something else

Parker Bond

More people with more knowledge means more power for her?

Madeline Mckean

He’s not the GAB of the cosmic throne.he was when he fixed it but then gave up that power that’s why the great astral beings chose Jason to fix the throne also even if he still could wield its power the other astral beings would stop him. What he is the astral being of is the system and the ramifications of that are still to be seen

Youkai-sama

Jason's a whole-ass Universe! Why you trying to compare his resources to the power structure of a single 🌍, Anna? 😝

Youkai-sama

Knowledge's God-trait is [All knowledge is Mine, psionically, instantly]. A SCIENCE ✊🏿 based 🌍 to sink her claws into will make sure she Never fades. Greedy Colonizer bitch. Poor Travis.

Arieh Sochaczevski

Biscuits! Why does Jason keep calling them Gods? He’s only causing himself more trouble. They’re transcendent beings that are emergent embodiments of specific ideals, necessary to the balance of magic in the mortal world.

WallacetheNPC

I noticed the lack of a name but didn't connect the dots. Good job.

Max Lopo

1) Gods can 100% communicate to individuals. And while yes, she might be restricted on giving context or reasons due to encroaching on other gods domains, she can functionally sidestep the problem. As she did when she prepared armies. So talking to her priests has even less problems because THEY ARE HER PRIESTS and dont ask"why". If they are being garbage she can ABSOLUTELY tell them to can that noise without giving a reason. And they would obey. Because they are PRIESTS. She CHOOSE to be an ass giving empty platitudes as reasons. 2) Turns out he was completely right in dissing the gods, because they are all as flawed as people, if not more so due to being basically sapient computer programs. They skirt the rules when they want, and are complete ass when they feel like it. Death did not need to ask for payment, he was already gaining a LOT from Jason's actions. It CHOOSE to be a small petty shit to "teach a lesson", because Jason completely nailed it when defined them as parasitic semi sapient blobs of magic. Dominion is a gaslighter extraordinaire who ultimately focus on his gain. Same with knowledge. The interest they have in Jason is completely self serving. Hero is the only half decent one and the dude is MISERABLE to the point of being borderline suicidal. Earth doesn't have them, and it works just fine. So he wasn't being an ass insulting them without "local context". He was RIGHT and it irks you because he wasnt being nice about it. Respect is a funny thing, it is to be earned. Slapping etiquettes like "religion" or "culture" on provenly piles of garbage and pretending people respect them simply because others hold them dear is not respect, it's an aggressive demand fueled by stupidity. It's not good. People who do that are bad people. Baaaaaaaad people.

StrudelHalfBaked

IIRC, Raythe told Jason that Gabrielle wasn't aware of Knowledge's plans

WallacetheNPC

Yeah, I feel this. Also, Jason hears the prayers. Double Yikes.

WallacetheNPC

Is it weird that we didn't see this deal? It happened off-screen, if I remember correctly. If it did happen off-screen, is Jason a trustworthy source?

conman 2324

I've got to say, I've been a huge fan of this series since the beginning and never really got hung up on anything until now. First, Clan Asano randomly got the power to cure monster cores, which was the whole plot for Purity's artifact, so is that story/plot just dead now? And now this with the Goddess of Knowledge. Maybe I'm just missing something, but it doesn't make sense to me, and I feel like the story is really bouncing all over the place.

Stephanie Washburn

The thing is, Jason wasn't talking shit about them after all that happened and he knew what he was saying. He was being a shit in the early books because of how organized religion works on Earth. And then because he wanted magic lady to be his friend and work for free because he asked in the rudest way possible. Meanwhile when she tried to help him, he spat in her face. Giant cosmic people are allowed to have their own goals, and to want to achieve their own goals on the side while they help you out. This thing about Knowledge being the big bad behind everything though came out of nowhere and feels like a "duh, the nice lady Jason was pointlessly suspicious about turned out to be evil all along".

Philipp Battenberg

Ah, yes, just as Shade advised. Rescue the people he cares about and wash his hands from Earth.

Philipp Battenberg

Well, one idea that came to mind: What if Knowledge conquers Earth to *prevent* the spread of knowledge, or at least contain it. If she has full control of the access to the Bridge, she can bar information flowing one way or another. And to guarantee control of the Bridge, she just conquers the world, so that no opposition can rise to drive her off.

Crystal Donak

Anna would know that Jason hears prayers. Plus she has been working with him now..hoe many years have they jumped ?? This book will need a good edit for continuity before it goes to audible. Understandably with the time and illness in-between. And it's said with love and support.

Kristy Riedel

I don't know how many times you have read or listened to the books, but as someone who literally listens to them on a constant loop I can tell you that there is a solid foundation for everything that is happening now. As I read each new chapter I can mentally link it to previous books because I listen to them again with every new piece of confirmed lore. The clues are there to support the results we are seeing now. I recommend reading the end of this book in the next month or so and then listening to the books again with these revelations in mind. Once you know the destination, the way points become quite clear.

Kristy Riedel

He calls them gods because that is what they call themselves, and what the people of Palli call them. Jason can explain them as transcendent manifestations of various concepts for Earth sensibilities, but we need to be respectful of the beliefs on Palli if we want to make friends rather than holy wars.

Kristy Riedel

I wish Truth was coming to this planet. Everybody has knowledge these days, but most of it is false.

Kristy Riedel

I don't think that Jason sees the gods of Palli as 'evil', just that he sees them as being as fallible as anyone else and so not worthy of blind faith and worship. He can praise somebody for their good traits, like Healer for caring about healing people, but won't turn a blind eye to their failings, like Healer letting people suffer because he wants to give his priests a chance to choose to be good people. He doesn't want to worship a god or be a god because he understands that there is no perfect being.

Stephanie Washburn

And that's fine. I definitely agree that this is how Jason probably sees things now, upcoming invasion aside. My post was originally supposed to be a reply to someone else acting like they always knew Knowledge was evil. And that's.... Ridiculous. Knowledge was the one helpful god for the longest time and put up with Jason being a terrible frat bro for the longest time. Her not being able to help, or not wanting to help without also getting something else done at the same time does not make her evil. Like on my most recent read through it was just time after time where she offered to help and Jason was an ass about it.

Kristy Riedel

That's why I thought he might imprint on the grid and kind of accidentally turn Knowledge's tool to her own downfall.

Kristy Riedel

He has agreed not to use time travel to fight her. He has not agreed to not come up with some other ingenious plan at the last minute.

Kristy Riedel

There is, and probably a GAB of corruption too.

Kristy Riedel

If we can't trust Jason then what's the point of life.

Idan tal

But.. his territories are there for eternity.. will he just refuse all the people who will try to escape to them?

Kristy Riedel

Healer can be a bit too chill, letting his priests go off the rails for so long when people are suffering.

Idan tal

Just reached book 7 again. When they talked about the huge holy wars the emergent of the gods caused, and how the gods just killed people left and right till they reached some agreements.. the gods, besides hero and the healer, are basically super natural AI powered by magic and running on the brains of their believers. The more believers= more power and influence over the world (which is why they fought and the only reason most of them care about the believers). Hero is depressed because he is running on the brains of believers that are dealing non stop with last resort struggles and heroic tragedies all the time.. not because he actually able to care about this. The god, like a really good AI ,that thankfully we do have yet, will talk in a way that will help them achieve their goals of maximizing their power.

Kristy Riedel

Don't you think the system is an OP way to spread knowledge throughout the cosmos that Knowledge should simply love?

Idan tal

If she is the first, she can try to become the only major god, with absolute control. That’s what all the gods fought for when they popped up and started their holy wars.

Wilson

The Evil king of the astral king castle guy did say that he wanted the artifact for some other reason. Then a while back Jason saved an adventurer with lightning healing powers that somewhat cleaned monster core gunk.

Wilson

If its an American Gods scenario and gods get their power from worship or the prevalence a whole new world of knowledge the internet etc could theoretically power boost her.

pyrite jester

I also have done repeat listening of the books and although I agree with you that there is a solid foundation for everything going on now. Travis did a very good job in misleading information particularly when it came to knowledge. Even i needed to go back and double check some stuff. A lot for the recent reveals have felt very abrupt and jarring. Not a smooth as Travis usually pulls off.

pyrite jester

I had to go back and check that myself. And although it heavily imply that they worshipped purity all north ever actually said was the builder made a deal with his god.

pyrite jester

I actually dont think Jason had much animosity for knowledge until she held back information about Farrah unless Jason joined her church and then tried to turn Rufus when it didn't work. Before that they actually worked quite well together. And I dont think any of her priests were bad, just blindly following orders on one occasion I think one even second guessed her but still did as told.

pyrite jester

I think she's able to due to its a different world with no gods so she isn't infringing on the others. Also although not our earth it's is based on it and people nowadays already basically worship knowledge and scorn faith. She's going to have hard time convincing some but the ones she does are already primed for service to her unlike just about any other god that might try to follow her.

Justin Edwards

So if Jason wants to save people's minds from knowledge he'd have to invite them all into his zones or his own planets? Is that how you win the fight? But just give up Earth?

Josh Vanderpool

I’m with you, I got a badge for listening to book 1 over 20 times on audible lol Idk if the purity artifact was used to change the grid (I missed a lot of chapter on here) but I’m so happy to finally know what was “next” cause it just kept getting worse for Jason lol

StrudelHalfBaked

They didn't "randomly get the power to cure monster cores." Carlos has been working on it for a while, ever since Jason encountered Bussinger and discovered she has an essence ability that has been incrementally clearing the monster core residue from herself. Ch 980 is when they first run the test to confirm it.

StrudelHalfBaked

Also, Jamis Fran Muskar and the messengers still want the Purity artifact to become originals or something, so there's still something going on with that

Teddy Torres

I raised this concern with s friend of mine and he point out that Shirt almost died and he would have died with an unfinished series so we all have to keep that in mind as he continues. We love you shirt

Idan tal

Gods are just magical AI running on the brains of the believers (no need for it to be a priest, just appreciate the concept and you give them some juice to work with). They want more power to get more influence so they can spread and enforce their essence all around. The only reason they don’t fight all the time in 1 vs all is because they tried it and just decimated the world, so they made alliances to mitigate the damage to the wider population. Like the GAB, they are also influenced by the hardware they run on, so some show better aspects then others (hero and healer) but their core is uncaring and power hungry beings that will do whatever they can to upgrade and increase their power and influence. Considering Earth has no competition for them, its first coming get it all sort of situation. Knowledge is going to multiply her power by a lot (bigger population, with much more inclination for approaching wide spread knowledge), and the stable bridge will allow her to use this to effectively change Pali as well to become the biggest god in the two worlds.

Marter

I f*** new it!!!

conman 2324

Yeah, I remember, but to go 980 chapters with no way of removing monster cores besides Purity's artifact, then in what, 30 chapters, change that seems pretty random to me. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this series. I've listened to all the audiobooks literally dozens of times, and I have connected dots that I had missed before, and maybe I'll do it here by the time the series ends, but right now it just feels a little random to me. Like what's the point when you've already had an overarching story about it? But I digress, this is my favorite series I've ever read/listened to and I'll follow it to the end. Shirt has really made a masterpiece.

Soli116

I really hope there's a plan for Jason to go full Jason on Knowledge's expansionist ass.

Soli116

@Idan tal There are ways she could take them over. It was discussed in an earlier book about how gods' domains work.

Stephanie Washburn

Yeah he was more just annoying before that. But the thing with Farrah was also kind of like.... Look, Jason. Gods don't need to do stuff for free, no matter how painful it is for you, personally.

Liy

I love how Jason "I'm not a god" Asano is more than a bridge between worlds, but also a bridge between power tiers. Everyone, transcendent or mortal, is just another person to him.

Kaladin

Is there a reason they can't win the fight? It's there no alliances that could be made with hurricane princesses, with Dominion, or maybe with Orthodox angels? Knowledge probably has lots of enemies or at least others who would want part of the pie. I'm not sure why some decent political maneuvering couldn't balance the playing field. Also why can't Jason fight with Earth? Obviously he was played like a fiddle and needs to keep the bridge up, but I don't see why he needs to 'join' knowledge at this point?

Tobias

what if Knowledge wants to invade to be the sole god in/on earth but Jason has to step up and become / face he is a god (he is already hearing prayers). How would he then respond to this challenge? and would he even accept it within himself that he actually is a god on earth

Adrian

It was made fairly clear that recognizing the value of tribulation required the intersection of extraordinary (beyond normal gold rank) senses, an extremely specific knowledge set, and Providence. So, maybe not so easy to find even if it exists elsewhere. As for the story... It's was a nice way to retain the relevance of characters we would otherwise have to quietly say goodbye to. I shall suspend my disbelief! 😉

Schuyler Bostedt

Wait... is E.D.J.I. pronounced edgy?!?! **groan** At least Jason is a self aware drama queen. Also welcome back.

Brad Gammey

Looking at how Knowledge tried to "gift" Jason those early gifts and he was not having it, I can focus the lens a lot better on this turn.

Chloe Syddall

I think this is another fool your friends to fool your enemys move by jason, he set the memories that he cant fight in his prime avatar so knowledge wont get sus of his plans that his prime avatar doesent even know hes putting into place

socialleech

One path I see this going down is Jason figuring out (and maybe needing to personally accept) how to turn the entire Earth into one of his spirit domains. I could see the last book being similar to book 11 where it is basically a constant fight and battle between Earth forces + Jason (and Palli crew) and Knowledge's forces that culminates in Jason becoming/accepting that he is a, if not the, god of earth. Maybe it goes a step further. Jason is the Hegemon after all. I could see it ending with him having dominion over Earth and Palli as a top tier god. Dominion would be one of his subordinate gods. Maybe as the Hegemon he becomes even greater than that, like an universe Zeus? However this ends up coming together, I definitely think his godhood (and his attempts to deny it) will play a pivotal role in the next book.

Litmas

Glad to know I'm not the only one with the audio books on constant repeat!

Kalanaere

You're onto something with the Prime. Remember the King of the Evil Angels (too good of a title not to use it) even said that there are ways to lock down the Prime Avatar and thus Jason in his realm to prevent him from interfering. Knowledge would definitely have the info and know how to execute it and its' no secret Jason definitely doesn't know how to fight that. Just like he admits he can't really fight a being, a god, that is so much more powerful and knowledgeable than he is directly. He has to find a way to work around her and yank the planet out from under her without destroying it. The one thing I'm still not understanding though is why Dawn was soo adamant that they needed to be no less than Gold Rank to survive with Diamond being preferable. I do not recall any specific information being given saying the Gods have more or Less power over the non-diamond rankers.

Kalanaere

I think Dawn has a plan but what I don't understand is why they all needed to be at least Gold if not preferably Diamond by the time this event took place.

Kalanaere

Knowledge knows everything that is known on a planet. Think of the massive amount of Technology information she's going to gain if she makes an appearance on Earth?

Kalanaere

because that's literally what they are. and as Kristy said that's what everybody calls them. Once one peaks Diamond Rank they essentially have two paths to walk as I understood it. They can walk the path of the Gods essentailly biding themselves forever to the planet of their choice. The second path I don't think is explained quite as well for anybody not Jason but I feel like that is how one might start towards becoming a Lesser Great Astral being, subservient maybe to the big four they become Ascendants but not Gods so to speak. Jason though took a third rough, he's an Original and became an Astral King while still Mortal and Half Ascendent until he at minimum hits Diamond rank which he likely will just skip through as if on a morning walk. We don't' really know much about Ascendant tier though.

Kalanaere

So take Palli which is nowhere near as Tech heavy as earth. It's been raised on Magic since the day the OG Builder created it and linked it with Earth. Now take Earth; Essentially no magic at all, evolved along those lines with super technological advances. Now it has Earth to Support Gold Rankers and soon Diamond Rankers too. Mix Magical Heavy Knowledge with Modern Day Technology of Earth and it damn near makes Knowledge and her forces unbeatable.

Kalanaere

Technically Jason has the authority to release control or release his claim on his territory. He merely would have to strike a bargain with Knowledge as to what said Territories and they are substantial would be worth to her. To gain Jason as an Allie over an enemy might be worth it to her. While some aspect of the whole thing confuse me, I don't think Knowledge wants to jsut vanishish. She is looking for a way to either break her shackles that bind her to a planet or at the very least ensure she has a planet to escape to should something go wrong. I'm fairly certain there are no Gods out there that reside over multiple planets

Marter

I think it might be because earth science is so different and some parts are wrong. Just because they don’t have a god knowledge to stop them from learning the wrong thing. I know it doesn’t want earth to tint the knowledge pool of her world so she’s just gonna destroy it instead that’s my theory anyways

ValkyriaObscura

That one wasn't him. It was originally Earth Joint Defence Initiative (which makes more sense) but the Americans threw a shitfit over it not being spelled 'Defense' and got the D and the J swapped instead. Clearly nobody tried saying it out loud before signing off on that decision... The troops did the rest :P

Addie

Knowledge's opposing concept is disinformation. She hates that even more than ignorance, and she was clearly aligned with Disguise. Humans on Earth really fucking go all in for disinformation from our religions to pretty much everything else. Also Knowledge probably still has that army.

Addie

And think about how much Earth religions must enrage her.

MrCynical

@Kalanaere Nobody is going to throw fists with the actual manifestations of gods. They will be fighting the priests and soldiers in service to Knowledge. Fighting a god would be like a normal person fighting a thunderstorm. There's nothing there to really hit and trying to just means you risk getting hit by a lightning bolt. The gods are restricted, just like they couldn't wipe out the messenger armies because they were "invited" in, they probably can't directly attack anyone on Jason's team unless Jason's team does something to somehow allow the gods to strike back. It's somehow going to be a proxy war.

MrCynical

Jason will literally outlive both Earth and Pallimustus. He is both more and less than a planetary god and will never be as limited as one so I don't think he could become one. And while is domains are an absolute barrier to gods, they are not barriers to gods' followers. Though his domains are a bit more restrictive with the malicious entrants having their skin melt off unlike most temples we've heard of.

Tim

Jason has, hands down, some of the best character development Ive read. And I will never not hear Heath Miller's voice as Jason...and Clive. Also, has Shirt spoken anymore on an estimate of how many books are left? I thought I read that he had originally planned 13, but since this is 13, any ideas on how far we're pushing it? 15 or 16 maybe?

Tim

It makes waaaay more sense now why Dawn couldnt say anything in Book 7...iirc...other than telling Biscuit to get stronger...because if they knew and tried to plan, Knowledge would obviously know all of anything they tried. And then we have the bridge, so Jason will be working for her in the sense that he has to keep her supply lines, the bridge, safe. And then we have the rules of intrusion which Rufus clarified for us that a god has to send their armies in to "sanctify" the grounds, as we seen Undeath do in the Brightheart city. Which means Jason cant be involved because he's now an Astral Entity rather than an Earthling. I think the only thing he could probably do is defend his personal spirit domains if they attacked. (Supposition on my part, ofc). Ooh, hopefully Book 14 will take us to Interstice for interdimensional politicking!

Likely only 14, unfortunately. In the last update post Shirt made a couple weeks back, he wrote, "After the big break, I want to dig right into book 14, which will probably be the final book of the series."

Tim

Ah dang, I remember seeing the post you mention but completely missed that. Thanks, Ill go back to it.

If information is power, and absolute power absolutely corrupts, then yeah, I guess this does make sense sadly 😄 Tftc 🍻

Holy f***! The imagination, it's a beautiful thing. I did not see this coming by any stretch! Gabrielle anyone?? Travis? Will Travis remain an ally? Thank you for the chapter shirt, f*** yes!

I KNEW IT! I knew her flirting with Jason was too quick way in the beginning. She knows Gods die with planets, but if she can get enough worshipers to live in Jason's spaces because he is eternal. Then she gets to live forever.

ABTelford

To those saying Knowledge taking over earth wouldn’t be that bad…she had to have worked with Purity and Deception to orchestrate the whole mess that has happened on palimustus in previous books. Therefore she’s responsible for billions of deaths on both planets. Thats what her rule will look like - therefore, it’s max evil. Every true villain thinks they are in the right.

StarkRG

I was one who was sceptical until we knew for a fact that she orchestrated it all, but you're right.

Jason has literally told Anna that he hears prayers. Was the last sentence of either a chapter perspective or chapter itself no more than 20 chapters ago
