In the atrium of the Asano Clan tower in Saint-Étienne, Jason stood between a lizard man and an elf, an arm around each of their shoulders. His grandmother took their picture and handed the elf back her phone. They thanked Jason before moving away to let the next person have their turn.

“Are you sure this isn’t too disruptive?” Jason asked Yumi as he looked at the queue. “Aren’t these people meant to be working?”

“Just be glad they’re not running for the hills at the sight of you. That video of you fighting Gerling and McKean didn’t fill people with heartwarming assurance.”

“Oh, when you turned into a bird!” the next person in the line said, a young man who couldn’t have been older than seventeen. “When that system message popped up saying ‘beware his wrath,’ that was so awesome! Is it true that everyone in the world saw it?”

“Everyone old enough for essences, yes,” Jason said.

“Was that part really necessary?” Yumi asked.

“It just happens,” Jason said. “I don’t have full control of the system yet. A lot of it is autonomic.”

“You mean automatic,” Yumi corrected him. “Autonomic refers to bodily processes.”

“The system is a part of me,” Jason told her. “Like a spleen.”

Eventually Yumi cut off the line, citing that Jason had a meeting to attend, which was true.

“It’s good that you’re doing that,” Yumi said as they rode up an elevating platform. “Word is getting out that a god is coming to start a world war, and people are nervous. Especially with rumours that you won’t be here to fight it. That’s going to shake a lot of people’s confidence, and not just within the clan.”

“I don’t like it either, Grandmother.”

“To be clear, Jason, I’m one of these very nervous people.”

Jason scowled at his feet.

“Can you explain to me,” he said, frustration thick in his voice, “since when was ‘it’s going to take me some time to do something about the warmongering god from another universe’ not a good enough answer?”

“People are scared.”

“You think I’m not scared?” he whispered, still staring at his feet. “Do you have any concept of what I’m walking into when I go back? That’s a god, Grandmother. Imagine that Zeus had been waiting for you to be born since the fifteenth century so he could mess with you for decades before forcing you to walk into an unknown and inescapable fate. Yes, I’m immortal, and you know what that means? I can’t die, not that I can’t suffer. If the goddess of infinite knowledge happens to be knowledgeable enough, she can put me somewhere I can be tortured forever. When this planet is dust, after the heat death of the universe, there I’ll be, enduring agony for all eternity. That’s hell, Grandmother. That’s what I might be walking into. A hell I can neither avoid nor escape.”

“Unless you give up on us all.”

“What?”

The platform stopped in an upstairs waiting area. People walked past, almost bumping into them without acknowledging their presence. Their eyes slid off Jason and Yumi as if they were figments of the imagination, caught in the corner of an eye. Yumi frowned, noticing the odd behaviour.

“Are you doing that?”

“I know what I mean to these people, Grandmother. I’m not going to let them see me throwing a tantrum. I’m using my aura as a privacy screen, and to have them ignore us.”

“You’re getting good at that. Are you sure it’s not mind control?”

“And what will you do if it is?”

“Disapprove.”

Jason stormed over to the nearest wall, Yumi trailing behind. Walls sprang up from the floor to create a small room around them.

“Jason, you need to talk to Arabelle Remore.”

“You think I haven’t? She doesn’t know how to give therapy to a god.”

“You keep telling people you’re not a god.”

“Well, I am, and more besides. What did you mean by giving up on you all?”

“I mean just that. You can abandon this world, right? It’s not that big a deal from a cosmic standpoint. All you have to do is leave humanity to their fate. Don’t go back, don’t fix the bridge and Knowledge won’t care about you.”

“I can’t do that.”

“Yes, Jason, you can. It just never occurred to you.”

“No, I mean I can’t do that. The more powerful you become, the more you lock in who you are. If I abandoned all of humanity and ran, I’d be undoing a lot of work I put into shaping my identity.”

“I know. The idea of running never even entered your head, even though you’re fighting a god. That’s who you are. Who you’ve chosen to be, Jason, and that’s what matters. Not what you are, but what you choose to be.”

“Exactly,” Farrah said, the cloud wall parting to let her in. “You are what you chose to be: the guy who puts himself between the bad stuff and the people. You made that choice, the same as me. The same as Rufus and Humphrey and even Belinda. The same as Gary. He quit, and somehow still managed to die doing it, because that’s who he was. Just like you. You can be a god, a great astral being or an astral king all you like, Jason. But before all of that, you’re an adventurer.”

The trio stood in silence for a long time before Jason finally broke it.

“What are you even doing here?” Jason asked Farrah. She flicked him in the forehead.

“We’re connected, dummy. You think I haven’t noticed you burning away like a lit fuse? I’ve been making sure that I was around when you finally went off, and here we are.”

“I just… all these years, and Earth keeps doing this to me.”

“Yeah.”

“That’s it? Yeah?”

“What do you want me to say, Jason? Last time, you had to do what was necessary because the people who should have stepped up didn’t rise to their responsibilities. This time, you’re the one with the responsibilities. So, live up to them.”

“It’s not that simple.”

“Of course it’s not. It never is. Except that it always is, if you’re willing to do what it takes. And you are, so harden up.”

Jason stared at her for a moment before stepping forward and collecting her in a hug. She returned it, shaking her head against his shoulder.

“You are so damn soft. How you survived on Palli I will never know.”

“If you’re unwilling to bend, make the world bend.”

“That attitude gets most people killed.”

“Most people don’t have to fight gods.”

“Most people don’t have the Geller and Remore families telling the local nobility not to kill the guy with the big mouth.”

“That does help.”

He let her go and stepped back.

“Thanks,” he told her.

“That’s my job, remember? You save the world from everything else, and I save it from you. And your moping. And self-pity. And rash decision making. And tantrums.”

“Yes, I get the idea.”

“And bad hair.”

“I have great hair!”

“You do,” she conceded. “It reminds me of Kaito’s.”

“Okay, I have a meeting to get to, so you can go away now.”

She flashed a devil’s grin and walked off, the wall once more opening to let her out.

“Farrah,” Jason called after her, and she turned to look back.

“Yeah?”

“Thank you.”

She nodded and left, the wall closing behind her.

“Are you alright?” Yumi asked him.

Jason looked from her to where Farrah had disappeared.

“Yeah,” he said, his voice much lighter than it had been. “I think I am.”

The new walls vanished, surprising some of the people in the waiting area outside.

“Jason, did I ever tell you that you’re my favourite grandchild?”

“No.”

“Well, I like my great-granddaughter more. Don’t let it go to your head.”

Jason chuckled as she marched off in the direction of the conference room and he trailed behind.

***

The clan tower in Saint-Étienne had many conference rooms, often with specialised features. Jason and Yumi arrived at one with magitech teleconference facilities, with a few chairs at one end of a table otherwise surrounded by floor projectors. In similarly outfitted rooms across the planet, people could project into the other rooms through ephemeral avatars.

“This room is so cool,” Jason said as they entered. Anna and Danielle were waiting for them, turning at their entrance.

“I don’t see what’s special about it,” Anna said. “It’s essentially a conference room with holographic chairs.”

“Yeah, like in Demolition Man,” Jason said enthusiastically. “I watched it again with Gordon and Taika last night. Honestly, it doesn’t hold up that well.”

“Nice to see you’re using your remaining time on Earth productively,” Anna said.

“Hey, I’m being productive. As we speak, I have avatars in three universes, talking to city officials, doing combat training, cooking negi butadon, taking a little girl who got lost home, pranking Emi’s husband into thinking I believe he’s having an affair and I’m going to murder him, convincing Itsuki to get marriage counselling, find a mango the right shape to fit in a—”

“I’m not sure how much of that I would categorise as productive,” Anna said.

“The list did seem to get sketchier as it went along,” Danielle agreed. “I don’t think I want to know what he is doing with that mango.”

General Mills entered the room, wearing an informal EDJI service dress uniform and carrying a briefcase. After greeting the others, he took a seat and started pulling notes from his case.

“Paper files?” Anna asked him.

“Digital can be a problem with sensitive material,” Michael said. “There’s a certain rabbit with magical hacking powers and a big mouth.”

***

“Now you’ve had time to process what’s coming,” Jason said, “I’m sure you have questions.”

The people projected around the table represented key nations and magical factions within the Earth Defence Joint Initiative. Without magical senses, it was impossible to tell the illusionary projections from real people. Jason was at the head of the table, with Anna and Danielle sitting to his right, while Yumi and Michael Mills were seated to his left.

Michael had been selected as the spokesperson for the EDJI member states, asking questions for the group instead of having them come from around the room. Along with being present in person, he had become known as someone who could handle Jason without triggering some meeting-ending debacle. The United Kingdom’s Minister for Energy had eventually been found, in a more or less healthy condition.

“I’ve been handed the talking points and questions the members want to go over, if that is alright with you, Mr Asano,” Michael said. “If you’re amenable, we’ll begin with some clarification questions, then move on to big-picture issues before exploring more granular queries at the end.”

“That sounds fine. Please jump right in.”

“Thank you. The first question is about the practical realities of the invasion. How will the earth be approached and what will the functionality of this bridge be?”

“A good question to start with,” Jason said. “The bridge between worlds connects two fixed points, one on each planet. On Pallimustus, that point is an island in the Storm Kingdom. You’re all familiar with Princess Zara and her Storm Kingdom contingent. What I have discovered is that the Church of Knowledge has essentially annexed the island and shut the kingdom authorities out.

“On Earth, that point is the well-known site in outback Australia. I was going to place it within one of my domains, but I was warned against that by Mr North, prior to his death. He was evasive as to why, simply saying that I would understand when the time came.”

“And do you?” Danielle asked.

“Yes. During my talk, I discussed the Laws of Intrusion. There are a lot of nuances to them. If I’d built the bridge leading directly into one of my domains, it would constitute, magically speaking, an invitation. She could invade the domains directly.”

“Wouldn’t that be good?” Yumi asked. “Your power here is godlike. Isn’t that exactly what we need if a god is invading?”

“As I said, there is nuance. Part of what makes invading my space so dangerous is that my territories aren’t just lines on a map. My dominion over them is a fundamental aspect of that land. Reality itself recognises my right to hold it. If I give someone an invitation, either literally or metaphysically, they are no longer intruders. I would still hold a lot of power in those spaces, but the rights of host and guest have metaphysical weight. My ability to harm them would be significantly diminished.

“Because the bridge does not lead into my domains, those territories can be used as bastions during the war. The one place that Knowledge cannot reach until she has seized everything else. Letting them in would have changed that.

“As to how the bridge works, dimensional travel is typically quite an ordeal. Even on Pallimustus it’s rare. Usually it comes from diamond-rank portal abilities that allow dimensional traversal.  Given the tiny fraction of adventurers who reach diamond, and the fraction of those with portal powers, that number is vanishingly small. There is also the problem of needing to have visited another dimension before you can open a portal to it.

“I say all this for context. The dimensional bridge is not a literal doorway or tunnel. Instead, it makes it possible to move between worlds with a relatively straightforward and resource-efficient ritual. Anyone with a handful of spirit coins and the ability to cast a simple silver-rank ritual could use it. It’s a cheap and efficient way to transit large numbers of people. Safely, I might add, which is far from a given with dimensional travel.”

“Is there a way to shut it down, or block one end?” Michael asked.

“There is,” Jason said. “As we speak, Clive Standish and Emi Asano are working on methods to impede access. I can tell you, however, that these are measure that can only stall, not stop them. Sooner or later — probably sooner — Knowledge’s church will figure out how to pump so much power through the bridge that it’ll clear the pipe, however heavily we block this end.

“But they will have to emerge at the site in Australia?” Michael asked.

“Yes. Obviously, that presents tactical advantages to our side that will make it hard for them to establish a beachhead. I suspect that once they force open the bridge, the first thing they will send though is a cluster of magical nukes, to wipe out anyone set up on the aperture.”

“Is that a metaphor for some large magical device?” Michael asked.

“No. Travis Noble developed a magitech nuclear device that was used to destroy a flying city. The Church of Knowledge can absolutely recreate it. How to respond to that threat will be for you to decide, since you’ll be the ones dealing with it. I’m happy to participate in any planning or preparation you might require of me, for as long as I remain on Earth.”

“I have some more questions about that,” Michael said, “but as they’ll getting into the nitty gritty, I’ll leave them for later in the discussion. The next point I would like to discuss is timing. From your briefing last week, you seemed to imply that the invasion isn’t possible at all until you return to the other world and complete construction of the magical bridge.”

“That’s correct. I assume your query is about why I don’t leave the bridge unfinished instead of completing it.”

“That is the question, sir, yes.”

Jason nodded.

“That’s a reasonable question, with a simple answer: I have to.”

I’ve spent years quoting Yumi “have I ever told you you’re my favorite grandchild” as one of my favorite lines in the entire series (personal reasons, it cuts deep) and then we get THIS?!?! Pardon me, I’ll just be crying over there. Tftc!

car6555

I love how dominion looks like the good guy compared to knowledge lol

mhaj58

I thought the chapter would be late because of Australia Daylight Savings. Maybe I’m reading the wrong calendar

Aaron Minster

Daaaaang even the thing with the nuke was plotting to invade!!!

Kallisti _

FM, I am so excited to 1) see the advancement of the storyline and 2!!) see how Stephanie Washburn b*tches and moans about it.

Unwillingmainer

Yeah, Jason really ought to force more on getting his head on straight. Because if he doesn't think Knowledge is going to play him like a fiddle, that description of Hell gets a whole lot more likely.

Dalth

I thought the bridge was already completed? He made the Earth anchor, then rode the magic from it to Palli, then eventually made the Palli anchor, then travelled back to Earth. Why would he need to go back to Palli again to finish the bridge?

Daniel Wills

I lol’d that someone else tracks the name. For me, it’s because I worked with a Washburn. And it’s good for all of us to bitch, moan, applaud, etc. We’re essentially a test audience before the book publishes. All comments help Shirt :)

Kallisti _

*snerks* That's fair. As for why I'm looking forward to her response, check the comments from 2 chapters ago.

Idan tal

This is different from the original description. Is it because the method they used at book 12 was less efficient than the tools he consumed that were supposed to finish the bridge on Pali right after the monster surge?

Skalias Pablo

The more we learn about the long held questions of the series, the more I don’t understand the big picture. What’s Jamis Fran Muskars’ agenda in all this? How does the original builders agenda making the twin universes fit into all this. How does vampire Thadwick fit into all this. Why are there so many “as above so below” parallels between the wider grand scale cosmos stuff and the twin universes. I need to comb over the entire series again once this book is wrapped up.

Raven

I am also confused why he has to go back

Ligeia

The US went on daylight savings recently, but Australia has yet to go off. So it'll change again soon.

Corwynder

I think the Earth side should have nukes pointed at their end of the bridge

Skalias Pablo

Not everywhere in Aus has daylight savings

Hayden Leech

I hope knowledge surprises him. Not an awful trap binding him to million years of soul shredding horror. But a really tempting offer or something. Knowledge knows that if she hits Jason too hard he is going to have Colin scour the planet in a few thousand years or whatever. Same as how Jamis didn’t want to set Jason on an eternal warpath against him I doubt knowledge wants that smoke either. Maybe Dawn is there basically waiting to snatch his prime avatar to interstice and sit on him until knowledge is done.

Catfan

Typos: "these are measure that can only stall," should be 'measures'. "as they’ll getting into the nitty gritty," should have 'be' before 'getting', or change 'they'll' to 'they're'.

Hayden Leech

I really hope we see interstice from Jason’s eyes

Skalias Pablo

I suspect Jason will be taken out of the picture the second he returns to Pallimustus and finishes the bridge. I doubt knowledge will do anything to his companions(within reason) lest she fight not Jason Asano but the Hegemon.

Kristy Riedel

Turns out that whichever relative of Zara's turns out to be the storm king (brother/cousin) was right to not want the bridge anchor in the storm kingdom. It sounds like shoot has already hit the fan with knowledge taking over the island. Wonder if she kicked out Travis and Farrah's company and put an end to mass communication in the process. Wonder how Gabrielle's faith will hold up to knowledge using the magical nuke that she and Travis invented to attack earth now.

WallacetheNPC

Ugh. the build up is taking forever.

Skalias Pablo

Knowledge definitely has to walk a tightrope lest she push Jason into doling out apocalypses the likes of which probably only she can imagine

Daniel Wills

It’s a back and forth on whether the best stories leave all these other unanswered threads, or if the best answer everything and tie it all up in a neat bow. Jamis Fran Muskar may be as simple as being born “artificial” such that he can never be an Original. He says as much when talking to Jason. To a degree, also, what would anyone be doing after billions and billions of years? Original Builder just wanted to futz around. Same as the other GABs. World Phoenix didn’t want to be the Boundary anymore, yadayada. All of which fuels Jason saying that Gods and GABs are people. I don’t think Shirt will tie everything up into a neat bow, and I don’t think he should anyway. We get to speculate and write fanfic lol

Skalias Pablo

I don’t think he will nor should tie everything up in a neat bow. But the things I outlined have way too a solid throughline to fall to the wayside

Devin Williams

Okay... So we assumed that Jamis (Evil Angle Emperor) wanted the Cure for crazy vampires to give to Thadwick. What is that in exchange of? Is it the purity artifact? Or is it for the Messenger Slayer sword Thadwick Swiped in the Astral Space? If it's the later. A thought occurs that Jamis is taking that weapon off the board before Knowledge can use it agaisnt Jason. Remember, messenger methodology is that they are superior to even gods. So wouldn't Jamis want Knowledge to fail agaisnt Jason? As Knowledge is unworthy of Jason's time?

Brayden

He made it more stable not complete usually only diamond ranks with portal power can travel dimensions with the bridge now people could probably still travel it like strong enough gold rankers and certain expensive rituals but it’s a waste of resources for Knowledge to invade with a partial bridge when she knows it’s going to be complete soon. It’s not worth it.

the one who reads

Because the bridge isn't really complete he's made the anchors yes and he's rude the aftermath of that when the magic influence in them came active the world Earth has become stable enough to hold a diamond ranker upon becoming diamond rank or just before diamond ring he needs to ride the bridge back palli to stabilize the bridge instead of creating two connections he stabilizes the bridge with the passage because it's very nature and his connection to it should act as an anchor making it so that the bridge is complete put it this way when a bridge in our world is built they typically either build one end or the other end but the most common way to build a bridge and make sure that it is in direct line with one another is to build both sides the only time you don't really see that is with rope Bridges and even then both sides are typically built anyways at around the same time but those bridges aren't complete until the very middle component the stabilize in factor is put in place as well he built both sides of the bridge now he has to add the stabilizer so that when people pass back and forth they don't get destroyed or melted by the pure energy of the astral around them I don't know if you noticed or not but when he was coming back to Earth he could stick his legs out but no one else would do that off of his boat he can do that because his bodies able to withstand the forces and it is very nature allows him to do so and live and survive outside of reality for moment or so but no one else is willing to do that his boat acted like the stabilizer temporarily for both ways to complete the bridge he needs to ride the path again with or without using his cloudship upon doing so he'll probably be diamond rank and the world will be fully stabilized and can handle entities of that level and fully have gods start to appear so long as the goddess of knowledge doesn't get the way she wants here I can give a better example Imagine it this way you have a power source and you have a light one and the other were built but they need something in between what we can consider wires and components right those are the stabilizers he has built both anchors now he needs to stabilize it now he needs the metaphysical bridge as an anchor point he didn't actually have that bridge specifically he just had me anchors the thing is still dictate exactly where one end of the bridge is to the other once he crosses the bridge one more time he will set the final component and the bridge will be completely complete what that means is it'll be safe for people to travel back and forth without having to worry about being melted by the astral Note: I did this whole thing with speech to text so if you're wondering where all the like? And where all the periods and other symbols are they're not going to be there

Tavon LaChapelle

Maybe knowledge knew Jason would have to build a bridge and that intelligent people from earth would look into it during the messenger summoning which she knew would drag those people back to pali so she would have all that information from earth

Andrew P

If he ends up taking some Authority from Knowledge before this is all said and done, I wonder how that would present for Jason. More info in his status?

Corvid

That does raise an interesting question. Inviting the great astral beings into his soul put him in danger of having his willpower and mind decimated by them, even if he did set the rules of engagement. But also, him slamming the door behind reaper and phoenix then grinding their authority into a tasty smoothie was noted as one of the only ways to actually hurt a gab. Undeath's avatar in his spirit realm had a similar effect too, he had to tap the hegemon just to keep a fragment of a god's power from subverting him in there. Astral Kings reign supreme in their own kingdoms, but would her army still be able to try and invade it if he opened the door same as his domains?

Ligeia

I still think Gordon is going to play a big part in bringing Knowledge down, too. Remember his incantation!

Adrian

Unclear. But it was never explicitly stated that only one visit per side would be required to finish the bridge. Not to mention... I know it's magic, but it doesn't seem unreasonable that a permanent interdimentional bridge tied to two worlds and a unique magical being jury rigged into working after years of study by a mad genius (Clive) might require a little tinkering to get right 😉

Steve Parks

Do the gods deal in Authority? I thought that was only for astral beings?

Andrea W

And because he promises to do it to stabilise the earth in perpetuity. And Jason doesnt break promises....

Steve Shelden

I disagree. It kinda feels that way cause he posts 3 times a week unless the moon is in retrograde and the month has two vowels in it, in which case it’s an off month. But this arc of the story is cruising along steadily IMHO.

Steve Parks

From the context of the rules, that would still be an invitation, I believe

Steve Parks

Oof. Mutual assured destruction scenario?

Steve Parks

Tyftc! Excited to see where Shirt is taking us.

WindGunner

Bridge not done. If bridge not done world go boom. To get bridge done must go other side.

Steve Shelden

Last part of the bridge formation

Andrea W

I love Dominion, he is the equivalent of the Ministry of funny walks in a god! "I love that guy!" makes me chuckle everything I read/hear it.

Andrew P

He stole some from the avatar of undeath, shaped with knowledge from God of death to get the aura divine ability.

Dalth

I’m honestly expecting the sword to be used against Knowledge. The reason Jason exploded Boko was because the prototype sword couldn’t keep feasting on his soul and magic because his soul is a universe and infinite. Even if it’s a diamond rank version of the same type of sword, it will still eventually reach a limit and explode as well. It might be used on Jason to literally keep him pinned in place and unable to move for a few years before that explosion happens though? And although Jason’s soul is infinite, Knowledge doesn’t likely have a soul, but she should have Authority, which is needed for miracles and for her to interact with the mortal world. And that shouldn’t be infinite, otherwise why would astral entities like Shade, Gordon, and Colin need to become familiars to gather their own Authority? Death and Healer both said they expend influence and save up Authority to intervene.

Dalth

It’s been stated that Healer leaves divine marks around sites of his miracles, in dust and sand, and Boris explained that they are Healer’s specific flavor of Authority. Happened when they were in Jason’s soul fighting the Undeath Avatar. So I would assume yes, Gods deal with Authority, probably gathered through worship, the same way familiars generate their own when summoned from the Astral, which is how Shade sanctioned himself. Edit: the reason Great Astral Beings are separated from the “nameless” astral beings was also described because the Great ones generate their own Authority slowly, which is why their only currency is favors and deals. Stated during the whole fight in Jason’s soul to fix the throne.

Steve Shelden

Holy forking shirt, this comment made me go back digging. Zealots terrify me. And why a zealot would think this book was going to align with her mindset after 1020 chapters… 🤷🏻‍♂️

David Harshman

Gods are literally made of Authority. Specifically, infinite Authority over their domain.

RonGAR

"The simple answer: I have to, because it's a plot device in a story written by this god call Shirt" ------------------ Why does he 'have to again'? The world will blow up if he doesn't or something like that? -------------- Sooo the Storm Kingdom got conquered eh? Well, well, well.... seem like Jason x Zara's relationship can continue after all. No more kingdom, no more royal family, no more rules that says you have to be ashamed of bringing home the guy you once lied about and said you were betrothed to, then ended up actually liking when he came back from the dead. LOL ----------- Well... here is a nugget of information that leads to a major question. IF Jason has avatars all over Pallimustus, and Knowledge knows ALL about everyone. Then shouldn't she know the plans Jason is preparing on earth through those same avatars??? I know she is not a mind reader, but if Jason is 'coordinating' with the adventure society about his upcoming actions, then Knowledge automically should know what is happening as well, correct??

RonGAR

Awww how cute... look who is discussing my ideas I had a few chapters ago. Good on both of you! Yes I have a feeling Jamis will be the 'dark horse' in this situation and 'save the day' when all hope seems lost. Sorry, but I don't think Farrah will be up to it. She thinks too small.

Crystal Donak

I totally thought so too. He did the thing on earth the. Went back to Palli to finish it..and he did. Ans then he brought his crew back. Why does he have to go back again? WTF. Also. We need a chapter or an Epilogue chapter woth Emi's wedding. Just saying.

GuyWhoReadsALot

Demolition Man is awesome and doesn't just hold up well but is as relevant today as it was in the 90's. I'm disgusted with Jason and I'm not sure I care about his media opinions anymore.

GuyWhoReadsALot

His inane opinion on Demolition Man shows how out of whack his head is.

Texanhick20

They do. They generate it by being gods, and the quantities they generate are good for Miracles on a global scale. GAB's on the other hand can work in much larger scales. It's how Hero creates his Heroes Brew that killed Gary, it's how Undeath was doing his stuff until Jason gathered it all up, stripped t he authority for his own use and gave the undeath energy back to STeve.

PapaJohn

Jason knows everything that is inside his avatar’s heads at this point. That’s why the GAB’s Prime vessels and Dominion put such an emphasis on Jason learning how to separate his God powers from his mortal vessel; even his memories.

PapaJohn

All transcendents use authority. That includes gods.

Brisingaer

Knowledge seized the island directly. Contesting a large kingdom with multiple diamond rankers, fresh off a war with a mad god mind you, would be a massive waste of resources. She likely just planted her big army on the island and gave enough minor concessions the Storm King let it slide. Soramir is almost entirely hands off unless it comes to existential threats to his kingdom. Knowledge would know how to thread the needle and not provoke the local diamond rankers.

Brisingaer

I suspect it would go into the System. The System seems to be Jason's primary authority over the wider cosmos. It would likely lead to an upgrade in the information privileges of the System Administrator.

Stephanie Washburn

I think Knowledge took the small island, not the whole Kingdom (a kingdom of large islands, so I understand why it might sound like she took the whole thing). Jason has to because he agreed to do so, and then because he agreed to (Raith?) (Raythe?) the Time Lady's bargain about not messing with time, and then because Earth would be destroyed eventually if he didn't. I think Jason is bound to his word in the same way that Gods and Great Astral Beings are bound.

Stephanie Washburn

Wait... Wasn't it tormenting Erica, his sister's husband? Oh no. It's less funny if he's tormenting a sweet man who never knew Jason as a human. At least his brother in law has an appropriate level in Jason-Handling.

Stephanie Washburn

Gods are made of flavored authority. It's just linked directly to the planet they're from.

Stephanie Washburn

I'd suspect that Knowledge or the Magic Society or Clive's college might have taken over the mass communications network. But if anything, Knowledge benefits from the spread of information, which would generate authority for her to use. So I highly doubt she would just destroy the thing.

Stephanie Washburn

Yeah, I do wonder a bit how Gabrielle would react to Knowledge abusing the technique that Travis gave to them in good faith. I feel like it might really depend on how many bystanders get hurt. Gabrielle strikes me as a good woman who just doesn't get along with Jason sometimes (and who is understandably a bit concerned about Jason's level of spying on her colleagues). It is also entirely possible that her short and dogmatic answers are the result of not being able to process such a life changing truth in a day or two. Hope is a wonderful source of self-deception, even if the lie usually doesn't last long.

Ligeia

I know, but clearly wherever Shirt lives does because the chapters' arrival has consistently tracked with going on and off it st both ends.

Feu et Glace

3 universes? Is that Palli, Earth, and his Astral Domain?

WathelBroaggie

I noticed that too, and it got me thinking. I'm willing to bet that he does mean pali, earth and his kingdom, but it's something to keep in the back of our heads. Theres a chance it gets revealed later that he's sent an avatar (or multiple) out into the cosmos to be better prepared for the invasion, probably via advanced tech and/or magic, plus knowledge/advice from other diamond rankers or transcendents. Do I think that's likely the case? No, to be honest, but it's a possibility.

blucube 14

Thanks for the chapter!

Kristy Riedel

She would have to subvert the communication system to keep it from being used against her. Always take out enemy coms.

Kristy Riedel

Knowledge annexed a previously uninhabited island, she did not conquer a kingdom. And Jason can make avatars that have limited knowledge and purpose, so avatars on Palli are doing Palli things with no earth knowledge.

Kristy Riedel

Farrah's purpose is to balance Jason and help him hang on to his humanity, not to win battles.

Kristy Riedel

It feels that way because I read faster than he writes. Reading books published in this format takes a patience not needed in regular publishing.

Kristy Riedel

If the Magic Society somehow took over Travis and Farrah's company we would find out what the wrath of the defier can do.

Kristy Riedel

I think that Travis could work with Clive, Farrah, and Emi to shield the bridge terminus when the magic nukes come through, or to contain the damage from nukes we deploy against armies coming through. This plan does have the flaw of an unavoidable choke point.

Kristy Riedel

Yes, all but one of us can live without learning about the mystery box Jory got in the Reaper trials. But the major through lines need either resolution or separation from the conclusion of this series. We could have spin offs for decades with all the minor characters we have enjoyed. (Adventures of Rhet and Jamie) lol

StrudelHalfBaked

It doesn't seem like the entire Storm Kingdom got conquered, just that the Church of Knowledge took over the isolated island where the bride was built. I also don't see Knowledge trying to do conquer the kingdom, given they have Soramir Rimaros and other diamomd rankers, and would be a whole mess of its own. And Jason doesn't have "avatars all over Pallimustus". He has avatars within Rexion. They can't leave his spirit domain, and Knowledge doesn't have access to any knowledge within them. If people interacting with his avatars leave the domain, she'll get their knowledge, but I'm sure Jason is aware of that and isn't leaking any significant info.

John Durrett

Lets not forget that Shirt is still recovering no matter that he's publishing chapters now.

John Durrett

What we dont want is a situation where it blows up the bridge, tears a whole in the fabric of space time and ends the universe.

Vodyinoi

I had this same thought. Where did "I have to go back to Palli again to finish it... again?" come from?

Vodyinoi

It didn't seem like Jason had avatars all over Pallimustus. I think he probably had avatars in his domain (Rexion) and Knowledge doesn't get the uploads from people who know things in his domains. I think.

Vodyinoi

I still don't get the 'why' of all this for Knowledge. Sure, there's a whole other world of knowledge to get but everything she's gone through to get there seems like overkill, in the worst way. Deceit/Deception/Disguise - that whole thing made sense. Part of the mandate. Knowledge? It seems like stretching the 'mandate to gather and share Knowledge' way, WAY too much. Especially given she's picking up a guaranteed eternal enmity. If she doesn't manage to nail Jason down - and she has to expect she won't, given his track record - then he'll spend whatever length of time it takes to end her, especially if anything happens to his friends or family. I can see him finding a way to extend the lifespan of a universe just to have the extra time to make sure she cops it before the universe ends and it's at his hands that it happens. He's not usually so tied into revenge, but this like what he said about the Messengers and having billions of years to end them. I'm sure it's in there, somewhere - Shirt's really good at the oblique hints - but I just don't see it, yet.

Vodyinoi

I kind of hope so. Big time. It would be so apropos.

Ibram Gaunt

I think it’s referring to how the media landscape in the story has changed, with what magic can do and such i bet there are waaaaay better film technology options for the old film to not hold up so well anymore. Shirtaloon is just not making the mistake many writers make by having media being basically frozen at the moment the story extends beyond what we have irl.

Esther Prenosil

The gods are literally made of Authority🤨

Kristy Riedel

Shirt is definitely a GAB, not a god. That way we can all join the cult of the loon. Sounds better than church of the loon (and we have enough of those irl)

Malnayil

Id like to see what people think about this too... cause im with you, what's her deal?

Kallisti _

Right?? Jason has been perfectly from the beginning: blasphemy is kind of his thing (b1ch25) and he's waving the flag for secular morality (b1ch34).

LEMON

Knowledge is not too knowledgeable if they think it is a good idea to oppose Jason

Damaddino

Knowledge wants to be THE god of Earth. The single, solitary, exclusive, All Powerful GOD of earth. She’s basically doing the same thing as The new Builder. He’s creating a domain for him to sit around in without needing a host. Knowledge is taking Earth for her domain.

Mist Sparrow

I still think ember if gonna get involved with trapping jason to punish shade.

Chiqui Joy

I wonder if this isn’t actually Knowledge. We’ve already seen Disguise pretend to be Purity. What is this is Deceit? As for what happened to Knowledge if a dark god is mascarading as Knowledge… no idea

Raven

I am curious if the order of the reaper is going to be coming into pay to combat knowledge. It has been mentioned how they would put the right person on the right path and the diamond rangers had said he wasn't ready yet they would wait..

Zach

I’m a bit confused. I’m sure it is part of the Laws of Intrusion, but doesn’t Jason have a way to circumvent the bridge using his domains? He can travel between Palli and Earth by passing through to his domain and exiting where the city he rescued was? Why can’t he then just send an army of avatars through to Palli to attack and disrupt the invasion? Of course it wouldn’t work forever, but it could delay right? And it wouldn’t risk him being trapped?

phillip page

His avatars can't exist outside of his domain. So trying to use them to disrupt knowledge wouldn't work since she can't invade his domains currently anyway.

Kristy Riedel

It was mentioned several times that he can go from one domain to another in the same universe only at his current rank. I think he needs to be transcendent (diamond at the least) before there can be portals between all his domains regardless of dimension.

Kristy Riedel

Yes, writing is harder and takes longer than reading. If I nearly died I would be reading much more than writing. Lol

Kristy Riedel

That would certainly tie everything up in a bow.

Jordan Jones

That’s another thing. I’m not sure there is a distinction between a “dark god” like Deceit or Undeath if actions such as this one are somehow, technically, in some way, “allowed”. I’ve just been sitting back and waiting since the reveal to find out more since this is strange to me. Eternal enmity with a true immortal seems…unwise. Also, Jason’s fear of eternal torment doesn’t make sense to me. An avatar being trapped for eternity somehow some way…I could see that. But I don’t see why he would not have the power to voluntarily remotely dissolve that avatar as his “true self” is inviolable. I know it is an expression of ignorant fear as his opponent is, after all, the god of knowledge, I’m just saying personalizing the threat to “Knowledge could permanently incapacitate an astral king” does NOT make sense with…basically the entire lore around souls and what kind of threat an astral king actually is, namely, that they are eternal and any “victory” against them is temporary. You simply can’t reach them to fight them while in a universe, and even you could go to where they are…you wouldn’t want to, even if you’re a Great Astral Being.

Ligeia

He said diamond rankers with a portal power can move between universes, so he'll be,able to portal between Earth and Pallimustus after his next rank-up. But that will be too late to help with Knowledge's invasion of Earth, presumably. We have no idea how long he has to reach diamond, but probably years more.

Malnayil

The point he was making us that he doesnt know. He doesnt know enough about what it means to be on that level, he's still not even diamond rank, which seems to make a difference with his transcendent power... and even as lacking in power as he is, compared to other GCBs, he has the opportunity to trap both the world phoenix and the builder in a way they could not escape and feed on their power, had he chosen no to let them go, and its knowledge, he knows he cant possibly out game her, even without the power discrepancy... she is older, more experienced... and litters knows everything anyone else knows who has ever been to palli

Worros

Tinfoil hat on: I suspect the sword is a tool to convert any Authority to Purity flavoured Authority, ie. a tool to rapidly rebirth himself. This was intended to be used in the astral space - probably on Diamond rank golems. Reaper cult or Knowledge priests then seized it during the assault and built its prison.

Vodyinoi

This is a really good question. Jason doesn't have any authority so trapping his Avatar with some portion of his already-mentioned-as-unlimited power in it won't give her anything. It's not like when he was trapping the Phoenix and Reaper. He'd still have his primary consciousness, which is his soul universe, and keep doing business as usual to a great degree. She could hamper his ability to swan about acting like a loon (his words :D) but he'd still be a factor and, eventually, he's going to get free and then she's a goner.

Isaac Scharff

Also, I could have sworn in Demolition Man it was a bunch of screens, not holograms. I distinctly remember the villains face appearing on all of the screens to make a point

Seth Satterwhite

I’m pretty sure it was mentioned that the gods are basically authority personified while the astral beings are able to have a restrictive power over it

Frog

Could Jason leave a few shades and a Colin Clone on earth? Maybe the hivemind still can’t split dimensional boundaries, but Jason’s clearly can. It might disable his ability to use Colin actively in Palli, but he can project into Colin as an avatar with access to all his essence abilities, even if his Prime Avatar is somehow lost or trapped on Palli. That way he could have at least one domain to hold out in with his full dimensional control and defensive capability.

Arieh Sochaczevski

If that’s their plan, then Knowledge knows it, and has taken it into account.

Kristy Riedel

Omg. Knowledge is the original builder, completing her master plan.

Bryan

Man, I really don't get Knowledge's endgame. There's been so many points in the story where it hammers home how the gods don't view things like mortals do, and how they're aware they're going to not exist eventually because the planet dies out. Knowledge seems to be going to a lot of effort to make a permanent enemy to just be a singular god... For an indeterminite amount of time. Right now Earth doesn't have enough magic to sustain multiple gods, but in theory it eventually would, at which point she's back to where she started. Earth and Palli are the same, so their suns will burn out around the same time, so she's not giving herself more time. And in the process of all of this she's making an extremely dedicated enemy. Unless she can literally trap Jason until such time as she's dead and gone, he will likely find a way to remove her. This isn't even accounting for the fact that if she does come through and wipe the Earth clean in a holy cleansing to let only her and her people live there, what's stopping Jason from sundering the bridge and letting Earth get destroyed by the astral? All of her worshippers and her along with it, gone. It just feels like something is really not adding up in terms of the master plan here. Hopefully we get a villain monologue moment to explain the missing pieces.

J Holmes

IIRC, the screens rotate back and forth with where they're looking in a very comical manner.

Richard Bonds

I have said it before, and I will say it again: I friggin' LOVE Farrah! She and Clive are my favorite side characters not named Gary.

Kristy Riedel

Earth sucks, let Colin eat everything before going back to Palli. Use Jason's universe like Noah's ark.

Aizen Weeks

I am wrong, I'm sure, but I hold that Knowledge isn't Knowledge. Precisely because of your points.

Tavon LaChapelle

I haven't seen it but this is also like 40 years after now

Samuel Robinson

Jason has said over and over that gods are a lot like people. Over time she might have just felt like she wants to be more powerful. The collective knowledge of every sentient being has got to be filled with an enormous amount of power hungry people, especially in a society like Pallimastus where power is everything.
