“You have to do it?” Michael asked.

“Yeah,” Jason said. “The whole process was incredibly involved. When the original Builder was replaced, one of the new Builder’s tasks was resolving the mistakes of his predecessor. But great astral beings work through mortal agents, rather than direct intervention, as their touch could annihilate galaxies. The new Builder created a door through which someone could enter a liminal space in which they could alter the very foundations of physical reality. Then he left it for someone to find and use.”

“That seems reckless.”

“The new Builder is reckless, for reasons that I can explain later if anyone especially wants to know. Also, I believe that the Builder was manipulated to put this door into play by the goddess of Knowledge. In return, the Builder was aided in an invasion, much the same deal as was made with the messengers. The Builder’s invasion of Pallimustus immediately preceded that of the messengers, in fact.”

“What did Knowledge get out of this?”

“I wasn’t the first to use the door. It was the tool the Network founder employed to do all the things he did. Then he left it behind. In fact, he sealed it in such a way that only someone who had left Earth and returned could claim it. He destabilised the world to raise its magic level for the goddess of Knowledge, then left the tool for the next outworlder. He knew that someone would be sent to stabilise the Earth when it was ready.”

“And you used this door?” Michael asked.

“I did. The Network founder created the Tiwari Clan to prepare for my arrival and claiming of the relic. It was a bumpy process, but it more or less worked out. I slowly learned to shape reality, and was changed in the process. Part of my journey into becoming what I am now, and what I will become in the future.”

“Which is what?” Miachel asked.

“Complicated,” Jason told him, his tone making it clear that there would not be follow-up questions.

“None of this explains why you need to complete the bridge,” Michael pointed out.

“It’s the beginning of it. Using the door, I was able to undo what the Network founder had done. The link between worlds was returned to roughly its original state, but centuries of damage remained. This planet had become fragile and in need of repair. To facilitate that repair, the World-Phoenix created a similar relic to the door. This one would enhance the link between worlds, allowing the same power that had done the damage to instead repair it.”

“By building a bridge,” Michael said.

“Precisely. Even with the relics, though, the process was complicated. I had to start by using the Builder’s door to create an anchor on Earth, then go to Pallimustus and do the same thing there. Then I had to create the bridge using the World-Phoenix’s relic, but the bridge was something like a tree. I planted a seed and would have to wait for it to grow. Once it had, I would need to complete the construction on both ends. But things didn’t go to plan.

“I created the anchor on Earth, then went to Pallimustus and did the same. Then there was an incident. I overtaxed my power and almost died again, and in the process broke both relics. I also absorbed their cosmic power, the next step on the path to becoming what I am now. I ended up returning most of that power to the Builder and the World-Phoenix, in return for the Builder ending his invasion of Pallimustus.

“It left me with a problem, however. I no longer had the tools to complete the bridge. In the end, I ended up obtaining the required knowledge over a number of years, mostly taken from the messengers during their invasion. I don’t know how much influence the goddess had on things falling into place the way they did, but I have to imagine that her hand was on the tiller.

“Finally, I had what I needed. Clive Standish and I designed and created a bridge between worlds. We planted the seed and it began to grow. At that time, I returned to Earth and you know what happened from there. Now the time has come to complete the bridge, at both ends. If we don’t, that growing bridge will become overgrown and start causing damage. Pallimustus will likely face some manner of cataclysm, while the Earth will be destroyed.

“There’s a fairly broad window of time in which I can complete the bridge, and we’re well inside that window now. But if that opportunity passes, the whole thing comes apart. Right now, the bridge between worlds is in a state where it’s ready for final stabilisation. Which is something the Earth needs, by the way. The most dangerous damage of the last few centuries has been repaired, but injuries to the foundations remain. The bridge will quietly keep working to fix that, but if it’s left incomplete, it will go from stabilising to destabilising. You’ll be lucky to get more than a few decades, the latter of which will be quite rough. On the bright side, the astral storms that appear as the dimensional membrane breaks down will wipe the earth clean of life long before the planet is utterly annihilated. To summarise, not fixing the bridge is bad. Instead of getting invaded, Earth gets wiped out of reality.”

“How long is your window of time to fix this?” Michael asked.

“There are still a few months before I absolutely need to leave for Pallimustus. I’ll give you all the time I can without risking the safety of the planet.”

“We’d like something a little more firm in terms of dates.”

“I understand that. I’ve been going by feel, since I can sense the general state of the link. Clive Standish has some tests running that will give us hard numbers, and you’ll get those as soon as we’ve got them.”

“If you can sense the state of the link, why didn’t you notice Simon McKean using it?” one of the other attendees asked, earning him a hard look from Michael.

“Minster, we agreed to—”

“It’s fine,” Jason said. “Minister, it’s a problem of scale. McKean only took enough energy to fuel his blood vine and resurrect some vampires. A river doesn’t notice if you take out a cup of water.”

“Are you saying that all that power McKean was wielding, enough to create an immortal army of vampiric abominations, was so insignificant that you didn’t even notice?”

“That’s exactly what I am saying, Minister. I’ve always been very clear that it was vast cosmic power. I even have a t-shirt.”

“Alright,” Michael said. “Let’s move on.”

He frowned at the notes in front of him for a long time, as Jason saw his unease reflected on the faces around the table.

“Something a little contentious, General?”

“Very,” Michael said, looking up at Jason and nodding. “This is where things start getting religious.”

“I’ll do my best to be respectful.”

“We all appreciate that. You said that this world didn’t have the magic to sustain a god, but now it does.”

“That’s right. Between the Builder’s original design and the World Phoenix’s intervention, Earth’s magic level was fixed at a low level. We did have some stuff running around, but it was always hidden. Not well, with some of the vampire lords, but hidden. Those magical elements ultimately formed the Cabal to keep their secrets.

“Knowledge’s plan disrupted all of that. She wanted a world with the power to sustain a god. Preferably just one god, and that’s where we are now. The main function of the bridge between worlds isn’t to permit travel but to regulate the magic. Now that it’s basically stable, Earth’s magic will slowly continue to rise until it’s quite similar to that of Pallimustus.”

“Why didn’t you stop it from rising at all anymore?” Danielle asked.

“It might have been possible, if things had been different during my last trip to Earth,” Jason said. “I advised magical factions and the world that snatching up reality cores exposed by transformation zones would do long-term damage. Well, it did. The dimensional membrane in the area around Earth is too thin, too damaged. There’s no going back anymore.”

“Mr Asano,” said one of the people sitting around the table. This was the US Secretary of Supernatural Affairs. “Are you saying that if we’d listened to you back then, there wouldn’t be enough magic for this goddess to invade?”

“I originally thought so, Mr Secretary. But Knowledge has been preparing for this too long, and too thoroughly. I’m now certain that it was always going to play out this way. I don’t think your nations and organisations were influenced against listening to me, but I think you would have been if necessary. Knowledge has too many contingencies, too many ways to adapt. She outplayed me hundreds of years before I was even born. This situation was always going to come to pass, one way or another.”

“Now that it has,” Michael said, “you’re asserting that there is currently enough magic to sustain the gods that could not have appeared before.”

“Yes, but only enough for one god, at least for now. I believe she intends to become a monotheistic deity, and then absorb more power as the magic rises, preventing other gods from appearing.”

“Which they would, if nothing stepped in for long enough?”

“That’s my understanding, yes. What kind of god it would be, I have no idea, and it would likely take one or more centuries to manifest.”

Michael took a deep breath and let it out harshly.

“That brings us to the most controversial topic for today, Mr Asano. One question that was debated quite fiercely before being included.”

“And what is that?” Jason asked lightly.

“I have another question first,” Michael said. “I have all of these questions on my notes, here. I haven’t shown them to you, but this, quite famously, is your domain. Can you read the notes in a folder I’ve had in my briefcase all day?”

“General, I can read the pages in a closed book in a basement on the other side of the city. Yes, I can read your notes.”

“Then this meeting is just going through the motions for you.”

“Not at all. For one thing, I believe that the process matters. How we get to our destination is often as important as the destination itself. On top of that, this meeting isn’t for me; it’s for all of you. This isn’t a waste of my time or some farce for my own amusement. I believe that what we’re doing here is entirely worthwhile, which is why I haven’t even mentioned that terrible vehicle Voltron reboot. With all the power in this room, you’d think we could—”

“Jason,” Danielle cut him off in her best stern mother voice.

“Right, sorry. Going back to my point, knowing the questions beforehand simply allows me to be better prepared to answer them, without getting distracted by side matters. For example, with pilots for all of those vehicles, that’s much too large an ensemble, and the vehicles themselves are all boxy and terrible. There were only five lions, and that’s a much better—”

“Jason,” Danielle said, escalating her tone to ‘we’re going to talk about this when we get home, Humphrey.’

“Sorry. Do go ahead, General.”

Michael stared at Jason, narrowing his eyes in suspicion.

“Mr Asano, did you, knowing what I’m about to ask, put on such a ridiculous display so that, within that context, what I’m going to ask comes off as equally absurd?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about, general. But do go on.”

“Very well,” Michael said, and took a steeling breath. “What I’ve been instructed to ask, Mr Asano, is that if there is an open slot for a god here on Earth, have you considered taking it for yourself? Is that even a possibility?”

Anna and Yumi, hadn’t known the question was coming, leading both them and their eyebrows to sit up straight. Only Danielle remained stoic, despite being just as surprised. As for Jason, a slight smile teased the corners of his mouth as he leaned back in his chair.

“Considered actually doing it?” he said. “No. I have considered whether it would be possible, but never contemplated following through.”

“Then it could be done?”

“Quite probably, yes. I’m not a god as such, but I have enough god in me that I could probably swing it. But I never would, not ever.”

“Why not?” Michael asked.

“Because gods are too limited. I have no interest in making myself that small.”

It was Michael’s turn to raise his eyebrows.

“Small?”

“Relatively speaking. Of the big three cosmic entity types, gods get the worst of it. I can go into the specifics later, if you like, but their main issue is that gods are bound to their worlds. They don’t even have true immortality, as they only last as long as the planet they’re attached to.”

“Then how is Knowledge coming here?” Danielle asked. “Shouldn’t she be trapped on my world?”

“Normally, yes. What is happening requires very specific circumstances, going all the way back to when the original Builder created our two universes. This is the very reason the original Builder was sanctioned. It would never have happened while the Cosmic Throne was intact.”

“Can you go into the details of these circumstances?” the US Secretary asked.

“It’s hard without years of studying astral magic theory, but I’ll try and cover the basics. Because of the way the Builder created our two universes, Earth and Pallimustus are, in certain metaphysical regards, the same planet. That’s how Knowledge is managing to get away with it. Even then, it’s taken centuries of meticulous planning and execution to create the exact conditions required. She needs to take everything she is, every iota of her essence, and pass it across the bridge to do this. The bridge had to meet very specific requirements to make that possible. She manipulated me and who knows how many others to get it put in place, exactly as she needed it. Thousands, maybe millions of little nudges, across two worlds and hundreds of years. It would be impressive if it wasn’t the dastardly master plan of an evil warmongering super-librarian.”

“But you’re saying,” the Secretary chimed in again, “that you could take the god position yourself. If you wanted.”

“I’m not so sure that the people of Earth would want me as their god. I know I don’t.”

“But you could do it.”

“I’m not a hundred percent sure, but probably.”

“Would that stop this foreign goddess?”

“I don’t know. She’d might come over here are start a holy war against me anyway, planning to sanction me and steal all the power when she won.”

“She could do that?”

“I don’t know. We are way past the part of the map with the sea monster on it, Mr Secretary. Here be dragons. I will tell you that gods can affect each other in ways they can’t impact mortals, or vice versa. It is the responsibility of gods to manage their own. She could bend those rules to start a fight over who governs the Earth as its one true god.”

“If gods manage their own,” Michael said, “then why aren’t the gods of the other world intervening?”

The whole room flinched as Jason’s face twisted into a snarl.

“Something I intend to ask them,” he growled, before schooling his expression and taking a cleansing breath.

“I’d just like to say,” he continued in a normal voice, “that I’m glad you asked if I would be willing to become God. I know there’s a lot of contention being stirred up around me and what I’ve been telling everyone about the world and how gods work. That you would even ask that means that you understand the magnitude of what we’re up against.”

“I’d like to continue exploring the idea of you becoming the god of this world,” the Secretary said. “If that would help us—”

“It might,” Jason said. “Maybe. A little. But it wouldn’t stop her armies coming. And I would never do that. It’s suicide.”

“Suicide? You think she’d kill you?”

“She wouldn’t be able to kill me, but if I went full god, she could mess me up, assuming she wins. I could be left powerless and broken, like a long-running TV show that keeps going after the lead actor quits. But even if I won, I would then be bound to this planet which, a few billion years from now, will be a burned out, lifeless rock. That’s assuming the expanding sun hasn’t swallowed it entirely. As it stands, I’m going to live well beyond the life span of this planet, while any gods attached to it will not. Killing their planet is the one way I know to kill a god, but I think we can all agree that destroying the Earth to stop her is not worth it.”

The room fell silent, everyone staring at Jason. It went on for a long time until he flashed them all a smile.

“General, should we move on to the more detailed questions?”

Holy bleep I'm early! Tyftc 🤙

mhaj58

Why is it always Vehicle Voltron Shirty? I love your work brother, but please get some help. You don’t have to carry this burden anymore. I wish sarcasm could get across as well in text as it does vocally.

Agent P.

That right there is a perfect example of the one you know rather than the one you dont

Kallisti _

I wish we knew how close to diamond rank Jason et al have come. Because once he hits it, Gordon can take care of that snake. “When worlds end, you are the arbiter. When gods fall, you are the instrument. Herald of annihilation, come forth and be my harbinger. I have doom to bring.”

John goode

Am I the only one that thinks knowledge might be the old builder ? It’s been said that he was sanctioned, but being sanctioned just changes what the power is what if they stripped him of that power and put his mind into the god of knowledge on Pali and then left that leftover power for the new Builder to inherit

David Harshman

Gordon could take care of it...by Dooming Earth...

Kallisti _

If it came to that, I'm sure he would let Colin have his fun first. : D

Andrew Woodard

I love how with that last sentence, he cuts off all thoughts of, "Maybe we destroy Palli instead."

Parker Bond

In theory couldn't they migrate everyone from earth to his spirit world and then destroy the earth in a way that leaves Pallimustus unharmed?

Fervent Fiend

I guess Gordon is going to become Jason’s planet destroying super laser for his inevitable god slaying shenanigans.

Unwillingmainer

I imagine Dominion has some thoughts on Knowledge becoming the sole god of a world. After all, if anyone should rule Earth, it should be him.

David Harshman

They indicated the Sanctioning of The Builder was performed by attaching the power of The Builder to the Messenger that became The New Builder. The Old Builder is still there...just worn by The New Builder like a costume.

Andrew

Damn, putting that thought in their head is such an asshole move. "Just kill the planet to defeat her?" Yeah, that's going to give them nightmares.

Kallisti _

Team Colin is *best* boy.

The Random NPC

She’d might come over here are start a holy war against me anyway, planning to sanction me and steal all the power when she won. -> come over here and

David Harshman

I dunno...Dominion doesn't seem like He is a ruler. He is the God of rulers. There is a difference. He might approve of a tyrannical conquest, regardless of who does it.

Dalth

Bet all the Palli gods are just like, “we just want her gone. She keeps interrupting everyone’s plans…”

Gingix

Sometimes foreshadowing is relatively obvious.

David Harshman

Does that really feel like a viable solution? 😮

luke milford

Honestly after this chapter I feel as though I can see a few different ways to stop Knowledge without time magic nonsense as we have been previously warned of. Really looking forward to seeing what creative choices Shirt chooses. Absolutely love this entire series ! Tyftc

Corvid

Surprised they didn't ask if Jason could just recreate the earth in his astral kingdom entirely and leave knowledge to be the goddess of that one rock people used to be on.

Corvid

"Look Jason, we really like you. We even gave you the junior membership card and decoder ring all those years ago, right? But she's a total wet blanket. The absolute worst."

Stephanie Washburn

Wait so..... Knowledge will leave Palimistus entirely?

joshua cross

So good I want at least 3 more book after this one plz or maybe another 13 would be nice

Marter

There’s something I’m curious about Jason has his system that is connected to literally every magical being everywhere. I’m surprised he doesn’t use the hey I’m gonna send out your coordinates to everyone with a promise of a wish if they come and kill you card. Even if the wishes a lie, you’d still get a bunch of made diamond rankers I wouldn’t know any better. And you wouldn’t even have to send to earth where they couldn’t go. You can just go to the knowledge as home world where they can be more than viable.

Catrina

In the making of the bridge can't jason have set up a trap where there is a way to close ( raise) both ends like the London Bridge or a medieval draw bridge or even just a trap door in the middle he could pull to briefly allow cosmic forces in to kill knowledge and then repair it. Isn't that why dawn wanted jason to become an integral part of the design, to have some control for when this battle did come?

DaWykitat

I want a chappy in the other universe showing Jason's avatar meeting with the palli gods

Allformsoflight

I suspect that this conflict with Knowledge will help Jason begin to identify and accept his responsibilities as the GAB of the system. I wonder if part of his oversight may be related to protecting those on the mortal path like essence users from cosmic BS raining from on high. Like greedy gods, rogue GABs, cults, wannabe originals and the like.

Cordell Patrick

Not everyone only essence users are currently naturally apart of the system he'll probably be able to change that in the future but as it stands its only essence users

Captain the Red Beard

I think that might be one of the back options. Like plan H or something lol

Soulessone

I feel like they are actually asking real questions here

Minotaur Fanboy

So is this the final chapter before the Big Break? I know Shirtaloon said he was taking the month off, but also that he was finishing the book before the Big Break. I thought he meant he was talking all of April off, making this the last chapter before the Big Break. But I can't tell if I was I right or wrong. This could be the cliffhanger book ending that surpasses "Welcome to the System," Lol. If anyone made it this far through my ramblings, I am just as interested as Jason in why the other gods of the Pallimustus Pantheon aren't dropping the hammer on Knowledge for this. I know a god has to embody every part of their domain, but this feels like taking "Knowledge is Power" too far. I know everything nice about Knowledge was an act, but Death, Hero, and Healer don't have any reason (that we know of) to put on a front. Death even said part of the reason she gave Jason the miracle to defeat Undeath was to to give him a more positive view of divine benevolence. And I refuse to believe she did so in the hopes he would let them letting Knowledge run wild slide, because that is not at *all* an equal exchange, and doesn't feel like something Death would do anyway. But this didn't seem like something Knowledge would do, so what do I know? I'm turning the tap off on thsi word-hydrant, now. Lol.

RonGAR

The real question is... would having Knowledge being the sole god/goddess on earth be so bad???

Mitha

I wonder if Jason as the "ruler" of the cosmic throne could have the power to slap knowledge on the wrist for her tinkering with the rules. For that he would have to fully accept that role, as you said.

Kaelan Spears

Dominion and Liberty have been helping him in subtle ways, and i think hero sanctioned himself in preparation for fighting knowledge. It's not that they don't suspect knowledge of pulling some shit, it's that she's toeing the line just enough to not warrant getting sanctioned. After all, she's the goddess of knowledge. She knows exactly where that line is

Mitha

When these expansion chapters are done I'll have to read the whole series again. To get all the details shirt has hidden.

NicN

Tftc

Aaron S

The one thing I keep coming back to is why she would want to do this and what she gains from it. Gods aren’t ambitious in the way that mortals are. They can’t improve themselves the way mortals can. if becoming a monotheistic deity reforged is her into something other than knowledge, then that is literally a form of suicide. And if it doesn’t, then she just be the god of knowledge here the same way she was on pali, and I have no idea why that would be desirable to her. Nothing would change except geography. Also, and this is a new question, if she really needs to transfer every single drop of her authority across the bridge, the that means she will entirely vanished from Pali. Even if she tells all her priests, what’s going on before she leaves, how many of them are going to accept it? How are the uneducated masses going to react when, to their limited understanding of the situation, one of the gods dies. It’s going to be a cluster fuck.

Scott Faulkner

this is a wizard of oz question. Is the Wizard a good person? Even in the original book he's a lying carpet bagger that sent a girl and her friends to be killed by an evil witch. That's the best he's looked from all the other books about oz.

Tim

"Argh, laddie, hyar be dragins!"

Thomas Bell

My speculation is that she wants to conquer earth and use the astral spaces on an attempt to usurp the cosmic throne from under Jason's butt. She doesn't want to be god, she wants to be a GAB

Feu et Glace

I had a dream last night that something terrible happened to his niece or Earth and that Clive and Jason went back in time. Clive became the Magister in ancient history and created the tools that he would one day use. Dawn tried to stop him with Farra but in the end even with all that he somehow killed the Network Founder preventing all the damage. So now Earth was never in danger from the damage of from the Builder and Knowledge. In the newly fractured timeline he woke up for work the next day to head back to the Office Supplies store thinking it was all a dream. (This is a complete fiction generated in my sleep and I have no facts to support)

Josh Witherspoon

You know, if they're willing to consider taking Jason as their God, why wouldn't they just consider moving into his universe? That way they don't have to deal with that at all. Or couldn't he even pull the Earth into his private universe? The other messengers did something similar.

Ian Burkhill

This is why This arc seems so weak this chapter alone explains why the Great Astral Beings can't interfere Jason is now magnitudes higher than they are and he's cracking about voltron why should we take it seriously if he can't? You yourself provided a simple solution. Another is she's just one palli god she needs faith to have authority Gabrielle is cut off from her all earth has to do is reject her it's not like the Earth hasn't got a history of religious crusades

Feu et Glace

I originally bought all the books and now I just bought all the audio books. I'm listening to the audio books and I'm on like book 3 when Jason is joking with Clive about being a secret GAB. I had to drive 12 hours yesterday and listened to the audiobook the whole way and I was exhausted when I went to sleep and it led to an interesting dream. See my comment above.

Feu et Glace

That's not a bad idea but imagine the logistics nightmare

Ira White

it would have been hilarious if Wednesday would have been the chapter that everyone went back to Pali only for Jason to step threw the portal and knowledge and Dawn were to show up with party poppers and world Phoenix font magic scrip signs saying Apirl fools.

Shazbaz

That's what I keep wondering. She's always seemed an okay bloke, let her have it. She can't be worse than the humans.

RonGAR

@JC Well, she was the cause of every bad thing that happened over the last 500 yrs or so... Goddess of purity and diguse situation and all the crap the lead to. Builder and Messenger invasion was on her as well...Everything! It was all Knowledge. Sooo yeah, she is pretty bad. The reason why I asked my question is... since she did all of that to GET EARTH for herself... How bad will she be for Earth, now that she has what she wanted all along? IF Jason had never found out how evil she actually was, and she just rocked up and laid claim to it all, nobody would've cared. No one on earth would've given two craps about it.

Sena

I wouldn't want my neighbor to be Gabrielle thats for sure. She'd be an HOA president for sure.

RonGAR

@Sena LLOLOLOLOLOL Good one!

David Harshman

And thus, he created a situation where he wasn't there to do all those things...so they didn't get done...so he did in fact get thrown into thise situations where he started the time loop and etc etc...

David Harshman

If you think she stops having goals and being evil just because she achieved a goal, then I think you're being a bit naive.

David Harshman

That was always the plan, as I understand it. She isn't straddling both worlds. She is all in on Earth.

Joanna

I love that idea

Ian Burkhill

I could take this in earlier books as a coping method but here where he's power scaled so far beyond 1 palli god its grating actually when other people are coming with better ways to solve the problem like recreate earth in his soul and move everybody shirtaloon can't have Jason take this threat seriously why should we?

Kakaochen

She clearly knows something we don't, being who she is. She knows all about the Purity relic, and everything that had the Palli diamond rankers in a tizzy. And as pointed out in this chapter, none of the Gods have let Jason know why they haven't intervened. Despite many of them having temples in and around his domain. It stands to reason any of the Gods could have sent some clergy outside for a chat. But they haven't. Jason keeps pointing out that Gods only live as long as their planets, and Knowledge wants off Palli. Id be side eyeing what she predicts for that planets future, because like you said, she isn't driven by ambition.

Dax

Finally!

RonGAR

@Thomas Well Duh... OF COURSE she does. IF anyone hasn't figured that out then they don't have any critical thinking skills at all. You really think she likes seeing someone as stupid as Jason get elevated to the pinnacle of cosmic power and rule over her? HELL NAW! LOL She is going to use his ass as a crowbar and put herself at the top. All she has to do is what he did to trigger one power growth after another (In a smarter more controlled manner of course) and Wham, She is a God/ Astral Being as well, and well on her way to knife the fool who is sitting on the throne now. Look... its going to be a sanctioning on Jason. IT was mentioned TOO MANY TIMES for it not to be used on him. Look... she is going to do something that finally gets Jason to do something ridiculous and enact his NEED to 'save the day'. He is going to go over the top and is going to get himself sanctioned. Whether he wants to or not, whether he knows it or not. THEN she is going to mask herself in his power as she learned from the god 'disguse' and use the throne in his place.

Bryan

Well considering the act of preventing any other gods from forming will probably necessitate her purging earth of anyone who venerates any god other than her, yeah, she'd still really suck for Earth even if Jason hadn't revealed her evil history. She would be coming to Earth to conduct the ultimate Crusades.

Stephanie Washburn

People are notoriously disinterested in leaving their homes. Unless they're the rare type of person who wants to leave already. Even when folks are forced to leave you always get one or two who stay despite the danger

Stephanie Washburn

I always understood the plan to be "I get both so I'm the coolest". If there's a plan at all. I'm still deeply unhappy with how pointless this scenario is

Donald Spencer

At Silver, Gordon killed undeaths avatar. Jason is close to diamond.... his whole team is...

Isaac Scharff

I totally thought the ridiculous question was going to be about the christian god.

Aaron S

I don’t think Jason is enough of an astral being that sanctioning would work on him. He is composed of things other than authority. And plus I think someone would’ve mentioned if you could sanction astral Kings, which is basically what he is for the purposes of this discussion. Also, Jason isn’t the cosmic throne. I do not think that there is any way that she can gain access to the throne through him. If that were possible, I think being a lot more powerful than her would be trying. Not to mention there is absolutely no way for her to have known in advance that the pond that she set up to do the Earth takeover plan would be leveraged by everyone else into fixing the throne. That was outside the scope of her plans. She knew that her pawn would have extensive dealings with the world Phoenix that’s about it. Also, as I said before, God’s don’t have an ego in the same way mortals do. I’m pretty sure she’s incapable of jealousy.

blucube 14

Thanks for the chapter!

ThoMiCroN

I guess Jason will have a big conversation with Dominion, who will be fanboying over the acumen of Knowledge.

Kevari

Reject that nosy-ass magic construct on principle. If she was the God of conquest or invasions or generally villainous behavior, I’d say she’s fulfilling her purpose. The reason why she shouldn’t be earth’s sole god (nixed from the pantheon of either world tbh) is that she isn’t using her domain for the sake of her faithful and not even for her own satisfaction. She’s just being a warmongering, power grubbing piece of astral waste whose plans definitely won’t stop at being the sole goddess of one planet. A god’s domain influences their personality and the actions they take. If they deviate too much, they literally change at their core. What tenet of knowledge demands the repeated betraying of your own world in order to eventually rule another world you repeatedly and intentionally put in existential danger? What’s stopping her from using the earth in more of her self-serving plans to “ascend” beyond her natural limitations and who says those plans end with the earth or its people still existing or even just having their freedom? If she doesn’t want other gods popping up, she’s eventually going to have to nip that in the bud—meaning the people who want to worship other gods than her since that likely plays a role. Not having a choice makes her a tyrant and a dictator at best, not worth worshipping.

Kevari

Yea that dude was always the villain, hands down. The Witch was too powerful for them not to be afraid of her, and worse, she’s a woman. Can’t have that 🙄

Jesse

So couldn't Jason just make a planet in his universe earth and let everyone who wants him to be god move in?

2026-09-06 06:00 Im guessing he’ll eventually start using whatever power it is he gets from prayer energy. People tend to pray a lot more during war. Speaking from experience. But wouldn’t the simplest solution be to take everyone into his own universe and put them on a planet(s) there? With the kind of power he will have, he’d be able to create a new planet or find one for everyone. Let the gods die. Shirt probably has reasons why this is isn’t possible, and I’m very interested to see how he resolves it. All powerful characters are easily written into plot holes. Hmm I just don’t see a reason to fight. If people want to stay there let them, take those who want to leave. From both worlds.

I mostly agree except for the ‘incapable of jealousy’ part. If being jealous is a part of a god’s whole thing then they definitely would be and knowing everything there is to know on one world or even two probably just highlights to her how much she doesn’t know or have control over. Also I don’t think Palli being in danger was the cause for all that, if that was the case then couldn’t she have put all that time and effort and planning and resources and scheming into saving her planet instead of leaving it? If Jason could save his (twice and mostly by accident) there’s no way she couldn’t save hers

Logrus

Maybe don't tell the people with nukes that destroying the planet will kill the God invading them? O_o

Corvid

An emperor doesn't personally arrest a peasant for stealing grain, he has someone in a lower tax bracket handle it. That's how I see the interaction between gabs and local gods at least

Catfan

Typos: "Miachel" should be "Michael" "She'd might come over here are start a holy war against me anyway" shouldn't have the "'d" on "she'd", and "are" should be "and" instead, or the sentence should otherwise be phrased differently.

Ligeia

@Aaron S, I think the reference to the throne was to Jason's astral king throne, not the cosmic throne.

Ligeia

The System-wide messages go to not just current essence users but everyone with the capacity to use essences, i.e. every being over about the age of 15. That's a LOT of beings!

Ligeia

Care to drop some hints? Other than destroying the planet, of course.

StrudelHalfBaked

As Jason has said before, simple doesn't mean easy. Also, it's an invasion. She already has an army of faithful coming from Pallimustus. No doubt she plans killing or coercing anyone who opposes her.

Esther Prenosil

Jason said that becoming the god of earth would be "suicidal" but what if he can expand/merge it with his astral kingdom? Would that make him what the current builder wants to be?

Jyan91

Just pop earth in his inner dimension lol

Philipp Battenberg

Theoretically, it's possible to relocate a planet, as was seen in the scene with the Builder('s Primary Vessel) and the Astral Kings. So, adding a planet to Jason's universe could be done. However, with the connection between Pallimustus and Earth, it could get weird. Jason might need to remain near Palli in the Astral, forcefully tethered, and armies could invade his soul. It could be necessary to add both worlds, or that the world not added (or both) get torn apart. And Jason could evacuate Earth, but many would choose to remain and fight. Additionally, Jason is a bit spiteful and doesn't want Knowledge to win. As for Palli's other gods? I think the problem is that Knowledge played them in part, colluding with Dark gods, like Undeath, to make the other gods spend Authority, while hording hers. During the Builder Invasion, where she had used and improved her prepared armies, which also might have gained her additional Authority from prayer. While other gods needed to work miracles, spending Authority. Edit: And some gods gave Jason the Divine orbs, which might be part of their plan against Knowledge, which they couldn't discuss with him until Dawn showed him how to keep knowledge (lower case) from his Avatars and therefore from Knowledge. So, it could be that he is invited into a temple's sanctum to discuss it, or ask to enter his Domain.

nameless1

Not really, since that's still not a whole universe sized astral kingdom

nameless1

He will show up and save them all

Reaperess

Everyone from Earth enters Jason's Astral Kingdom. He goes to Pali. Knowledge comes to Earth. Seal the bridge between worlds. Knowledge can be the Goddess of Earth if she wants, but with a hollow victory.

Kristy Riedel

Yeah, why can't God just be God. Nevermind Allah, or Buddha, or Shiva etc

Kristy Riedel

Gordon helped sanction the half complete avatar of undeath after the battles and Gary had made it expend most of its power, and it still almost beat Jason.

Kristy Riedel

Along with the anchor of the bridge that would allow knowledge to enter? No thanks.

Kristy Riedel

I sleep every night with these books playing. Heath's voice is so nice and when I wake up I can get right back to sleep listening to it.

Crystal Donak

"Now the time has come to complete the bridge, at both ends. If we don’t, that growing bridge will become overgrown and start causing damage. Pallimustus" this was be never men tinned when they were on Palli. I have to go back and check but I have listened to these books so many times it must be a retcon. (I could be wrong but this is a HUGE detail to miss) but its driving me nuts and im quite annoyed. (Oh I have to go back the bridge again" I love the idea of Knowledge as a baddie. But it feels forced. Sorry _ don't tear me apart. I love the story. Something is just off.

Frog

So… if destroying the planet a god is “on” kills them, and to get at Earth “every iota of” what she is must be passed over the bridge… in theory Jason could destroy the bridge while she’s crossing, or maybe even just flood it with his power. Permanently destroying the bridge would be VERY bad for Earth but would avoid the “destroy a world outright” contingency. If the bridge could be just temporarily shut down, or sufficiently altered, then Earth would be damaged but fixable, and knowledge would be stopped.

Frog

Jason has demonstrated the ability to invite and talk to gods via non-prime avatars in his Palli domain. Why hasn’t he already asked them about their leaving knowledge to act up?

Joshua Little

Not really a hollow victory if she gets everything she wants. She would still have her followers on Earth and it would just take time to repopulate.

Reaperess

Maybe? But she's not really getting anything she doesn't already have, besides a rock floating through space. No new people. No new followers. Sure, her army could repopulate eventually. But so what? Thats SO much more limited than what she probably actually wants. I can't help but feel like we are missing a crucial piece of the puzzle. The why. Why does she want this? What is it she's after? There's got to be something else.

Eleeyah

I personally figured it was to let the bits where Earth and Pallimustus AREN'T metaphysically the same transcend her past the limits of godhood. She'd become a great astral being of knowledge.

Reaperess

Now THAT is interesting. I feel like she'd have to make a more dramatic shift to become a GAB. But I could totally see that.

Eleeyah

Oh yeah, to be precise, I'd imagine being on both Earth and Pallimustus simultaneously is only the first proper step in a long process of transformation.

Reaperess

Oh... oh wait wait wait. Knowledge convinced purity to sanction themselves to create an artifact. How much do you want to bet that the purity artifact is on earth or that knowledge already has access to it. That knowledge will use the purity artifact to transcend from godhood to something more. Maybe a GAB maybe something else?

Eleeyah

Unfortunately, I can't remember what happened with the artifact. Been too long. XD Didn't Jason and Co. do something with it? Did it have something to do with Melody?

Eleeyah

It *could* be a way to trap Knowledge there, though. Not sure how that would look or work.

Reaperess

I was thinking that it had something to do with Melody. It was hinted at at least. But I dont remember that thread being wrapped up.

David Harshman

Probably because the Gods wanted something, then. He can't exactly summon them to his Domains for a scolding.

David Harshman

Hard to call it forced when people have been predicting it since about Book 4...

David Harshman

There aren't enough nukes on Earth to destroy the planet. Not even close. I doubt magically enhancing the nukes is enough to change that fact.

David Harshman

We can't get people to completely evacuate cities during natural disasters, even when that city is functionally nonexistent anymore, because they refuse to leave their homes. Do you really think they can convince the entire population of Earth to abandon the planet? And, that even assumes it was logistically practical, which seems improbable.

Crystal Donak

Maybe..rushed or something. I dont know. But no they haven't not that she wanted to invade Earth.

Kyle Hunter

“Mr Asano, did you, knowing what I’m about to ask, put on such a ridiculous display so that, within that context, what I’m going to ask comes off as equally absurd?” might be the best line of the book so far.

Christian Sullivan

Why can't Jason let everybody into his astral realm and then give up an empty planet to knowledge? Like, I'm pretty sure he could create a second planet similar to earth in his own universe.

Jesse

That's why I said a planet for people who WANT him as a god. The rest can stay on earth not believe him and get a new God/Goddess anyway. It's a simple and very Jason solution help the people who want help first.

Josh

I have a feeling that Jason is playing a very specific misinformation game against knowledge.

Vjax

Knowledge believes that palli is doomed. I’m thinking messengers and the purity relic, the head messenger wants to be an original and will do anything to attain that including destroying palli to do it. Knowledge figured that out centuries ago and started making moves to relocate and buy herself 4 billion extra years without the games gods have to play with each others authority. Dawns always said that Jason is needed for what comes after knowledges invasion It’s more important that Jason be there to stop the destruction of palli than the invasion of earth.

ItsFin

Its wouldnt even be a waste of whats happened, if a vampire war is what bings them together enough to agree to just evac the planet. He could literally just make a second earth. Defending this rock is not worth the fight when you can actually get every person off the planet.

Gingix

It was a joke about Jason having to destroy a planet (Earth or Pali) to defeat Knowledge. Foreshadowing how the story arc would end. I don't actually think that he will be destroying a planet to win, not really his style but it was a funny thought in my head while I was reading.

Jules Deathwish

He has an internal universe with multiple planets already, no? Can he just absorb the Earth, or Pali, or Both and fuck off to some other plane of existence?

Micah

Do both Earth and Pallimustus have their own universes? Are the two only connected at Earth/Palli? Do other planets/stars/galaxies in a Palli universe also have high magic, or is the imbalance just at the two planets?

Ian Burkhill

How would that work? Religion in this series has been established as true belief to work book 1 Jason doesn't kneel to Hero in the worship square it makes little sense to bring an army who already believes and you can't force people to believe in fact they would reject. Jason himself denied knowledge manipulation early in book 2 just after breaking up with cassandra and rufus slapped her priest I could buy this if it was all the gods but no not now Jason is now a gary stu living universe god/gab/Astral King powered by the Cosmic Throne which is part of him. I go on about voltron but he has had years of training from both Anna and Danielle now this is supposed to be the big threat yet he's written not to take it seriously why should I care? People are coming up with better solutions than shirtaloon now

Vincent Ciavone

Thats what im wondering, I could see this mature Jason making concessions and keeping an eye on knowledge to ensure they keep their word cause she probably only wants power and to teach and thats not really evil, gods will appear eventually, whats the problem with her being first

Vincent Ciavone

God i would love so many more chapters of jason just answering questions. I mean I dont wanna wait for them, but theyd be cool additions

Ian Burkhill

Makes little sense doesn't it? I'm disabled I tell you this as my big escape is a love and passion for Comics. That may sound sad but it is a release for me. Tell you this as I'm on the verge of dropping this patreon.I know that sounds melodramaticas I enjoyed the series first time but since shirtaloon's illness I've started the series over and this as the beginning of the end is unstastisfying At iron rank Jason defied Knowledge. whenever she encounters outworlders she learns what they know Gabrielle married Travis Earth's Clive why does she need to come here? At first i saw the constant pop references as a coping device stuck on a different planet. A couple of chapters ago he cooked Mckean alive while Nik made the world watch, now, he'scracking Voltron monologues while the supposed big bad is on verge of Attack that many people have already given simple answers too he's a toddler. Reading the later books both frame and recontext his casual cruelity 1 minute Jason's worried about child soldiers then he sadicistally butchered Rick Gellar's team in the holo chamber no death but the chamber doesn't mitigate pain or fear. He tells Arabelle Remore "people are tools to be used" Sop[hie a person we originally think he has high regard for and saves from a fate worse than death. Her mum is brainwashed and slowly has her Pysche ripped apart. The only way to stall it it have her walk through the soul portal. now anyone with that amount of power and empathy for a friend would turn it off a make sure Melody feels safe straight away but he drops her into a heavy metal Hellscape until Sophie arrives and threatens him. finally the chpter defier he wants Farrah as a voice and fights with himself to make her the defier. Jason should be the big bad himself

J

Yes this might be too simple but move everyone into a copy of earth in his own universe and then wait for knowledge to invade earth and destroy it. It would set a precedent not only on pali but the greater cosmos

Tim

At this point SHE IS THE REASON for all of everything you stated. Pallimustis would have none of that stuff happening if it werent for her. She convinced Purity to not just Sanction himself, but to do it in such a way as to cause mayhem. Then she let that information out. The only thing NOT her fault, so far, is the original Builder screwing with the two worlds before their creation.

Tim

Well, why would you go poking about in an extremely dangerous environment when you can only bring part of your power to bear? Its much better to wait until your team is ready. Plus its been stated several times that gods cannot intrude upon each others sphere of influence so readily, so they would likely tell Jason little to nothing.

Tim

In all of the earlier books Jason was only told what he needed to know and WHEN. Plus there is like 10 or so years of time skip here. So he likely deepened his knowledge of the bridge then. Plus this could have been kept from him. Not to mention everything he was ever told was to ANCHOR the bridge. And thats what he did.

Tim

The Artifact is on Palli, all the gods there know where it is but cant say anything. Knowledge tricked Purity, so its likely she actually has it, or close proximity since it was the bait to lure the Messengers. And Melody was cured via Carlos' research on vampires and that lady who kept hitting herself with lightning. That allowed them to better understand the removal of...soul crud, for lack of a better term.

Tim

Doubtful, at least probably not until he's Diamond and fully transcended. He states himself that he only has a small universe. Plus, he's only PART god/astral being, so theres no way he could move a planet...not to mention the bridge would have to be destroyes which would tear the Earth and probably its universe to shreds. And even if you tried to evacuate everyone, how would that go exactly? Leave your homes for a magic spacebubble so we can destroy our world to keep an evil librarian from becoming the one, true god?

Jesse

He has like 6 habitable planets last I heard. Also I didn't mean move the planet I meant move all the people to a planet in his system.

Jesse

I'm not sure I agree with your math there. There are certainly enough nukes to sterilize the planet 20 times over. Probably not enough to crack it in half.

Stephanie Washburn

Jason does definitely have some problems related to doing inappropriate things because he thought they would be funny. And he's got the same energy as the worst proselytizer in his options about religion, at least in the early books. I do think that Jason has finally learned to run a meeting, instead of sitting there either smugly or angrily driving the thing off topic in order to toy with people's time and emotions. It might be worth staying just to see how it ends. But if you want to leave you certainly can.

Ian Burkhill

I'll probably stay to see how it goes I'm not a battle junkie but stuff like the yaresth factions took up half of book 10 and never got resolved or if revisited would likely matter now

Jacob Edwards

I’m also interested in the answer to this

John Durrett

Tyftc. Correction: She’d might come over here are start She’d might come over here and start

Tim

Insofar as we know, yes, Earth and Palli have their own universes. We know this from when Jason returns to Earth the first time and he is dealing with the transformation zones. He is told that at best only the Earth would be destroyed, but if things got really bad, the universe could have a hole blown through it. But Palli would have been fine. Shirt tends to interchange "universe" and "reality" so each pocket of physical existence is a "reality" that may or may not have a "universe." But we also know that Earth and Palli are mirrors and were created by the original Builder with, IIRC, "Universe Seeds" and Jason later laments only having a couple of planets "and its not a proper universe like the Builder makes" [paraphrased].

Other Tan

RE: "She needs to take everything she is, every iota of her essence, and pass it across the bridge to do this." Does that mean there will be an opening in Pali for a God/Goddess of Knowledge? Maybe the redeemed vampire Thadwick will become take over for Knowledge of Purity, as it seems Jason won't be taking the seat.

Elarris

I’m sure that would have very very bad consequences for Pali.

Elarris

These last couple chapters Jason has really impressed me with his ability to sit and rationally communicate with other people. Our little edgelord is all grown up

joker ledger

i think it because he can regulate his avatar emotions and memories now. He can tune down his antics and erratic behaviors which is actually quite sad if you think about it that he need to keep tuning his personality to have a decent talk

Blake Brower

If Earth is willing to appoint Jason as taking the God position, then what's the problem moving into his Astral Kingdom and sidelining the entire issue? He could completely clone Earth, they wouldn't even be able to tell the difference aside from his aura being ever-present. At that point, they can just tell Knowledge to kick rocks, we'd rather let the Earth explode. If Pallimustus doesn't want to suffer the cataclysm that comes with that, they can sanction Knowledge. The other Astral King dude also wants to be Jason's friend. Jason doesn't like the guy, but I refuse to believe that someone on his level couldn't come up with proper countermeasures...

JW Saxby

Amazing 😁 Tyftc 🍻

Kenny Turman

Hmmm... Until now the 'founder' has yet to be named, becoming a glaring hole in this tale. Do you think it's Jason himself? that he forgoes Raythes warning, manipulates time , and builds the network as part of his rummaging about?

StarkRG

I don't, no. I think the founder is exactly what we've been told, an Earth-native, Pallimustus outworlder that got a pet spider and joined the Church of Knowledge. While I do think that Jason is probably manipulating current events from the near future, I think the only one that's likely to actually go back in time beyond the current boundaries of the story is Clive, who I still think could be sent back to become the Magister. Imagine a Diamond-ranked Clive arriving on Pallimustus maybe fifteen hundred years ago, perhaps meeting a silver-ranked future Mirror King?

StarkRG

The universes should be pretty close to being clones of each other since we've only heard about Earth and Pali having different magical conditions imposed on them, and we've been told that by people who would have access to information about the wider universes and no apparent reason not to tell us.

StarkRG

Unless she *is* the original Builder. We've been told that they're still around, just sanctioned into something else. What if they were sanctioned to be the god of Knowledge on one of their plaything worlds?

StarkRG

It was definitely implied that the bridge was completed and just needed to settle in before opening up, so I'd say it's a little bit of a retcon. However, it could easily be explained that the anchors are what had been placed, and now he actually needs to construct it or whatever.

Alex Frain

I mean, why not evacuate the population to one of his planets then return to earth when they are all diamond and slaughter the knowledge priests...?
