You couldn’t really call it a barbecue anymore. Once enough people and enough food were gathered, it turned into a festival. Jason’s grandmother and sister had taken the whole event in hand, closing off entire sections of Saint-Étienne. Benches and tables filled the streets, while kiosks and cooking stations were set up all over. It had started out as an event for friends and family, to bid those leaving goodbye. Somehow, it had morphed into a massive celebration for the clan and its allies; a last, joyous event before the shadow of war passed over them all.

Jason wound his way through the crowd carrying a huge tray of meat, placing it down at the long picnic table holding his family, his team and their families. He slid onto the bench between Taika and Emi.

“Hold on,” Belinda said. “Zara, I thought the current Storm King was your brother, but now you’re saying he’s your cousin?”

Zara let out the unhappy groan of someone who had explained something enough times to know it never went well.

“Technically, he’s both,” she said.

“Oh,” Neil said, awkward understanding on his face. “I didn’t realise the Storm Kingdom had one of those royal families.”

“We don’t!”

“We understand,” Emi assured her. “You’ve got to keep those bloodlines pure.”

“I said we’re not like that.”

“Stella, you’re from the Storm Kingdom,” Sophie pointed out. “What do you think?”

“Oh, they’re definitely like that. It’s common knowledge.”

“It is not!”

“Are you going to be a sister-wife?” Taika asked. “I don’t think that’s okay, bro.”

“Did you just call me ‘bro?’”

“If you’re going to marry your brother,” Erika’s husband Ian said, “I think you have bigger things to worry about than pronouns.”

“Leave the poor woman alone,” Erika said, giving her husband a disapproving glare that was met with a cheeky grin.

“Yes, leave her alone,” Jason’s uncle Hiro said. “There have been many cultures where it’s acceptable to marry your brother, who are we to judge?”

“I’m not going to marry my brother! And he’s not even my brother like that, he’s adopted. He’s a cousin my father adopted as a baby to shield him from the political consequences when his parents turned out to be traitors.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Belinda said. “So, you’re going to marry your cousin?”

“I’m not going to marry anyone!”

Taika shook his head and placed a hand on Jason’s shoulder.

“Bro, if you liked it, you should have put a ring on it.”

“The political reality makes that a bad idea,” Zara said. “The Church of Knowledge may only have annexed one small island, but they still seized the Storm Kingdom’s sovereign territory. And this isn’t like France wanting Saint-Étienne back but being unable to do anything about it. It could easily devolve into war. A Storm Kingdom princess marrying Jason would be fuel to the fire.”

“Wouldn’t that be good for us?” Erika asked. “If Knowledge is fighting a war there, can she still stage one here?”

“It wouldn’t stop at a regional conflict,” Zara said. “The three pillars of Pallimustus civilisation are the churches, the Adventure Society and the governments. If two of those pillars come into conflict, it will pull in more nations and more churches. The planet could be plunged into a fresh war, just as another is ending.”

“That was the one with the messengers, right?” Ian asked. “Hasn’t that been going on for decades?”

“Yes,” Jason said. “From what my avatars in Rexion have been able to gather, the messengers found what they’d been looking for the whole time, and gradually withdrawing their forces ever since. Some have been reluctant to give up territory they’ve been fighting over for decades, but it is happening.”

“Did you manage to discover where the Purity relic was found?” Danielle Geller asked.

“No,” Jason said. “But I’d be willing to bet who finally revealed the location to whoever found it.”

***

In a cavernous underground bunker, illumination was provided by the glowing magical diagrams carved into every inch of the walls and ceiling. The light sparkled off the large object dominating the room: a gazebo with trellised sides, carved entirely from unbroken diamond. Green vines grew up and over the framework, white flowers with large petals growing all along them.

“It’s larger than I imagined,” Jamis Fran Muskar said as he walked around the relic.

“That’s part of the trouble,” Thadwick said. “It resists placement in dimensional storage. That makes it hard to move and hard to hide, especially radiating power the way it does. Arranging this storage space was trouble enough, and I don’t think we could move it again without being discovered. Nor could we file too many vampires through.”

“How many did you manage to cure of their sun-madness while you had it?”

“Too few. The risk of the relic being discovered is too high, and finding vampires is too hard. They don’t exactly volunteer, either. After being driven to ruthless amorality by the sun, they resist reverting to their previous personalities. Given how many kill themselves after, I suppose I can see why.”

“Yet, you persist.”

“This world sees vampires only as predators without care or remorse, and they are not always wrong. But they could be, if people were willing to help instead of killing them on sight.”

“How is the new process I gave you?”

“Easier. Replicable.”

He gestured at the purity relic.

“And doesn’t involve the thing that every adventurer and messenger in the world is looking for. It means we can set up multiple operations, and move them as necessary, all while drawing much fewer eyes. Where did you find this process? Some other world?”

“Oddly enough, a priest from your world developed it. He’s been trying to cure vampirism for years, and he’s done it, at least for lesser vampirism. Along the way he developed a few other processes, like removing the sun-taint that leads vampires to their lack of sociability. Funnily enough, most of what he’s accomplished can also be done by this divine relic.”

“If this priest is from this world, why wouldn’t he release it publicly?”

“He left this world some years ago, prior to completing his research. I had to go quite some way to obtain it, from someone who doesn’t like me very much. I’m glad that you are satisfied with my efforts.”

“Yes, you’ve been as good as your word, and I shall be the same. Purity’s relic is yours to take. As is the trouble of removing it discreetly.”

“Thank you. Now that our deal is done, would you be willing to answer a question for me?”

“You want to know where I found it.”

“I do. If that’s a private matter I understand, but I would appreciate you assuaging my curiosity if you can.”

“It was in the Mirror Kingdom. A wild place, so far north that the ice never thaws. A cave had frozen over centuries ago, and inside was a natural array that hid the presence of the relic.”

“And how did you come to find it? I don’t suppose a priest of Knowledge told you?”

“How did you know that?”

“Lucky guess. What did this priest ask in return?”

“That is a private matter.”

Jamis held up his hands in a placating gesture.

“Then I shall enquire no further. It was good doing business with you, Mr Mercer. You are using that name again, yes?”

“Yes, I… yes.”

“I suggest you make yourself scarce, Mr Mercer, and I will give you ample time to do so before moving the relic. You don’t want it getting out that you’re the one who gave it to me.”

“Is that a threat?”

“Just a friendly warning. You have nothing left that I desire, and you’re not quite diamond-rank yet, close though you may be. Until you cross that threshold, even that remarkable sword of yours is no danger to me.”

Thadwick nodded, resting a hand on the ruby and onyx hilt of his blade. The grip was a savage thing, with spikes that would dig into the hand of anyone who grabbed it.

“Did you know that sword was forged especially to slay my kind?”

“No, but it does so well. I’ve checked quite thoroughly.”

Jamis let out a laugh.

“So you have. Now, you’d best be on your way, as I suspect that extricating the relic will lead to contention from the locals.”

Thadwick nodded, saying no words of goodbye as he strode to the bunker’s only doorway and the stairs beyond. They led up into a long-disused warehouse, storing no more than dust and a few broken barrels. Waiting for him was Thalia Mercer, the mother of the man Thadwick had once been.

“Is it done?” she asked.

“Yes, we can wash our hands of the relic. All that remains is what Knowledge has asked of me.”

“I don’t like it. We have no idea what strange realm she intends to send you to, or who this man you have to kill is.”

“Not kill. The priest said that it would not be possible. I am to harry and hunt him, keep him busy until some affair of the goddess is done with, so that he cannot interfere.”

“I’m worried about you, son. What manner of man cannot die, but can interfere with the intentions of a god?”

***

“An idiot,” Akari proclaimed. “A complete and utter fool.”

She paced back and forth in the consulting room, never touching the comfortable armchair across from the one Arabelle Remore was sitting in.

“He’s your husband,” Arabelle said.

“He clearly doesn’t want to be!”

“I don’t think you believe that’s true.”

“Then why is he acting like he wants nothing more than to end our marriage?”

“I don’t think that is what he’s doing, even if he thinks it is. What you need to understand is that, in Itsuki’s mind, he’s never been good enough for you. When you started spending so much time away from him, he thought that you had finally realised it as well. Especially in the company of someone like Valdis. He is everything that Itsuki thinks of as the perfect man. A handsome prince, charismatic and talented. And one who shares your obsession with the sword, no less. In Itsuki’s mind, Valdis is the kind of man you deserve.”

“Don’t I get a say in that?”

“Yes, but the time you’ve been spending with Valdis makes your husband think that’s what you are saying.”

“It’s not about that.”

“I know. Valdis can help you back onto a path to sword mastery that you thought was closed to you. Even Itsuki understands that, at least intellectually. He knows that your true love is the blade, and Valdis can provide for you in that regard what your husband cannot.”

“I’m not obsessed with the sword.”

Arabelle raised her eyebrows and Akari turned away from her gaze.

“Akari, the first step on resolving your issues is having you both understand what those issues are, not what you think they are.”

“And how is Itsuki doing with that?”

“I won’t discuss his sessions with you any more than I will yours with him. I will simply say that you both have work to do before we explore joint sessions. Now, our time is over, and we both have preparations to make. You will be at the farewell ceremony in Australia this evening, I assume.”

After Arabelle had finished her post-session notes, she left the clinic early. She found her husband and son waiting for her outside.

“Aren’t you busy today?” she asked Rufus.

“Oddly, no,” Rufus told her. “I’ve said most of my goodbyes and settled my affairs in the clan. I thought it would be good to spend my last day here with my parents.”

“I see you weren’t busy,” Arabelle said to Gabriel.

“As it happens, I’m very busy. Who do you think has to pick up the slack with adventurer training now that our son is leaving?”

“He has been surprisingly diligent,” Rufus said.

“You didn’t have to say ‘surprisingly,’” Gabriel complained. “I’ve been teaching adventurers for a long time, you know. Our family runs a—”

“Don’t say it, father. I’m well aware of what our family does.”

Arabelle smiled warmly at her boys.

“Looking around,” Ian said, “you’d never know a war is coming.”

He was strolling along the beach boardwalk with his wife, daughter, brother-in-law and father-in-law. They were back in Casselton Beach, Jason and Erika’s hometown.

“Look closer,” Ken said. “These streets should be thick with tourists at this time of year. A lot of the shops are closed like it’s the off season. The rest have signs up for sales or reduced opening hours.”

“At least it’s not crowded,” Jason said. “You don’t get a lot of that when the weather is this perfect. It might be selfish, but I hope the war doesn’t touch this place. I wish I was going to be here to defend it.”

“Maybe you will,” Ken said. “Perhaps Knowledge isn’t as clever as you think, and you’ll escape whatever trap she’s set up for you.”

“I will, eventually. But however smart I think she is, she’s smarter. Every flaw, every misstep I thought she’d made over the years was a clever manipulation. But I don’t believe that she’s invincible.”

“You really think you can beat a god?” Erika asked.

“I’ve beaten worse. Gods are about rules. It’s what they’re made of, magic and rules. The mechanism that governs those rules was broken, which she exploited to make all of this possible. That mechanism has been fixed, now, which means I at least have a chance. I have to figure out which rules I need to exploit to defeat her.”

“Do you have any idea what those rules are?” Erika asked.

“Nope. There’s little point planning what I’ll do until I see what she’s done in full. Then I can get to the business of disrupting it. But let’s not talk about this anymore. Today is about being together while we have the chance. Now, let’s go gets some ice cream before the shop shuts.”

Emi danced ahead, the young woman acting like the girl she had been when they had all lived in this town. Jason smiled warmly, careful not to let the sadness creep into his expression or his aura. He grinned as Farrah emerged from the ice cream shop and Emi ran up to give her a hug.

“Hey,” Farrah said with a laugh. “You’re squeezing me like you didn’t just see me three hours ago.”

“But you’re going away!”

Farrah was not joining Team Biscuit on the return to Pallimustus, nor was she staying on Earth. Uncertain of what Knowledge’s plans would mean for Jason’s astral kingdom, Farrah would be there to help manage things, should something go wrong.

“What brings you here?” Erika asked as Emi relinquished her grip.

“I thought I would make one last pitch for you to ride out the war in Jason’s astral kingdom. We don’t know what exactly is going to happen, but you will be safe.”

“You’re an adventurer,” Emi said.

“I am,” Farrah said.

“Uncle Jason told me that adventurers live good lives. Money, power, influence.”

“That’s true.”

“He also said that there are days when you earn it. When you have to step up and prove that you’re worth everything you’ve been given.”

“That’s also true.”

“As much as we try to make the Asano Clan fair and equal,” Emi said, “the reality is that the Asano family gets the best of everything. We’ve gotten so much, kind of like adventurers. Now that the world needs people to step up, we can’t shirk our responsibilities.”

Farrah let out a resigned sigh.

“You did a good job with this one, Eri,” Farrah told Erika.

“She’s a good egg,” Jason said.

“Despite certain influences,” Farrah added.

“Is she talking about you or me?” Jason asked Ian, earning him a clip on the back of the head from Erika.

“Hey…”

“You should join us,” Erika told Farrah. “In fact, we should get all the team who don’t have any family to join ours for the day.”

“I think it’s just Neil,” Farrah said. “Zara is still organising the Storm Kingdom contingent for the return. Sophie is with her mother and Cal, and Humphrey is off with his mother.”

“Perpetually,” Jason muttered, earning a threatening glare from his sister.

“Lindy and Stella are off doing something they probably shouldn’t,” Farrah continued. “Taika brought his brother over from New Zealand and is staying with their mother. Rufus is with his parents. I think Clive finally figured out that women have more to offer than assisting him in the lab. That just leaves Neil.”

Jason opened a shadow portal and stepped through. A moment later he came back, dragging Neil through behind him.

“Jason, what are you…”

He trailed off as he saw Farrah and Jason’s family.

“Everyone is with family today,” Jason told him. “Yours are all in the other world, so today, we’re your family.”

Neil opened his mouth to say something snarky, then closed it.

“Thank you,” he said.

Dang… want to read but Artemis is about to launch!

Knowledge is sending vampire Thadwick to distract Jason while she does her plan. Smart. Even if Thadwick isn't a real threat, he certainly presents a complex moral problem to deal with. And with how this chapter is, that and more problems are right around the corner.

mhaj58

So it turns out that Thadwick is Knowledges plan. I really hope that sword doesn’t work like it did last time. Too much scheming spells the end of the schemer, and just maybe the plan doesn’t work as well as they think. Glad Akari is finally getting some self reflection, but I wish we saw Amy’s family and Cheryl before he leaves again. There are some issues to put to bed. Also never thought I’d hear the word sister-wife in that context. Lolol

Aaron S

Well, at the very least, I’m Jason and Thadwick are going to see each other again. I wonder why knowledge thinks that Thadwick is enough to delay jason. He clearly is since knowledge knows more than we do, but it doesn’t seem like that should be the case. That sword isn’t nearly dangerous enough to slow Jason down now. I have to wonder how good she is at predicting personal relationships because I have a feeling Jason is gonna forgive him. They might even team up.

Kallisti _

FFS, Shirt, we're gearing up for a battle. Stop pulling on heartstrings!

Agent P.

Happy don't mention what it is day Jason. Also fantastic chapter. And Damn Knowledge for using that poor poor Thadwick that way.

Kristy Riedel

Will this be the time that villain banter and the offering of redemption will finally work and have Vladwick join team Jason? I think he has a strong case for having helped Vladwick achieve something that mattered to him. Probably won't work if he believes Knowledge is a bigger threat to him than Jason is though.

Catrina

What about Nik?

Aaron Minster

Hey that was a really clever way to solve the “is he a brother or a cousin” dilemma. Also I see he still thinks of Emi as a young woman. Chronologically, she isn’t. Shes about 12 years younger than Jason. Who is at least in his fifties.

Julia

Where's Nik?

Corwynder

It's gotten sappy but they deserve it. Now all Jason has to do is kill Thadwick when he gets the chance.

Kristy Riedel

Record it. Get your priorities man. Lol. They aren't going to land, it's just a drive by.

Brisingaer

Calling it now. Thadwick has not matured as much as he seems like he has. Seeing Jason again will get his vigorous siscon juices flowing making him be excessively passionate about hunting and hurting Jason on behalf of Knowledge.

NonchalantGhost

Rember when he went supernova I back on pally and everyone saw him go full astral? Maybe something like that again?

John

Chapter definitely should have been called “Chekhov’s sword”. This is what, a 12 book pay-off?

Aaron S

The sort he has is much more powerful than that one was. But Jason is like 100 times better at all of his astral bullshit than he was then. Hell, Jamie even said that the sword isn’t threat to him. And if it isn’t a threat to him, then it won’t be a threat to Jason.

Scott Faulkner

my guess with The Vampire formally known as Thadwick is that his sword being made for disrupting gestalt entities would be very good against Jason. Also come on you know there is going to be like 3 chapters of "you were a dick, ya but you were an arsehole"

Tommy

I would normally, but I drove out here for it :)

Aaron S

Yes, I know the sword was made to disrupt gestalts. But Jason is so much more than that now. The last time back when he blew up, he was very inexperienced at using the powers of his astral kingdom through his vessel. He was limiting himself, because the weight of his power was dangerous for his mind and ego. He’s much more comfortable with the full scope of his abilities now and I’ll bet he can use them to negate whatever affect the disruption would have on his vessel

Dalth

So whatever happened to Clan Asano of Japan, and all the other schemers who called the pirates? Specifically, Noriko? I think her name was.

David Harshman

Neil has really grown into one of my favorite characters.

Mutny

probably cashing in on his cuteness, i mean, he is a rabbit...

David Harshman

Would you prefer a battle that pulls in the heartstrings during and afterward?

David Harshman

We saw what happened last time Jason was hit with that kind of sword...That may be Knowledge's goal, this time. Especially if Jason is in or near the Storm Kingdom when it happens. Lots of birds with that one stone, then...

Xksi

He said that because of rank. Jamie is Diamond, Jason is Gold, so is Thadwick. He is implying that if Thadwick was the same rank, he would be able to hurt him.

Henry Stukenborg

How is Knowledge going to cross the bridge while Jason is still Gold rank? She can plan all she likes but the World Phoenix still has the last say about dimensional travel.

RonGAR

Who else isn't shocked that Thadwick will be attempting to attack Jason again? Personally, not surprised in the least. What I will be a possible surprise is how he reacts when he finds out it's Jason again. ------------- Thalia once again sells out the whole world for her son. SMH. Well, she is committed now. No going back. She caused a split in the family that seems irreparable. She might as well keep going down her path.

Kallisti _

.........yeah, you win, that's 100% worse. But Shirt generally doesn't do that to us (except Jason, but dying is kind of his thing).

RonGAR

Yep... wondered that myself. Didn't see or hear of him at the BBQ either. But TAIKA always seems to get an honorable mention. But somehow Jasons ONLY SON, is never mentioned. SMH. Author SMH

Brandon Walker

I'm thinking the realistake knowledge is going to be making, is the same I don't remember his name that was trying to prove you could fight Jason, she can only know what others know, on palli, no one at any point truly understood how much power Jason would have access to, so she couldn't know either, and that's what will let him win, again

Zack

Which is still young by silver/gold standards

Meruem92

Honestly Thadwick has no idea who hes gonna be distracting, i reckon theyll have a chat more than a fight to be honest

Zack

Jason's comment about gods being the rules this chapter makes me think there will be a hiccup in the transfer the knowledge won't know of. Like that gods are shaped by the belief of the people and if the people of a world refuse the god, or believe something different, then Knowledge will have issues assimilating to Earth and that's what will be her downfall.

Samuel Britt

I'm curious if Jason getting out of Knowledge's trap is going to be as simple as Jason appealing to Thadwick's better nature. I'm also seeing a lot of people thinking Thadwick isn't a threat, but I can't imagine that's true. Jamis clearly states that he would need to be diamond to threaten him, which means he's wary enough of the sword. For the same reasons as Jason should be. Beyond that, Knowledge knows their strengths and weaknesses and thinks he'll be suitable for it. Jason has gotten stronger on earth, but unless he's gotten to diamond and we haven't been told (which wouldn't totally shock me), I imagine Thadwick is perfectly suited to tangle up Jason.

Slimymic

If it's Family day why isn't Nik with them?

Chiqui Joy

That’s what I’m tbinubf too. Like how Jason was “supposed” to fight Arbor but recruited him/her instead

Chiqui Joy

Ooooh ya, I wanna hear about Noriko getting her comeuppance!

WallacetheNPC

I don't know about your assumptions. Thaddwick is an almost diamond ranked gold enery vampire wielding a god tier anti-jason weapon. A copy of that weapon made jason level a city (Boko?). The real problem is there's no allies stepping forward which is annoying since Jason helped so many people.

Esther Prenosil

I him and Jason don't hate each other. They just like to pretend they hate each other. Like annoying siblings, and he did just get invited to family time.

Michael Romo

They scattered like roaches when Jason got his compound back before shirts health declined

Michael Romo

I like how shirt is closing those holes

Hayden Leech

No diamond rankers allowed. Sure. But knowledge isn’t a diamond ranker.

Hayden Leech

Pretty sure they got off Scott free. It’s been fifteenish years

Kristy Riedel

Well, yeah, alright then. But I fished the chapter twice before watching live launch on TV. ;o)

Kevari

Taika’s confluence essence is actually Comedian 😂

Soulessone

Please on the release have Nik there

Hayden Leech

I wonder how Jason being basically the champion of vampire rights and continued existence on earth will play into Thadwicks Underground Vampire Railroad agenda. When in this funky space if Jason can prove to thadwick how he treats vampires. Heck, even offers thadwick and his people residency in the vampire city it could be essential in flipping the script on knowledge

Soli116

Maybe that will be a future novella. That would be cool.

Blake N.

“What manner of man cannot die, but can interfere with the intentions of a god?” *** “An idiot,” Akari proclaimed. “A complete and utter fool.”” I always love cuts like this

Katy Ferguson

I don't think it counts as dimensional incursion from WP's perspective. They said in a recent chapter that the two worlds were effectively the same world, which is the only reason she can "transfer" at all.

Richard Bonds

I hope we get to see more Neil soon! ❤️ And maybe a certain rabbit man! ❤️❤️

Henry Stukenborg

No - she’s far more. The real deal was no more power than he had so no diamond rankers or beyond.

Kristy Riedel

It's a shame that his father never shows up.

Tim Parry

Ok that was way too sweet of a closing scene!

Tim Parry

Also, where is Nik lol

Kristy Riedel

Poor knowledge coming to a world where people no longer believe in facts.

Kristy Riedel

But Jason is beyond too, as well as only gold. Paradoxically

Soli116

He very popular and hopping (pun intended) around all the family groups.

Athy192

Does knowledge even need to "enter" the Earth Universe? Since a god is just some collection of sentient magic, I suspect if Knowledge pumps enough worshipers in that their collective faith would allow her to just manifest in Earth Universe. Particularly in this case where much of the magic in Earth Universe has a connection with the Pali Universe. Although I still don't understand Knowledges end game. What is she getting, assuming both universes will eventually end. (Actually, I'm assuming Knowledge does not even have that long as an aspect of sentient beings. isn't she just one extinction event away from oblivion). I would guess that her actual objective is the bridge itself and then infiltrate the astral being known as Jason (making her a better deception god than Deception [assuming they are not one and the same].)

Andrew P

Threaten doesn't necessarily mean permanently maim or kill. His avatar is peak diamond rank.

Alex Cox

Nik is prolly with Stash

Samuel Britt

Exactly, that's why I pointed out Jason is currently still gold, just like Thadwick. We should have every expectation he is a threat to Jason.

Kevari

She could apply for god of the internet maybe. Hopefully it splits her personality apart so many times she can’t bring her full power to bear either

Darth Bob

Very clever and sweet can’t wait for the whole book to come out

Kevari

Thalia is quite the disappointment. Not because she keeps helping Thadwick but because she failed at being a mother to him in the first place. That’s what’s been driving her since Thadwick betrayed his family—and eventually world—back in Greenstone: Guilt. Which knowledge knows well how to use to her own advantage. So far, Thalia has barely been important in her own right aside from not sharing information she knows could aid the adventure society, churches and governments. Though, I suppose she was quite important to Thadwick since he’s taken his family name again. He might’ve succeeded without her but likely wouldn’t have been as stable as he seems to be currently.

Kevari

She was born when Jason was in college

Kevari

Where tf are the Palli gods is what I wannna know. But then again, they didn’t do anything when disguise pretended to be purity so why change the process I guess. I see where Jason’s coming from. Magic gods are definitely more trouble than they’re worth half the time and useless the rest.

Stephanie Washburn

Hey, the sword and Thadwick are finally coming back around! Gotta love it.

ThoMiCroN

The Storm King : I also have a family like that. I have an aunt that married her own uncle so my cousins have two different relationships to me.

WallacetheNPC

And the GAB are like thanks for fixing our chair, now handle your own shit.

BloodStorm

Well this war is going to get crazy

DJ Doughty

How many flags can we get in one chapter. Ahhhhhh!

Aaron Minster

Nah that’s not it. In the early earth chapters Jason is only about a year older than he was at the beginning of the story, and he was 20 something. During the earth arc Emi is almost 12 or 13

Aaron Minster

Also Ian knew Jason when he was like 12 (he tells Farrah that somewhere way back I remember) suggesting Erika and Ian had been married quite some time by then

Daniel is ŁØNE

Hurt is a strong word here, delay maybe, but hurt Jason physically is a toss up, best he could do would be to destabilize his prime avatar. Other than that I don't see how else he could be a threat in any capacity, Jason's body is at best a flesh bag he channels his soul through, his prime avatar being a particularly important flesh bag but a flesh bag nonetheless, unless that blade could somehow destroy a budding universe it is unlikely it could do much harm to jason other than being a massive delay which is really all it needs to be since, all Knowledge needs is to delay him, or at least that's what she thinks. That said I do see there being a long chase, maybe even a fight of epic proportions, then eventually them talking it out, Jason is kinda a champion for the whole vampire lives matter thing as long as the vampires themselves aren't being monsters, and clearly that is important to this version of Thadwick so i could see them eventually joining the same side. I do kinda want Thalia to get bitch slapped just once tho, her entire character is very much a disappointment, in how she keeps supporting the wrong thing and betraying her own people.

Adrian

We should all wish to kick ass and chew bubblegum as well as he 😉

Azayrian105

Wow a lot of people are going to die aren't they.

Daniel is ŁØNE

I doubt that sword is as dangerous as it once was, for one Jason has far more control over his nature than he once did so i can't imagine destabilizing him would be even close to as easy as it once was. Furthermore the sword is more anti-messenger than anti-jason. When Thadwick responded to Jamis he mentions checking the effectiveness himself, and lets be real here the guy was not going around killing astral kings, he was referring clearly to messengers (getsalt beings), when the blade was previously used Jason was far less than he is now in both nature, cosmic significance, control and raw power, God-tier or not I can't imagine that weapon functioning the same when it's target is fundamentally different, honestly more than being someone who could truly harm Jason in any non-temporary capacity I think Thadwick is more of a stalling tactic than anything else since all knowledge seems to think she needs is time. As impressive as the sword is, if it was that easy to sanction someone gods, astral kings and GAB's alike would not be as strong as they seem, and the only actual real way to harm Jason in any other capacity than emotional is sanctioning him, even endless torture and sealing would likely not work as effectively since a portion of him would always exist in more than one place at once, due to his astral kingdom and claimed zones existing. Thadwick is a problem but I doubt he is a lethal one in any capacity, I actual think he is likely only one of the plans knowledge has to stall Jason as it would be foolish to not expect some fall out if she doesn't do something to actually sanction Jason, since even if he loses here he wont take it lying down, and frankly he has nothing if not time to come up with a way to screw her over. Also I imagine the lack of help Jason is getting is going to be a plot point and there is a reason behind it, since it would make little sense for the other gods to not intervene, the GAB's are one thing since Pali is just a speck on the universal scale, but the other gods and frankly some of the authority in Pali should have a bone to pick with knowledge, especially since she cause a war and quite literally annexed a kingdom so it's weird that there has been no contact at all.

Mitha

Finally we got closure about the brother cousin storm king.

Litmas

"You may as well take a picture out of your girl back home and explain how you're going to have a kid soon and you're a week away from retirement."

Michael Cain

I agree, Chadwick finally sees whI is opponent is and just quietly puts his sword away, raises his hands and says ... I shoulda known. Then immediately changes team to Jason's and they do a team up to foil her plans 🤣. Finally making up with the Mercers for picking on poor Thickwick back in the day 😅

Michael Cain

I like to believe: Jason had Shade seek them out and monitor them. Just so he could keep tabs and know how to counter whatever they get up to, or put and end to them if it's something he can't stop or the cost would be to high?

Michael Cain

I wonder what it is Jason is going to be tempted to do to fix something, that everyone warned him off of. Killing Thadwick? Not killing Thadwick? Time travel to stop himself from creating the Thadwick enemy? Or were the things said to Jason so he would have that knowledge running around in his head and that would be giving the info to Knowledge to attempt to use it to defeat him?

Michael Cain

🤣 .... "I'm getting to old for this"

His Dad

recovering after watching "Watership Down"

Tartlet

I guess you could say this Goddess has really good working knowledge of the battle field. 😁

darksheep

I am a bit confused by the fact knowledge was allowed to tell someone where the relic is, since some god said (not sure which, but back a few books) that the gods made a deal and are not allowed to interfere.

Jules Deathwish

I always assumed that the Time Loop would get kicked off with Emi's death. Figured that was the only thing that he would risk destroying the entire multi-verse to undo.

Ariellus

Is he? Because she told him he needs to travel to another plane but Jason will be on Pallimastus.... so who is the target. Or is that the first hickup of the goddess

Wicked Monkey Software

That makes a lot of sense. It would also explain why the time astral being said it was “almost certain” he would do it.

Thomas Todd

If Knowledge suddenly has a moustache then Stash has some questions to answer

Worros

Disguise could have been the one to tell him too.

Thomas Todd

I honestly don't think that Knowledge would kill Emi, kidnap and hold hostage sure but not kill. Not because she's above it but because I think she knows that Jason would never, literally never stop trying to destroy her, regardless if it's now or in 10,000 years Jason would get his revenge and he can't be permanently stopped

Worros

"I'll be right back"

Thomas Todd

I honestly think that the Thadwick plan will backfire. I think Knowledge knows that he still hates Jason deep down but at the same time still doesn't understand people enough and Thadwick will refuse to attack him

Ariel

Jason is beyond, but Jason is not technically on earth. Just his avatar is

Ariel

Nik is going to show up just in time for Easter... I see what Shirt did there

SmokeJam

That transition from "who would challenge a god" to "an idiot" is absolutely beautiful.

Mr_Top_Hat

Things are gonna get so fuckin sad soon

Teddy Torres

You cant convince me that the whole "brother/cousin" debacle wasnt because of the typo he made in book 12 we all pointed out

Irina

Hello, tyftc Shirt. Is this the last chapter of book 13 and the last chapter before Shirt takes his vacation? Thank you

Kyle Hunter

I love how Neil and Jason's relationship has developed over the years. In the past, Niel would have rather died than spend 1on1 time with Jason. (No Farrah doesnt count, neither does Humpy)

jeffrey niski

Well hopefully thadwick is smart enough not to touch Jason's family. Because then Jason really will do the time loop

Remy Gramont

I was thinking the same thing

Arieh Sochaczevski

Thanks for the chapter! I’m vaguely disappointed to learn that Jason isn’t completely wrong about Knowledge. It would have been interesting for it to turn out Knowledge was a “good guy” and everything was 90-degrees from what he thought was going on. I was also more than vaguely hoping for the redemption of the Thadwick.

Ligeia

Totally, but it made for some excellent team banter so was a successful save!

Kristy Riedel

But bad policy to follow. He can't resolve the uncle/father issue with Jamar and Miguel the same way.

Kristy Riedel

Is Nik going to show up with eggs? Also, something else we haven't heard about in a long time are the messengers being budded in Jason's astral kingdom.

Kristy Riedel

I think there is not going to be a time loop. That has been prevented by telling Jason that it would destroy most of the cosmos.

Kristy Riedel

Healer told Jason that the gods had agreed to leave the purity artifact for mortals to settle. If it was just an "agreement" and not a pact with binding commitments it can be ignored. She seems to be betraying everybody.

Ariel

I low key think he is going to win against purity using his birthing tree

Daniel Wills

For me, Thadwick has been redeemed. Thalia reconnected with him and is the mom he wanted way back in book3.

Malcolm

I really hope Jason find a way to put knowledge down

Arieh Sochaczevski

That’s not redemption. Redemption is earned, not just getting what you want/need.

Alex Schellenberg

If Jason consumes Knowledge with his nearly cosmic powers, he will know more than pop references from the 80's.

Jim Butler

Thadwick hasn't been redeemed. It's a new person and he's still about to try to kill Jason.

joker ledger

Like jason said, the gods were supposed to keep others in check but they have been ignoring that with knowledge and disguise. Jason has some pointed questions for then when he come back

joker ledger

Sometimes foreshadowing is painfully obvious lol

joker ledger

That is some peak irony that vampire thadwick will be the one to fight jason in the final war. Two men who started their grudge as mortal that had changed completely now fight again as complete strangers

Sean

I don’t think Thadwick holds any ill will towards Jason. He’s fulfilling his end of a deal.

Sean

He’d have said that even if he didn’t mean it for sure.

Sean

I think Jason will view Thadwick as just as much a pawn as Knowledge and will find a way to have them both fulfill their roles while subverting Knowledge somehow. I don’t think Thadwick will be able to back out of his part of the deal easily but I do think he will be how Jason exploits Knowledge’s rules.

Eithra

I'm confused on why Thalia Mercer doesn't know who her son will fight. She was never this clueless before. Thadwick yes, but not his Mom.

Catfan

My guess is that the gods who would oppose Knowledge are saving their response "power" or authority for when it will be more useful. Basically that their lack of action against her is tactical. It's also possible they exhausted themselves already with the protracted war against the messengers.

Scrubzero66

Oh god no palli pop references 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Scrubzero66

Oh fudge Jamis is betting heavy on Jason and Thadwick to take down knowledge but I think Thadwicks catalyst will be Thalia or Cassandra getting hurt or ☠️.

Joseph Harris

I always felt that the two of them were like siblings more than any other members of the team. They bicker nonstop but they’re incredibly kind to one another when they think no one is looking. After that they go right back to insulting one another.

Joseph Harris

I definitely think they’re going to play a major roll. They were ready to “bud” years ago from their pods. They’ve probably been training for years in his Astral Kingdom. Many of them might even be gold rank by now. I think that might be Jason’s trump card. That could also be the reason why Farrah is going to the Astral kingdom during the battle. She could be leading them.

Raven

Maybe the swords not for Jason .. but someone else

J

Ah the long awaited duel of thadwick and Jason. Jamis’ game is like 5D chess. The pieces he’s moving around the long bets he’s making. Knowledge is not a threat to him and she knows it. If it would benefit him he could kill her easy I figure. So his game is beyond this spat of an upstart god and an Original. Thing is I don’t know what knowledge thought the outcome was gonna be. No matter what she does even if she beats Jason and keeps him from his friends as she takes over the world. Once he hits diamond rank it’s over for her. And all the knowledge two worlds won’t be able to save her.

J

Jason is not gold anymore. My proof is last chapter. When asked if he could become the god of earth. He said it would be too limiting for him. I took this as his prime avatar is Diamond ranked and he is capable of pushing into transcendence if he wanted to. Just a theory. I think after the fight with evil Clive he realized he could syphon off the bridge to push his abilities into diamond. Prob happened after his last bird form.

Zach

Argh the anticipation. TYFTC!!

Samuel Britt

Thats quite the leap in logic. This is hardly the first time Jason has referred to godhood as limiting. Jason is more than a god in his astral kingdom, and was since he freshly had it. He's never had any need or desire to be a god. I don't see what that point of view has to do with him being diamond rank

Daniel Storm

Awwww guuyyyyys, Neil's growing!

Daniel Storm

I think she's been so traumatized by her everything that's happened in the past 50+ years that she's become blinded. All she's worried about is losing her son again and that's causing her to be stupid. Trauma/Greif can do funny things to a person.

Addie

1. Gods are regulators for local magical concepts and coalesce when magic is strong enough 2. Pallimustus has a ton of extra magic, more than other worlds, and therefore a ton of extra gods 3. Earth is about to take its share of that magic to balance both worlds out 4. Pallimustus won't have enough magic to support all of its gods anymore 5. A god DOES need to move to Earth 6. Knowledge and Purity both sound like the kind of gods Earth would have coalesced 7. Knowledge is a particularly good match for modern Earth rather than Pallimustus. We substituted technology and knowledge for our missing gods. She just fits. 8. Pallimustus' other gods are all in on it 9. If something has to fill that void naturally it might just end up being chosen by magic, and that might be a vampire god, or a war god, or a fascist god. We're a pretty bad world in general. 10. Vladwick is still lurking around.

DirePants

I know Farrah is one of Jason most trusted friends but I can’t deny that the power he gave her over himself always worried me. Now with Knowledge plotting and planning I can’t help but worry she has plans for Farrah as well. And she’ll be IN Jason’s astral world too. Unless I’m to not privy to a reason as to why Knowledge wouldn’t know and oppose the idea I’m inclined to believe Knowledge is aware of Farrah’s power over Jason. And while Farrah isn’t as… obsessed with knowledge as say, Clive, I wonder if Knowledge would use knowledge like bait or a quid pro quo to coerce Farrah. Oan: I wonder if the climax of this battle will be very different than we expect. Knowledge knows that information in the wrong hands, especially in the case of people from our world. Maybe her coming over would prevent someone from eventually using knowledge to destroy earth and by extension Pallimustus. It might require some large scale… sacrifices… that Jason would be opposed to, naturally. So from Knowledge’s perspective it’s more like self-defense. 🤔 Who knows? 🤷🏾‍♂️

JW Saxby

🩶 Tyftc 🍻

joseph peltier

The only advantage Jason has is that he doesn’t know what he knows. It’s gonna be fun seeing what else he’s been keeping from himself when the ignorance war is in full swing.

Litmas

Listening through the series again, and Dawn's warning makes so much more sense now! The way she says she can't say anything isn't because she doesn't want the team to know, but because she doesnt want Knowledge to know.

Aaron

Knowledge know everything someone on her planet knows. So Dawn not saying something wasn't why Knowledges sake but the Earths sake. Like Jason said, if he had any hint he would have done something dumb and destroyed the Earth.

tsrh

She has a trap set up for when jason returns to pallimistus, at leaast Jason alluded to that potentiality in an earlier chapte ie send him where he can't get in the way of her invasion of earth as killing him isn't an option and not even necessary. Thadwick will also be sent there to impede Jasons escape attempt it would seem

StarkRG

I hope Thadwick changes his mind when he sees that it's Jason that Knowledge has pitted him against. Let Jason do his talk-fu at him and get him to switch sides.

Matthew Quarles

Ikr, we keep hearing about how he’s going to heal his connection with him after being an absent father but he’s still a deadbeat dad. Everyone is meeting with their closest family and he’s nowhere to be seen 😔

Matthew Quarles

Ikr, Jason is still deadbeat dad. How can you not include your son in theses moments.

KyoDaDungeon!!

Dammit Thadwick you just can't help yourself can you always the pawn. Also well there goes the 1% chance Jason was wrong. Say it with "Knowledge All Along"
