As the intelligence czar for an empire that spanned galaxies and held a position on the cosmic stage, very few questions had answers beyond the reach of Anson Cazus. As a result, Anson had developed a loathing for those few queries whose resolutions were denied to him.

Some mysteries were easier to accept than others. There were cosmic events taking place on such an escalated level that to involve the Imperium was to expose it to risk, something Anton would accept even ignorance to avoid. Even if he suspected that Princess Dawn held those answers, he trusted they were kept from him for a reason.

The princess was usually at the heart of affairs which Anson deemed too dangerous to investigate at anything but a large remove. Her position as First Daughter of the World-Phoenix had brought the Imperium to even greater prominence, but that prestige also brought attention and envy.

When it came to matters like the Cosmic Throne, and the new great astral being almost certainly linked to its restoration, Anton could live without answers. Some knowledge was too dangerous to hold. But the people princess Dawn had bought in to be housed in the palace were a more approachable mystery, making his lack of answers more frustrating.

With the resources of the Imperium, it had not been hard to discover where they were from. Why those people mattered to the princess was a more difficult question. The isolated world from which they had come had one major asset to impede intelligence gathering: irrelevance. Never having been worth the effort before, meant that Anton had to task fresh assets to gather that information.

His agents did not disappoint, finding a number of threads to tug on. The world in question was one anchor point of a link between universes, and those universes were subject to the historical event known as The Builder’s Folly. Furthermore, the last few decades had seen renewed attention from the great astral beings and their agents, including Princess Dawn herself.

This suggested that these universes were a focal point of some larger plot, or a conflict between great astral beings. More detailed inquiry had proven challenging, as the astral beings had put isolating restrictions in place, particularly on the anchor worlds connecting the universes.

As for the people that Dawn had brought to the Imperium, the princess had made it clear that they were off-limits. They had been present for some time, and now Helsveth had brought an entirely new set, which did not make things easier. Helsveth had spent much of her childhood in the Imperium under Dawn’s tutelage and held great respect for the empress and emperor-consort, but she had now succeeded Dawn’s position as prime vessel of the World-Phoenix. She was now someone whose actions Anton was extremely reticent to investigate.

He sat in his office, a data hub whose magitech cost more than most planets. Screens covered the walls, some with images, still or moving, while others scrolled text. There was no desk, no chair in which to get even a modicum of relaxation. If he required either for a task, they would manifest into being. In the centre of the room was a large, conical projector. Floating over it was an image of the dimension ship Dawn’s first guests had arrived in. It had been traced back to a pirate fleet that prowled the rural backwaters of the cosmos, the kind that were never quite worth the effort to hunt down.

A set of three vertical screens on the wall behind him vanished, turning into an open doorway. Standing on the other side was Anton’s chief of staff, but he didn’t turn to face her, his eyes still glued to the projection.

“Sir, the royal family is requesting you.”

“About?”

“They wish to meet with you, Princess Dawn and her newly arrived guests.”

Anton turned to face his assistant.

“All of them?”

“Yes, sir. We may finally get some of those answers.”

It was a city of death. The brickwork was shattered and crumbling, most buildings damaged with many collapsed entirely. The cobbles and flagstones underfoot were cracked and broken, spiky weeds of black and purple growing through like diseased veins. The streets were filed with detritus; bits of fallen building, broken carts and fallen fruit stalls. The produce had long turned to rot, much like the city’s populace who had been reduced to undead mockeries of life.

Then came the fire. Ethereal ghost flames stormed through the city, sweeping across the streets, buildings and people as if their corruption was an accelerant. Overhead, the night sky was no longer visible, glowing butterflies blocking it out and washing the city in blue and orange light.

Jason walked through the streets, mostly ignoring the undead as the ghost fire did the work for him. Occasionally an undead would rush at him in a frenzy, only to be dismissively carved apart by Jason’s sword. Those wounds vanished as the fires took them, undoing the corruption and purging the stain of undeath. Like an apocalypse running backwards, the ghost fires made whole the broken buildings and people alike. Hideous undead were turned back into normal people, and the dread necropolis back into a city.

Jason walked through the streets now filled with unconscious but restored souls. He strolled, his sword dangling casually from his hand, red sigils glowing along the black blade. In the sky above, the butterflies faded away, revealing a starry sky and a bright, full moon. The moonlight washed over the city like a cleansing balm, as if clearing away the last of the filth.

Jason stood in the middle of an empty market square, oddly clear of unconscious souls. The moonlight shone off the freshly cleaned cobbles, slicked wet from the damp night air. Shade bodies moved about, acting as scouts. With his aura disempowered, Jason’s normally potent senses were likewise diminished.

“You were right, Mr Asano,” Shade told him. “Acting at night on such a large target has drawn their attention.”

“How many?”

“I cannot be certain; they are effective at hiding themselves. I can confirm six, but I suspect as many as double that. How do you want to approach this?”

“Let them come. We’ll see what they’ve got.”

“Mr Asano, I will remind you that my brother has modified them specifically to hunt you. What they have may well be more than you are ready for.”

“Then I’m going to need you to rescue me.”

“I do not approve of your cavalier approach.”

“Umber doesn’t want me dead. He wants me miserable. Running and hiding.”

“Have you considered that he may have approached that by creating a threat you need to run and hide from?”

“I guess we’ll see.”

A sinister aura flooded the square, a cold and enervating sensation. Jason could sense multiple sources, all around him, yet they somehow combined to form a single force that pressed down on his spirit. It was aura suppression, but of a kind unlike any he’d experienced. Rather than crushing his aura down, it was felt like it was being siphoned away.

“Mr Asano, I could—”

“No,” Jason said. “It will only work well once, so let’s save it for when it matters.”

Even with its attached power now at diamond-rank, Jason’s aura was insufficient to resist the combined effects draining it away. As his aura became fully suppressed, he felt access to his essence abilities cut off. His cloak remained, as did the power infused into his weapon, having already been out and ready. He would not be able to replace them should he need to, however, or use the active effects of his cloak.

It was only after they were certain his powers were suppressed that the energy vampires stepped out of their hiding places, stepping out of alleyways and darkened corners. As Shade predicted, there was a full dozen of them.

“So, you’re Jason Asano,” one of them said. “They were right about your arrogance. You should have run.”

Jason said nothing as he panned his head around, his orange and blue eyes shining from the darkness of his hood.

“I’ve also heard you use the Way of the Reaper,” the vampire continued. “That is the fighting style of our order. Do you really think you can beat us with it?”

Jason remained silent. The vampire snarled and flung himself at Jason in a gold-rank blur. He seemed to pass right through Jason and keep going, crashing through a wall. The other eleven leaped into action immediately, lunging on Jason.

***

Dawn led Helsveth and Team Biscuit into what she had told them was a parlour. It did have a variety of couches and lounging chairs but was spacious enough to contain a small town, three storey buildings included.

“You could fit my entire academy in here,” Rufus said.

“Academy?” Helsveth asked.

“My family runs a school,” he said absently as he continued to take in the sheer scope of the room.

Belinda pulled a tray of filled shot glasses out from her storage space, but Humphrey waved at it with a prohibiting gesture.

“Not now,” he said. “We may have had our fun, but that was in the private residence. This is the palace proper, and we must be proper in turn. We have seen the empress and emperor as Dawn’s parents, but what we see next will be the monarchs of an empire beyond all of our comprehensions. It’s time to put away frivolities and act with dignity, if not for our own sake, then for that of our hosts. If we act the fool, then we not only disrespect them, but shame them for having allowed us into these august halls. Do we all understand?”

Belinda put away the tray, but kept a rebellious expression on her face.

“Jason would cause trouble,” she muttered.

“Jason’s impulse control has not made him a beacon of respect,” Humphrey said. “But you also know that he has worked hard to overcome those impulses and be more diplomatic. Regardless of how effective he may or may not have been, even he has come to see the value of treating people with respect. I expect the same from all of you.  Lindy, you are too smart and too cunning not to know how to do this, and why it matters.”

Belinda grumbled but there was no sincerity in it.

***

Shadows danced under the moonlight. Vampires dashed and darted like piranhas around a chunk of meat, glinting blades lunging to bite. Jason’s cloak flared with stars, flowing around him like a living thing. The vampires hissed hunger and frustration as their swords and knives missed, Jason’s blade slicing them for their troubles.

The vampires moved fast, but jerkily, forced to stop and start. Gold-rank speed could only do so much in the face of physics, and carelessness would send them tumbling across the ground or flying into walls. Jason could move just as swiftly but didn’t, not having his aura to control himself fully. He chose to confront the reckless pace of the vampires with precision and control, using and deception and positioning to counter their advantage in speed and numbers. He used their own advantages against them, leading them, in their uncontrolled haste, to interfere with one another as they rushed around.

Where they stopped and started, Jason was ever on the move, always where he needed to be, and never where they expected. His shroud of darkness and stars masked his exact position as enemy blades stabbed through it, hitting nothing but air. Their overreach left them exposed to counter attacks, his blade glowing red as it sliced vampiric flesh. Jason’s powers were suppressed but his sword still left afflictions that consumed life force, leaving behind wounds that spread rot into the vampires’ bodies. It would take a lot to kill a gold-ranker, but Jason was happy to make as many cuts as required.

The vampires were swiftly confused at the effectiveness of Jason’s tactics. They fought with the same style, had suppressed his powers and outnumbered him twelve to one, yet they were left dancing in the palm of his hand. They were not fools, however, and switched up their approach. They slowed themselves down, improved their coordination and stopped crowding in as uncoordinated individuals. They used their numbers as an asset instead of a liability, moving together to run him down and corral him in.

Refusing to be penned in, Jason broke out of their encirclement. In breaking past, one the vampires’ weapons finally found purchase, even a grazing cut sending searing pain through Jason. He realised immediately that these were weapons derived from copying Thadwick’s own, highly effective against gestalt beings like him. He’d once been impaled by such a weapon, the resulting eruption of power annihilating a city.

Jason ignored the pain, an old acquaintance he had little time for. Even as his blood splattered on the ground he was dashing into an alley, leading the vampires on a chase. They did not just follow blindly, only a few going down the alley. Other leapt onto rooftops or moved around buildings, aiming to flank and pin him in. What none of them noticed were the leeches crawling out of the pool of Jason’s blood as if it were a portal.

***

“Let me see if I am following this, Princess,” Anson said to Dawn. They were seated at a round table, along with Helsveth, Team Biscuit, the empress and the emperor-consort.

“This friend of yours,” Anson continued, “is somehow gold-rank while also being an astral king, a god, and a great astral being.”

“He’s not completely any of those things,” Dawn clarified. “He’s not very much a god, definitely abnormal as an astral king, and far too mortal compared to other great astral beings. Even the Builder, who was mortal himself.”

“And he’s currently trapped in a corrupted afterlife,” Anson said.

“Yes.”

“Well, that does answer a lot of long-standing questions. I’m not sure how any of that is of use to the Imperium, but I’m sure we’ll find some way to leverage it.”

“How we leverage it,” Dawn said, “is by using the time he is trapped to help raise his companions to diamond-rank. His team, and other allies I had ferried from their own worlds. We put them through our training programs.”

“How does that help us?” Anson said. “We have more and stronger diamond-rankers already.”

“It helps us because one day, Jason Asano is going to be a great astral being in the fullness of his power, and the Imperium will be a friend who helped him in his time of need.”

“Great astral beings don’t have friends,” Anson pointed out.

“No,” Orbis said, the emperor-consort breaking his silence. “But imagine the benefits if one did.”

Anson was a very smart man who was very good at his job, so he didn’t have to imagine for long.

“Training programs,” he said. “I’ll have the program directors start drawing up a regimen immediately.”

***

Jason led the vampires on a merry chase through the alleys and backstreets of the city, all while the purified souls slowly roused around them. He had a few close calls, but Gordon intervened at several critical moments. Whenever Jason was pressured enough that a blow would land, Gordon was suddenly there, storming up in a cloud of blue and orange sparks to produce a shield.

Finally, Jason led his pursuers back to the square where the battle had begun. The vampires pushing their speed to the limit to catch him ran headfirst into a hulking abomination that made the undead look pleasant by comparison. A mass of flesh the size of a school bus, nine grotesque necks stretched out like fat, distended snakes, each one terminating in a round mouth with layered rings of teeth. Most of the vampires managed to veer away, but three crashed right into it, the nine heads immediately moving to latch on to them. The remaining vampires took one look at the hideous thing and fled, disappearing into the night.

MentalLogic

That's mean running away from Colin. He is such a good boy....he hardly ever plays with his food 😅😜😂

Unwillingmainer

No one ever expects the surprise blood monstrosity.

Firstname Lastname

Second paragraph - Anton = Anson? Edit: actually An[ts]on is sprinkled around in several places.

Parker Bond

Is his name Anton or Anson?

Seaspike

Colin's a good boy

Dalth

I expected that the Spy Guy would have to be explained exactly how much Jason Asano values friendship over alliances before moving. Or that the Emperor Consort and Empress would have to have it explained. That Jason would crush their enemies simply because a friend asked is… an alien view for an intergalactic magic empire that spans multiple star systems.

Harbby

He's a good boy.

Tijay Arnie

It's funny that, that is the premises of a few stories, 'What if the [System] was my friend?'

Dalth

They are literally (energy yes) Vampires! How can they NOT expect the blood monstrosity?!

Thomas Foster

This is literally like crack to me. TYFTC

Jarrett Glass

I am glad Colin got to have a snack! He is a good boy.

chad osborn

Colin is such a good boy

Thomas Russell

It's so good. That's all I can say. Thanks so much.

CJ T

I’m choosing to believe Anton and Anson are brothers and we will soon find out they are octuplets

Timothy

Colin gets to play now! So much energy, blood and crunchy stuff!

Kalanaere

Thats it! Humphrey has to go! He officially has been branded a heretic for stopping the game

Hayden Leech

You’re 3 chaps away from a brutal withdrawal

Tessa King

Aww all that prep for a Collin snack. Such a sweet thing.

Nergie

Ah the good old im not stuck in here with you, your stuck in here with me from Jason. Nice.

Hayden Leech

Jason is an affliction specialist. I bet a couple of those vampires slinked off to die in an alley somewhere as the afflictions consume them.

Hayden Leech

I bet we are going to see Soramir here hahahaha. He is acquainted with Dawn and a cosmic traveller in his own right

Max Murray

Awesome chapter! Keen to see Thadwicks peak gold rank debut, that fights been a long time coming! Also just an edit note, you've written First Daughter of the World Phoenix instead of First Sister

Mason Ryel

Shhhhh don’t remind me

Mitha

Here I am, prepared to make a witty comment about the good boy. And others were before me, what a shame!

Marcus Aurelius

So Jason’s wifey is taking the team to Diamond….I wonder if there are any other diamonds in the future? 💍 I’m just saying that’s impressive and symbolic 😂

Maximilian Riedl

Hey am i the only one who really would Like the progress of jasons abilities? 😅

Gernt Perkinsons

I’m waiting for raythe to show up with vellius and tell dawn what happened along with Jasons threat to the cosmos. I wonder what the reaction would be

Parker Bond

Typos: Anton* (should be Anson) Streets filed*(or filled?) with detritus using and* deception (and-> any)

Parker Bond

And they are all intelligence directors

Colin Holloway

Colin is my favorite, for obvious reasons

brian phillips

At least Colin finally got to eat some people.

Jeff

Hydra world eater Colin was not on my bingo card

CJ T

Except Ashton. He’s the handsome one

Ken Lukasewicz

Taika, Gary, Emi, and others in the pirates' dimensional ship?

RonGAR

"A FEAST!" -Colin when he saw what came around the corner. ------------------ Liking how Jason is fighting. Good use of his abilities.

Malnayil

How long is this next break gonna be again?

Ant

There are two different groups of vampires that were shipped by Umber. The Thadwick energy vampires, and 'the way of the reaper' modified standard vampires. If I understand the chapter, the vampires Jason faced in this chapter were from the second group.

Ligeia

Shirt certainly has programmed us all well. Every time Colin appears, I say to myself, "He's such a good boy!" The comments today feel like we're all saying it in unison! 😁

Joseph Harris

They cut Jason with swords that were similar to the one Thadwick has so they could be the energy Vamps.

jeffrey niski

Colin finally getting to eat a lot of people. Doesn't even have to ask dad if it's okay. The meals just come to him.

joseph peltier

No, I’m pretty sure I heard that one of them is a tailor.

Dax

He's a GROWING boy. He needs his nutrients. It's not fair for those mean vampires to deprive him of such when they are entirely made of nutrients!

The Random NPC

He chose to confront the reckless pace of the vampires with precision and control, using and deception and positioning to counter their advantage in speed and numbers. -> delete 'and' after using

Kaelan Spears

Who are these other people Dawn brought, I wonder? Other golds from Earth? Mercenaries?

Razor Frost

Yay vamp sandwich for Colin! Lets gooo!

Stephanie Washburn

Yeah it'd be nice to see how more of his abilities are doing but there's time for that.

Ocellus

Well not a fan of all the POV switches this chapter. Also a let down to not get the convo reveal of who Jason is to the parents.

Ruari Yeen

Being an all-consuming apocalypse beast with only one mouth would just be poor character growth, I feel

Mr IHHI

Was hoping for more incredulity. Also, just remembered from last time, Jason mentioned diamond tankers in the afterlife — I was under the strong impression that diamond rankers were not meant to die, or at least not die permanently. Do disincorporated diamonds take sojourns in hell? Will we get to meet that messenger prat who Jason ate out ?

Harper

Any you recommend?

Dalth

Heavily implied to be Jakar’s Raiders pirate group; the one set up by the World Phoenix cult to intercept Jason as he returned to Earth, who he then beat the stuffing out of the rebellious crew but kept (most) alive while the captain surrendered; possibly went back to Jakar, a diamond rank astral pirate, with… a decent relationship proposal from Shade/Jason to come get him wherever Umber sends them? Because Jakar is decidedly neutral, not antagonized, and will be owed a favor from Jason - while also being extra good at astral travel. (Earth/Palli were supposed to be hidden by WP and they still found it) So Jakar actually has even odds to finding Jason? That’d be my guess. Jakar owes him for the return of the ship and (most) of the crew, can pay that debt by ferrying the team to Jason, or picking Jason up, either way earn Jakar a favor from a GAB and system admin. And since Jakar is a pirate, that could literally save him, while also connecting him to both Jason and Dawn. Wins all around for Jakar.

Dalth

Or Jakar, the diamond ranked pirate captain. He found both Earth and Palli when it was restricted by the World Phoenix, so Jason might have sent back Jakar’s crew to find him from wherever he is being sent by Umber. Or the ferry over Team Biscuit at diamond rank. It’d be exceptionally good business for Jakar either way. He connects with Dawn and Jason, gets favors, and got his ship back from Earth. Or it could be part of the Asano clan with their own astral ship. It’s even odds, but I’d bet on Jakar, or his allies would have known and thus during the stopover on Pallimustus, Knowledge would have known.

Dalth

“Sounds like something he would absolutely do, yeah. You two better not get half the cosmos killed, or We Will Be Having A Talk.”

Dalth

Honestly? I hope the vampire Thadwick actually just talks to Jason, and they end up not fighting. It’d make the most sense. Every time Vampwick shows up, his entire thing is that he is not Thadwick; he starts out by visiting Thadwick’s mom, and actually asking for help, because Vampwick sees the memories, but they aren’t choices he would have made.

ExistentialBane

From my understanding, Umber taught Thadwick how to turn the standard vamps into energy vamps and none of them are standard any longer.

ExistentialBane

Yeah, but even by most people's expectation of a friend, it could not possibly be a bad thing to have an all powerful being as one. Even if all it got their empire was access to more System features it would be worth it to train up a handful of nobodies

ExistentialBane

I feel that just removing the 'and' altogether would be better

Chris Layman

"Great astral beings don't have friends" my dude, you're talking to a bunch of them

Kristy Riedel

Are you trying to suggest that Collin may not really be a good boy? That would mean we have to remove you from the cult of the good boy.

Kristy Riedel

I know! He keeps stretching it out like he wants to fill a whole book or something.

Kristy Riedel

They can be killed, with the right powers and preparation. If you just kill them without that they come back. And Mar Go Shot already came back to life and convinced the diamond rankers not to participate in the attack on Jason in Boko.

Chris Layman

It's interesting, but they're surrounded by pristine souls freshly cleansed of undeath

Hayden Leech

Dead souls. They don’t have life force to drain. It’s why Colin is so bothered by this place. No life. The only living things are Jason, his familiars and the vamps

mortis3338

Not as much fun when the rabbit has the gun...or in this case lamprey teeth

Steve Parks

Colin’s going to be eating vampires in job lots! Thanks Shirt, your story crafting is incredible!

Ligeia

No no, Colin is ALWAYS a good boÿ! I'm just amused at how everyone who says anything about him includes the fact that he's a good boy. Because he is! I approve of Shirt's job of programming us all to join Jason's point of view -- it's not the usual attitude towards an apocalypse monster!

Ligeia

The way Jason is fighting the energy vampires shows yet again how much he learned during his years fighting all the great astral beings while repairing the Cosmic Throne. Fighting all day every day for years really prepared him to demolish the energy vampires. I don't think Umber has factored that into his plan to torment Jason (and Shade), so Colin should be eating well while they're trapped in the corrupted realm!

Matthias

Tyftc! Ngl though, this style of narration chopped up like cabbage is starting to get to me... Just when something is happening and we're getting into the action, we're cut off and taken somewhere else. I really hope that's not how the final book will look like 😕

Matthias

Now, how does Jason know about the energy vampires? Did Umber tell him about them off-screen (bcs not in what we got to see)? If so, why would he? And how does Jason know about Thadwick and that it was his sword's replicas that both the assailant in Boko and the vamps in here had? We haven't read anything about him knowing it's Thadwick, have we Seems a bit of a plot hole hole And I doubt it would be so obvious that he'd remember instantly after 30+ years and what happened to him that it was Thadwick's ghoul left behind in the astral space, etc

Ryan Black

I love this book so much. Each and every chapter is fire. As a DM who has brought all of your stories into my game, I live for this. In our game, we are all astral kings and friends with Jason and team biscuit. The idea of greater astral beings helped my game so much (we are level 25-29...7 year campaign, 4 days a week) gods control a planet, greater astral beings control the cosmere. You have halped our game go beyond level 20 is so many ways. It's why I've never stopped giving you silver rank money even when nothing came out. I love you bro, stay safe and healthy, we all love you

Kismet

The Berts are cousins, I think. Heard they like a slower lifestyle. 😉🙃

Kismet

Aaahhh, reminds me of the good old days. I hope Jason, or one of them is recording this for posterity. Imagine the sales of copies of that crystal.

Adrian

😅🤞

Kristy Riedel

Essence users have excellent memories, and we know he remembered the status of Thadwick at silver rank so there is no reason to forget at gold or diamond. I think Shirt is hiding a lot of these specifics in the conversations Jason had with Raythe and Dawn about hiding things from Knowledge and not breaking time.

Ruari Yeen

I really, really hope Farrah also gets the Diamond training offer. But imagine being the folks Jason met at the start of his career, now getting a jump to diamond through a training program offered by people on a city capable of housing your entire world lol

Citiy3

I it just that the empire uses a different title than interstus or why do we think it is now called first daughter instead of the first sister of the world phoenix Wich has been the used title for the prime vessel of tWP in all the earlier books?

Ruari Yeen

Yeah I think part of Umber's issue is that he lets his antipathy poison his planning. He *needs* to prove the Reaper is greater than Jason, so he can't factor in that Jason already spent decades fighting the Reaper to a standstill (and eventual victory)

Blake Brower

I'm starting to think that the best ending to this series would be for Jason to invent, or otherwise acquire, the ability to "kill" great astral beings along with the ability to kill gods, like Knowledge. He should then kill off the great astral beings who get out of line and incorporate their authority into the System, allowing the system to govern that authority unbiased. Then, everything would finally be set right in the astral multiverse...

CJ T

The Berts are 100% brothers not cousins. Book 1 page 223 ““That was my brother, Bertram, sir. I’m Albert, but feel free to call me Bert.”” Makes it really convenient when that’s where I’m at reading the hardcover

ABTelford

Gotta confess: I skipped ahead then jumped back si I could read all the Team sections in a row, uninterrupted, then went back and read the Jason sections all together. It’s honestly broken up too much right now and not for a good reason that I can discern. Some people may like it but I find it very annoying unless it serves a purpose. I do love the strategic way Jason used Colin though. I was grinning big when he got them at the end.

ABTelford

I can see it. Dawn looked at Rayeth in silence for several seconds, eyes narrowed. When she spoke her voice was tight with suppressed emotion “for someone so old and supposedly wise, you seriously F-ed up. You betrayed a trust, and Jason will not forget that. Even if he forgives you, he will never let it go.”

KollegvomMirgan

I'd like that too, but Jason probably needs the fighting to progress to diamond too

Dalth

Jamis Fran Muskar, the leader of the astral kings council, came and asked him about the means to purge vampires of the residual effects of magic in sunlight. In like chapter 997. So he probably had a good bet about there being some vampires somewhere. Jamis also inquired about Carlos Quildios. Carlos already admitted to Jason that he studied a weapon to kill Messengers, after Jason’s bed ridden phase in Storm Kingdom, and blowing up Boko. That’s just what I can remember, what with it being the gag of Jason asking Carlos if he remembers that he is a priest of Healer, due to Carlos having vivisected tons of vampires, and asking Jason to let him study how to kill Gestalt beings. So, probably not knowing it’s Thadwick in specific, but Jason has some general ideas.

Dalth

There’s also the fact that they can’t even purge the afflictions themselves. Doubt many vampires have holy healing methods, plus at least one of those afflictions is that any time any affliction gets purged, it deals transcendent damage. Jason killed a couple gold rank pirates that way, they were found in the med bay.

MatthewM

It's the same relationship from different perspectives. To each other within the cults especially the world phoenix everyone is a child of the world phoenix therefore they refer to the prime vessel as first sister/brother. To those outside of the cults but hold respect for them they may refer to followers with gendered offspring position titles like first daughter/son

R.B. Laser

Hehe. Team Colin for the Win! There are hungrier things then Energy Vampires. :-) He's a good boy!

Marleen

I am waiting for Shade to meet with Thadwick. The soul he ate was his last summoner right?

Dglearn

Betting the Reaper would request that Jason keep them from public view.

Chuck Haeberle

They're really one person pretending to be eight according to a very reliable source

JW Saxby

🤣 All the “Good Boy” comments make this seem like a Goth Fan convention or something lmfao 😂 Tyftc 🍻

Neverborn

I dont know any where the system is a complete ally, but i can think of a few where the system is at lease a kind of character in the story and sometimes more helpful to the MC than most people in the world think is possible. Level one God. https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/88478/level-one-god and Dungeon Crawler Carl. Both these come to mind and are very good.

Gh0st-Hunt3r

I'm going to have to stop reading chapters if they come out cuz I really hate Cliffhangers with a passion so I'm just going to wait until the rest of the book is out to read the rest of the chapters I can't do it the anticipation is just too much

granndfunk

I know he isn't completely powerless, but power loss arcs are super lame. Hope this is over soon. Do we really need to see this? Can't we time skip?

Aizen Weeks

They have to have one tailor. Cosmic Requirement

Diego Rossi

Possible edit: using [and] deception and positioning to counter their advantage in speed and numbers. -> using deception and positioning

CritHappens

Do we know who is here form earth for training? Did I miss something.

Britain Parrish

I think that ability is Gordon getting to diamond rank.
