Dawn walked into the office of the diamond-rank trainer, August. It was a simple room, although the dark wood was an extravagance in a city located on a sun. August was reading a report from a holographic projector when Dawn arrived, and he stood up from behind his desk. She casually waved him back down.

“Welcome back, Your Highness,” he said before sitting back behind the desk. She took one of the seats opposite.

“It’s been a year,” she said without preamble. “How are they coming along?”

“You’re telling me that you haven’t been watching closely?”

“I’ve been making preparations at Interstice. We’re not too far from the new great astral being making his presence known.”

“His? It’s another elevated mortal?”

“Yes.”

“And it went so well last time with the Builder.”

Dawn smiled but didn’t let herself be dragged off topic.

“How goes the training?” she asked again.

“It’s been interesting. Normally, I’m given the best the Imperium has to offer, to draw out every measure of potential they have. The recruits who make it into this program are always exceptional, but rarely surprising. Wexler and Remore have been easy because they fit that mould perfectly. I’d recruit them to the Imperium, if I thought you’d let me. With the others, drawing out their potential is proving more complicated, but that isn’t a bad thing.”

“How so?”

“It’s forced me to examine how the program operates. To adjust our goals and methodologies. I have been focused for centuries on training the very best. Those who are comprehensively impressive in every metric, even before I get my hands on them. Those who are outstanding in some areas while having shortfalls in others do not normally make it here.”

“But we do train them. The Imperial forces aren’t just nine people you’ve taught personally.”

He gave her a flat stare.

“Yes, the Imperium as a whole trains more than just the most exceptional, plucked out of trillions. But our most elite training programs, as overseen by me, do not.”

“So, you finally realise there are more than those nine people?” Dawn teased.

“I’m not sure I like what your time away from the Imperium has done to you, Princess. My point, Your Highness, is that instructing your guests has shown me that I may have overlooked people who belong in our most elite training programs. Whose accomplishments are only possible because of the imperfections that led me to reject them. We’ve been kicking them down to lower-tier training programs, and I believe that, in some instances, that is a mistake. I’ve already started expanding our recruitment criteria for the elite level programs to be more diverse.”

“You’re not concerned about diluting our top-level talent?”

“There will be problems in the short term, of course, but I’ve realised that we’ve become narrow-minded. In weeding out every recruit with any flaw or weaknesses, we’ve missed out on bring some astonishing talents to their full potential, and that is the Imperium’s loss. If nothing else, the attempts to recruit them have demonstrated that we’ve been overlooking something.”

“Recruitment?”

“The Ordis Academia has been persistent in trying to lure away Standish and Callahan, and I’m not entirely sure we should keep stopping them. By all accounts, their accomplishments relative to the backwater they were raised in are exceptional. Imagine if they had Imperial educations. And I know that Anson Cazus has been sniffing around Estella Warnock. Warnock will never be a quality combatant, which is the focus of our training here, but espionage training? I’d like to keep Callahan and Standish, but supplementing their training could be of benefit. As for Warnock, if Cazus sees potential I do not, that may be a better pathway for her. All of this, of course, is up to you. You brought them in and it’s your decision.”

“It’s their decision, August.”

“This is the Imperium and you are its immortal princess.”

“And these people defy kings, gods, great astral beings. I brought them here so they’re better equipped to do just that. They choose their own way, August. It’s what defines them.”

“I cannot teach them how to fight gods. I couldn’t teach the best of the Imperium to do that. You can take the greatest talents and give them the greatest training, but you can’t give them the will to face the creator of universes, or death itself.”

“I know. That’s why these are the people I’ve brought you. They may not have the greatest talent, but they do have the will. And you, yourself, have said that you’ve learned the virtues of the imperfect. You said Remore and Wexler meet your standards, but what of the others? Who stands out?”

“Humphrey Geller and Neil Davone have surprised me. While each have some oddities in their power sets, they’re both quite archetypal in their roles.”

“And that’s a problem?”

“The very best carve their own path. Remore and Wexler have less conventional power sets that let them draw out their unique strengths to the full. Geller and Davone are right down the line, walking well-trodden paths. Those roads are well-trodden for a reason, but to be truly exceptional requires people who are the exception. I initially believed that the commonality of their power sets would limit their ability to express their individual talents, but the limits proved to be in my way of thinking.”

“Oh?”

“Again, it comes down to overlooking those whose potential is more uneven. In isolation, my initial assessment of Geller and Davone was accurate. It’s only when you place them alongside the people we’ve been passing over that their true value is demonstrated.”

“How so?”

“Take Geller, as an example. We train our people to be versatile and adaptable to any group. Geller has taken the opposite path, going all-in on his team, and his team specifically. He’s a brawler, which means hitting faster and harder than the next person, but for half as long. Geller has built his combat style around leveraging the aptitudes of his team members to surpass his limitations. He hits even harder, even faster, and he just doesn’t stop. Instead of being reliable in critical moments, he’s an unstoppable force, never letting up the pressure. By relying on his team, he becomes the rock they rely on in turn.”

“And Davone?”

“Similar to Humphrey, although less flashy. Davone is a classic protective healer, the kind that goes overlooked because their efficiency, timing and battlefield awareness can easily go unnoticed. Davone isn’t some wild talent, but his reliability and consistency are critical in a team whose members have the strengths of their weaknesses. He makes the unreliable reliable, and the inconsistent consistent. Between him and Geller, they lay a solid foundation for a team very different to the kind we train here. They take what shouldn’t work and make it thrive.”

“Are you suggesting we change how we train our most elite forces in response to a ragtag group from some nothing planet?”

“Hardly anything that drastic, Princess. Much of what has been a revelation to me is well known to the instructors working in the lower-tier programs. The problem is me. I’ve been chasing perfection so long that I forgot that it’s the imperfect who produce the real surprises. I’m simply going to start incorporating methods and recruits that have previously been kept out of our highest-tier programs. The bulk of our elites will be as they have always been, but a few unconventional groups given our highest level of training could become valuable assets. Unconventional solutions to unconventional problems.”

“A benefit to the Imperium.”

“Indeed. Such groups must be made up of those who are still exceptional, however, albeit in quite specific ways. To be honest, the bulk of the people you brought to me do not belong here.”

“All I ask is that you do what you can. Tell me about them.”

“They’re interesting. Hard workers, but mostly unremarkable. It’s clear they come from a world where reaching diamond-rank is an exceptional rarity. They’ve laid none of the groundwork because  they don’t know how. Team Biscuit are clearly an exception to this, which I assume is your doing?”

“Not just mine, but yes.”

“I’ll get the gold-rankers to diamond, but expect them to rapidly stagnate thereafter. I’m not saying they can’t get stronger, but it will be slow going. Training people like that is beyond the scope of what we can offer here.”

“And the three who were already diamond?”

“Rimaros and Volaire have already drawn out the bulk of their potential. We’ve done what we can with their more obvious deficits, but the truth is that they will not grow stronger any time soon. To be frank, Princess, they would offer more value in your direct service than looking for strength when there’s no more to be found.”

“I will speak with them. What of the third diamond-ranker?”

“Allayeth has been something of a pleasant surprise. Somewhere along the line, she’s convinced herself that she wasn’t remarkable. All of your recruits need time with our therapist healers, but she needs it more than any of them, except perhaps Callahan. Once she stops becoming her own barrier, I believe that Allayeth will flourish. To what degree, I could not tell you, but there is definitely value in keeping her here in this program for now.”

“How long are we talking before the golds rank-up?”

“You should know that’s a question with no good answer, Princess. We each have our own pathway, and while we can be hustled along, we ultimately move at our own pace. Team Biscuit will be the first, obviously, but we’ll get them all there in the end.”

***

Dawn was having a quiet and casual morning tea with the Pallimustus diamond-rankers. Quiet and casual, to the annoyance of the Imperial princess, meant only six butlers on hand to meet their every need. She had been questioning her guests on how and why they had come to be here. She had encountered all three during her time on Pallimustus, when she was warning them of the Builder’s invasion, but her interactions with them had been mostly brief.

Only Soramir Rimaros had spent any real time with Dawn, and his story was known to her. He was the only one to have left Pallimustus on his own steam, giving him a cosmic perspective many on his world lacked. He’d recognised what Dawn’s involvement with his planet and her focus on Jason had portended. He’d been preparing to do what he could ever since.

Where Soramir was one of the most powerful and respected of Pallimustus’ diamond-rankers, Allayeth was just the opposite.

“In the eyes of most,” Allayeth explained, “I wasn’t much more than a powerful gold-ranker. I kept many of my mortal ties and didn’t participate in the oh-so-secret diamond-rank collective.”

Soramir hid a laugh behind his teacup.

“It’s not like they were beating down my door, either,” she continued. “I’d positioned myself as guardian of Yaresh, a city-state most people hadn’t even heard of. It was hardly the Storm Kingdom or the Mirror Kingdom.”

She gestured at Soramir and Victor, the men who had established those nations.

“Why did you both put ‘kingdom’ in the name, by the way?” she asked. “Did you think people wouldn’t know?”

It was Dawn’s turn to smother a laugh at the awkward expressions of the two dynastic founders.

“The point is,” Allayeth continued, “that I wasn’t surprised that no one told me about the anti-god insurrection they all planned.”

“That is not how I would categorise it,” Victor said.

“You’re right,” Allayeth said. “You’re hardly standing up to the gods when your first act is capitulating to one of them.”

Victor opened his mouth to defend himself, but the stopped and nodded.

“We had the best of intentions,” he said. “The gods had been going off the rails for a long time, but it was the revelation about Disguise taking over Purity’s role for centuries that finally moved us to act. The gods had to have known, yet they hid it from their own followers. We decided to do something, but there were limits. We can’t fight gods directly, only impede the activities of their followers. And some gods offered unique challenges due to their areas of influence.”

“Knowledge being at the top of that list,” Soramir said.

“Precisely,” Victor confirmed. “As a monarch, I had responsibilities. If I extended beyond my means to protect my kingdom, I would have failed them as a king. That was made very clear when we’d barely started discussions and one of Knowledge’s diamond-rankers approached us. Every plan we had, she knew the moment it was conceived. Any step we took, she would know how to counter. When she wanted to retaliate, she would know exactly how to hurt us.”

“I understand that responsibility,” Soramir said. “It’s why I stepped away from the Storm Kingdom. My people did not deserve and could not handle the repercussions of diamond-rank conflict.”

“Knowledge could shut down our plans as fast as we could make them,” Victor continued. “But she made us an offer. She would keep our plans hidden from the other gods, so long as we held off until her own preparations were done. We had doubts, of course. We didn’t know what she was scheming, at least at first. She told us enough to be certain that her plans were targeted outside of Pallimustus, so we went along. Once we realised she was invading another world, we discussed the ramifications of that. In the end, we held the line. Confronting our own gods was already daunting; we didn’t have the resources or ability to try and save another world entirely.”

“Yet, here you are,” Allayeth pointed out. Victor looked at her for a long moment, then gave a sombre nod.

“I’ve had many children over the centuries,” he said. “They are each special in their own way. As much as I’ve seen, they always find ways to surprise me. The prerogative of the young, I suppose. My first instinct was to be angry at Asano for not bringing my son home to me. It didn’t take me long to realise that Valdis would have chosen to stay on Earth. To stand against the god that I would not. When you came to my door, Soramir, I took the chance to seize a little of my son’s boldness. I left my throne and title as Mirror King to another of my sons, Lucian. It now falls to him to keep the kingdom clear of the battles between gods and diamond-rankers. And of my actions.”

“You can’t believe it’s that simple,” Allayeth said.

“Of course not, but it was as much as I could do. Now, I’m not even sure what I accomplished, if anything. I’ve been in this strange place while my son is fighting on a planet I’m apparently not even allowed to visit.”

“That ends soon,” Dawn said. “I’ve been making preparations of my own, but I could use some aid. I won’t draw on the resources of the Cult of World-Phoenix.”

“Why not?” Soramir asked. “You’re a hierophant of the cult. They’d do anything for you.”

“Yes, they would, but that wouldn’t be appropriate.”

“Why not?”

“Because I’m laying the groundwork for the Cult of the System. Are you willing to help me?”

Jason having a cult? I hope they offer biscuits to everyone

Bingus McCready

Shirt you gotta stop dropping bombs of this magnitude right before a months-long break. My poor heart can’t take it. Even so, I hope your break is restful and fun. We’ll be eagerly awaiting you when you return. TFTC!

Morloc13

Hehe Jason is so going to be pissed when he learns of the System Cult

AC Lee

*waits for Cult of the System signups* Yes please and thank.

Dave

Cult of the System incoming

Ben Maes

This is gonna be a long two months

Sean Graham

Cult of the System, shit yeah. I can now put aside my collander and status as a pastafarian and announce my conversion to the Cult of the System. What should be our religious accouterments? Biscuits? Biscuits.

AC Lee

Welcome to the System. We have biscuits.

KevB

Of course I sign up right before break. TFTC though

Joanna

Sandwiches!

Psykohamster

This is a really good ending point. We have something to look forward to, but aren’t left with a torturous cliffhanger.

Beauxe

Its gonna be sandwiches

NicN

I love that last bombshell, though I don't know if Jason will be happy having a religious organisation under him

Rick

Sorry I am for Cult of the Hegemon.

Ligeia

And biscuits. There have to be biscuits!

Timothy

He already didn't like hearing prayers. Can only imagine how much more this is going to upset him, especially with Dawn starting it, knowing before hand that she would need to do it.

Jeff

Cult of the system? Jason is going to hate that title isn't he?

Citiy3

Tyftc Is the Cult of the system just one big Linux joke. ( Apple or windows would also work, pick your poison). Also Dawn needs to workshop the name I mean it is accurate but it does not really scream Jason yet, Cult of the Hegemon, Cult of the Nexus, Cult of cooking, or even the Cult of Air Wolf would be quite fun. while all are less accurate they have a more personal touch.

Gotrek65

Oooh boy new great astral being Jason Asano so excited.

Jacob

Is this stop chapter fore the next month or 2?

Ruben

Finally something for those displaced priests to do. I really think Jason messed up by not taking advantage of what they had to offer.

Dragon Slayer

I need a shirt that says part of the cult of the system rn 😂😂😂😂

lockx

Oooh, now there's an idea. A shirt would be fantastic!

Mark Morrison

With all his Voices getting sub-Cults.

m meh

Jason is going to flip out when he hears he has a cult :D

Christian Sullivan

The uninform will just be the vast cosmic power T shirt. XD

Ligeia

Yes, till September. [::sob::]

Mark Morrison

"Welcome to the Cult of the System. As a new member you are entitled to one (1) medium sized baked good, redeemable at the following locations. Please Like and Follow for further free gifts !" Stash then gets told off by Jason sending out spam offers for his various bakeries.

Jim Erwin

Love it 💕 thanks Shirt! Have a great tour!

Ligeia

Tftc, Shirt, safe travels, and have fun on your upcoming adventures. And I'm glad Dawn is starting the Cult of the System instead of the Order of the System, which is a much more troublesome type of organization!

Feu et Glace

Yeah I just said that three times laughing

Arakrin

Thanks for the chapter and enjoy your break you evil incarnate you. Also, Jason is gonna be PISSED when he gets a cult. He’s already uncomfortable with people praying to him, to have a proper GAB cult? Damn

Arakrin

On the other hand, he can be his own Prime Vessel, which is neat for him and his followers

Kile

Jason: [sneezes]

Brave Badger

I can’t wait until Nick Asano starts kicking ass with Nigel Thornberry, Clive’s new wife and Rufus’ parents

Frederic Vincent

Nah it has to be amphoras! Amphorae? Amphoraes?

Justin Crisler

I would not describe the great astral cults as religious in the way we normally apply it.

ReadingObsessed

Ohhh yes! Come to the cult meetings, we have lemonade

Zack

Jason is gonna be so mad at Dawn for making his cult. Especially when she picks the wrong sandwich as the best sandwich.

lilcapt

Absolutely Livid.

Zachary Ross

So my big take aways, it's been a year. Jason has been on death's training ground afterlife universe sized planet, and team biscuit is a team of excellence with Rufus Remore and Sofie Wexler leading the pack of the soon to be diamond rank powerhouses. Clive and Belinda are going to be joining the order of the celestial book, because they are bloody smart, Humphrey and Neil have been a pleasant surprise to the Trainer and let's face it they are both quietly amazing. Dawn has spent a year at the universe city of astral beings, preparing for Jason to have his own place, and the cult of the system, this is going to be an issue for Jason because he really doesn't want it. He before his prime avatar was severed from his actual self he heard the prayers of those who prayed to him. That wasn't a happy or healthy thing for Jason.

Phat32

Amphorae filled with Lemonade

Dalth

Did anyone else notice the ONE YEAR TIME SKIP just randomly tossed in there for fun? I mean, damn. What has Jason been up to this entire time? I get diamond rank takes ages to get to, and Team Biscuit needs the time, but I can just see Jason quietly fuming as he gets attacked by energy vampires for the 9,999 time. And what about his new cosmic child friendly ex vampire?

Scott Faulkner

Rule 1 of the cult of the system: Be able to recite plots of all episodes of Airwolf.

Moonray

I was actually kinda happy it was ONLY a year!

Scott Faulkner

Rule 2: Be able to explain which is the correct Night Rider and Voltron.

Phat32

Make these ranks within the cult

Scott Faulkner

Rule 3: Ensure all sandwiches have fresh bread and real mayonnaise.

Phat32

I love the idea of the Cult of the System, I wonder how Jason will react to the idea. The cults are official extensions of the GAB themselves and channel their power. Jason would be the only one to rock up to each meeting and know the mortal and immortal participants

Morgan godkin

So. Who's shipping HWFWM Cult of the System merch? Either full zip hoodie, or graphic tee please. Shirt if you want to bring one to Vancouver, that would definitely push me over the edge to get on a ferry to come see you in Van.

Adam Yates

I think Clive will be the first to argue that "veneration" isnt worship. Perhaps that will bring Jason some peace of mind

Bryan Jackson

Yeah.... I don't see Jason being ok with a Cult of the System existing

Ruari Yeen

He's gonna be so upset people are choosing to worship him even more, lol

Shup Idot

I doubt it matters, He's a great astral being, and there's going to be an organization behind him. That organization, probably will provide an essential component to truly give him the ability to compete with great astral beings.

Ken Sevier

Yes yes yes the cult of the system !!

Qrystof

Can we have it as something more casual? Like a BBQ group.

Shaggy Werth

I can totally imagine Stash figuring out the algorithms for how pr0n ads show up everywhere, and using them as templates for his interdimensional confectionary empire. "Massive tarts near you! Click here!" "Multiple bakers in your area looking to give you a good time!"

Mr IHHI

Board shorts and floral shirts as mandatory cult garb, as well as ritual BBQ’s. Cultists are expected to have a thorough grasp of Earth pop cultures and reference it no less than once every third sentence

Ken Lukasewicz

Couldn't be Windows, you'd need to constantly reboot it. (and now I will casually stroll away)

Kristy Riedel

He won't love it, but he would absolutely hate to have a religion instead.

Zack Leach

Jason should have watched himself when he said, "welcome to the church of airwolf."

joseph peltier

I really hope Jason adds a bunch of Knight Rider references to his holy book. 😂

Malus Aran

And pants. There must always be pants.

Michael Alpert-Appell

Holy fucking shit The first half of this chapter I was reminded how some of my absolute favorite of Shirt's work are when his characters are confronted with their own biases, and begin working to overcome it. It's hard to put into words, but it's a "worlds colliding and everyone learns from everyone else" kind of vibe. And then Dawn dropped the Cult of the motherfucking System. I literally gaped at the screen, going "What? Whaaaaaat? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat??" while making strangling noises.

Michael Alpert-Appell

Isn't that what basically happens every time Jason's prime avatar gets killed? His big cosmic death bird form is basically a temporary BSOD.

Crystal Donak

Who else wants the shirt..(hehe) Founding Member of the Cult of the System ?

curtis gatley

Not "Cult of the Cosmic Hegemon?"

Raves

It's not a cult, it's a social group with a focus on good food, good people, and thumbing your nose at authority.

Geoff

Should've been "Cult of the Hegemon"

Reaperess

Jason is going to hate having a Cult and an Order.

Joshua Batts

Seriously, this chapter had some big ones. August casually dropping the "obviously everyone's reaching diamond rank." That, and "Callahan needs serious therapy." I hope that one doesn't get swept under the rug later on.

Brad Gammey

Wait.. is this a cult? Am I a cultist now? Do we have a handshake? Or maybe a specific badge to wear?

usa1ph

See here I was offended that my boy Niel wasn't listed as an exceptional talent. Just had to hit us with the bait huh shirt

Pierce

Man, Dawn really coming through… maybe she is Jason’s end game after all?

Shivrah

Honestly I think “The Systemic Order” sounds like a better organizational name. Less culty and more organizational structure designed to make a multiversal Adventure Society.

ABTelford

I honestly gasped as I read the last two lines. Full on gasped! 😲😃 And you…won’t be posting until September…😮‍💨. I’ll survive. Lol! Thanks for a delightful cliffhanger to agonize over for the next two months! lol!

Scott F

Club sandwich?

ABTelford

I could totally see team biscuit having a long argument about the name - I’d love to hear it! Lol!

ABTelford

That would actually make it much more palatable to Jason. I bet he’d reject the cult of the system but he could be talked around to leading a cosmic adventure society. Heck yes!

Stephanie Washburn

I think the best thing about that Cult is that it's going to have to offer the kind of things people need from a Cult of the System. Which means someone other than Jason is going to have to design and run it. Because I think we can all agree that Jason is not the one to run a community organization with mild to moderate religious elements. He is good for snacks though. Sandwiches served with amphoras of lemonade and biscuits (cookies) for dessert.

Anthony Tarter

I’m stoked to find out how fast Sophie will be in diamond rank or our man hump the whole crew making a diamond rank appearance the adventure society will be like wtf all of them seriously cannot wait but I’m still waiting to find out what Jason did right before they left earth and the comical Jason what did you do ? Comment I bet it’s juicy

Razor Frost

Put me down for one double bacon Gouda cult sign up please!

Razor Frost

Please tell me they get Arash to do a juice stand in the cult!

Aaron S

I like the way razor frost thinks, but honestly, there is really only one name for his cult that makes sense. "The Hedgemony"

Aaron S

No cult. Just "The Hedgemony"

Tim

Pft shes like 15+ years behind. The cult of jason has been around since Iron lol

Idan tal

“The cult of the System”… Jason is going to hate this sooooooo much. Except it as necessary? Maybe, like it? Hell no ! I’m betting the first law will be- “always wear reinforced pants!” And the second “food is good, cooking classes are mandatory”.

phillip page

Shouldn't it be the cult of the hegemon not the cult of the system? After all the other cults are named after the GAB and not what they oversee. Like it's not the cult of death or the cult of dimensional integrity, it's the cult of the reaper and the cult of the world phoenix. Jason's GAB form is called the hegemon whenever he uses that power and he lords over the system.

Alejandro Piña

With cliffs like this I’m gonna start calling him Zogarth 2

Michael Romo

They are going to tease him endlessly

Katy Ferguson

I think the Hegemon is the name of his divine (or AK?) aspect, but the System is his GAB aspect. And the Cults are all for GABs

DreadHawk666 Aron

Thank you for the chapter 😁! Jason is not going to like this😂 he has already told people he doesn't want a cult 😂

Frog

Yknow between jason hearing the prayers on the wind and the various characters known to venerate him, and of course the cosmic breadth of the system, I’d been wondering how much of a cult had formed already. Especially after blessing the ex-energy-vampire confirmed his full embodiment of the GAB role. Jason certainly wont like the cult as a baseline, but the Reaper was described as having a similar attitude towards its own cult. If that dynamic can be established, and the sensible, “serve but remain your own self and take accountability for your own actions” approach that Dawn took to her service under the World Phoenix, can be embedded in the groundwork of the cult from the start, it could at least reach a point of being tolerable to Jason I’d imagine.

CipherFTW

What a fuggin cliff man.. ;-;

Frog

No. The other cults worship the GABs, the “Fundamental Mechanisms of the Cosmos” as Raythe put it when describing the nameless. While the Hegemon is a cosmic power, it is the type of cosmic power that an Astral King is. Singular, infinitely powerful in effect, but a standalone entity separate from the cosmos. The System is Jason’s cosmic law, the aspect of his transcendence that has embedded itself as a fundamental mechanism of the cosmos.

Idan tal

Pamphlets! This is the most essential thing for the cult! I hope Dawn didn’t forget to print them.

KollegvomMirgan

What was that kingdom remark at the end about?

Chris Pollan

Victor opened his mouth to defend himself, but the stopped and nodded. = but then stopped and nodded.

SmokeJam

It is interesting how Diamond rank, the once lofty and far away goal, is treated like school graduation in the Imperium. Looking forward to the final arc of this saga! Also, now I get what Dawn was sorry for, not the invasion etc, but building Jason a Cult

Annie Ingram

So maybe, but maybe not. 🤔 With him having g avatars it'll be different than most GABs. He can just send avatars to do stuff he won't have to have people like Dawn if he doesn't want too. It could just be mostly avatars.

Agent P.

The Cult of The System. With an Astral Being who didn't ascend from being mortal but will remain basically mortal forever. Interesting. Also a year already passed? Talk about ignoring your company lol.

Vindrmasuta

I just realized that Jason technically being a GAB means that he could make his own star seeds. There's ramifications to that

Zodiac

Is it just me or did the first part of this chapter feel like a repeat of the same info given in the previous chapter. This chapter definitely rambled in the first half too, lots of saying the same thing but in different ways.

Bombans

With cult of the system I just start hearing Database (the theme song for log horizon) blaring in my head.

Andrew Q Dunckley

Oh shirt! While I may be sad that this is Jason's last tale, I can only say I love your stories and style!

henry essiaw

I literally cackled when i read the "System Cult" i finally caved in and got the patreon because it was taking too long on royal road(worth every penny) and now i'm caught up im starving for more!!!!!

Wilson

Reaching diamonds has to do with making_accepting your place in the Cosmos. Have a feeling accepting theres going to be a cult and that he'll have to do a lot of things via proxy will be a part of becoming diamond.

John Durrett

tyftc. Correction: Victor opened his mouth to defend himself, but the stopped and nodded. Victor opened his mouth to defend himself, but 'then' stopped and nodded.

Charles Dahl

BSOD, the Bird Srceam of Death!

Youkai-sama

Bruh! Thas a helluva cliff to leave us on for 2 frelling months 😆

Youkai-sama

😯 You mad baasterd! 😆

JW Saxby

😄🤯 Wow… crazy good chapter. Annoyed thought that I gotta wait another month arrrgh! 😫 Tyftc 😅🍻

Steve Parks

The cult of fresh baked bread? Lol

Elliott

Time flows differently in different universes/dimensions (except earth and palli). I wonder how much time has past for Jason..

shawn B

It may not have been “healthy” but he needs to come to grips with his nexus status to be diamond. That includes a cult, prayers, etc.

Kalanaere

Cult of the System....ohh Dawn you are going to send Jason into an abdolute tizzy! He barely accepts the role he has now but nod you want to truly evate him . Nice time skip but such a cruel cliffhanger knowing nothing of Jason

Kalanaere

Who do you thumb your nose at when you are the authority

Kalanaere

Oh he is totally going to mske Dawn work for him as punishment for this little cult of hers

Kalanaere

Since Farrah is likely to get roped unto some fancy roll because of her link with Jason she is totally going to veto any pop culture names he comes up with

Kalanaere

All prospective members must bring a demonstration of the best sandwiche

Kalanaere

Very true. Jason is going to have to accept his roles and im not sure that isn't part of the point. Umber is an ass but still loyal to The Reaper. What if this entire thing is method for the GABs to actually help Jason. Phoenix blocks Diamond, Eye sent him Gordon, Legion sent Collin. He found Shade, released Priests of Reaper who perks he owes Jason thus this elaborate training ground he has umber drop hom on. The Builder and Jason have a history but he's still willing to set it aside to help Jason. They all want him to arbitrage as The Hedgemon

Kalanaere

It just dawned on me (no pun intended) that if you consider how in so many stories the system seems ti get mad when it doesn't get its way, seems to hold petty grudges, give page long rants and snark about items and abilities and such. It makes sense that Jason is actually the one controlling everything!

I wonder if Taika and Emi are there training as well. It probably makes more sense for them to have remained on Earth for the fight, though.

So let's here some guesses on who came from Palli like while Jason is fighting Thadwick is Neil flirting with Cassandra?

"The Cult Of The System" ! Let's Unpack this little Chestnut 🌰. So not only is jason a "Great Astral Being" But essentially The GREATEST Astral Being and an Astral King, And An Original ! The System Dictates All the Laws of the cosmos and Jason Could potentially also add a LAW Stopping God's of Planets from Disconnecting from there Birth planets couldn't he? And couldn't he also Create a law that makes God's KILLABLE ? I only ask this because "The System" is supposed to Originally keep the Cosmos in check a govern the immutable laws that bind all things so isn't it atleast possible for him to do something to stop Knowledge ? What do yall think ? Let me know in the comments one love and thankyou Shirt for the chapter 😉

Cambreadth

hhmm is it time to introduce orbital bombardment to planet bound goods???

ThoMiCroN

I guess « He who fights with monsters » will be a passage of Jason’s holy book and one of his titles.

Drahnir .

Erika's statement finally gonna happen... " you joined a cult!"

David Yow

"She did ask him not to think too poorly of her next time they met. Way back in the day. Wouldn't surprise me if she planned this back on Earth."

So I think I realized something. Why does Pali have two moons. And why is one a “mystic” moon and the other a regular moon. When Jason mentioned it with gravity to Clive, and Gabriella came to stop him mention Gravity I think that wasn’t just cause it being a fundamental force. Jason understands enough about it to explain it to Clive. Knowledge likes Clive because he takes knowledge and disseminate it. That’s part of her path. So why was she not want Jason to disseminate the knowledge of gravity fundamentally? It’s a very simple concept to understand (E equals MC squared.) With knowledges duplicitous nature revealed it got me thinking. What if knowledge is a foreign God? Didn’t originate on Pali. Maybe she came from another planet maybe another dimension. But I think the reason she didn’t want Jason to even explain the basic understanding of gravity decline is that Clive would figure out that the gravitational pole of two moons regardless of magic would have some serious effects on a planet. And Clive being Clive would figure out that there’s something fishy with that Mystic moon. The yaresh diamond ranker were concerned about the messenger is being flung to the Mystic moon, but didn’t seem to care that was in the direction of the regular moon. This leads me to believe with a knowledge is power hungriness the fact that knowledge seems to have an edge over every other God on that planet always seem to offer to me the concept of her nature is knowledge which means that she would know whatever other God knows this kind of makes her more powerful innocence to other gods on the planet. Which stands a reason why none of the other gods did anything to stop her from her plans? They want her gone. But sanctioning her would only have her return overtime power finding someone else or someone coming in into her power of knowledge they want knowledge killed not sanctioned. That’s my guess at least. Something is off about that mystic moon.

Anyone else having Jason withdrawals after those cliff hangers on? No? Just me? Okaay I guess I will just have to go reread all 12 published books then through 13 and what of 14 is on here while waiting to actually buy 13 in 2ish months lol

Just realized, back in book 12, Dominion literally told Jason that sooner or later there would be a cult lol I know it was in a specific context but I still can’t help but feel that was great foreshadowing. I could see the old priests going around Palimustus and preaching the ideas of anti slavery and challenging those of power, whether it be Gods or governments.

Does anyone think that the GAB are trying to make Jason be what they want, almost sanctioning the sundered throne, in a similar manor as they did with the builder? But they realized with the builder that giving the most talented and most powerful, yet least mortally experienced (he was an 18 year old diamond ranker), is not the way. Instead, they sought out someone who cares more about mortality and equality than power, therefore learning from their mistakes? lol just a random thought

I wonder if at like transcendent rank if diet Jason‘s purification powers will be able to remove targeted energies. I’m very curious on how he’s going to kill knowledge. I do think it has something to do with the moon the second magical moon. We don’t know a lot about gods as much as they’ve been in the series since the very beginning, compared to great astral beings and astral kings. Jason is a Nexus of all three. Do gods have a soul space do they have their own little universes? Where does their prime avatar reside? I don’t believe that they’re in femoral just powerful energies floating around the planet. Especially when you look at Jason and the restrictions that he has when it comes to his true power versus his avatar. It has been stated that gods are just really powerful people. I think the gods were people who naturally gained power on ply overtime and grew into their roles when they transcendent. We don’t even know that much on sanctioning. Purity sanctioned himself over 500 years ago and still has not reconstituted. There is been no hint sway or anything of anyone taking purity’s spot. I think when you transcend because don’t forget our fiery spider lady Dawn has transcended. And there seems to be a difference between transcending and being a god. I think being a god is when a transcendent binds themselves to a planet somehow. This is why I think the magical moon on Pali has something to do with the gods there. Based on a lot of the inhabited creatures on Pali, I think dragons, Leonids, and scale kin were the natural race of Pali. The magical moon showed up bringing humans and elves. I believe the other race is like the Smulders and the Runik are human and Elfish aberrations. The ones that became guards could’ve been enterprising, cosmic travellers at stumbled upon the builders little experiment. Through becoming transcendent, and then binding themselves to the planet they became gods and couldn’t leave. They were stuck in their roles. Anyways, that’s it’s my my theory of my rambling mind for now.

Where is Nik? Also I understand that knowledge is invading earth and has a military but I’m a bit confused. I don’t understand how/why this is an actual problem for anyone other than Jason. Maybe the people in his two territories too. But if she’s coming to be a god she doesn’t need to kill everyone right? All she needs to do is over power Jason. Everyone is acting like fighting her has to happen when it really doesn’t. There’s no incentive for people to go to war really unless they believe having a god will make their lives worse. It doesn’t seem like it would that much. On top of that the planet would develop its own god naturally so if just don’t understand why they are acting like they actually have to fight her. For Nik. Where is he? Is he left on earth? That wouldn’t make sense because shouldn’t that be mentioned? Especially after he’s done so much talk about being a present father. He wasn’t with team biscuit. It was mentioned that Farrah was the only one to go to his astral realm. It would’ve made total sense for him to be there too. It wouldn’t have made since for him to have been taken to pali and just left Jason as team biscuit. Please Travis come up with a clever and meaningful reason for his absence. He’s my favorite character and I’d really like to see more of him. Especially his abalities and relationship with Jason. I was a bit disappointed with him not being the general or working alongside the general during the last vampire war. His communication powers would’ve been absolutely perfect for that roll as well as giving everyone a more expansive system, coms, looting, inventory, maps etc. He was awesome when they were collecting the earth people before they left Pali. Please utilize him to the fullest for the God of knowledge war.

"Cult of the System" ... Ok? And?

Esther Prenosil

But.. Belinda and Stash want cults too. 🥺

Esther Prenosil

Jason would NOT be on-board with giving them star seeds.

StarkRG

Does Jason get a prime vessel or is he his own? And he's already got a following that he's really been neglecting a lot. Hopefully a cult of him will provide structure for them that he hasn't.

KyoDaDungeon!!

Ah another not so often used trope in system litrpgs put into a whole new way system worshippers gotta say Shirt always with these great twists

Daniel Jurmann

Oh is that because you hate sandwiches HUH?!!

Daniel Jurmann
