you did not misinterpret Serie's surpressed mana is equal to Frieren's total mana. Other than the Goddess who is above all and maybe the Demon King or another guy you haven't fully been introduced to yet (only mentioned), Serie is by far the strongest mage. If they adapt a season 2 then you'll soon find out that Frieren was being honest when she said she is still very beatable.

No, this isn't beef with Frieren. She literally just said that because Frieren is too powerful, too many ppl passed who shouldn't even have passed. Third tests are typically so harsh that most of them would have died. Cold logic. That's all it is. Frieren carried too hard, and getting carried by someone extra powerful does not qualify you as a first class mage.
