Excited to watch PDM!

Gotta get those demon eyes on Matt—both of them.

MrGunn

Well done mate! It is what I get for eating dinner and watching 'The Gentleman' on Netflix instead of staying glued to my feed. ;) :D

MrGunn

Dear PDM: I hope you are well. Thanks for sharing your opinions. I am not sure this rises to the level of an 'Emergency', perhaps 'Breaking News' might be a better descriptor. ;) Personally, I am not interested in another high fantasy RPG, if I want to play super heroes, I will play Villains & Vigilantes. I laud Mercer for wanting to go in a different mechanical direction, however, I don't think it offers a significant enough value to change. As to the MCDM RPG, the world already voted on D&D 4.0, it was not well received. You are absolutely correct, Shadowdark is well done, it offers enough differentiation from D&D, yet remains familiar enough that it is easy to learn and convert to. The similarities have drawn a lot of 3rd party content creators to support it, and makes Shadowdark a viable alternative to D&D. I think that the D100 percentile and D20 based systems are pretty much the standard and deviations from those mechanics will remain a niche due to the difficulties in creating an ecosystem. In closing, yes, having more systems to choose from only improves our hobby in the long run, I hope these games find their niche. Huzzah!, MrGunn PS Where are Mercer's Lazer eyes or Colville's cold dead eyes in the thumbnail?

I can't get the video to play...spinning (and YT works just fine)

Stefan

Great video. Nicely placed math errors, that’ll get you a lot of comments!!! 😄

MrGunn

@Timothy S Wattigny Try cleaning your browser's cache and rebooting your system.

Great video! I found the explanations of Daggerheart and the MCDM RPG to be dizzying. All I need to know for D&D is my base to hit number and the target AC! =)

Jeff Jones

What about Dungeon Coach's DC20 rpg?

Frank Salazar

Alright! Great vid, I liked the Basic Fantasy mention.

Chris Baker

I guessed wrong. I assumed the emergency upload would be Chris Cock's statements and excitement about AI.

Terra Jones

I haven't looked at the title but in answer to the question the title poses, I do not think it will "kill DnD" but honestly I don't think it needs to.

Bruce McBride

Agreed- not a zero-sum situation. Daggerheart can succeed without taking down D&D- there's plenty of room for both!

An excellent video Professor. I enjoyed your summary of both games and much like yourself I enjoy new and innovative ideas in games. They both have their strengths and flaws. Having been following Heath's Geekverse through his design of Fated Edge has given me much to consider aside from the statistical probabilities behind these games. There is some psychology to them as well. The question is how these games make the players feel during the course of the game and what excites them as much as rolling doubles or a critical hit whatever that might entail. As with MCDM and some of the games you mentioned like Cairn, they do pose some interesting ideas about forgoing to-hit rolls. I'm just not sure they can pull off what they claim to. Even though I may not be the biggest supporter of D20 games, I still see the brilliance in Kelsey's Shadow Dark game and the dedication Dungeon Coach is putting into DC20. I will support as many as I can if not for the fact that they are diligently attempting something new and bold. Doesn't matter if I play them as written or not. I like to "borrow" good ideas and they have some really really good ones. Anyway, happy gaming everyone.

Neat discussion. I think that Matt C may find an interesting formula to achieve cinematic+tactical. It can be fast and have some inherent rises falls and beats to combat. DnD grid combat sucks, but you can use a grid and still have fun, if it’s punchy like Forbidden Psalm for Mork Borg. It’s fast!

Professor fails math! Film at 11! So watch the next video!

I personally am old I like the old ways ...dice & failure. No card, and no everyone gets a trophy. I just bought Cepheus and Sword of Cepheus, and Dungeon Fantasy (GURPS) to try on my players.

David Ford

No person or game can kill D&D quicker or better than how Hasbro, and their AI computer overlords, are killing it right now.
