Bagel-Man

Cool to see your thoughts on this Professor!

Ben McInnis

Thanks for another awesome video, PDM! I don't plan on buying any of the new D&D books mainly because I don't see the point in doing so. Like you said, they've not done anything but consolidate all the stiff they've released already and I own that, so why buy it twice.

Martin Thomas

So funny... I also put up a poll today asking this question but I hadn't seen yours yet! Great minds think alike (... and, so do ours!). Mine is pretty close to yours results to far - about 54% say "yes" but a very vocal ~41% is adamant that I should not. We'll see what happens. Thanks for showing this. I've been waffling about getting the new PHB and honestly the only reason I'd pick it up is to review it for the channel but I'm not sure if that's a good enough reason!

Jay

PDM, Whoo Hoo! What a video! Short story long, I couldn’t have stated any of what you said better. I saw the release of the Players Handbook 2024 when it went live. They are clearly catering to the D&D fans who want more rules to codify what their characters can do because they don’t think outside the box. They could just do whatever you want with GM approval. All the options will be difficult to manage and most certainly will slow things down to a crawl. Still, there are a few good ideas I may borrow from. However, if I do purchase this book as a reference to borrow some ideas from, I certainly will NOT be purchasing it on D&D Beyond. I recently purchased Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft both physical book and digital version on D&D Beyond. I was overcharged even though it was clearly on sale, and it does not inform you that the digital version is NOT a PDF and can only be viewed on D&D Beyond while logged in. No way will I do that again. I will from now on buy my books at local game shops or the independent creators I support on Kickstarter. By-the-way, props to Dungeon Coach! DC20 is killing it on Kickstarter! As of today 21 JUN 2024 he has raised $1,647,173 for DC20 and I was happy to add to that!

MrGunn

@Jay You actually paid for content from D&D Beyond, surprising. My thought was that you would have 'scrounged' a copy. ;D

Jay

First time and last time for sure. If I could have found the Ravenloft material elsewhere I would have. Never-the-less, a bitter lesson learned and won't be forgotten.

MrGunn

Dear PDM: Thanks for the review, it just reinforced my current opinion; I am done with Wizbros and D&D, have been since the OGL scandal. There are so many great indy systems available, there is nothing that D&D is offering I want or need. Really appreciated your Bonus Content section, it was spot on. Keep up the great work. Best, MrGunn

MrGunn

@Jay PS. Seems the kiddies are struggling with creativity. They need to learn to: improvise, adapt, and overcome!

Elvis Ramone

Deathbringer keeping it real about healing potions. That's why I heal one hp per night, clean conscious! That tomb is looking good, looking forward to it.

SpeakingBeast

I feel the same way—to me, D&D has been OSE for the past few years, and now, as our group dives into ShadowDark, it will become ShadowDark. I have no interest in purchasing the new ruleset. It's just not for me. It seems like it's trying to appeal (thematically) more to the Critical Role crowd, which, hey, all the power to them!

Scott

"But it's not on my character sheet." or "What can I do" while looking at a character sheet. Heard things like that so many times, especially with new players.

Daniel Defazio

Lol. Thank you. The lol is because the bonus content was so ad-libbed, and I was so exhausted, I do not even remember what I said.

Frederic Schmitt

♥ I am only watching this (the non-patreon part) under protest! :D

Robyn Derme

Nice video. And the bonus content was worth the extra viewing time. But, I'm in the same boat as PDM's friend, mostly. If we're playing a fantasy game, it's D&D, period, end of discussion. If we're playing Cyberpunk, it's Cyberpunk RED. And Sci-Fi is always Battlelords of the 23rd Century. We recently had a discussion about games and styles. The rest of the table insists that they like the heroic, kick-@$$ & take trophies style that is D&D rather than a lower power game like the retro-clones... or as I posed it, they would rather be The Avengers rather than a Band of Brothers. I'm still gonna watch PDM's content, but I'm sure that little of it will effect what happens at our table. :-(

James M Spahn

I truly hope folks enjoy this game. I genuinely do. I think for the right audience this will really hit the sweet spot for them. For me, though? It's just too much damn game. I wanna be able to get a session of play done in 2-3 hours. This looks like its more akin to Pathfinder in its level of complexity. Sure, it's granular, but you know what they say about sand: It's rough, it's coarse, and it gets everywhere. That's what this edition seems to do - just freakin' get everywhere. I've got enough experience I don't need that level of pervasive rules presence.

Scott Mckay

My players are hyped for the new edition I might have to run it soon hopefully I can talk them into running a few homebrew rules (Deathbringer or hardcore mode) They seem to have forgotten why we moved away from 5e in the first place...

Frank Mitchell

A few months ago I polled my D&D group, and 4 (of 6) of us said they're *not* going to switch to D&D 2024. (The other 2 abstained/didn't care.) So I'm hoping I can persuade them to try something OSR-ish once this campaign ends. (Shifting them over to something not d20 based may be a pipe dream.) We'll see how that goes.

Frank Mitchell

Happened a few days ago at our table: "You have the best Deception, so you forge the letter." Not to tell tales out of school, but I think some of our players are horribly mismatched to their characters. The high-CHA Tiefling's player is probably the most awkward guy at actually coming up with lies. The Wizard's player seems uninterested in collecting spells; Fireball is enough. The Druid's player uses his powers to sneak into places as a gecko and conjures hags to do covert ops. (So why didn't he pick Rogue?) My Cleric has the highest Insight and second-highest Persuasion yet in real life I can neither read a room nor sway it. Ah, if only we were playing something like RuneQuest where everyone can do a little bit of everything and gets better at what they practice. Even a mechanic like Deathbringer Dice would let people excel at what they want to excel at, character sheet be damned.

Frank Mitchell

I'm still peeved I paid for the bits of books I needed to assemble characters, yet after the big reorg I can no longer use what I paid for. Should have known better ...

Benjamin Marra

Modern D&D should be called "Menu D&D" since players look at their character sheet like they read from a restaurant menu (as you've said in the past, PDM). All this granularity can be achieved without all these procedures using an FKR style of play, like the XD20 system from XDM. Discuss what is logical within the game world, set a target number, and roll the dice. I would use the weapons mastery concepts from Nü D&D as prompts and ideas to steal (they sound cool) but never use the same rules as written.

MrGunn

@Robyn Derme I hear your frustration, I mean McDonald's is ok once in awhile, but a steady diet will make you sick. It is nice to try different things, I appreciate variety, Italian, Chinese, Indian, French, Thai, Steak, vegetarian etc. If you are the sole DM, it seems like your table is ripe for a: "Now for change of pace!" moment. One or two session one shot of different a game systems as pallet cleansers. Use the ye olde, I am going to run this, please come or don't approach.

MrGunn

@DungeonCraft Yes, I imagine 2330 is pretty late for a guy who usually goes to bed at 2000. LOL

MrGunn

@Frank Mitchell, @Jay, @DungeonCraft You have pretty much nailed the; you will own nothing and like it, issue we are facing. These platforms are like taxation without representation, they make money off you via subscription and ads then they manipulate the system to increase their profits with no input form you and you have no recourse but to accept the new reality or go away. Then these platforms get greedy and try to own your creative work too, just look at the OGL scandal and Adobe's recent moves, outrageous! The hammer maker should have no more ownership over what you make than the nail maker, yet somehow software is different. We seem to own less and less, the worst is the attacks on ownership via right to repair restrictions like John Deere and Apple, and don't get even me started on property taxes :D.

Scott Mckay

I'd suggest suggesting to them a 1 shot of CoC the fact it is a one-off may make them at least try. Then a one-off of the game you want to run.

Tuska

WoTC D&D is so cringe. They have lost their way and the spirit of D&D. I will stick with OSR D&D.

samurguybri

Agree on the weapons mastery thing, but I think I’d just steal DCC’s mechanic for fighters that lets people do what they want, instead of pick off a menu.

samurguybri

I’ve been running PDM’s Eldritch Hack, it’s a nice segue into other RPGs. Very lite, easily hackable and d20 based.

samurguybri

I’ve been a doormat to people too much in my life. Part of my new way of being is to stand up for myself, even in my fun, with my friends. “Here’s what I’m running. Who wants to play?” I need to be happy, too. I like variety. I’ll circle back and play what others want after a few months, but I need to feel creative and have fun.

Anthony Cabrera

I agree with your take on attachment to anything. Attachment leads to fear and as we all know, "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering!” Oh yeah and "Han shot first." Amen. Blessed be. Asi eso!

SJBehindtheScreen

good points. My group sees all the cool innovation and connection with the community coming from all other sources but wotc. What wotc sells as D&D now? Pass.

Jay

Yep! I think likewise yet try to refrain from ranting as such online even though it pisses me off and even worse is 100% true. Well stated @ MrGunn.

Lee Dunning

They offer many options, spells, etc., but in the end most of the players glom onto the same handful of offerings and ignore the rest. It ends up just being a bunch of filler that makes it harder to find the information you want as it's buried in a quagmire of options that have been deemed worthless.

Kristen Solindas

I have been finding it difficult to covert D&D players to my game, as it lacks all the training wheels that so many players have become dependent upon. The idea of not being capable of doing something because it has not been explicitly stated is a product of CRPGs, I believe, due to the limitations of programming. "You get a choice of these X number of options." This restriction is difficult to overcome. While my game is on the crunchy side, it allows for full, open character creation. No classes, levels, lists of feats or spells... But that means the players need to be more creative, less dependent on rules and lists to tell them what they can do. D&D does the opposite, and no list of options, no matter how extensive, can give all the options. They try, and it is still limiting, and can get cumbersome. I don't want to get a master's degree in D&D. I want to play an imaginative game with my friends. I think Hasbro/WotC has lost sight of this.

MrGunn

@Kristen Solindas DB asked if you have tried kidnapping or threatening their friends and loved ones, he says it is a very effective means of getting compliance. LOL,..

Rod Thomson

On my to-do list this week is to box up all my D&D books. I'm still playing, but as I'm sure is the case with everyone here, I'm running my own hybrid that suits me and my players, not a straight, by-the-book 5e which by now has so many spells and moving parts that it has become very difficult to plan challenging and engaging scenarios that cannot be solved with the right spell or feat. I'm sure I'll buy the new player's handbook out of a sense of curiosity and a desire to support the hobby (not like Hasbro needs my money), but I'll likely read it and then willfully ignore it.

TwinDad

"Options" is his buzzword of choice

MelodicMethod

I'm not going to begrudge you making videos on current Dungeons & Dragons...as long as you also pay attention to the other TTRPGs, which it sounds like you will. I'm also cool with non-review content like " Tomb of Horrors". If you do start having real economic problems, give a shout-out. I will give a hard think about upping my pledge level. Why am I not already at a higher pledge? Brother, I can only support so many creators. Cheers! EDIT: and the DM advice, love those videos, too.

Look at what they've done to my boy. Hate WotC, simple as.
