Dicebreaker is dead

Dear DungeonCraft: Looking forward to watching. Regards, MrGunn

Bring it on! Happy to go down in flames with ya! On a serious note, the loss of Dicebreaker is a blow to the community. Linda Codega's early coverage of the OGL was such an important story by itself.

Awww man I was hoping the MegaForce game was real lol

GegaHub

I'd read the Gamer Network was selling of its properties, this is a shame. I genuinely like the people on their YouTube channel too. Maybe that is the future of independent gaming, channels like you, small independent productions with a staff under five.

MrGunn

Dear DungeonCraft: I hope your recovery is going well. Dungeons & Discourse covered this in an update on Friday I think, I was surprised when I did not see you comment immediately, glad to see you are covering this. I agree, media consolidation is a serious problem and has been for sometime. The impacts are myriad, foremost is the loss of freedom of the press and editorial independence as well as media integrity is at risk. Almost worse than government control of media is corporate control of media. When all of your sources of news are owned by one owner or group you lose diversity of opinion and information simply becomes propaganda for corporate interests; looking at you Gannett. Why is media consolidation bad you ask; well, corporations are not democratic and do not care about the interests of the people, you cannot vote to influence them and they only care about their own interests. Private ownership of media is fine if you have enough competition to create diversity. However, when a small number of media outlets are paying Google to promote searches for their view point, people's ability to get access to alternative points of view or better facts or stories about things the corporations don't want you to know is diminished. Corporations then have outsized control over what you see and hear, and you get lazy media outlets simply regurgitating government or corporate press briefings with no independent journalism or examination of the facts. Sadly, I see propaganda produced by the AI Ministry of Gannett News as our dystopian future. Critical thinking has never been a more useful skill. Long live an independent and vigorous fourth estate! Best, MrGunn PS: DB your comment about Little Women went right over my head, I did not get it?

I remember Dicebreaker vaguely to be honest. There are so many voices out there in the aether that I tend to stick to only a few as my time allows (PDM being the primary one). I will check out Rascal, but I'm wondering if the level of production Dicebreaker had was what killed it. It seems like a greater majority of people in the gaming community like to see simplicity in what they view. I could very much be wrong as my own selection of content that I consume is limited. It appears to me that many people prefer to watch creators with a more DIY vibe to them. If I was going to speculate a reason, it might be because they want to feel like they are watching someone that they can relate to as "just like them", i.e. a normal person putting out content rather than a slick studio or a multi-billion dollar company. As I said, I could be completely off the mark, but that is what it seems like from the evidence presented in this video alone. I can't wait to see the Tomb of Horrors video(s) once they are up!

MrGunn

@Bagel-Man Thank you, however, it was pure luck LOL. I was watching a movie on my laptop and noticed an update to my mailbox, and there it was, a new DungeonCraft post on Patreon. So I rushed to get the first post, just like an old time newspaper reporter. You can imagine how thrilled I was when I realized I had beaten the ever speedy Bagel-Man. :D

MrGunn

@Ben McInnis Interesting assessment, you may have something there. There was a poll that showed that Daily Show viewers were better informed than folks who mainly consumed mainstream media. There could be several reasons for this: folks who watch the Daily Show are more sophisticated consumers of media; the Daily Show does a better job of covering news; people prefer to get their news in a comedic fashion and remember it better. I don't know the answer, however, as I stated above critical thinking is a skill that is needed more than ever. I remember the Iraq war when there was a constant drum beat about weapons of mass destruction and that Iraq was supporting nuclear terrorism and Saddam Hussein was a global threat. I believed it, however, none of it turned out to be true. I vowed to do better next time and ask more questions: Who was the source of the story, what is their interest, who benefits and why.

I have been known to put critcrab videos on in the background while doing other things so I don't want to disparage him too much but his content is fairly low effort. He takes Reddit posts and reads them aloud. There is some utility to this in that I don't have to occupy my eyeballs reading reddit when I am doing chores and he also picks the greatest hits of trainwrecks, filtering out fake stories or uninteresting ones. (We had a bad player, we did the sensible thing and rapidly got sick of his nonsense and kicked him out the game before it escalated, the game went perfectly afterwards.) At the same time though, he is dependent on others for content. He's an aggregator and he seems to get the bulk of the rewards for it.

A Name Apart

You wrote a very interesting comment that I feel epitomizes the old American spirit of: we can come together as Americans and appreciate our differences if not for government and big corporations. The new spirit of America seems to be that we cannot come together as Americans and we will use the government and corporations and media to attack each other. I think the new spirit is more true in that not all people can come together. But the old American solution of freedom is probably still the solution: providing different options for people who cannot agree rather than a constant battle for monopoly control

What a shame. But preferred Bens, Seth’s and your channel anyway. Keep up the good work. Greetings

SpeakingBeast

Thanks for the heads up on Rascal - I hope they run a lean, mean, TTRPG-reviewing machine so we can continue to get unbiased, human-created, critical reviews of both the & and independent content!

MrGunn

@Fredric Schmitt I am not certain but Erik Tenkar has stated that both Ben and Seth take money for reviews.

Scott

Here we all go, down in flames together!

Russell Miller

That's really too bad. I liked Dicebreaker. You're right about the D&D cycle coming up, but it will turn eventually and there will be a Dicebreaker-sized hole for someone to fill.

Tuska

Moving forward it pays to stay small but hit hard with streamlined production and killer content/products. Much like in combat guerilla/partisan tactics and business models will save this hobby.

Frederic Schmitt

That’s fine. I don’t support them financially. I just watch their videos once in a while 😇 thanks for your feedback, MrGunn.

Gaming journalism has been largely managed by the industry for a long time and the consolidation has just enhanced it. If your writers cannot be independently critical out of fear of not getting a preview etc. then they become redundant as AI gets good enough to write middling to fawning reviews. If viewers dont provide subscription fees, then even independent reviewers will need to supplement their income somehow which means they too will take sponsored reviews etc. However, the smaller channels generally are willing to be more critical even of sponsored content. We just have to learn to sense who is giving an honest assessment even with that understanding and who is doing it for the clicks or to please a sponsor.

Megatron

The link isn't working for me. Is that happening to anyone else?

MelodicMethod

did you mean "squanch"? Just kidding, Rick & Morty reference, in case the joke falls flat
