The D&D PH and Shadowdark were hottest games at GenCon. A VERY extended video. PDM will be in Asia for the next two weeks so this is the biggest chunk of content.

Only thing I think I would take from this new edition is weapon mastery stuff. Otherwise I’m staying with the rules I’ve been using, or switching to something else entirely.

I think all creators should review the PHB with images of stick figures drawn in MS paint instead of the official pages

PDM - Kelsey released an official Ranger Class as part of the Kickstarter, so technically there is an official Ranger Class in ShadowDark though it's not in the rules book. Thanks for the great video.

Great idea to review both products side by side, and a very fair and balanced approach. Like yourself I'm neutral on 5E and have always thought it was good game, just not my cup of tea. Shadowdark's success is such a positive the hobby, like yourself I thought it would get swallowed up by all the bigger fish at the Ennies. But as you said the Shadowdark Army voted en masse. Looked like you had a wonderful time at Gencon, as I told you it's on my bucket list!

5e took characters from vulnerable heroes to nigh-unkillable Superheroes. New DnD only doubles down on that theme, so if u like always winning & neverr dying, you'll like new DnD. My humble opinion. Hoping to transition soon to a more OSR style DnD clone like SD, DCC, or hopefully in 2025 a finalized, bloody, dark & grim DEATHBRINGER!

Great vid, PDM, good to hear you had a good time and people recognize you! But wotc, man, how many times is the community going to give them slack when they continually crap on the very people who promote their game and products? All anyone needs to know about which game to play is watch this video and note which book Professor flips through and which book is blocked out. Ridiculous.

Jordan might not have known that you just can't show every page of a book and avoid copyright. DnD shorts knew and did it to attack wizards. Mike Shea knew and used it to further his activism, "it is your fault for not releasing PDFs"

Yes and a good point to bring up. There were several additional PDFs available as add-ons in the update section of the ShadowDark Kickstarter. I almost overlooked them and wonder if others might have.

I like D&D, but not the direction it’s going. If it’s completely virtual, and there’s no physical copy of the book, our table will not play. Glad to hear that you had fun at Gen Con. I hope to go in 2025. I am going to page though so looking forward to your events. Have a great time in Asia!

I checked out the Gooey Cube booth. The main thing that caught my eye from the adverts was their Darkenhaven city setting. What I didn't know is how DAMN BIG it was. This is likely the most detailed city ever conceived. The damn box is came in weighed nearly 11 lbs. The sticker shock got me....$175. Had to pass on it.

PDM, thanks for your insight and detailed reporting and the many subjects you managed to cover in this video. I happen to agree with you in your opinions here and also greatly appreciate all the other RPG YouTubers you both collaborate with and have mentioned. I took the time to vote in the Ennies and happy to they received the awards they certainly earned. Also wanted to mention that I both appreciate and realize how much time and effort you put into these videos through scripting and editing. One question outside of the subjects covered here. While at GENCON did you discover any new or useful information, game mechanics, or innovative ideas for consideration to incorporate into your Deathbringer game? Thanks again for all you do.

Enjoy your trip, Professor. I've been to Tokyo many times, and while I'm not a city person, it's pretty much the nicest city I've ever visited. I had some of the best Italian food of my entire life there. Oh, and beware, this time of year it's hot and humid. Take care yourself.

Aside from the e-mails you mentioned, I recommend searching Arcane Library on Kickstarter. Then click on ShadowDark RPG and then the "Update" tab. The latest update was 21 JULY 2024. All the updates listed below that have additional info and the PDF's for additional ShadowDark material. Hope this helps for those who may have missed some of the goodies there.

Yep! Shadowdark is pretty darn good. Here is a link for 119 Free Shadowdark RPG Products. Thanks for the great video. I sure love hearing about GenCon and your cool colleagues! I may have to check out the dancing bard. My daughter has a degree in choreography and I’ve seen some dark, primal dance performances. The New Zealand Haka is pretty chilling to see as well. I’m also think of the of the ideas for the Eldar Harlequins and Exarchs that use dance for their battling. It could be cool, but in Neu DnD it’s probably a little to saccharine for my tastes.

Exactly, like most GMs, I collect ideas from all kinds of TTRPGs for home brew rules and update them base on the newest and BEST ideas out there. I just don't buy the products from corporations, publishers, or even other creators who hate me or those who are like me. WoTC is off the table for me but if they happen to present a good idea I might borrow it without purchasing any of their stuff. That is why reviews are sooo important. Plus, they can't copywrite game mechanics. :)

Safe travels PDM. That part of the globe was just in the news. Also, I was at "The Hump" for about a month before the US Army realized they cut me the wrong orders. STILL one of the best places I've been. Enjoy Seoul!
