D&D Makes a Mind-Blowing Decision

Comments

All kobolds are EVIL!!! And WOTC can't help themselves. They will memory hole and they will make the Caves of Chaos woke. Thankfully, I have the original.

Enishi X

Very nice 💯.

SpeakingBeast

I would be (pleasantly) surprised if they acknowledge Gygax without some sort of messaging alongside the credit. It's the starter box for new players, so I will assume "consultants" were involved.

Eric Mason

I hope they fix the fortress. It's not a good layout defensively to have buildings on the outside of a wall that would protect attackers, looking at you chapel. I know it's fantasy, but it's going to be foundational to the next generations' concept of what castles look like, so make it a good one.

Lee Dunning

They've drunk way too much of the Kool-Aid to acknowledge Mr. Gygax. They live in fear of the shrieking banshees who prefer their dwarves to get matching tattoos and to bake pastries instead of dungeon delving. I'll be happy to be wrong, but I'm not counting on it.

Dear Professor, Greetings, interesting news to be sure however, I am not sure how I feel about this. While a great trip down memory lane for us oldsters, to me bringing back Keep on the Borderlands speaks more to Hasbros creative bankruptcy and lack of imagination than anything else. Hasbros cannot seem come up with anything new, other than the 5e rules which are arguably a tweaked version of 3.5, they have not produced any new settings or created any really memorable adventure modules, other than perhaps Phandelver. I like your point about the silliness of 'warning labels', as a society we have not come up with a good way to reconcile how we should separate great works of art often from sometimes very crummy artists. We all know Lovecraft was virulent anti-Semite, Howard was a racist, Rowling is transphobic, Picasso beat his wives, Lead Belly was a murderer, and Gygax was a druggie and a philanderer, however one cannot dismiss the quality of their works nor its enduring impact. I have no solution to the issue of how to separate good art from bad artist, however, I do know I am weary of moralizing hypocrites and their love of standing in crowds and on-line forums to be seen by others and receive praise as 'do-gooders'. What really irks about all this, is Hasbros wants to stand on the shoulders of giants like Gygax and Arneson and cash in on their creativity, yet they have the temerity to put warnings on their works and support ridiculous narratives like orcs are analogs for African Americans and gold for experience points is an analog for colonialism. Please spare us Hasbros 'do-gooders', drop the moralizing, instead focus your efforts on creating something new and interesting that will endure the test of time. Thanks again for another thought provoking article. Best regards, MrGunn PS Well done DB, you have eliminated another bard, keep up the fine work.

MrGunn

@SpeakingBeast Sassa-phrasin 'consultant' rick'n rackers. 😋

MrGunn

@Eric Mason Next you will be asking where the kitchen smoke goes and where the privies are...🤣🤣🤣 I hear you, I too appreciate some nod to actual logic in my fantasy worlds, therefore, I recommend you check out HârnWorld from Columbia Games Inc.

I'm pleasantly surprised, The Keep is one of the best modules ever written IMHO because of it's sandbox format. But I'd be concerned to se how WOTC approach it from the point of view of narrative; will they try and make it into a more of a railroaded story? I'm running The Keep with 2 different groups right now and they love the open feel and that fact that there are always multiple plot hooks for them to follow.

Brent Norton

As a graduate of Dungeoncraft University and a survivor of the Caves of Carnage I won’t be helping with this endeavor of a WotC cash crab. After the different WotC debacles I am out. Their Infinite stair case is a hodgepodge of old modules and has not been getting great reviews as well. I will continue to support the Caves of Chaos videos as I still go back and share those, but I will promote Shadowdark as better system to use for the KotB not the new addition.

Daniel Defazio

To be fair, I don't think WoTC ever said or implied orcs were analogue. Their position is orcs are a diverse culture like humans.

MrGunn

@DungeonCraft Are you a good or a bad orc asked Glinda.... WAAAG! chop chop chop, nice wand witch.... Kobolds are evil dog things not misunderstood mini-dragons!

Thanks PDM for that history lesson about the points for gold system. My undergrad college forced our D&D group off campus because the uninformed were louder and would not listen to reason. Sometimes a monster is just a monster. Sometimes a castle is just a castle that needs raiding. NOT EVERYTHING is an allegory for something else. Lastly, TTRPGs force players to take decisive actions and responsibility for said actions. At 42 yr/old, I love using it to teach my kids (13, 6) those very things. I guess some folks just can't pick up what you're throwin' down PDM.

Elvis Ramone

The one thing that really caught my eye was the fact Goodman Games no longer has the license for Keep on the Borderlands. Which means they likely do not have the license for all the other ones they did. I am still missing The Isle of Dread and Lost City from that collection. Crud.

Jay

Ah the virtue signaling unoppressed who were never appointed spokesman for those who where never oppressed and whose ancestors who were oppressed are either long dead or don't care. Sorry these uninformed people chases you guys off campus for playing a game of make believe with make believe monsters. It all sounds so ridiculous doesn't it. Happy you can still enjoy the game and with your kids is even better in my humble opinion. :)

Steven Bogart

Thanks for the video with positive news! I'd like to give a shout-out to the Holmes Basic Set, my first experience with D&D in the late 1970s. My version came with Keep on the Borderlands and cardboard chits for generating random numbers (because of a shortage of polyhedral dice). Fun times!!

Jay

Yep! I'm betting your right on this one. Players Handbook 2024 is for some of the more "Modern" and "Progressive" activist players of the game. Easily identified by clown hair, nose ringed, social justice activist zealots who are virtue signaling fools on behalf of those who never appointed them as spokesman. Always crying some form of racism, sexism, or other ism and typically followed up with some type of phobic. These types know very little of history, life, or anything outside of their pathetic social circles. They constantly complain, add nothing of value to society, and typically destroy rather than build or create. These types love to spread hate as long as it makes them feel good about their miserable lives. There is more than enough evidence out there in a simple search online to support this over the last decade. I agree with PDM's assessment. Sometimes monsters are just monsters.

Jay

PDM, I really enjoyed your Caves of Carnage over the original Keep on the Borderlands even though the Keep on the Borderlands and that boxed set you held up in the video was the same one I bought as a kid. That module will always have deep memories of a good time with my friends as a novice DM. I also, completely agree that sandbox adventures such as this one are great for new players and GMs for the same reasons. I'm trying to make a few of my own sandbox adventures in a similar design. Hey, we could use a Dungeon Craft video on how to make a good sandbox adventure. Not sure you've touched on that just yet. :)

It’s WotC so I am cautiously optimistic about this news. If anyone can mess this no brainer up, it’s them. That being said, it’s a good idea especially since they are moving towards VTT. I know VTT allows any kind of terrain but I really think it works well with dungeon crawling even if future ones will feel like railroads. Look at MMOs that WotC is trying to emulate.

Jeff Krus

That's me sitting through hours of professional development for teachers..

Scott Mckay

I think they're hoping to revive the hex crawl and dungeon-delving elements of old in modern audiences because then they can sell more content on their VTT it's how I would go about it personally.

Lemonsaurus

Hi Professor, I'm really looking forward to the supercut video of the Caves of Carnage. I might have given the series around a hundred views by myself 😂😂😂 I hope we can get a part of the video on the medusa or a separate video about her, you mentioned you'd be interested in that in the past ☺️
