To be honest whenever I play 5e with a GM that strictly abides by the RAW, with the games focus of Rules over Rulings I often think to myself "why do we even need a GM? Why am I not just playing Baldur's Gate or something similar" To give an example an evil necromancer was doing some ritual resurrecting the undead in the tomb we were in, the paladin asked "can I use divine sense to get some information on the ritual, how to stop it etc?" GM replied that Detect Magic would be more along the lines of what he should use, so I cast detect magic when my turn rolls around and the GM tells me that I detect a necromancy spell and refused to give any more information 🙄 I genuinely think an AI could have handled that ruling better.

Good information. I'm not against AI but I don't want to replace people and just use it as a tool.

Also regarding creating characters I use chatgpt extensively to help build 5e characters since I frankly don't have time to look through all the abilities and weigh them all. I'll just say "this is my character I do xzy with them, what spell do you recommend?" and look through the 5 options it gives me rather than looking through the list of Spells. Or I might go "I saw this spell and it looks cool, how can I pick it up as a warlock?" and it will tell me what feat etc to pick up.

A Name Apart

What kind of answer were you expecting? I am assuming the plot was just go kill the necromancer to stop him did you want your investigation to provide some way to stop him without killing him? How, like you go get some mcguffin to stop the spell?

Drago Russo

You're killing me Smalls. Really, that is your example? I have just finished, yesterday, my first adventure ready to be published. I am working on the layouts now. What is it about you ask? Lizardfolk in a swamp. lol

I use AI while running sessions for rules questions. I can type in what is happening and it gives me within seconds an exact answer and we move on.

Dear Professor: Did anyone not see this coming. You already covered the split in the tracks, between AI digital D&D and face to face RPGs. It is pretty clear Hasbro wants to pivot and become computer game company. Look what they did with the Avalon Hill and Axis & Allies board game products. I see more divestiture in physical goods coming. AI is based on large data sets, data originally created by human beings. What happens when humans stop being creative and start relying only on data that was already created; stagnation. Unlike NFTs and cryptocurrency, I see AI as being more useful in the both the long and short run. However, AI is not all that intelligent, there is a lot of hype surrounding it, just like the 'Cloud' back in the 2000s. AI will never be able to replace human creativity and I think its over use will lead to a certain banality of output as every one is relying on the same data and same means of generating content. Great article thanks for sharing! Best Regards, MrGunn PS The fight against the machine and the coming stagnation has already been prophesized: 'Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind' Long live the jihad!.

The Blind Bard

I use ChatGPT to enhance my games all the time. Since I’m blind, everything for me takes longer session prep included. I use it to give me ideas and sometimes I use it to generate step blocks for monsters instead of slogging through D&D Beyond to look them up. in general, it works well as long as you remember that it’s your ideas and you need to drive those ideas and refine those ideas and not depends solely on ChatGPT

Lemonsaurus

Pretty much, yes. Just some more information. Whatever the GM wanted to tell us. If the only solution to stop the ritual was to kill the necromancer then I would have liked to know that, if killing the necromancer wouldn't have stopped the ritual I would also have liked to know that. But the spell as per the RAW doesn't actually give any such information so it was just a wasted action telling me what I already knew

I use AI to have it compose songs about my players' characters' exploits. They hear them every once in a while in the local inns. I'm not fast enough to write a song about how Ylvi beat up Good Ole Whatshisname on the fly in a game, but ChatGPT is. And it's generally pretty good at stuff like that.

Jorge Santiago

Dear PDM, ChatGPT can actually create that 5th level half tabaxi, half dragonborn dual class character. It's not hypothetical, it's here.

Scott

If Professor Dungeon Master ever goes AI, then it will be Deathbringer and not skynet bringing about the end of the world as we know it!

MrGunn

@Jorge Santiago Oh, the humanity, I can’t talk, ladies and gentlemen. Honest, it’s just laying there, a mass of smoking wreckage. 🤣🤣🤣

Solid analysis, Professor. I think we’ll see things like DMs asking the D&D “AI” for rules references, quickly built NPCs, adventure content for those times when players zig instead of zag, and pretty much any natural language interaction that helps DMs and players do D&D “stuff” faster. I recently took my adventure idea into ChatGPT and used it to refine a few things, asked it for updated content as I turned a few creative “knobs,” and ended up with content I could copy and paste into a document. It was my idea and creativity, but the chat bot helped me to quickly reference information and integrate changes I wanted to see. It also output the adventure’s text which I then further reviewed and refined. Overall, it was a force multiplier that saved me a lot of time, but it was still my imagination that sparked it all. In the end, my friends and I had three really fun sessions playing out the adventure.

As far asing Has rolled using ChatGPT I can see where they wouldn't want to put in proprietary info such as new game mechanics or classes/ancestors into a publicly used AI. I work for General Mills and eve we have our own AI to help with various calculations/formulations that we may not want our competitors to be privvy to. In a world of data/identity theft it just makes sense.

Ian Butterworth

A.I is already here and we are using it indirectly through the websites and applications we access. The question isn't should we use A.I.? It is, what should we be using it for and what are the limits?

NØKKEN_WAITS

I know it's just the reality, it's here, and it is prevalant. That doesn't mean i have to like it. If i learn an rpg product has used AI, I lose interest, and won't support it. Same goes for music, film, novels etc. Just simply not interested in AI generated anything.
