I reveal some sales numbers and analyze what went wrong with the launch of One D&D, D&D 5.5, D&D 2024, D&D 2025--or whatever we're supposed to call it. BUT THEN I explain how indie games are benefitting.

Excited to see your take on this Professor

Bagel-Man

Excellent video as always, I’m looking forward to retirement craft

"Don't take stock advice from a YouTube Dungeon Master." That should be on the first T-shirt for your Dungeon Craft merch collection.

The comparison of DnD vs TTRPG fans to Warhammer vs Other TTMG fans was spot on. Cool kids & old school Grognards aren't playing DnD anymore. Other games like Shadowdark have stolen their thunder, just like Deathbringer eventually will, too. The iron is hot for new alternatives. Shadowdark's recent success proves that the new DnD didnt suck as much oxygen out of the TTRPG community as originally expected. WOTC has left the door wide open for others & fans are willing to spend $ on great projects by creators they respect & follow.

Steven Sweet

Heck yeah I want retirement craft!

Bryan Stephens

Dan, you have been spot on. We are basically 1e Pathfinder types for D20, and thanks to you I am considering an Old School Essientials game. With Deathbringer dice.

Rod Thomson

I thought to be an early adopter you had to start playing in the 70s... Enjoyed your analysis Prof, and the hopeful message!

Pinxton

I really think D&D as we knew it died a long time ago. We are witnessing the throes of death and twitching. GO DEATHBRINGER!

Tuska

Not good. Well only analog and OSR for me!

Agile Monk

This was the best of the best on this video, Dan. I need to buy you a glass of your favorite Scotch or what have you my friend. Thank you for all you do for the hobby. Love and blessings to you and yours ❤️🙏🇺🇸.

samurguybri

Great video. DnD was the tide that lifted all boats before and with its huge share of the audience will always provide people for the indie games. Now, those order boosts are it and will lift others and not be so dependent on DnD

Investors and equity funds will move into higher yield returns in a more volatile market. So at some point, as Hasbro drops, it's yield (based on dividend) increases. If you can predict the target yield (high), you can predict the floor in the stock price. There is a risk, which often gets overlooked, which is if the stock drops too much the company may cut their dividend to save money. Look at the debt (loan to value ratio), if it is high, they may cut the dividend to cover their nut. (Note: I worked at a hedge fund, international private bank, and was a financial engineer in my previous life).

Looking forward to seeing how things go. Competition should benefit everyone.

Firstspear

Slava Deathbringer! Slava Shadowdark! The Old Gods are dead, long live the New Gods!

The Mando Commando

Should we ever cross paths, professor, I'll buy you a pint. The wife and I have talked about going to Gen Con in the future

MrGunn

Dear Professor, Interesting analysis, I appreciate hearing your perspective. I agree, believe them when they tell you! Like a certain failed artist who wrote a book about his struggles or that guy who had that little red book. They always tell you… You have been pretty much spot on, but don’t pat yourself too hard, as the good book says, pride is a tripping hazard. 😁😉😋 Keep up the great work, I look forward to your next video. Play games, have fun, God Bless us every one. Best regards, MrGunn PS Hey DB, What is the most delightful sound in the world? The sound a bard makes when they are thrown into a bottomless pit! 🤣🤣🤣

MrGunn

@Bagel-Man Now if only they will stop trying to take my Social Security, while simultaneously tanking my 401K…😒🙄

I always enjoy these sorts of videos. I don’t know why people consider it “click bait” since you put a lot of time and effort into tracking down these numbers and then give insight into them. These are hardly “hot takes”. I DM my teenage son and his friend in D&D using 5e. I initially worried if they’d only want to play online but they are perfectly happy with a blend of minis and theater of the mind. The times I’ve played as a player using D&D Beyond rather than a paper character sheet I’ve always felt a bit disconnected. I just don’t like it. I see the appeal for folks who only have the option to play remotely but I definitely prefer analog physical dice and paper/pencil. Keep doing whatever it is you do to create this content.

I’ve seen the increasing indie market success firsthand. My local Barnes and Noble is selling DCC, DCC adventure anthologies, and MCC. If you told me five years ago that B&N would have ANY Goodman Games material on their shelves next to D&D, let alone MCC, I’d think you were crazy

DM DooM

Great coverage as always, I do have to wonder if we are going to see a vid from you taking a longer look at the Western Reaches kickstarter.

The only time in the last 20 years i've given WoTC money was buying digital copies of the AD&D books so i don't damage my originals. There's never been a reason to update to 5th edition. I simply read other books and incorporate rules i like into a d20 system.

I need Retirement Craft too!
