I analyze several systems to answer this question: which TTRPG system is MOST like the AD&D featured on "Stranger Things" (aka AD&D) No spoilers here--but I touch on a LOT of TTRGS you have been clamoring for.

What IS This?

Dang, someone beat me to the first "like" yet again!! Simple answer to video is No. The current "Muppet Show" isnt DnD. That comment made me chuckle. Kudos PDM. You got me. Loved the C&Cs shout out. Played 3 C&C intro games at Gary Con & loved it. It's definitely the spiritual successor to old Gygax style DnD. My current gaming group is transitioning soon from 5e to C&Cs, and I can't wait.

Bagel-Man

Excited to watch PDM

Pinxton

I love how excited you get talking about watches!

Gavin the Mystic

How do you get a third level wizard with an average of 27 hit points?

madcurry

Great list of recommendations. For some reason I have all but Hyperborea in my collection. I’ll have to remedy that.

Pinxton

I’m not really a Watch person, I mean, I wear an Apple Watch, and I have a G-Shock laying around the house somewhere, if that counts.

Pinxton

Let’s get deathbringer to Kickstarter, get you paid in full, and look forward to that watch enthusiast YouTube channel! I say go ahead and cross promote the hell out of it. The only downside I can think of is you’re gonna need a different set, something that looks more like a jewelry store than a dungeon lol, anyway no reply needed, I appreciate you and everything you do, and I cannot wait to cough up the cash when death bringer goes live

Benjamin Marra

I love the flavour of HYPERBOREA, but when I run it, I use EZD6 mechanics.

I'll be looking for some of these games at upcoming cons. On another note, when we were at the National Watch and Lock Museum (https://museum.nawcc.org/) in 2022, the had a watches of James Bond exhibit, which was fantastic.

Don't Die

Castles and Crusades rocks

Loved the talk about the watches. I'd love to start collecting someday. I'm still rocking a Victorinox Maverick diving watch that I got like 8 years ago. Works great to this day.

DeadMarsh

I am so very Happy you featured Hyperborea and Castles & Crusades. To me HYPERBOREA 3E IS D&D. Jeff Talanian is a low key genius and probably the nicest game designer out there other than Kelsey. Hyperborea is something special and I hope more people give it the attention it deserves, and I’ll say out of all the games I have on my shelf (And I have a lot) Hyperborea 3e is of the highest quality out of all of them.

C&C is what got me back into Role playing . After a longer than wanted hiatus. Its is still my go to if I want to have some old school fun! Keep up the Great work :) Also you should check out AA by Trolllord games. Epic pulp fiction rpg.

I purchased Dungeon Crawl Classics but haven't cracked it open yet. As a DM, my players are very 5E oriented. A few of us have played Starfinder (a great game, btw) but most are weary about trying a new system. How would you approach getting players to try something new?

MrGunn

🤣 AD&D when “Run Away!” was a very viable and valid survival strategy.

Scott Graham

Excellent systems, thanks for covering them! I'm not into watches but I did enjoy hearing you talk about them and learned more facts/information that I might never use but I love learning new things.

Richard W Maxwell

I run Shadowdark for my family, but I am still a fan of AD&D and have all of my original books. I pull my monsters and spells from it along with some stuff from 2e.

Scott

I do enjoy the flavor of old school, will have to check out Castles and Crusades.

Paul Underhill

I ordered the C&C bundle a few days ago and will get the books in the mail tomorrow. I ordered it because i was told it resembled 2nd AD&D the most

John Clark

Thanks for the list! Yeah that art is GREAT! I was one of the 1st professional DMs in America and ran thousands of hours of 5E for hundreds of clients. 5E was great for beginners which is why I switched to it from Pathfinder, but I quickly discovered how broken 5E is! So I made my own book of house rules to make it feel more old school, and man did the players love the new grit. Not going to buy the new fruitloop version, going to run Shadowdark instead.

A great video that one - I’m very much of the opinion of play whatever DnD or TTRPG you enjoy - last week I brought Root

Pinxton

ok, hours later, it just popped in my head. i since the death of val kilmer im watching all the older movies. in the middle of willow and it just pops in my head. Can you please make a sample video of what Pdm watch video might be, maybe patreon only if you think it will mess up the youtube algorithm. i think it would be awesome. im sure many of us will agree that would be awesome. perhaps a poll?

If you absolutely insist upon playing AD&D in year of our lord 2025 you are easily able to do so. Pretty good game actually. I started with 2nd edition. I think every edition has something interesting to offer, even that bad one no one likes. The bad one" no one" likes is someone's favorite. I would say this is also true of almost every other RPG as well. Almost all the RPGs, aside from troll games that were made bad on purpose like FATAL are cool in their own way. I don't currently play a game called dungeons & dragons, I run vampire the Masquerade at the moment although we're about to have our grand finale in about a week and a half. After that I'll probably switch to cyberpunk red or a custom-made Savage worlds hack.

MelodicMethod

I checked out the Seiko store. Some of the diver models look pretty awesome. Three hundy is not bad, but the fact they just die after a time is a deal breaker.

Firstspear

Rolex of Theseus? D&D of Theseus?

Flash Gorgon

The elf in the thumbnail looks like she worships Slaneesh, which is fitting since it seems that's where D&D is headed.

I aspire to someday have a Grand Seiko, but now I have to put that Tudor on the list too.

Last I checked GDF was sold out. (It's at -6 tickets.) Your sponsor should be pleased.
