Let's look under the hood and find out what makes 5E tick. Ability scores, bonuses, racial bonuses, proficiency bonuses--it's a lot to take in but all the books can be reduced down to a couple charts and key concepts. Even if you DON'T play 5E you'll appreciate the synergy of the game and be able to run it without using a rulebook.

Excellent work. I love this kind of stuff- breaking down rules mechanics. We’ve entered the inner sanctum and the foundations of existence have been revealed to us. “How do you feel about that??”

Great rules breakdown. Your videos like this one can really help DMs see the “Matrix code” of D&D / RPGs. As a dad with two daughters, I loved your comment to your daughter about her boyfriend not being able to stop by your house for a week. That was a really down to earth “dad moment.”

Wotc needs to sell a product hence the feats and other 'innovations'. They need people coming back and buying.

Love the start of the video, too!

Great video. I would like to hear more about your son's hack of D&D and why he doesn't like his father's. :)

I dig the opening. Great deconstruction of the core mechanics, thanks for that! Also love the Dad moment in there. My daughters who are approaching boyfriend age were listening along and I paused it laughing to point out I'm not the only Dad who says stuff like this! Cheers! Ps. I hope the covid specter doesn't darken your doorstep. May good health follow you and your family into the new year.

This really put 5E into perspective. I like some of the ideas in 5E but would never run it as is.

Bonus modifiers, at its base, that really dont make too much of a difference, interesting. Supplements that would change that in many regards, even more interesting. It is such things that sell well for those whom would seek to better their chances. It is now that I realize how simple 5E really is.

Hey PDM, Would you consider doing one of these for call of cthulhu? Great video as always. Thank you very much for your expertise.

Chanced across this comment while researching for my NEXT Masterclass video. It's much tough for CoC because skills range from %5 to about 80%. I think my CthuluCraft ruleset is the hack. Just roll a d20 and add d6 to the thing you're good at. If you're a reporter, add d6 to library use and talking to people. Gumshoe detective? Library use and Handgun. Doctor? First aid and credit rating.
