I got recommended this video again by YouTube which has forgotten I've already seen it, and I wasn't on Patreon back then, so I had a look. I will say that in Feb 2023, I will offer the hot take that D&D will probably go on a lot better without WotC than with them. That's not me being particularly hostile after the OGL fiasco … I said on Jan 4th that what they were doing was so dangerous that I could not give *HASBRO* as a whole any money unless/until they stopped doing it—and they have. But I'm kinda ambivolent about WotC because they've been pretty awful to players, their quality has suffered horribly, and they don't seem to understand what they're doing wrong. Meanwhile we have other people fundamentally improving the game in multiple directions depending on what you consider to be an "improvement". I just don't think we need WotC, unless we want to cater to the casual player who really just kinda wants the D&D mobile game WotC wasn't making for our benefit anyway. I don't think we need to cater to that user. Not because I want to gatekeep them or anything, but because there's enough microtransaction-laiden trash games out there…and this one promises IMO to turn them off of D&D rather than turn them on to it. I'd like to hope for management churn to reform the company, but I don't see it. So I'm just kind of lukewarm.

All that said, I agree that 5E frontloads the character. And I think that's bad for new DMs. A new DM playing an older game even with some modern training wheels still has a lot less to keep track of, which means the notion of doing it is less intimidating. I think I prefer this. Which is why I think I'd recommend an amalgam of rules created by you, Ben, Tracy Hickman, Mike Shea, and Runehammer to minimize the cognitive load on a new DM to the point they almost don't need charts anymore. Hey wait, that's what I'm doing! So of course in the spirit of how these things work, sooner or later I guess that means I write my own system.
