The Compleat Strategist, I know it well. A very well stocked store. PS Is every trip to NYC going to be accompanied by a tax write off video, PDM goes to Yankee stadium, PDM eats at Katz deli, PDM visit the MOMA... LOL <8oD

I remember when it was wall-to-wall Avalon Hill, SPI, AD&D and Traveller... amazing little finds hidden on the bottom shelves. Picked up B and X there. Rounded out my AD&D hardback collection. Made a special trip to get FASA Trek when it was released. Moved away from NYC in the late 90s. Last visited in '02. So much had changed even then.

I’ve been there many times, though I used to go to the one on 57th street more. It was like walking into a magical place! I will always remember that store!

Compleat is a different word. Geeky reference to Phyrexia in M:TG. "Having all necessary or desired elements or skills" -Webster

Being older than most people here, I remember the word "Compleat" being used for 'complete' long before M:TG. LONG before!

I used to go the Compleat Strategist in Boston in the mid-late '80s.

Tried to go there a month ago last time I was in Manhattan. My time window was short, and when I got there they closed a few minutes early, so I missed out. I’ll have to find time to go there soon!

Was trying to figure out how to spend some time in NYC during a holiday from UK in September. This answers that (I'd already figured out somewhere in Boston to drop into, Pandemonium if I recall the name). Just need to figure some "diversion" in Washington Dc :D. Postage from the States to the UK being soooo expensive, who needs to bring back clothes in the suitcase.

@Billy Weir There are lots of gaming places in the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia) too. Just do a quick search and you'll find some real gems. If you go to Baltimore then head over to my favorite place: Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie. Excellent store with a vibrant gaming community.

Castles and crusades. It brought me back to d&d after just glancing at the local Barnes and noble rpg wall. This was before I found hankerin and then pdm

The store name is a reference to "The Compleat Enchanter" by L. Sprague de Camp, which is itself a reference to "The Compleat Angler" by Izaak Walton, 1653.

I loved that book! The L. Sprague de Camp book. I haven't read the fishing one, but I looked it up. I live in the historical section of VA, so we still have odd spellings for place names. Thanks for that bit of trivia!

Alex Gombach

Been going there since I was a kid. My son and I stumbled across the only other remaining sister branch out in PA while at a lacrosse tournament.

It's a nice place and well stocked.
