I didn't quit my day job until I had a sturdy business in D&D self-publishing and a lot of cash set aside! Health insurance and retirement savings required a perspective shift, but it's all surmountable. I'm on an ACA healthcare plan (decent), use a SEP IRA + Roth IRA for retirement savings, and gratefully pay a Certified Personal Accountant to keep my biz finances in order. I've written projects for [insert major publisher who requires NDAs] in the past and made far, far less freelancing in that way than self-publishing. I'd posit that freelancing is a good supplement/resume builder, but not a reliable primary income source in this industry. If time = money, you'll always be capped (whether freelancing, editing, working for someone else... etc.). Building up a catalogue of products of your own to sell and scale is the best on-ramp to sustainable profit, if you ask me. I'd add that DTRPG and DMs Guild do take a huge cut from the profit margin -- I'm of the opinion that a mix of those platforms and self-publishing direct on your own platform is a stronger blend. I view DTRPG and DMs Guild more as a marketing tool than a profit engine.

Thanks, PDM! :) I wish I could be at GenCon this year, but a friend's wedding took precedence this time around. Hopefully next year, though. Would love to catch you there (or at another con)!

Kelsey, as someone that just bought Shadowdark RPG, you have a winning combination. I wish you great luck on the business end.

Thank you so much, William! I just got that shipped out with a bit of delay (was away on travel the past week). :) I put a fun little extra thing in there, too. I hope you enjoy them!
