I think you are spot on with the idea that the best D&D is the one you build/mod. Another great video, keep up the great work!

Ron F.

Ron is a cool guy. Thanks for your thoughts because I always appreciate your point of view. "Build your D&D like a BMX bike": I understand that reference and totally agree. More importantly, Gygax and Arneson agreed too from what I've read.

Andrew

Great video PDM. Just as a quick recommendation for a really great read and fun romp---Michael Chabon's Gentlemen of the Road. While the setting is historical and not fantasy, it's a wonderful little page turner, and it's short. Set in the 900s, it follows the adventures of a couple of sword swinging swindlers in their adventures through southern Ukraine.

Lee Caddick

Your Dad taxed your pocket money? That sounds horrible!

MrGunn

An outstanding porch talk, thank you for sharing your thoughts PDM. I feel that people are doing what they always do when these new editions are on the horizon. We are full of fear uncertainty and doubt (FUD) (I used we on purpose), will our beloved D&D be changed beyond all recognition, will 1D&D become a version 4, etc, etc. Pundits love the time around version changes, it means they can stoke FUD and opine for clicks (no insult intended PDM). Personally, I am not concerned or alarmed by rules changes brought forth in 1D&D. What I am concerned about are the business decisions and practices that WotC/Hasboro are going to pursue, like putting D&D behind a Hasbro walled garden, where folks will be forced to pay to play D&D the Hasboro way and will allow only cosmetic rules modifications and choices. I am worried about micro-transactions for creatures, skins, and possibly optional items or the ability to mod things. I am worried the 1D&D walled garden and VTT will further stifle player creativity. I already think 5e stifles player creativity by replacing role playing with roll play, e.g. Persuasion and Intuition checks, and will make it difficult to find people who want to play a different way. Just like Pathfinder, when you pointed out the dwindling crowds in the convention hall. I am afraid of WotC/Hasboro exerting such tight control over the IP that 3rd parties will be discouraged from producing anything not WotC/Hasboro approved so Hasboro's suits get a cut, and that they will litigiously go after anyone who dares use their IP in any way they don't approve, Games-Workshop springs to mind. Will WotC/Hasboro in their greed damage the 3rd party ecosystem you say is renewed whenever there is a new version of D&D released, only time will tell. As to EZD6, just wow, DMG Info was correct, it is possibly the best RPG ever. EZD6 is astoundingly good, I highly recommend everyone to pick up a copy, even if you don't play, you will learn something about game mechanics. Strikes in EZD6 are fantastic, I will use that, the magic system, WOW, amazing. The only thing I miss is a leveling system but that is easily corrected. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, I really appreciate your insights and is why I am a Patreon.

MrGunn

A seriously tough love situation, LOL. However, look how well he turned out.

Sean Grimm

When it comes to Monopoly, I'm a "Boot" person myself. ;-)

Jay

PDM, happy your considering going the way of EZD6 with some of your rules and game mechanics. I ran across that game by mistake yet once I started looking into it I was hooked. Now I'm home brewing it and using it for all my games. Needless to say it's a big hit and the game moves so much quicker. Also, Scotty's Discord Channel is full of great ideas and rules clarification. Scotty is also making videos again to give examples of game play or how to handle situations. I've been on this channel since the beginning and will likely always support the Crafters Guild Channels. You always bring great insight and fresh ideas to this game. Thanks.

Jay

My brother taxed his kids Halloween loot when they were little. Only a few pieces but still funny.

Jay

Interesting insight as always MrGunn. As for EZD6 Scotty and Brandish may be doing something in the near future for Character advancement or progression. Read something on that and happy they are going to produce more products for EZD6. It will be money well spent. Might want to add DM'sCraft (DM_Scottys server) to your Discord Channels if your on there. Some great stuff on there in my humble opinion.

Cassidy Dale

PDM, you mentioned places you'll be running games in the near future. Do you have a tour list or something online where I can at least come by and shake your hand and say thanks for all of this?

MrGunn

Thanks for the supportive feedback Jay. I am eagerly awaiting updates for EZD6. I do have a Discord account and I tried it but I don't much care for Internet Relay Chat.

MrGunn

Totally agree Jay, EZD6 is the shiznit. Also agree Scotty is a mensch.

MrGunn

Yes, I agree, for us fan boys to move up to stalker level, we need to know where you are going to be.

Graham Kane

Call me crazy, but I think I know the reason WOTC are prepared to roll back on ideas like the changes to crits. I believe WOTC don't want people to hack and houserule the game too much. The newer generation of D&D players seem much more prepared to take the rules as "gospel" and they are the players that WOTC are targeting with ONED&D as they will eat up any new rulebooks that are released.

samurguybri

I’m not concerned about rules as much as I am the status of the OGL. This could effect what kind of cool, creative products people come out with. There was definitely a delay when 5E was released as to Hasbro putting out the new OGL. Will they do it this time? Will they want to close the garden so much that they will remove the OGL? I don’t have the ins or insights to answer this, but I wonder

William Smith

I definitely am in the "the best D&D is the one you make" camp. I also am trying to figure out a way to just go with wounds as a death-track. I have some ideas, like the way 2d20 Conan has Vigor (these recover fast and encompass much of what D&D HP are about, luck, stamina, skills, etc.) and Wounds (these take some time to recover and are very serious) which if I remember right, was how WotC Star Wars RPG was. Like we have talked about before, Armor Class seems to be so simple, but I have not given up on armor as damage reduction. Finally, I love that you are continuing the porch lectures past the summer. I know I have said it before, but I felt it important to say it again.

Daniel Defazio

It's definitely important to say again because I want to make content people like. Armor absorption is fine. I think More Borg does it really well.

Daniel Defazio

Thanks. I appreciate your kind words. Scotty's writing is FANTASTIC. The line "Do I Have 10,000 Hit Points? No." Brilliant.

Andrew

Enjoy. Anyone who writes fantasy or runs fantasy games should have this on their shelf along side Howard and Fritz Leiber---there's not one wasted word. Enjoy the ride.

Adam Preset

I like the Lazy DM stuff also. The secrets and clues bit is wise.

Eduardo Portas

I was an AD&D 2E DM for 7 years and mages were really scarce amongst my players. Having 4HP and 1 spell at first, only to die at the hand of the first kobold they faced... Yeah, it was not a popular class.

Eduardo Portas

I may be wrong, but I believe removing the OGL will simply fragment their audience, as many veteran players consume 3rd party material, which can be awesome.

Joel A.

Will be streaming this while on way to work tomorrow. EDITED: Very enjoyable. Thank you. And hope your daughter's visit went well.

Skyhammer

"What are the things that slow down a game?" An excellent question. I've been focusing on this aspect for a while now, doing everything I can to make scenes run faster and thereby improve the pacing. One thing I've learned is that Conjurations, NPCs, and spells are just not your friends during combat. These are the worse in regards to time crunch during my game, especially if run tier 4 like I do. I constantly fall for the biggest blunder, checking a rule, a feat, a class ability or a spell description during a scene. Good lecture professor.

Nate Ng

Hi, Professor ! You were right - that’s pretty much what I said. Maybe not an all out flame war but , with Twitter and YouTube and the internet in general being the way it is , I can see how people are getting snarky about (merely proposed) changes to 5E. Which could lead to a divide between 5E RAWers and this upcoming OneD&D generation. But I’m in your camp - the best edition is the one you create with your table. Runehammer has really exemplified this by showing how his table is creating their own version of AD&D as they are playing the new Dirty Jobs Crew campaign. Just like how , i imagine , you created Deathbringer as you and your players were at your table

Broton

Thanks PDM, enjoyed the video, as always lots to think about. And I did like the squirrel just before the 4:30 mark :)
