Hello PDM, and Adhesive Tom, I hope you both are having a nice day, PDM keep up the great work! - What are some of your own personal shortcomings in regards to being a better DM and player? And how do you plan to better yourself for the next session? - Do you ever plan on remaking some of your older advice videos? - What is your favorite starting settlement from tabletop games? Examples include: Saltmarsh, Orlane, Hommlet, Kendall Keep from B2, and Restenford from L1 Bone Hill, etc.

MrGunn

Hey PDM, looking forward to hanging out with you and Tom. Tom and I can mock your hippy hair ;P :D jk. So now for questions 3: 1. Have you experimented with Citadel Contrast Paints, Army Painter Speed Paints, or Vallejo Xpress paints, what has your experience been like? 2. I found the FLEX Dice video a bit opaque, are you expressing a desire streamline game play in order to concentrate more on narrative and a sense of immersion, to wit; what triggered you to do this video? 3. Please describe your thoughts on the various approaches to armour class in variants of DnD, standard rising armor class, THACO, armour damage reduction, etc

Brad and Aidan

Hello. Ive been running a DND group for 3 teenage boys for a couple years. I played 30 years ago. None of them played before. Recently, they said they'd like to rotate DM duties. One of the three might be up for it. But one very enthusiastic boy is not. He barely understands the rules, owns no books, and shows no planning skills. Should I just let failure unfold? Or try to coax him into waiting a bit longer before trying? What would you do?

Chuck Thorin

Hope you're feeling better PDM. What's your definition of an Indie RPG/Publisher? Where's the line between Indie and "mainstream" publisher? Personally, I wouldn't consider Paizo, Darrington Press, Kobold Press, Chaosium, or Modiphius indie publishers. They aren't WOTC but I wouldn't consider them Indie either.

PDM love the content and thanks for your time blood sweat and tears,

Frank Martinez

question: what is best way to care out a boss battle with large creatures with limited space with miniatures and a chase ensues? Characters I think would lose against a Dragon or a Giant ?

Frank Martinez

Adhesive Tom question: is a paint sprayer a must have when painting miniature

Brent Norton

What are some hidden hurdles that people don’t think about when they are writing their first published adventure?

Masterhit

I'll piggy-back on this and ask that you include a comment about playtesting.

Masterhit

What would be your top tips for starting a youtube/video channel with emphasis on tools/gear/software you found to be the best return on your investment, or that really eased your workflow? Not specifically looking for details/brands/etc. but a couple of things you initially didn't think were important that turned out to be great, or that you wished you'd jumped on earlier. (Maybe a boring question since this is probably answered all over youtube... feel free to ignore me lol)

My 12 year old wants to publish a game he has written. Can you give him some basic pointers for publishing a small pdf with core rules and an adventure?

Jay

PDM, if you don’t want to use strikes for damage in Deathbringer would you consider eliminating the damage roll and base damage solely on the hit roll and type of damage. For example, if you need a 12 to hit and roll a 19 you could do above average damage without a separate damage roll. Otherwise, it doesn’t really matter if you got well above the 12 to hit and worse if you roll low on your damage roll. This could be easily implemented based on damage type with possible modifiers for strength, dexterity, and magic. Dungeon Coach is doing something similar. 12 minute video. Link below. Dungeon Coach - NEW D20 Damage System for Faster Combat | DC20 RPG - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjqVpGfSuRc

MrGunn

Coach talks too fast. O_o :) I cannot groc what he is saying. I watched some more Coach vids, not my cup of tea.

Hi PDM and Adhesive Tom, 1) Love to hear both your thoughts on Slapchop in general. Particularly how does it compare in speed and overall quality to your earlier technique of basecoat and Quickshade. 2) When you are finally ready to publish Deathbringer would you consider following Shadowdark and Knave 2 by making a Kickstarter campaign.

Jay

I try to listen to as many points of view as possible even from the channels I don't always agree with. Sometimes they have good ideas or ideas you can expand on. You know, the broken clock theory "Even a broken clock is correct twice a day". However, in this case, I like the channel and think he narrows mechanics for to-hit and damage down to a single roll and that's worth looking into even if it means some rework or homebrew. Scotty did that with EZD6 but I'm not suggesting that those who like D20 games abandon them yet look into some of the best practices from other games to improve their own games. A single roll for hit and damage without a chart or ton of math is a very innovative if not streamlined idea in my humble opinion. Still, if not your cup of tea, I get it. Just go with what works for you and your group right. Hope things are going well and take care.

Hi PDM and Tom Tom, I enjoyed watching your characters: The womanising Bastard Duvel, the gritty British musician in Werewolf, and the smooth upper class 1940s spy in Spy Hard. They were fun and felt completely authentic. Amazing considering they are improvised. How do you do it?

Hey PDM, this may actually be a legal/copyright question, but what is your disposition regarding modification and reproduction of the Deathbringer property? Specifically, what is appropriate use of the character sheets and tables? Example: I did some photoshopping to create a 4-character, Zero-level Deathbringer character sheet for funnels, and my students -- which definitely uses some of Hank's Deathbringer artwork, too. This was for the games I run with middle schoolers. I told some folks about the sheets, and they were clamoring for me to share them/post on social media. I balked at that, especially the latter request. How do you recommend I respond? Would sharing such a thing be okay with you if the person was a Patreon subscriber or if they purchased Deathbringer for Drive-Thru RPG? Or is sharing such creations generally frowned upon regardless. Thanks!

Daniel Defazio

Make your own sheets--especially for kids. Just hide the Deathbringer background tables. I don't want you explaining "courtesan" to a 6th grader.

MrGunn

@Jay Thanks for taking the time to respond, I agree the approach is interesting, and I am all for streamlining play. Lately though, l feel the debate is dragging us dangerously close to taking all of tactical nuance and flavor out of the game. To me, part of the flavor are the highs and lows of rolling dice. Additionally, mechanically, weapon choice matters. Implementing some of the solutions described would mean weapon type no longer really matters, why choose a spear, long sword, or dagger over any other weapon if there is no mechanical difference and all weapon damage outcomes are the same? Average damage for monsters and PCs is fine, so long as there is still some value in doing so without impacting tactical choices and game flavor. There are several methods to speeding up play; rolling to hit and damage dice simultaneously springs to mind first. Another approach, is if the PCs roll the precise number to hit, they do minimum damage, exceed it by one or more the PC does average damage, exceed the to hit by five and do maximum damage, exceed by 10, do double average damage or maximum which ever is highest, crits do double max damage or triple max damage if they exceed the to hit roll by five. PDMs proposal of using FUDGE Dice with minus as minimum damage, blank average damage, plus max damage, is fine, note crits should always do two or three times max damage. Alternatively, dropping HP and going with a Strikes approach might look like, smaller weapons like, daggers and clubs do a half strike: standard weapons like, broad swords, maces, arrows, short swords do one strike; larger weapons, like bastard swords wielded two handed, two handed swords, windlass crossbows do 1.5 strikes etc. Frankly, the more I think about it, the more I think original DnD designers got it right and hit the sweet spot; roll to hit then roll damage, simple. The system leaves room for mechanical options and flavor, while maintaining game balance. Sure you can tinker with things a bit like, hit points for monsters and PCs, damage bonuses for exceeding a certain to hit threshold etc, critical, wounds for exceeding current HP in a single round. However, at the end of the day the current system works pretty darn well, and there really isn't much need to change it.

MrGunn

PS As to listening to multiple points of view, I completely agree, but if the old guy cannot understand the fast talking whippersnapper did the young man say anything at all? ;) :D

MrGunn

@Will Morgan Lov John Lovitz, aww I hate when that happens!

Jay

I understand your perspective and if it works for you go with it. I'm of the mind that this is the subject of game design and the fewer steps and less math make it flow smoother. It seems PDM is more interested in seeing where the players take the narrative with a rules light approach. As someone with significant real life combat experience I could easily go down the rabbit hole of tactics and weaponry. However, I'm not trying to do traffic accident reconstruction here. I'm suggesting an idea for the Deathbringer game where players might get through a one-shot in a single evening. It really comes down to the type of game people want to play. In this case, I can see that PDM is more interested in how the story develops and doesn't want to get bogged down in nuance, math, and overly complex rules. So I suggested this idea solely for HIS game. No one else need change anything about the way they play. If he was doing a tactical skirmish type of game I would have mad very different suggestions. Regardless, I wasn't looking for a broad discussion. Just a perspective from PDM if my suggestion works for him. I play a variety of games and this one seems to be going the way of game mechanics taking a back seat yet not without just the right amount of crunch. I see that in Critical Role, Cogent Roleplay, EZD6 and many other games that stream for online audiences try to avoid long pauses that would bore the players and those watching by looking up rules or doing math. Regardless, your not wrong for having a different opinion. It all comes down to what you want to do with your group at your table. With all that said I bid you a good day and a pleasant tomorrow.

Jay

FYI, The original TSR Moldvay Cook Dungeons and Dragons had all weapon damage a 1D6. Variable Weapon damage was an optional rule. I still love me some BX rules.

MrGunn

@Jay Always appreciate our discourse. I would only distinguish between how PDM plays his own specific games and the advice he dispenses as general consumption. Apologies if I got a little carried away and may have usurped the purpose of this forum.

Jay

It's all good. Just exhausted on this end and not much time for back and forth anymore. You always make good points and usually have some insight others might miss. Anyway, hope things are going well. Gotta go for now.
