I own it and I've browsed it but never played it.

Jonathan

Interesting system. It’s the closest the U.S. is likely to get to Japan’s Sword World. Thankfully, it left out the more graphic elements of the anime’s and light novel’s opening story.

Questions: correct me if I'm wrong, to attack, you add your Ability Score Bonus and your Level to the 2d6. Yes? Then--how is damage calculated?

James C

I also have it but it’s very text heavy and haven’t thoroughly read it.

Jonathan

I can see the confusion. The damage calculations on pp. 193+194 have you referring to a few different elements including the weapon’s power, class level, and the effectiveness rating of the initial hit. I may need to chew on this.

Jonathan

If I’m reading this right (and given the translation, I might not be), it appears to be calculated from: the weapon power (expressed as a number of d6s appropriate to the weapon) + the class level of the attacker + a number of additional d6s derived from the total score of the hit check made to see if the attacker was successful. That last part is really finicky since it can be adjusted by additional bonuses and penalties. Potentially, you’re going to roll a whole bucket of d6s at higher levels as your average hit effectiveness improves.

I own it, but I have not "studied" it yet, only glanced it. It seems fun, but also a bit crunchy, definitely not a 2d6 vs TN light rules RPG.

Jonathan

And to clarify, it isn’t strictly number of d6s equal to the total hit check score but rather a number of them derived from a rating on a table. I could see this being tricky to juggle at first.

Yes, I own the book, had a mock combat with a member of the group to check out mechanics, that's as far as I've gotten - the group are keen to try it out though so we'll get it done in the next 8 weeks or so.

Lee Caddick

Oh and yes I've read the book like a true nerd

Jay

It's one I'm interested in but yet do not have. So I watched this review of the game a while ago if your interested? Goblin Slayer RPG: Now in English! ( SNE 2019+ / YenPress, 2022-present ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i-WpLftrFY

Jay

That game mechanic sounds very similar like Advanced Fighting Fantasy.

Each weapon has a base damage (power: 1d6+2, for example), add the level of the class using the weapon, and bonus damage from the hit effectiveness table on pg. 194 (hit effectiveness is the same as the hit check/attack roll). If you got a crit with the hit check you also add 5 on top of all this. That's for weapons - unfortunately I haven't playtested spells yet XD

Lee Caddick

I'm checking my punctuation much more often because you're a teacher. I hope you're happy.

I have read the book, but play and far prefer Sword World 2.5, the system that Goblin Slayer is based on. The biggest issue to my mind, with GS is the death spiral built in.
