D&D Sold!

Is pandaily credible? Seems to be a rehash of what Roll for Combat said in a video 2 weeks ago.

Jonny Himes

I just saw this on Stephen Glicker. Are you sure it's Ten Cent as the potential buyer and not 50 cent?

Chad Wilkerson

Pretty sure Swen’s surname is pronounced “VEEN-kuh.” Wild news. You didn’t really touch on it in the video, but how might Tencent being a Chinese-based conglomerate impact any of this? I’m clueless on the nuances of international, multi-national IP capital investment shenanigans.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. PDM! Hope your cake is a critical success!

Beardy B.

I wonder if and how this will affect licensing. Nothing like a whole new company to make things unpredictable. Meet the new boss, Same as the old boss.

Jeff Jones

I'm not too crazy about China controlling D&D.

Elvis Ramone

I have no love of Hasbro, but I have a bad feeling about this. Be careful what you ask for, you just may get it.

David Ford

Happy Birthday, Mrs PDM! May all your birthday cakes be chocolate.

SJBehindtheScreen

all, this is SO rich...what better way to celebrate the 50th birthday of the worlds most popular RPG than to sell it to a software giant in China?

Craig Sutherland

I am very familiar with Tencent. They would make Hasbro look like angels by comparison. If true, this will be a major blow to the hobby. With that said, I don’t at all believe this is actually what is happening. I suspect there are some lost in translation details and nuance here, and I think it may be more around exclusivity around video game licensing. At least that is the way I read it. I think this is just a trendy topic right now part of the D&D/WotC resentment train that has been ongoing since the OGL debacle. Roll for Combat often produces doom and gloom for D&D videos, and I get it, the YouTube algorithm rewards negative stuff like that due to the clicks that it produces. I’d be more careful about buying into this whole hog reflexively. (For clarity, I do enjoy Stephen Glicker’s content, just not the stuff that comes off as more of a vendetta against D&D)

Kevin Ray

Very interesting, but since I'm more of a small publisher/homebrew guy, it's not really going to impact me.

Kyle (saint)

Tencent would be a terrible owner of the D&D IP.

Spencer Wright

What an awful idea. D&D as an arm of Chi-Com signals intelligence. Gary is rolling in his grave.

Graymaulken

Happy Birthday to the missus! Hopefully she will not sick Deathbringer on you for uploading on her birthday…

Masterhit

Don't besmirch Micronauts!!!! Loved those in 1979 lol

MrGunn

@Bagel-Man. As we round the final turn, we have Bagel-Man in the Everything car with a commanding lead🏎️🤣

MrGunn

Professor interesting times indeed, who knew the CCP would be selling us the TTRPG with which they will hang us. Since, I don’t give a 💩 about WizBros or D&D anymore, I don’t think this will materially matter to me personally in the near term. If Hasbro sells the entire IP, lock, stock, and barrel, the ripple effect on the industry will be very interesting indeed, especially with existing licensees. Sadly, Cynthia may need to look for a new job, “There was a girl, she tried to monetize the most well known TTRPG, but the Commies sent her to reeducation camp…”. Also Mr. Cox may be let go soon too, his tenure at the helm has not been profitable. Once again thanks for keeping us informed. Finally, I would like to wish Mrs. Dungeon Master a very Happy Birthday! Be well and all success in whatever it is you do. 🙂

MrGunn

@SJBehindtheScreen Great point, I had not thought of the 50th anniversary of D&D angle. Could this be why WizBros D&D anniversary celebration plans are so lackluster?

Gregory Helding

Full denial by Hasbro released this morning.

Jay

Update on this story – Friday – 01 FEB 2024 - YouTube – Roll for Combat – Is Hasbro Really Trying to Sell D&D? Or Were We Tricked. For reasons such as this, I typically wait before making a judgement on sensational news that has a lot of missing evidence and information. Turns out, according to Baron de Ropp, this might be an AI driven Chinese Psy-Op.

Jay

Bad enough many rely on the CCP for everything from food to pharmaceuticals. Kind of foolish to rely on economic competitors for critical supplies or even giving them an edge to produce the non-critical ones. They are definitely not allies of the west politically either. I really don't think we should be outsourcing to them for anything. Still multinational corporations will do it for cheap slave labor in order to turn a profit and consumers won't care if they can get their meds, books, processed foods, and plastic junk cheap. Yet, I haven't forgotten how the wanted to stop shipping medication to us during the pandemic. Sometimes I feel like there aren't many people paying attention. I'm certain if this persists those people may find this story doesn't have a happy ending.

Bagel-Man

Dang, WotC released a statement and denied it

Craig Sutherland

Yup, it looks like what I thought it was (above).

MrGunn

@Jay Indeed, everyone conveniently forgets China is a vicious and rapacious totalitarian state, who like to test their AI psyops on an unsuspecting public, we truly live in age where truth is lies.
