A few breakdowns from the last month! Skimming through a lot, but definitely let me know if there's anything you'd like me to go over in more detail!

I'm literally hand-painting every river for a rivet bump map right now hahahaha- I spent all afternoon the other day trying to get an auto-generated version, and none of them really made them feel Bumpy.

bittergourd

It's not coming to Blender due to licensing issues. Unless Nvidia changes the licensing terms.

Tim L.

The Spaceship looks awesome, how did you do the rusty edgewear? is it a procedural shader or did you paint them in?

AKP

The sequence you’re putting together here looks awesome Ian! Missed the vids, looking forward to the next.

I believe nvidia is really pushing it but yes, there is a legal issue with the tech being proprietary and being released in a free product. That being said the cat is out of the bag now so it must have everyone talking about it

Cheng LL

hi Ian~ can you talk more about AI?

Chromfell

the monster is so good actually !!!

IanHubert

Ah thanks! In some of the renders, I definitley tried to make sure that the edges of certain panels lined up with the rustier parts of the image texture- But there's procedural stuff too- Some of mine, and some of Noax'- I usually use something like this technique here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ149bMtKRA

It would be really cool to see the workflow you guys use for dealing with difficult tracking shots. Like, are you just brute forcing and manually placing markers or is there some kind of other magic you're doing? :)

Dolph K

Hey Ian, I'd love to hear how you end up solving the rivet issue. I'm having the same problem with a ship design I'm playing around with and can't find a good fix. Wondering if using something like Decal Machine would be a good solution to keep things light and still editable.

Maxime Gerardin

Hey Ian! Thank you for your amazing videos, like always! I'd just be happy to help for a small thing, at 17:20 you're manually moving the bush and do some trial and errors until it matches the real footage bush. I know it doesn't have to match perfectly, but there's actually a fun and easy technique to make it match perfectly! I recorded a short video to explain : https://youtu.be/rQxU-YNCOZ8 Thanks again, have a great one!

Richard Cave

Great work, yes I get the file size and MP4 disconnect as well, I worked on a movie on set, and it was a very expensive movie, big sets, stunts, over four hundred crew, and at the end of the day it ended up on a hard drive to go to the editors. We did all that for that.

Thomas Wiwchar

that daylight shot of inside the ship looks awesome. Id love to see more of a breakdown of how that is going, with the screen (projector?) and lighting and how to make convincing daylight.

Sai Charan K

Could you perhaps make a video where it's just you and Lux sir like filming a shot? Cause I really wanna see how you guys shoot on set with all the props and sets you have in grasp.. Thank you as always!!

It’s not actually impossible. I’ve looked into the Blender and DLSS licenses a bit, and from what I understand, there are no issues implementing DLSS in Blender as long as it’s delivered via an external method: through an add-on, a manual build using the Streamline SDK, or similar options. Blender uses the GPL license, which prohibits mixing GPL code with closed (proprietary) code like DLSS. Any code or file bundled with a GPL program effectively becomes part of that program and requires the source code to be open. (Note regarding existing tech: When using OptiX and CUDA, Blender communicates directly with the NVIDIA driver files). So, here is a DLSS implementation option that wouldn’t conflict with the licenses: Blender includes the code to communicate with DLSS, but simply doesn't include the proprietary NVIDIA files in the installer itself. Alternatively, an add-on could be created based on Streamline (a framework for simplifying DLSS integration). It uses the MIT license. MIT is compatible with GPL, so Blender can include this framework. It ultimately calls the proprietary plugin, essentially creating a clearer boundary between the open and closed code. Something like that.

Ah cool! Johnny's coming back over soon- I'll try to film something! As it is now, it's all about ratios; the projector's actually pretty dim, but the Sony has really good light sensitivity, so we're cranking the ISO up to 12,000, and trying to make all the other lights match the relative brightness of the screen (which means we can actually get something that feels like sunlight even with our puny lights). Aesthetically, I really want to be able to get a touch overexposed/dirty, and feel as if it's pushing against the dynamic range of the final shot- I think seeing lighting the ship set with light bouncing in through the open door could be really fun :D

IanHubert

Ah yeah- while Blender has a pretty darn good tracker, I know Zeke uses Syntheyes, which more robust right out-of-the-box, and has some powerful features like using a 3d scan of the environment to inform/reinforce the track (but also definitely isn't the cheapest) The issue tends to be motion blur- if you whip the camera too fast, all the tracking points get lost, and yeah- while it's not all that hard to align them by hand during those parts (or even just hand animate the camera), it's still been really nice to be able to hand off to someone else :P But yeah most Blender tracker tutorials tend to be under ideal conditions, and assume everything Just Works- it'd be good to have one for the frequent times when it doesn't!

IanHubert

HOHO! That's a VERY good tip! It makes so much sense once you see it! I feel like I'm going to be using that a lot in the near future. Thanks a ton for making the video!!

Raffo VFX

at 19:13 the artist you don't remember is Corza:)

IanHubert

AH! THANK YOU! I literally scrolled through all my bookmarks and stuff for like half an hour! Such a useful tool.

Tardsmat

Great work! I wonder if there's a way to do the atmospheric blue haze algorithmically. It seems like the kinda thing that someone has already figured out how to do exactly.

Iker Nasarre

Hi, Ian! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your unusual (and brilliant) way of understanding visual effects. In your previous video, it was possible to select multiple audio tracks in different languages. Even though I couldn’t hear your lovely real voice, it helped me understand the video much better in my native language. In this new video, that option isn’t available. I’m not sure whether that’s something on your end, but if it wouldn’t mean extra work, it would be great if you could make it available Thanks!!

Miko Dela

hey, but if you render with eevee you can just disable motion blur per object. And it seems this kind of scene would look nearly the same with eevee... at least that's what I do in such cases :)

Wisdom Uchechukwu

Hello guys am new here and am totally lost 😭 like if there are free assets hido I get it and a complete tutorials

IanHubert

There's an asset tag that'll show you all the assets (I need to spend a day and organize some new stuff)- and if you type what you want to know about into the search, there are a lot more "long form" tutorials that've gone up over the years.

IanHubert

OH! I'll have to try that! I know that in cycles, if you turn off a per-object motion blur, it'll still be blurred if the motion blur is from the camera itself (like, whipping past), which is what was happening in this case.

Simon H.

Hey, I've been watching for a while and just wanted to say your loose style and you showing your process really helped me to get unstuck. I always felt like I have to know the "correct" way for everything and have to learn the most optimal way in anything. You just going for it, showing that you iterate and don't magically have the final result first try is really, really inspiring to me

yassine baka

hello ian is tehre any video of teh modeling car or motorcycle i kidna lookign foir it and didnt find it

✶ Vann Vixious ~

Love the use of the controller for controlling the vehicle - so fun and super great way to direct it in a way you want. Very inspiring stuff as always 😱

Noneya D Biznazz

I hope you saw what the Corridor Crew did with keying greenscreen footage

IanHubert

Ah yeah! I want to experiment with it soon!

Ian Letarte

I don't know how down Zeek would be, but if he did a tutorial explaining his gnarly tracking methods that would be really cool!
