One of those videos where I don't figure out what we're doing till the end- but I'm happy with the final shot! Though I'm sure I'll still mess with it a bit... Mostly I'm excited to see what else we can do with the BlenderGIS real-world landscape plugin (I think we could do some stuff with the buildings to auto-generate cities in a fun way??) Also hot damn compression wasn't kind to this one (though I tried to fix it a bit)BlenderGIS (the plug-in) https://github.com/domlysz/blendergis OpenTopography (you may have to register (free!) for an API) opentopography.orgAnother link to the embedded video, in case it's weird:Modeling the Light Fields

If anyone else is having trouble with YouTube blocking the embedded video and asking you to sign in on mobile, turning off WiFi and using cellular data just to get the video playing so I could hop over to the YouTube app worked for me! (But it might be nice if the direct YouTube links were at the end of the patreon post to not have to deal with the embedding acting weird)

IanHubert

Oh! I wasn't aware of that issue! That's annoying, yeah I can put the links at the end, no problem.

David Peate

Loved the OG grain on that - was actually thinking how nice it looked!

Struggling to follow the gradient plane to control lights segment, but that's probably on me!

this was so fun! It's always a treat to watch you create stuff. Can't wait for the other five tutorials you're editing simultaneously :D

Tardsmat

Kinda unexpected that the camera doesn't record the focal length in the metadata for video since my Sony camera definitely does it for photos. But it makes sense since in a video it could change all the time.

Nathel Sunrider

The idea and the final shots are gorgeous ! What a treat ! I can't wait for the next one !

IanHubert

Oh that's my bad! I've done it so many times in the past that I kind of glossed over it this time. It's also tricky cause the whole point is in general, I can't really see what the gradient is doing directly, just which lights are illuminated- But it's basically using a gradient like this, using the object texture coordinates to "parent" the gradient to the empty. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dvRmgNAjpggrHT5gCL8raR-p4CeEN2fw/view?usp=sharing Then animating the empty to have the repeating gradient move across the scene.

IanHubert

It can in certain instances! And I could definitely be wrong about that. But with a variable zoom, it would need to be saving the focal length on every frame, in case you adjusted it mid shot, and I don't recall ever seeing anything that worked like that.

Thomas Sturm

Great use of BlenderGIS - I need to look into that! And somewhere in this video you mentioned four other tutorials that you are working on, so, uhm... please!?! :)

Ikrima

Out of context question but when iam installing uv squares addon it's not showing in the panel even though it's enable in the preferences

Hey Ian! Was wondering if you had any thoughts on trying to do mocap with cheaper alternatives such as Mocopi or Slimevr trackers for simple animations? I was also wondering if you knew whether some of the more budget/ consumer drones were any good for getting photoscan data of cliffs etc, thought you might have some thoughts on this since you have been using professional hardware for some years now and have seen the space evolve with newer tech. Thanks in advance, no worries if you dont have any thoughts on this

‘This was not necessary and I am wrong for doing it’ absolutely sent me.

Ian! Since blender released this new online repository/ asset library feature, would you ever consider hosting the assets and plugins you drop on patreon on an online asset library? I’m honestly not sure what that would involve from the host’s end but honestly patreon is terrible for trying to go back and find the amazing assets you’ve shared. From the user’s perspective they just add a link to their asset library list and it auto-populates with whatever you add. Maybe something to look at in the future?

Hello Ian, do you use mist passes in fusion? How do you use it?

PixelDev

i have the same problem when I use a VPN

Gage mentioned!! 🎉 Wasn't sure yet if this was the same character, but I'm happy it is. For the 60 degreen FOV in Google Earth thing - for some insane reason, OpenGL often thinks of FOV as the *vertical* amount. So if you do `(viewport width / viewport height) * 60` it might be closer.

IanHubert

AH! You know what- that sounds about right!! Thanks for that

I just want the camera to zoom out and its a gigantic jumbotron display showing movies to people living on space stations. You just need the lights to be R G and B. He's having a sandwich while a sandwich ad is playing on the side of the planet

ScifiFilmmaker

Have you gotten any proposed deals to get a TV show or movie made?

Maxime Gerardin

oh no, I didn't get my monthly dose of Ian, October will be tough. Jokes aside, just wanted to leave a quick note; times are tough, and your posts sincerely help a lot! It's not just random videos about blender or filmmaking, even tho IT IS, you're always so passionnate about the stuff you talk about, the way you talk and demonstrate is full of energy and kindness. You explain your thought process nicely, show us some fun tips and tricks, and it's just always a nice time watching your content. Thanks for this Patreon, it's truly the best one out there, at least for me. I'd sure love if you kept going, keep up the good work Ian

Niels Riisgaard

Yes! Videos are so appreciated! They don't have to be ground breaking every timenand it's always so nice to get any kind of insight to your creative process or projects going on. All the best, from Denmark:-))

Ian you can export frames easily in exr in the fusion page, just right click on the footage and "save image"
