Not the most focused video in the world, maybe, but I tried to talk about some parts of the process that I usually skirt around! If you DID want a more technically oriented step-by-step video, I recommend the "Making a shot" 3 part series from a while ago! Goes through the entire process. Also- didn't properly credit Greg in the video! I've had this folder sitting on my computer for a while and somehow figured it was from the wikimedia commonsGreg GirardLise SarfatiElena ChernyshovaNeon sign designed by CavanMurals designed by Suzi

Ya...... Ian Time 👍🏾🤩🙏🏾

vis_ref

Thank you so much Ian!! I was waiting for this kind of topic 🤩. I hope you've seen my message where I shared with you something :)

IanHubert

Oh I dont' think I have yet, but I'm pushing hard to get caught up with messages in the next few days here! I'll keep an eye out!

Antoine Dej

Thanks a lot 🙏 Super cool to see your process and really usefull tips ! 🙌

Doug Brown

Man I needed this the day before I go back to my unrelated work.... Thanks :) Hey Ian, have you ever done a live QA? Like a youtube Patron only thing perhaps? Have you ever "wanted" to do one? :) Might be an idea for the future...

IanHubert

Hey yeah! I was thinking about doing one to talk about gig work?? I've had a few folks ask about the "job" side of things (music videos and all that), so I figured that might be interesting if folks had specific questions? Just gotta figure out how to set up a livestream on YouTube (and the best time to do it, internationally :P)

IanHubert

Ah that's good to hear!! I get nervous posting stuff that isn't, like, blender tutorials :P

Doug Brown

Yeah I watch one ever Friday from an artist called Aaron Blaise... he's in Florida... he's a creature artist (who used to work for Disney) - and when it goes live it's around 6pm here (I'm in Scotland).. which I think would be 1pm Florida time... **shrugs shoulders

2026-09-20 10:00 can you make a small video about modeling changes Japanese roof like you did in hear please
2021-02-07 11:37

Doug Brown

He does like "a thing" and while he's doing said "thing" he's answering questions as he goes... really works well... but he has an assistant to keep an eye on the chat... maybe you could get the missus involved :)

Indrek Saarmets

That’s cool. You might be overthinking about loosing attention after camera comes out from the corner of the building. I am pretty sure the birds catch the eye. And if you don’t like the birds anymore, then maybe there are too many of them? The idea of connecting front and back buildings with something is good. I saw suspension bridge hanging there in my mind. Anyway, unbelievably detailed work and I really love it. Thanks for sharing!

William Landgren

Looking great as always dude! You always seem to be pushing the envelope of what can be done in blender, crazy

Torsten Lang

hey, I couldnt really understand the name of that russian photographer you mentioned. How is it written?

IanHubert

I linked it in the description! :D

Strobez

Oh man, this is great stuff!! Thanks a bunch!! Any chance you could do a tutorial on how you made those tile roofs?

HerbHerbHerbert

Crazy seeing one dude making stuff that looks like it's out of a movie. Can't wait to see the first episode! :D

Chaoui Karim

Hi Ian ! First time I use this patreon thing ... I discovered it cause of you, and I still don't know how to jump to another line. Well ... I love your philosophy of doing things, I come from more than 20 years of 3D world, and never felt this exciting sensation of seen someone working on his projects till I've seen you do ... I don't know how I could mix your ideas with my job as architect designer (nothing to do with vfx or making films) but... I'm sure that I'll figure out what kind of things I can add to my presentations... You are very inspiring... Good job.. and thanks for this new breath in the 3D world !.. well I'm frenchie, if you don't understand something, it's cool ... do like if you have understood everything 😅

Rob Welsh

Inspirational and motivational, as always dude 👌🏻

Housesketcher

Great discourse Ian! I'm halfway now. I have a whole photobook on Kowloon. Absolutely amazing stuff! Love the photographers you're showing!

Torsten Lang

ah thank you! Those photographs are amazing!

Andrew McSweeney

This was really helpful! I love videos like this

坤勇 陈

真的太厉害了，从人物扫描，到骨骼绑定，再到资产，环境的建设，整个过程真的给了我耳目一新的感觉，你让我真的爱上了这款软件，Thank you Ian :)

Evan Barron

The Infinite Ice Cream analogy was TOO wise for my brain to handle. Nice work, Ian

Nicholas Truske

you always do so much to open me up ! I have always loved the kind of stuff you love too - but I am so uptight & slow & to see you doing it is always so awesome - I drool with ice cream eyes devouring every precious moment of these intensely rich moments & your inner workings of your complex mind. So loving the scenes - you do architecture soooo good - omg !!!! . . . I love to eat it up !!!!

James Hughes

This is definitely refreshing video with great insight. The birds remind me of the shot from Lord of the Rings, maybe if you made the birds weave more it would help sell the depth of the city. I watch flocks of birds from my window evade falcons and it is amazing seeing them duck and dodge through the apartment buildings.

Diego Fraga

Hey Ian! Great video! How did you made that Chinese roof? Was it just an image texture that you bent it and did some polish? Cheers

Blake Rizzo

I absolutely love all of this. Also “Bellevue is just a bunch of clean rectangles they built because Seattle was full” is now what I’m going to cite when talking about it. That’s so spot on hahahahahaha.

Chris Voss

I am primarily a street photographer and have been a fan of Greg for a long time. I started blender in quarantine and am pretty stoked to see the two worlds merge

Joel Godin

You're going to love 2.92's coming feature (already in build bot) where you can create objects without going into edit and extruding. It's like boxcutter in a way. Then with bool tool, you just select the cutter then the object and boom! cut into the face. And it comes with a grid free of charge!

Maxime Gerardin

Oh no Ian ! You forgot to fill the empty space bellow the buildings in the background :o

PauloDand

Love the way the video goes through your different states of perception of the scene as you work on it. It makes it so more interesting than just showing all the steps you took after you already did it. You mention you're worried that the viewer don't really have a point to follow in the mid-end part of the video. I wonder if you use the steam elements you made to add some "exhaustion bursts" to pipes in the roofs, the movement would bring focus to it and maybe help direct the viewer through the scene. Perhaps if the steam is behind the birds would not only bring focus to it, it would also separate the birds from the background, making easier for the viewer to follow the birds for the next few seconds as the steam dissipates before the camera focus on Kaitlin. One last thing: don't forget the green EXIT on the roof in the end xD

Blake Rizzo

Oh my gosh a video on gigging/music video experience/pricing in general would be absolutely fantastic.

Greg Beaudry

Hey Ian, don't know if you'll see this, but maybe you should consider have more brightness contrast around your gf for the final frames? I think that her outfit is very dark and the wall behind her is also dark so your eye has a hard time landing on her. If you make the wall much lighter, it'll be a lot easier that modeling something totally different while still achieving a grounding point for the shot haha just an idea:)

IanHubert

I JUST SAW THAT! Arrrrrgh hahaha- it's okay, I wanted to fix up that whole area a bit anyways.

Nathan K

In case anyone doesn't already know: if you're interested in Kowloon (or just like the pictures) and can get your hands on a copy of Greg's book "City of Darkness", it is absolutely worth it.

IanHubert

Ah thanks for that, Nathan!! I feel bad not crediting him better in the vid! Gotta get that book.

Robert Singler Jr

I thought the Japanese Roof was photogrammetry from Sketchfab; maybe from Miguel Bandera's work? In any event, he talked about the specular map on there, indicating that it didn't have enough contrast in it. There are few youtube tutorials on the specular map that are very brief like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5I0k3xifdg. I find myself editing the height map so that it is much darker and being more specific about the specular maps and what I would like by tweaking them a lot in Affinity (like photoshop for people who don't want to be ripped off).

Robert Singler Jr

If it wasn't a photoscan, than I don't know how he modeled it. He talks about extruding certain bricks, but I don't know what that would mean for that tiled rooftop.

Daan de Bruijn

Maybe 'Don't feed the birds' on the sign will tie a bit better into a moss and poop covered bell tower.

My viewport gets bogged down from the default cube, how the heck....

Erich Stenzel

Excellent video Ian! Thank you for sharing your thought process! Just as inspirational it is to see someone else's work, there is something to learn and be inspired from seeing how other people think too!

judelightning

wait one of the signs say phils reality is that a refrence to philip the mod

DankVote

I know this is really picky, and Ian I love everything I have seen here, but at the start, 00:56, please consider changing the text in the sticker [yellow text], although it may be funny, it reads as a placeholder, unless it is, and takes away from the worldbuilding. Top-notch work.

Chaoui Karim

One Question IAN plz .. For your skies, do you use environment HDRI's ? or do you composite them elsewhere ? do you have a specific workflow or or it depends on situation ? ... Cause ii cant find a good way to animate a sky a give it a natural/real look ... thx

Diego Nossa

This is a great idea! And is very valuable to get input on other things besides the technical side, that's why this video more in depth into your process and workflow is golden. If you decide to go with the streaming I recommend OBS, feel free to reach out if you need any assistance Ian!

John Austin

Ian You keep talking about crowds being hard are you aware of https://www.crowdsim3d.com/ its dedicated crowdsym for blender human and traffic specific I have this but haven't had much time to play with it yet

David Lanham

Probably a bit much but it’d also be kind of amazing to see the bell tower message sign with all but the last few letters (which probably fits a less-tread area) and then a hint of some dangling sign hanger pole/gear/rope, or cardboard box of plastic letters from “signs from god, inc.” left out on the rafters, etc :P

Leben in 360

This looks pretty interesting. Looking into it, Thank you, John!

James Combridge

smoke or a light behind the main character at the end could work well to help her pop a bit more. Higher contrast areas are a great way to pull focus. Love the breakdown and thought process, especially regarding generating new ideas by mashing multiple influences together

Oliver Lewis

I jumped to the end of the video and then nearly jumped out of my skin

John Austin

you are welcome. though my motives are a bit selfish I'm desperately hoping someone will figure it out and make some video tutorials on how to use it. i don't learn well from technical pdf's

naweed qureshi

reminds me of Treasure town from Tekkonkinkreet. 😍

Great video as always! As someone living in the eastern bloc, it's funny hearing you talk about the photos from here :D

Travis Park

:O He changed Phil's Realty to Phil's Pre-Do!

seamus vaughan

I really like the hand modeled tiles when you say "actual bricks versus an image texture" are the bricks an array? I'm not sure I understand how you did it but Id like to

Jared Soto

I'm a little late but this was such a treat. These are so insanely valuable, it would be cool to see more breakdowns like this!

Burky Music

At the end maybe add a drone flying by, as it passes you could reveal the sign since there’s nothing to attract your eye on the right side, really cool scene all around

Lukas Sprehn

Maybe the birds would work better if the they would be flying upwards at the end and not add to the "detail salad" as you call it. Or you can get much closer to Kaitlin's character much faster and have the birds just fly by the lens, super close on, like a dark blur. Sort of like what they often do with the bats in Batman Begins? Also, I totally get what you're going for, Ian. The wish to create locations that look appealing in that "You can explore this. I want to explore this" kind of way. It's like a weird sense of wanderlust. Of appeal. The feeling you get when you see light reflected in water just right... when you see the glow of a campfire. Close by or in the distance. Let's explore that fire!
